Calne Lions Duck Race 14th May 2016

Once upon a time in Sainsbury’s Chippenham

Starting on the 29th March Calne Lions will be selling Duck Race tickets we will be out each evening, Monday to Friday and will post on our facebook page Calne Lions and shoutout Calne our destination for the evening. This event raises money for our local community and this year we have given money to Calne Link the physically handicapped club. We have taken pensioners to Cherhill panto, supported Calne Rugby Club with new post protectors for their club. We have given to the Barnardos Childrens Centre. We are short of walking volunteers - if anyone would like to help us sell tickets please contact Lion Rachel Lambert on 07961 768407 - without volunteers these events will not carry on and it is such a fantastic event for the town and all money raised goes towards good causes. Every penny counts is the Lions motto - nothing goes on administration, all money goes to where it is needed. Tickets will also be on sale in Sainsburys on Saturdays and online at calnelions.org. Please feel free to also message us on our Facebook page Calne Lions.

Sainsbury’s Rochelle Oliver with the staff and Children from Frogwell School Sainsbury’s has signed up to the Vision for Literacy Business Pledge which is an exciting project led by the National Literacy Forum, to demonstrate their commitment to tackling the literacy challenges faced by communities in the UK. Sainsbury’s Chippenham invited Frogwell School children for a story time event at the store. Rochelle Oliver, from the Chippenham store, read the story ‘Room on the Broom’. The 23 children were all dressed up as their favourite book characters for the special event. Every child received a goodie bag to take home which included a balloon, Thomas the Tank Engine activity pack and a Julia Donaldson book. Mrs Jenkins Reception class teacher said, “Thankyou to Sainsbury’s for hosting the event, the children really enjoyed it” Paul Gunter Store Manager at Sainsbury’s Chippenham, added: “We’re always looking for ways to work within the local community. Child literacy is extremely important and this was a fun way for the children from Frogwell School to get involved with reading. For the colleagues it was a flashback to their childhood so they had as much fun as the children.”

Do you have what it takes to become a self-published author? Special workshop for writers in the Chippenham area When creative writing tutor Alison Knight’s students asked her how they could self-publish their novels and stories, her response was ‘I don’t know, but I know someone who can!’ She asked bestselling author Lizzie Lamb if she would come to Chippenham and talk about self-publishing.

Lizzie Lamb founded the New Romantics Press in 2012 with three other writers in the Leicester area. The group has published 11 books between them to date, including 3 of Lizzie’s – Scotch on the Rocks; Boot Camp Bride; and Tall, Dark & Kilted. She has been at the top of the Amazon Best Seller list for each title. Her latest book has been short-listed for the prestigious Exeter Novel prize - a first for a selfpublished author. Her Lizzie Lamb fourth novel is due out this year. Since her first book was published, Lizzie has turned down offers from two publishers because they didn’t offer the level of profit she could achieve herself. The workshop, entitled ‘Self-Publishing is NOT for Sissies!’ will take place at the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre in Cocklebury Road, Chippenham, (just a couple of minutes’ walk from the railway station) from 12.30-4.30pm on Saturday 14th May. Lizzie will take people through her experiences, giving them opportunity to make their own plan for self-publishing. There will be lots of helpful advice and some practical exercises. Tickets are £25, including light refreshments, and parking at the centre is free. ‘For anyone wishing to self-publish, this is a great investment,’ says Alison Knight. ‘Lizzie is very good at what she does and we will all learn a great deal from her experience.’ For more information, and to book your place, please contact Alison on 01249 819554, or email alison_knight59@yahoo.co.uk. Tickets can be also obtained from the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre, Cocklebury Road, Chippenham.

