Popular Pub Supports Canal Campaign

A

POPULAR Wiltshire pub has adopted its first charity since being taken over by new management. The Bell Inn at Bowden Hill, Lacock, has chosen to support the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust which is restoring the former waterway through the local countryside. Paul and Georgia Maloney decided to fundraise for the charity after learning more about its history through Paul’s father Dave, who is chairman of the Trust’s Melksham, Chippenham & Calne branch. However, it also links in with the history of their pub as its address is ‘The Wharf’ - a reference to how the former row of cottages was once located near the canal before it fell into disrepair and was filled in. Paul and Georgia hope the restoration of the waterway would provide a big boost to the local economy and are already looking forward to raising a significant amount of money to aid the campaign. Paul, who has been manager of The Bell for more than ten years, said:

6

“This is our first year as leaseholders of the pub and we wanted to support a charity with a local connection. “It would be superb if we could see the Wilts & Berks brought back to life. Everyone likes to sit in a beer garden next to a canal, watching the boats slowly passing by. It would also make Lacock even more popular with tourists, boosting the local economy.” The Bell has previously supported several good causes, including the RUH Forever Friends Appeal and Barnardo’s. Paul and Georgia hope to tap into that goodwill and are already considering several fundraising events including a beer festival, classic car show and regular quiz nights. Dave has been chairman of the local branch of the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust since last year. He said: “We’re delighted that The Bell has

Paul and Georgia Maloney of The Bell Inn raise a glass to Dave Maloney of the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust. chosen us as its ‘charity of the year’ and we hope the partnership will be a huge success. Our volunteers have already restored a significant stretch of the waterway between Lacock and Pewsham in the north, and we’re currently seeking planning permission for the ‘Melksham Link’ from the Kennet & Avon Canal to the River Avon in the south. We hope it will then simply be a matter of time before these two pieces of the jigsaw are joined together at Lacock, providing a wonderful new link between Melksham and Chippenham.” For further information on supporting the local branch of the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust, email dave.maloney@wbct.org.uk or visit www.wbct.org.uk For further information on The Bell Inn, visit www.thebellatlacock.co.uk

Wessex Auction Rooms

ESSEX Auction Rooms had one of their busiest Antiques, Furniture & Collectables auctions on Saturday 16 July, with a record number of online bidders.

The auction included a number of Chinese bronzes and porcelain collectables, with telephone bidding interest from China, along with room bidders. The star of the sale was a Chinese porcelain polychrome enamelled 'dragon' bottle vase, selling for £520 (right).

The market for 20th century design is still proving strong, with the sale including several items of interest. Unaware that a Rene Lalique coquilles dish was amongst a box of mixed collectables, the seller was delighted to see the dish sell for £340. Modern design also featured, with a Moorcroft Pottery 'Trout' pattern twin handled baluster vase, designed by Phillip Gibson, which sold for £340 (above).

Wessex Auction Rooms are accepting items for the next Antiques, Furniture & Collectables auction, which takes place on 1st October 2016. Reduce stress and impact the lives of others

ID you know, insomnia, affects one in three people in the UK and can be a sign of low level mental health issues such as depression and anxiety? Local charity, The Learning Curve is taking part in a national research project to help identify ways to enable people overcome these issues and are currently looking for more participants. The community learning project is offered as an alternative to therapeutic treatments and explores the effect on participant’s confidence and motivation as a direct result of taking part in activities such as yoga and cooking. The Learning Curve has seen clear results from over 100 participants with scores of anxiety and depression improving significantly at the end of each course. Many participants have gone on to take part in additional courses, and mentor others through learning.

“We regularly see the positive impact community learning has on people suffering with low level mental health concerns,” said Rachel Loxston, Head of Operations at The Learning Curve. “This research will help identify which community learning courses are the most effective at improving mental health and wellbeing. The results of this project will be used to inform future government funding decisions, so this is a great opportunity for local people to influence national policy whilst taking part in some practical and creative courses.” The project, run as part of the National Community Mental Wellbeing Research campaign, is looking for more participants to join in September. The Wiltshire Festival of Engineering which takes place on Wednesday 28th September 2016, will provide young people with the opportunity to participate, explore and interact with local manufacturers engaged within the science, technology, engineering and mathematical sectors (STEM). Pupils will have the unique opportunity to interact with cutting-edge technology from organisations such as the UK Atomic Energy Authority and to have a go at some amazing activities provided by a host of businesses. The Festival, organised by Chippenham MP Michelle Donelan, aims to open new doors into the world of manufacturing and engineering, paving the way for a new skilled workforce here in Wiltshire. Many of Wiltshire’s most successful engineering and manufacturing companies have shown commitment for the Festival, which is being supported by the James Dyson Foundation. Event sponsors and attendees include major local technology sector businesses including Airbus, Good Energy, Great Western Railway, Atkins Global, Network Rail, Siemens, EDF and Hitachi. The Festival will also allow local companies such as IXYS, Danlers Ltd and Brunel Engineering to engage and inspire a new local elite workforce. The Festival will take place on Wednesday 28th September 2016 at Chippenham’s Olympiad Leisure Centre. School places are now full for the Wiltshire Festival of Engineering, however parents/guardians are welcome to bring along their children to the event between 4-5pm on the day. Family History Revealed

H

AVE you ever wondered who your ancestors are? Perhaps as you have children, and even grandchildren, you wonder what will they know about their family history? There are many genealogy resources on the Internet now – but do you find the task of doing all your own research daunting or have tried in the past and hit a brick wall or you are worried you have misidentified an ancestor? Family History Revealed was set up by Jonathan Seymour to help answer these questions. Our fixed priced Standard Family History Report will go back four generations to your great-great-grandparents and identify 30 direct line ancestors and their siblings. Alternatively a Customised Report that reflects your interests may be more appropriate or you may simply need some local support with your own research. Dr Jonathan Seymour’s background is in scientific research and I.T. consulting. More recently he has done research at The National Archives, Archives de Meurthe et Moselle at Nancy (France), Adoption Agency (Bristol) and several county archives in England including the local Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre. He has also recently run a family history project “MyFamily. MyRoots” at The Big Issue (Bristol) for street vendors to better understand their family roots and their links into larger society. Referral Link celebrates its first anniversary

O

N the 6th September 2016, Referral Link in Calne celebrates its first anniversary. The friendly, supportive group helps its members build their business through recommendations and referrals whilst providing a source of business knowledge and support in an informal atmosphere. Referral Link is delighted to announce that it will be supporting Carer Support Wiltshire over the next six months. This local charity supports unpaid carers in Wiltshire - an unpaid carer is someone who looks after a loved one who couldn’t manage without their help. The charity also helps carers to access support, services, education and training, and breaks from their caring role. They ensure carers in Wiltshire have a voice in policy making and planning for services, and they work with health and social care professionals and employers to develop best practice. Their aim is to create carer friendly communities where carers are recognised, valued and supported. Bianca Goss, Director of Bianca Goss Photography, who is a member of Referral Link, offered up her time to photograph the recent Investors in Carers GP Accreditation Scheme annual awards evening for the charity. The scheme recognises and celebrates those Wiltshire GP practices who have gone above and beyond to support unpaid carers. For more information on Carers Support Wiltshire please contact Jules Stanbridge at juless@ carersinwiltshire.co.uk or telephone 01380 872119. www.carersinwiltshire.co.uk The Referral Link meets every other Tuesday at The Dumb Post Inn in Bremhill from 8am – 10am. Funding for road safety campaigns backed by Hills Group

A

N exciting initiative, backed by The Hills Group, will see grants given out to community groups passionate about road safety in the towns and villages where they live. Hills is an active participant in the national ‘How’s My Driving?’ (HMD) scheme, with vehicles across its fleet displaying a distinctive sticker containing details which members of the public can use when reporting report driver behaviour. As part of the HMD scheme, a road safety steering group of logistics industry experts has been established to look into projects that promote a road safety culture. The steering group is able to offer funding to community groups who are trying to raise awareness of road safety in their area. In previous years, HMD grants have supported walking school buses, road safety youth film projects, as well as a touring play delivering a hard-hitting message to young adults about the perils of drinking and driving, to name but a few.

Hills is encouraging clubs, schools, individuals and not-for-profit groups in Wiltshire to apply for funding. Subash Ludhra, chairman of the HMD steering committee, said: “We will be focusing our efforts on using the grants for educational purposes, enabling the money to have a positive impact on local communities as well as the wider road safety sector.” The HMD scheme is a social enterprise company that reinvests any profits it makes from the sticker scheme back into road safety initiatives. More details on how to apply for a grant can be obtained from info@howsmy.co.uk The ‘How’s My Driving?’ steering group

'Real Life' gaming/puzzle experience for grown ups ! A great alternative way to spend an hour one weekend or evening. Bromham is the home of the newly opened 11th Hour Escape Rooms North Wiltshire's only Real Life Escape the Room Game for over 18s. Having really enjoyed playing a number of escape room games, Tim & Lizzie decided to open one themselves as there weren't any in their local area (They live in Calne). The concept of escape rooms is a relatively new phenomenon that is having global success. They are gaining popularity as a way of getting away from smartphones and computer screens and having some real life fun with friends or family. At 11th Hour Escape Rooms, a team of 2-6 players are locked in a room, or series of rooms and have 60 minutes to escape. There are clues and puzzles in the room that must be solved in order to find the escape key! "Most escape rooms have a theme and we are very proud of our musical theme as players act as fans of a world famous band (aptly called Exit Visa !) that have mysteriously gone missing." The current game: 'The Exit Visa Crisis - A Musical Mystery' is located in offices above the Audi sales centre, Devizes Road, near Bromham and there is plenty of free parking for customers on site. Tim & Lizzie stress that no prior musical knowledge is needed to play the game as everything needed to successfully escape is in the room with you. Check out the website for more details and how to book - www.11thHourEscapeRooms.co.uk There is also a facebook page www.facebook.com/11thHourEscapeRooms (Prices start from ÂŁ13 per person)

PinkBox Boutique

INKBOX BOUTIQUE, the Wiltshirebased multi-channel retailer offering artisan products suitable for friends, family or business colleagues has appointed its first ‘gift curator’. Liz Denbury has joined the PinkBox team offering Boutique@Home shopping parties for a great night in with friends, charitable causes or any social event. She said: “I’m thrilled to be part of PinkBox. I’m already going out and taking part in fairs and doing Boutique@ Home parties. I thoroughly enjoy the one-to-one role with the customer, finding out what their needs are and helping them select inspired gifts which are often locally produced.” Liz is also supporting PinkBox at its HQ in Meadow Barn, Coate, near Devizes with the day-to-day logistics of managing a busy retail business and meeting hub for local people and business owners. She started her career in the fashion industry rising to the role of manager but then left to have a family. She’s married to Andrew and they have two children, Poppy aged ten and Morgan, eight. Liz, who lives in Devizes, re-trained as a chef including running a school kitchen and met PinkBox founder Kerry Gover at a Christmas fair late last year. Kerry : “I was looking for somebody who would have a passion for products, people and who had a strong desire to start a business of their own and offer great customer service. Liz’s passion shone through and I thought that’s the person I need for PinkBox. Several months on, here she is as part of the team.” PinkBox Boutique was created by Kerry three years ago with the aim of reducing the pressure of choosing inspiring gifts. PinkBox offers a wide range of high quality products in a single place – many created by local suppliers including Wiltshire Chilli Farm, Hive Originals, In a Pickle, Stainswick Farm Rapeseed Oils and Pink & Green skincare. It is also one of the only outlets in Wiltshire to stock the unusual range of quirky handbags made by Vendula. The business has strong ethical values, buying in products from the UK where possible and supporting smaller businesses. It offers an artisan food range which contains no artificial colourings, ingredients, preservatives, skincare with no SLS, parabens or silicones and clean burning candles free from paraffin wax. 26