The full programme consists of: Mendelssohn - Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage Overture Brahms - Variations on a Theme by Haydn (Opus 56) (St Antonin Chorale) Beethoven - Symphony No 3 (Eroica) Tickets at £12 (£10 concessions) are available from The Abbey bookshop, Michael Thomas Butchers at The Triangle Malmesbury, and the website www.wco.org.uk. WCO performs 3 concerts a year and apart from the orchestral classics it includes film and stage music and the lighter music repertoire and anything else that it fancies! WCO meets on a Monday night in Chippenham and anyone interested in joining this friendly but committed group of players should contact the Musical Director on md@ wco.org.uk to enquire about vacancies.

OUTLINE PLANS FOR WILTSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE’S NEW HOME ARE GRANTED AN Outline Planning Application to build a new home for Wiltshire Air Ambulance (WAA) has been granted by Wiltshire Council. The new home, on land at Outmarsh Farm, Semington, near Melksham, will bring together WAA’s helicopter, aircrew and charity team onto one site for the first time. The Outline Planning Application received no objections. The next stage for WAA is to undertake further public consultation to obtain the views of local people and stakeholders on the proposed design of the new home, before submitting a Reserved Matters Planning Application to Wiltshire Council. Kevin Reed, Head of Operations at WAA, said: “We are delighted to have received Outline Planning Permission from Wiltshire Council. We searched for over a year to find the most suitable site to build our new home and we carried out extensive public consultation before we submitted our Outline Planning Application. “The Outmarsh Farm site will enable us to have full control over the land and be future proof. It is centrally located in Wiltshire which would enable our helicopter to reach all parts of the county within

11 minutes. As Melksham does not have an ambulance station, we believe that Wiltshire Air Ambulance would provide enhanced medical cover for the area. As well as responding in our helicopter our paramedics, who have advanced medical skills, can also respond to emergencies such as road traffic collisions, heart attacks and strokes in a Rapid Response Vehicle (car). “Now we will work on the detailed design of our new home and information on the public consultation we will undertake will be announced in due course.” Currently the helicopter and aircrew are based at a hangar at Wiltshire Police Headquarters in Devizes, while the charity team is based at offices on Porte Marsh Industrial Estate, Calne. The lease on the hangar runs out on 31 December 2017 and the lease on the offices runs out at the end of January 2018. The new home will cost up to £4 million, of which WAA hopes to raise £1 million through a Capital Appeal. The remainder will be funded by a private benefactor, who wishes to remain anonymous. WAA’s Outline Planning Application can be viewed online at www.wiltshire. gov.uk and the reference number is 15/10766/OUT

E. Wootten & Son 1926-2016 Edwin Wootten was born in Calne in 1888, and on leaving school worked for Phillip Brothers (formerly Adcock & Norris), furniture and funeral shop in High Street Calne. After leaving this company, Edwin who lived in Oxford Road Calne began restoring furniture and upholstery and arranging one or two funerals from a shed in his back garden. Within a year he had purchased a builder’s yard and opened a furniture shop in North Street. His business card read: E. WOOTTEN Practical Furnisher & Undertaker Repairs & House Fittings of every description Mattresses Re-upholstered Undertaking This family business became renowned for a high quality of service and client care. Edwin retired in 1954 leaving his son Ron to provide a caring and professional service to the community for which he was well respected

and appreciated. Woottens became the first undertakers locally, to purchase a motorised hearse and remained a leader within the everchanging business of funeral directing in the years that followed. At the end of 2014, E. Wootten & Son were taken under the wing of Dignity Caring Funeral services, a well known and respected organisation. However, Funeral Directors Jennifer and Shaun and their care team continue in the old fashioned Wootten's way that Calne has become accustomed to. At E. Wootten & Son, we strive to set the highest standards for the funeral profession in terms of client service and care for the deceased. We help people through one of the most difficult times in their lives with compassion, respect, openness and care.