Kerry Gover, founder and managing director of PinkBox Boutique (right) with Liz Denbury, PinkBox gift curator. Earlier this year, PinkBox moved into a larger HQ, Meadow Barn, Coate in Devizes and has now opened a ‘hub’ facility where people can meet, run workshops or small events or shop privately by appointment. PinkBox is also thrilled to announce it's been chosen from thousands of SMEs across the country to take part in Small Biz 100 initiative which is part of the Small Business Saturday campaign. This national campaign, which is growing year on year, encourages people to buy locally especially in the run-up to Christmas. This year 101 businesses have been chosen and the team who run the campaign will feature and promote on social media a business a day in the 100 days in the run-up to Small Business Saturday on December 3. This year, there will be one day when two businesses will be promoted. Once the project has finished for 2016, there is often an event in London where all of the Small Biz winners will be invited. PinkBox founder Kerry Gover said: "We're so delighted to be selected from the thousands of businesses applying for this prestigious accolade. We've watched this campaign over the last few years and this year we were ready to apply and we cannot quite believe we've been successful. Congratulations to all of the other SMEs nationwide who are also part of this year's initiative."

Anyone interested in becoming a Gift Curator or in visiting the PinkBox HQ can find out more by contacting Kerry on kerrygover@pinkboxboutique.co.uk

Johnny Cash Tribute Show at Cherhill

F

Saturday 24 September St. James’ Church, Cherhill

OLLOWING the outstanding success of a previous visit, The Johnny Cash Show, is returning to St. James’ Church, Cherhill for another ‘rave in the nave’ This tribute performance which celebrates the ‘Man in Black’ will help to raise funds towards the church’s refurbishment and on-going maintenance. The performance will be given by Steve Smiley whose solo tribute act has earned him acclaim - filling venues throughout the UK, Europe and worldwide for his accomplished impersonation of the legendary country artist. Steve Smiley and his wife Laura form the ‘The Smileys’ – a duo who perform Country, Motown and Rock-n-Roll numbers from the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. The Smileys will entertain after the Man in Black performance and they will be certain to have the audience rocking in the aisles with numbers by Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Ronettes, Elvis, Willie Nelson, The Crystals, The Drifters, The Temptations, The Monkees, The Beatles, The Stones, Swinging Blue Jeans, Buddy Holly and many more. The show takes place at 8.00 pm on Saturday 24 September (doors will open at 7.00). Tickets, only available in advance, will cost £10. There will be a bar all evening. “This will be the sixth fund-raising concert we’ve staged in the Church …and the popularity of The Smileys as shown by their reception last time, will hopefully make this a sell-out event. We’re aiming for a capacity audience and as numbers are limited to 140, we would again urge people to buy tickets early to avoid disappointment,” says Shauna Bodman, who chairs the Fund-raising Committee. “The money raised goes towards the refurbishment and on-going maintenance of the church, parts of which date back to the 12th Century, and which today provides an increasingly invaluable community role.” To obtain tickets or further details about the event, please call 07763 581688.

School Woes W by Kate Duggan

HILE many children run through the classroom door each day, with barely a backwards glance, others, sadly, do not find the school experience such a happy one. The occasional grumble is rarely anything to worry about, but if your child frequently seems unhappy, you may need to intervene. Early intervention can help to avoid long-term issues, and your child is more likely to develop a love of learning if they enjoy the whole school experience. There are a range of reasons your child may dread going to school, from bullying, to being shy or particularly sensitive to noisy situations. They may simply not like their teacher, or struggle with being separated from you. Try to figure out exactly what’s bothering your child, and if there’s anything you can easily do to fix it. Would arranging some play dates help them to make friends? Could changing to packed lunches ease their dread of dinner time? Do they need more quality one-on-one time with you, to help them feel more secure when you’re not together? It isn’t always easy to get to the bottom of a child’s reluctance to walk through the school gates. Sometimes they can’t explain what it is that makes them scared, or they don’t feel able to tell you. But do persevere. Try to pick a neutral time to discuss it, and take it gently. Raise the subject when they’re feeling relaxed and up for talking, ie not right after school, when they’re tired, or when they want to just go and play. If your child is older, they may find it easier to open up to another family member or family friend, who isn’t involved in making them go to the place they dread every day. Once you have a better idea of what the problem is, book a time to speak to your child’s teacher, and, if needs be, the headteacher. They will be well used to dealing with a wide range of issues, from bullying to a lack of confidence, and should work with you to ease any problems. Do speak to your child about this first however, as you going into school could be exactly what they’re dreading and may make them clam up next time there’s a problem. The website www.bullying.co.uk has a wealth of advice for parents whose child is being bullied, including how to approach the school and how to discuss it with your child. The charity Family Lives offers a free, confidential helpline for parents on all aspects of raising a child, including issues with school. Call 0808 800 2222 or visit the website: www.familylives.org.uk for more information.

Are you considering buying a property with another person?

Buying a home is, for most of us, the biggest financial commitments we make so it pays to ensure any legal advice you seek is sound. Are you thinking about buying a property with another person – a partner, friend or parent? It may seem like the perfect solution, especially if you are younger or it’s your first home and it’s the only way you can get on to the property ladder. However life changes can occur - some good, others not so good – and this can mean joint ownership is not going to work any longer. What do you do then? Would a sudden change of plan create untold problems with an ex-partner or could it ruin a friendship or cause damage to a family relationship? If you are buying a property with another person you really do need to think about what your respective shares will be in the property and what will happen if WB Advertiser Conveyancing 2013_Layout 1 10/4/13 12:00 PM Page 1 things change.

The terms need to be clearly set out at the beginning. One solution might be A Declaration of Trust. This is a binding legal agreement which sets out the names of each owner of a property and the proportion they own of that property. It should also set out any rights or obligations associated with the ownership of the property.

Gareth Warren

This agreement should, for example, clearly outline the deposit each person paid, what share of the property each owner owns, how much each will contribute towards the mortgage repayments and how much each owner will contribute to fees. The agreement can even set out contributions towards household bills and expenses. It can also outline how you will approach one owner buying the other out - including how to get the property valued – as well as setting out if and when the property should be sold and how any equity should be divided in the event of a split. This type of agreement is particularly important if there is a significant imbalance in the financial contributions. It also provides a clear upfront contract which sets the tone of the management of the property in the future. The Declaration of Trust would be the point of reference in connection with any questions as to your financial interests in the property either when considering any future sale or indeed if there was a dispute later on. If you are considering buying a property with another person and you would like some expert advice and help, please feel free to contact Gareth Warren, an expert solicitor in our Homemove residential conveyancing team. Food & Drink

The George Inn at Sandy Lane This month we talk to Wyn Jones, Head Chef at The George Inn at Sandy Lane

WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT TO FIND WHEN THEY VISIT AND WHAT MAKES YOU DIFFERENT? Firstly; a genuine welcome, it’s not difficult to make people feel welcome, it’s what we are in business for. What makes the food different from the run of the mill pub grub, well the menu is a little bit different with Pigs cheek croquets and crispy pigs ear it not the usual fare. We are 100% home made and the big one is MADE TO ORDER which means fresh. Flexibility is our biggest difference, when you make fresh to order you can amend any dish to suit the needs of the customer. WHAT DISH IS THE MOST POPULAR WITH YOUR CUSTOMERS? We introduced a few old school dishes like lambs sweetbreads and these have far outsold the regular favourites, it’s great to see people try something they have not had before, some who have say it’s a blast from childhood. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE OR SIGNATURE DISH? Well, this is always a tough one to answer, as a chef it’s usually your latest creation, but would have to go for my: Pan fried Sea Bass with white wine and garlic poached Welsh mussels, served with samphire tossed in ginger and chilli butter.

THERE’S QUITE A STRONG ARTISAN FOOD AND DRINK SCENE IN WILTSHIRE, HOW DO YOU FIND WORKING WITH LOCAL SUPPLIERS? It’s the only way for myself and owner Helen, we are so very lucky in this part of the world we have some of the best producers on our doorstep delivering daily.

Wyn Jones, Head Chef pie. There’s an interesting recipe for Devizes Pie but I will leave the readers to look that one up! HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A PROFESSIONAL CHEF? It’s the only job I have ever had, 11 years. I started as a young kitchen porter at the age of 15, mum still thinks she can tell me how to make gravy.

HAVE YOU FOUND ANY OLD RECIPES THAT RELATE TO THE WILTSHIRE AREA? Wiltshire was famed for its pig farmers, and we’ve had a couple of customers who remember helping their uncles when they were evacuated to Wiltshire from London during the war. My favourite would have to be a traditional Wiltshire pork 40

WHAT FOOD TRENDS CAN YOU SEE IN THE FUTURE? More Veggies please! Vegetarianism is a constant trend, if you can call it a trend, which is set to increase, we should pay more attention to imaginative alternatives. The other is simplified ingredients, people don’t want to see a list of E numbers and emulsifiers. We even make our own ice cream so it’s all good. WHO ARE YOUR CURRENT FOOD HEROES AND HAVE YOU BEEN LUCKY ENOUGH TO MEET/WORK WITH ANY OF THEM? I wish I had, but sadly I am still hopeful of meeting one of them. First up would be Michel Roux - classic foundations in french cuisine.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEBODY WHO WANTS TO HAVE A CAREER AS A CHEF? Start at the bottom and don’t forget what it was like there! Learn your craft from the beginning and listen to the masters. It’s a passion not a job, if you have that and are prepared to work from the start, not thinking you can cook you will have respect for the art. WOULD YOU BE INTERESTED IN ENTERING A TV COOKERY SHOW? No not at all. I love what I do, I’m still on my journey in my career and still achieving personal goals.

Method for the Batter

Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 40 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients 100g plain flour ½ tsp English mus tard powder Good pinch of salt 1 egg 300ml milk 1 tsp dried thyme 8 plain pork sausag es 2 tbsp sunflower oil 2 onions, peeled an d sliced 1 tsp soft brown su gar 500ml good quali ty beef stock

42

Preheat oven to 220C / gas 7. Sift the flour, salt and mustard powder together into a large mixing bowl. Make a well in the centre or the flour, crack in the egg, then pour in a little milk. Stir with a wooden spoon or a balloon whisk, gradually incorporating some of the flour. Keep adding milk and continue stirring until all the milk and flour has been mixed together and the batter is smooth and lump-free. It should be the consistency of unwhipped double cream. Stir in the thyme. Place the sausages into a 20 x 30cm roasting tin. Add 1 tbsp of the oil, tossing the sausages in it to thoroughly coat the base of the tin, then roast in the oven for 15 mins.

The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2016

Remove the hot tray from the oven, then quickly pour in the batter – it will sizzle and bubble a little when it hits the hot fat. Return the tray to the oven. Bake for 40 mins until the batter is cooked, well risen and crispy. Method for the Gravy Cook the onions with the remaining oil gently in a non-stick pan until they are golden brown. Caramelise them by adding the sugar for the final 5 minutes. Add the spoonful of flour, then cook, stirring continuously, for 2 mins. Gradually pour in the stock, stirring well to make a smooth sauce. Simmer for 4-5 mins to thicken, then season to taste. Cut the toad in the hole into large wedges and serve with the gravy spooned over

Cider

T is believed that cider existed as long ago as Roman times, but its popularity in the UK stems from just after the Norman Conquest.

I

mass-produced varieties appear similar to sparkling wine whereas traditionally brewed varieties tend to be darker and stronger. A lot depends on ingredients and technique.

The UK has the highest per capita consumption of cider and the largest cider producing companies. Cider is the thirst-quenching choice for many on a long hot summer’s day.

Historically West Country varieties use cider apples and a pressing process which involves layers of straw rather than cloths. In Eastern Counties it is more usual for a variety of eating and cooking apples to be used.

Ciders range from sweet to dry and can be cloudy amber in colour, brown or even clear liquids. Modern

Scrumpy is one of the most famous forms of traditional cider. It is usually cloudy, has little or no carbonation, and a high alcohol content. When pears are used rather than apples the drink is known as Perry. Some of the big producers now have specific pear varieties and there are also many popular ‘fruit’ based contemporary brands which are created by adding other fruits to apple cider. Low alcohol versions are available meaning that cider can be enjoyed by everyone.. by Susan Brookes-Morris

British Food Fortnight 17th September - 2nd October 2016 British Food Fortnight exists to put British food firmly in the spotlight. Game Pie

Method Heat half the oil in a large saucepan.

Preparation time: 35 minutes + cooling Cooking time: Approximately 2 hours Serves 6

Fry the game cubes in batches until brown. Remove the game to a plate and add the remaining oil to the pan, fry the shallots, garlic, lardons, carrots and celery for 10 minutes, stirring until lightly golden in colour.

Ingredients

Add the flour to the pan and cook for one minute, then gradually stir in the stock, followed by the red wine, then the redcurrant jelly, and bring to the boil.

2 tbsp sunflower oil 800g/ 1lb 12oz boneless mixed game (rabbit, venison, pheasant etc), cut into 2.5cm / 1 inch cubes 225g / 8oz shallots, peeled and halved 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 100g / 3.5oz smoked bacon lardons 175g / 6oz carrots, chopped 2 sticks celery, roughly chopped 2 tbsp flour, plus extra for dusting 300ml / 10fl oz chicken stock 200ml / 7fl oz red wine 2 tbsp redcurrant jelly Few sprigs of fresh thyme 500g / 1lb 2oz pack puff pastry Salt and pepper Beaten egg to glaze

44

The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2016

Return the meat to the pan and add the thyme. Season with salt and pepper, cover and simmer gently for about an hour, until the meat is tender. Preheat the oven to 220C / Gas mark 7. Transfer the game casserole to a large pie dish. Place a pie funnel (if using) in the centre and dampen the rim of the dish with water. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to about 5cm / 2 inches wider then the dish. Cut a 2.5cm / 1 inch strip of pastry from the outer edge, brush with water and use to line the rim of the dish. Then brush the pastry rim with water and top with the pastry lid. Seal, trim and crimp the pastry edges, and decorate the top of the pie with pastry trimmings. Glaze the pie with the beaten egg. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until the pastry is risen and golden.

Why Take Your Baby or Toddler Swimming? Because it’s educational, potentially life-saving and really good fun!

S

WIMMING is one of the few things your baby can do from birth, and as well as being fantastic for them, it’s also one of the healthiest activities for you too. In water, little ones are able to exercise every muscle in their body – including some they wouldn’t yet find on land. Whilst the emphasis in our sessions is on strengthening the bond between parent and child, swimming from birth is also excellent for their development. During their first year of life, a baby’s brain grows more rapidly than at any other time, with every movement they make helping to strengthen this growth. Despite looking gentle, swimming provides a complete physical workout, strengthening the heart, lungs and respiratory system which, in turn, aids development of the brain. What’s more, regular swimming can enhance their awareness while improving eating and sleeping patterns – a definite bonus for parents!

A weekly swim session will also help them develop physically, emotionally and mentally. For instance, right from the word go they’ll be learning to respond to voice commands, which is fantastic stimulation for a newborn baby’s brain. Water familiarisation is an equally important aspect. Babies who swim on a regular basis develop a respect for water and can be taught potentially lifesaving skills. And these skills kick in from remarkably early on, proven by the fact that Water Babies pupils as young as two have saved themselves from drowning. So with so many good reasons to take your little one swimming, how do you make sure you choose the right baby swim school? Choosing a swim school Teaching babies to swim from birth is a skilled profession, requiring considerable in-depth knowledge. However there is fairly limited regulation, so it’s vital that as a parent you take the time to make a well informed choice about which classes you choose to take your little one to. Training Always check the qualifications and experience the teachers of the swim school must gain and don’t be afraid to ask questions. A good company will be happy to answer your questions! Incredibly, every

Water Babies teacher could have trained as a private pilot – five times over – in the time it takes them to fully qualify! Structure Some classes will simply get your child used to the pool while others are more structured, with a distinct course progression designed to help them hit key milestones. The Water Babies programme is endorsed by the national governing body for swimming, the ASA, and gives young swimmers the chance to progress into mainstream swimming lessons earlier, enabling them to continue their aquatic adventure as they grow. Fun! Baby swimming is a relaxing and enjoyable activity, perfectly designed to enhance the parent/ child bond. Whichever route you choose, the emphasis should always be on you feeling like you’re evolving at your child’s own pace, and on both of you having fun.

Water Babies classes are available in Calne, Chippenham, Devizes and Trowbridge. For more information, please phone: 01249 248863 Email: bubba@waterbabies.co.uk or visit www.waterbabies.co.uk

Choosing a Nursery C

HOOSING your child’s nursery can be daunting, especially if you are a first time parent, but there are steps you can take to make it easier. First, check the hours on offer at your local private or council run nurseries. Find out the hourly/daily/ weekly costs and if they have any places available. Read Ofsted reports to give an idea of how well they are run and how the needs of the children are being met. From here, make a shortlist and arrange to visit several nurseries, when you should look out for the following: Staff - What is their training and experience? How do they interact with the children? What is the staff to child ratio? Do they use a similar approach to the children as you? Children - Do they seem busy and relaxed? Are they happy and purposeful? What is the intake? Premises - Are they clean, well maintained and secure? Are you happy with their size? Do they feel welcoming? Is there an outside play space? Activities - Are they fun and interesting? Is time set aside for exercise and relaxation? Speak to local schools and other parents as this can aid the selection process, but mostly go with your gut feeling - and remember to book well in advance as the best nurseries tend to get booked up quickly!

Health Matters

Midlife MOT

A

by Emmy Butcher

PPARENTLY, 60 is the new 40, which is great news for me as I celebrated my 40th birthday in August. I think this means that 40 is the new 20 – I just wish someone had told gravity that this was the case because I am certainly a little bit saggier here and there than when I was in my twenties the first time round. According to friends who have been ticking the ‘Over 40’ box for several years, it’s not all downhill to 60 from here. There’s a very exciting roller coaster of more confidence, wisdom and patience that apparently come with the wrinkles, grey hair and saggy bottom. I’m not going to grow old gracefully – I’m putting up a fight, I’ve decided. To start this anti-aging campaign I have pledged to look after myself better. In particular, when it comes to my health. So, yes, I’m back on the dreaded diet and exercising with gusto. My hairdresser keeps me looking as blonde as she possibly can without all my hair falling out and I have that many face creams I might as well be pickled in retinol. I also have my NHS Health Check to look forward to, the five year cycle of which starts at age forty. Dubbed the ‘midlife MOT’ I am quite interested to find out if I will pass. With cake being my main fuel, I am certain that I might need a little work doing to get me roadworthy - my spark plugs probably need replacing and I am hoping they won’t notice my flat spare tyre. Best not to mention about how noisy my exhaust is! In Wiltshire, if you do not already have a pre-existing vascular condition, you too will be lucky enough to be invited by your GP Surgery to come in for your NHS Health Check. You will receive your first invitation around your 40th Birthday and then every five years thereafter until you reach 75. Patients who suffer from long term illnesses such as high blood pressure, ischaemic heart disease or diabetes will already be having regular check-ups as part of their routine care and so will not need an additional health check. The NHS Health Check provides circular and vascular screening for our healthy patients, giving the opportunity to look at your risk of developing a disabling vascular disease, like diabetes, chronic kidney disease and stroke and providing advice on changes you can make to help to avoid this. Vascular diseases are the largest common cause for preventable

death in the UK and the NHS Health Check aims to save 650 lives, prevent 1600 heart attacks and strokes, prevent 4000 people from developing type 2 diabetes and detect at least 20,000 cases of type 2 diabetes and kidney disease earlier, every year. During your MOT, you will be asked some questions about your overall health and lifestyle. Your family medical history will also be taken into consideration and you will also have some routine tests such as your blood pressure and a sample of your blood to test. From this information, your healthcare professional will be able to give you an idea of your risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and type 2 diabetes. They will also provide you with an overall score called your QRisk score – which will give an indication of your risk of heart disease or stroke. A series of questions designed to test your memory may also be carried out if you are aged over 65 and you will be made aware of the signs and symptoms of dementia so you know what to look out for if you do start experiencing memory loss. Your Health Check means that your GP Surgery can learn a little bit more about how they can help keep you fit and well and your healthcare professional will be able to support you with any lifestyle changes you may be advised to make to reduce your risk of developing a long term illness. If your Health Check results show that you have a high risk score, then your GP will be able to discuss if there are any medical preventions (such as blood pressure or cholesterol medication) which can help. As regular readers know, I have a particularly sweet tooth, so I am fairly sure that less cake on the couch and more apples and aerobics will be the advice given to me to reduce my risk score. However, now I am forty I am mature enough to know that this is good advice. I am prepared to limit my cake intake and increase my complex carbs for a healthier happier me. It sounds like I’m getting the hang of being older and wiser…….oh dear! Emmy Butcher Practice Manager & Business Partner Beversbrook Medical Centre emmybutcher@nhs.net

Challenge yourself and help Wiltshire Air Ambulance save lives

T

REKKING the Great Wall of China and cycling through the Wiltshire countryside are among the challenge events that Wiltshire Air Ambulance is running to raise money for its lifesaving service. The charity has places available in the Wiltshire Big Wheel/100 cycle challenge on Sunday 25 September 2016 and for its overseas trek to the Great Wall of China from 21 to 30 September 2017. The Wiltshire Big Wheel has a choice of routes from a 12 mile family route, 45 miles or 100 miles, all starting and finishing in Devizes. The Great Wall of China trek involves walking about 60 kms. Rebecca de la Bedoyere, Senior Fundraising Manager at WAA, said: “We’re encouraging people to get outdoors and challenge themselves to help keep our lifesaving aircraft and crew flying. One of the best things about Wiltshire is that we have the most incredible landscape, perfect for hiking, cycling and just spending time in the open. “Our fantastic cycling event, the Wiltshire Big Wheel/100, is a great way to explore our beautiful county. For those who want an adventure further afield, we’re looking for intrepid explorers to take on one of the wonders of the world, the Great Wall of China. Walking the Great Wall of China is on many people’s bucket lists and we are absolutely thrilled to offer this once-in-a-lifetime experience. “If you prefer running we have places available for the Bath Half Marathon, which is taking place on 12 March 2017. Or if you want to take in our beautiful county from the skies, we can even help you organise a sky dive. Whatever you do to challenge yourself, you’ll be supporting and making a real difference to our vital work.” For more information about Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s challenge events email kenresa@wiltshireairambulance.co.uk or visit www.wiltshireairambulance.co.uk 56

Scented Narcissi I

by Rachel Leverton

KNOW it’s only just September but I need to talk about ... Christmas! Before you all pelt me with clay flowerpots just hear me out. A little advance planning now and when skies are dark and the north wind blows you’ll reap the benefits. Everyone knows about potted hyacinths, ubiquitous during the festive period. They smell heavenly but let’s face it everyone has them and they’re a bit oldhat. I have the answer: scented narcissi. To my mind they’re more elegant and fit better into contemporary homes. The two varieties I grow are Paper White, which is my favourite, because it’s white and so seems to fit in with the whole Christmas theme, and Grand Soleil d’Or for when I need a sunnier, yellow bloom. Both varieties have tiny flowers, clustered at the top of straight, long stems and, if planted now they will be in flower before Christmas. I tend to plant a few pots now (they’re great as economical gifts for those hard-to-buy-for elderly relatives) plus a pot per week for myself between now and the end of October so I can have the luxury of scented bulbs continuously in flower for a couple of months during the bleak winter period.

You need to buy ‘prepared’ bulbs which have been heat-treated to make them flower before Christmas. I tend to plant one variety per pot because I think that provides more impact but you can plant to suit your own tastes. I use a nice 15cm / 6 inch pot with drainage holes (so there’s no danger of water-logging) and fill it with soil-less multipurpose compost. I cram as many bulbs in as I can, leaving just the pointy bit of the bulb protruding. Then I water them and keep them in a cool dark place until the flower shoots are visible. Within a fortnight of bringing them into a warm room they will flower. Have some split green canes on hand with some twine so if the stems need support you can provide it. Then just sniff and enjoy.

Green fingers given chance to blossom at Corsham Primary School

P

UPILS at Corsham Primary School will be able to get their hands dirty with a range of horticulture projects after winning a competition to show the best way of using compost in a school garden. The competition, run by local company Hills Waste Solutions, was held in conjunction with Compost Awareness Week earlier this year. Hills offered schools across Wiltshire free bags of its Warrior compost and the schools were set the challenge of showing how they could make the best use of the product. Around 450 bags of compost were collected by enthusiastic schoolchildren for their gardens. Of the schools which entered, Corsham Primary School came out on top with its garden project booklet, showing off the hard work carried out by members of the gardening club. The students received the good news before they set off for their summer holidays and are looking forward to getting back to the project. A club member said: “We were very delighted to send off our garden project booklet. At Corsham Primary we

are all keen gardeners and love making our gardens look beautiful as well as grow as many vegetables as we possibly can.” The garden club also said it would spend the £50 voucher it won on much-needed gardening equipment. The schools which were highly commended were: Malmesbury Primary School, St Edmunds Catholic Primary School in Calne, Busy Bees Preschool in Southwick, Lypiatt Primary School and Early Years Centre in Corsham and Shaw C of E Primary School in Melksham. Warrior Compost is made from green waste collected from Wiltshire residents. It is peat-free, certified to BSI PAS100 standard and accredited by both the Association for Organics Recycling and the Soil Association.

Books

A Good Read

The Snowman by Jo Nesbø

............................................................................................... A bit of a different novel this month and a genre that is growing in popularity these days: Nordic noir. ‘The Snowman’ is about as far from Miss Marple as you can get and will appeal to fans of Stig Larsson’s ‘Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’. Nesbø is the creator of Harry Hole, an ex-alcoholic detective from Oslo. Hole became famous when he was sent to Australia to help solve the murder of a Norwegian citizen. This sealed his reputation upon his return to Norway: a country lacking in serial killers. Until the events of ‘The Snowman’. In this, the seventh Harry Hole book, women start to go missing from the Oslo area. They all have one thing in common: they are all married. In each case there doesn’t seem to be any reason why these women would go missing. Marital status alone is not enough to make a connection but in these snowy regions of Northern Europe there is one more similarity between the cases. In each case a snowman appears at the murder scene. This is an engrossing novel which draws you, not only into the case, but into Hole’s life in the capital of Norway. As in all of Nesbø’s novels, the city of Oslo and the surrounding areas come to life almost as if they were characters in their own right. Hole is far from a hero, his character flaws are ever present and conflict between him and his colleagues is a common theme. As with many novels in this genre life is shown, warts and all, and it makes for a novel that is dark, bleak, alien, and yet one you will struggle to put down.

Titanic: An Edwardian Girl’s Diary 1912 by Ellen Emerson White

.............................................................................................. There can be very few adults who have not heard of the sinking of the Titanic on its maiden voyage in 1912 and for young readers this novel offers an introduction to this key historical event which changed the safety measures on ships for ever. The ‘My Story’ books are diaries which help to teach children of key events in British history. In this novel 12-year-old Margaret Anne Brady is an orphan who dreams of escaping her life. Following the death of her father five years earlier she was left at the orphanage by her older brother as he had to go to America to seek a new life and could not take her with him. Ever since then she has dreamed of being reunited with him. So she cannot believe her luck when she is chosen to accompany wealthy American Mrs Carstairs across the Atlantic. Finally, she can be reunited with her brother. But their passage is booked on The RMS Titanic. This floating microcosm of all layers of British society is about to meet its demise and change the lives of many, including Margaret. With vivid descriptions of life aboard the ship, with its crisp white tablecloths, the reader is transported back to the Edwardian era where she learns that class is everything and decides if you live or die.

A

Guard your heart

Vicar was preparing for a sermon one Sunday morning, shaving in front of his bathroom mirror. Unfortunately, he lost concentration, being so preoccupied with the sermon, that he ended cutting himself several times. He looked such a state as he climbed the stairs up to the pulpit, with tissue paper stuck to his face and little red dots of blood on his cheeks, that he spent the first three minutes of his sermon explaining to folk what had happened. “I was thinking so much about the sermon, I cut my face”, he said. Suddenly, a voice from the congregation shouted out, “next time think about your face and cut the sermon!” Voices from the crowd or those gathered around Jesus are quite common in the Gospels. On one occasion, Jesus was asked by a random voice to settle a legal dispute concerning an inheritance between two brothers, presumably after a bereavement. We’ve all seen what can happen to families in the aftermath of a loss of a loved one. All too quickly, it can descend into squabbling and acrimony. Someone once said, “Where there is a will, there is a war.” Jesus refuses to get involved in the legalities in this case. Jesus knows that the man in the crowd is not pleading for justice, he just wants more money. Jesus knows this man’s heart. There were plenty of lawyers around to defend his cause, but none would address the most pressing concern for this man’s soul: the influence of Greed. Greed affects us all, sometimes subtly, sometimes more obviously. The love of money or possessions manifests itself in innumerable ways: it can be the desire to have the flashy car, bigger house, exotic holiday, designer handbag, expensive jewellery, or the latest electronic gadget. Greed affects both rich and poor alike. There is a cartoon I once read with two men smoking cigars sitting on a huge pile of money. One says to the other, “so then now that we have half the world’s wealth are you thinking what I’m thinking?” The other replies, “Too right, let’s get the other half ”. Greed is the drive for us to get more, to have more and to keep more. Too much of it and you might end up in Broadmoor!

66

The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2016

There are antidotes to greed. Firstly, do your best to give and share your money and possessions with others. The power of money is quickly neutralised when you give it away. Secondly, do your best to put God first. God is Sovereign and God is the one that brings the true security that lasts for ever. Jesus went on to speak to the whole crowd that day and, as He often did, told them a story. It was a parable about a foolish man who built bigger, better barns so that he could “relax, eat, drink and be merry” (Luke 11). Tragically, after his work was completed, the man died before he had a chance to enjoy his wealth and retirement. It’s a story we can all relate to. What’s its meaning? Well, I guess that Jesus is pointing out to us that money and possessions can only ever be here today and gone tomorrow. There’s no pockets in shrouds! Rather than money, we should be working to build up treasures in heaven. The good deeds and the sincere faith that are guaranteed to endure into eternity. I want you to try something. Put you hand on your chest and feel the beating of your own heart; take a little time to feel its rhythm. Nothing is more important in life to God than the soul. God has set eternity in the heart of every human being (Eccles. 3 v 11). That includes you. Sins like greed are dangerous and hurtful to us, not because they make God love us any less, but because they damage us. They injure the soul and our relationship with God. The Lord loves us too much to ignore the soul within each one of us. Let’s resist greed or others sins that put temporary satisfaction before eternal reward. Turning away from such sin, and being forgiven of it, will help us guard and protect our hearts, preventing our hearts from being hardened in this harsh world. As the book of Proverbs says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Rev Philip Bromiley (philbromiley@hotmail.co.uk) Design, Illustration & Computer Graphics by Alexander S. Grenfell, Calne.

National Friendship Month

W

HERE would we be without friends? It’s said that friends make the good times better, and the bad times bearable. This month, it’s time to celebrate our friendships, as September is National Friendship Month. In the UK, the month is attributed to The Oddfellows, one of the largest and oldest friendly societies. For them, it’s ‘an annual campaign to bring communities together and highlight the importance of friendships.’ Research from the University of North Carolina shows that spending time with friends can make us happier and healthier. Whilst many feel it’s preferable to be with those who are positive, supportive and share good news, some believe that having close friends who they can have a good moan to and get things off their chest with is also beneficial. Groups tend to find their own norms over time in terms of what they talk about, what activities they do and how they behave. You may have heard the expressions ’Friends are the family you choose’, or ‘You can’t choose your family but you can choose your friends’ and it’s true that some have tighter bonds with friends than family members. Many say that there is something particularly special about a woman’s friendship with other women and in 2009 the Kappa Delta Sorority decided to make September International Women’s Friendship month, so perhaps for females there are two reasons to celebrate.

68

The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2016

But, with Sociologist Gerald Mollenhorst reporting in 2012 that most of us replace half of our friends every seven years, it’s good to keep an eye out for new friends as well as celebrate long standing relationships. For some, connections will last decades but others will be for just a certain stage of a person’s life. Some talk about outgrowing their friends or moving away from damaging peer groups for example and couples divorcing can often cause a split in friendship groups. Oddfellows are helping people to build new friendships during September, by organising a range of special activities to complement their annual programme. These include walks, tea dances and craft workshops with the theme of bringing people of all ages together over a simple cuppa. You can find details at: https://www.oddfellows.co.uk/Events/ FriendshipMonth. Or you could mark the month in your own special way. Plan a coffee morning, buy your friends a gift or just take time to tell them how much they mean to you. You could also reconnect with long lost pals. Social media has enabled a whole new way of keeping in touch with those who are remote and you could also try having face to face style conversations with free calling services such as Skype or Apple’s Face Time.