Cubs discover Fairtrade Sainsbury’s Chippenham hosted a Fairtrade evening for the 10th Chippenham Jubilee Cubs. The evening consisted of Fairtrade activities such as ‘we’re going on a Fairtrade hunt’ around the store. This activity helped the children learn more about the wide range of Fairtrade products which Sainsbury’s sell. At the end of the evening the children took part in a Fairtrade quiz, which really showed how much they had learnt. Penny James from 10th Chippenham Jubilee Cubs said “10th Chippenham Jubilee Cubs thoroughly enjoyed their evening at Sainsbury’s. They had a great time learning all about Fairtrade and finding Fairtrade products in the store, as part of their Global Issues badge.” Sainsbury’s Chippenham Store Manager Paul Gunter said “We’re proud to be the biggest retailer of Fairtrade products and we very much enjoy working with local groups and schools to help them learn more about Fairtrade and what it means”.

Wiltshire Citizens Advice clears up pension jargon baffling consumers “Flexi-access drawdown”, “open market option” and “safeguarded benefits” are some of the pension terms most confusing for consumers, reveals Wiltshire Citizens Advice The local charity, which delivers face to face Pension Wise appointments in Wiltshire, South Gloucestershire, Bristol and Bath says people would find it easier to understand their pensions if the industry used simple, standard language to describe their products. Some people are also unclear about terms which appear to be more straightforward, putting them at risk of missing out on the best pension options for them. For example; staff have reported cases where consumers wrongly believed that their ‘selected retirement date’ was set in stone as the date they could access their pension, when in fact they could have accessed their savings ahead of this date. To help people get to grips with their pension, Pension Wise guiders have identified the pensions jargon which people find most perplexing and have explained them in simple terms. Recent research from national Citizens Advice shows more than a quarter of people with defined contribution pensions feel that they don’t understand their pension plan, while fewer than one in five feel very confident. Albert Ball, Pension Wise Project Manager said: “Pension decisions can be hard enough without having to translate tricky wording. Many people coming to visit us are mystified by the jargon being used and our staff are here to help clear up the confusing language. Having a better understanding of what the terms mean puts consumers on a better path to choosing a retirement option which suits them.” To book a free face to face or telephone Pension Wise appointment, if you are over 50, call 0300 330 1001 or visit www.pensionwise.gov.uk. You can also book an appointment for a later date by visiting your local Citizens Advice office.

Trek Cambodia for RUH Cancer Care! Have you ever wanted to take on an exhilarating challenge and raise funds for a charity that is close to your heart? If so, then now is your chance. The Forever Friends Appeal, the primary charity for Bath’s Royal United Hospital are looking for 18 adventurous people from across Bath, Somerset and Wiltshire to join their 95km trek across Cambodia which will journey through the ancient city of Angor Wat– known as the realm of the gods! The Appeal team hope that in November 2016 a team of 18 fundraisers will take part in this experience of a lifetime – at the same time as raising significant funds for the charity. The current focus of The Forever Friends Appeal is the RUH Cancer Care Campaign – to raise a minimum of £8.5 million towards the build of a pioneering new Cancer Centre for the RUH. By signing up to join the trek, people will be helping to transform care for patients with cancer and their families at the RUH.

Event & Community Officer for The Forever Friends Appeal, Emily Lynch comments: “This is the Appeal’s third annual overseas trek where participants can choose to fundraise for the RUH Cancer Care Campaign or an RUH ward or department of their choice. We’re hoping that this year’s Trek to Cambodia will be our most successful yet! Our trek will start in the beautiful Siem Reap and take you through dazzling green rice paddies, jungles dotted with Buddhist temples and ruins. Trekkers will be immersed in ancient Khmer tradition, will discover the beauty of the sacred Kulen Mountain and have the opportunity to explore the jewel in Cambodia’s crown, Angor Wat” One in two people are now affected by cancer and everyday lives are changed by this disease. The Forever Friends Appeal’s RUH Cancer Care Campaign has now raised over £7.1 million towards its minimum £8.5 million target to help fund the build of a pioneering new Cancer Centre at the hospital.

This Cancer Centre will be a state of the art building, with every part designed around the needs of patients with different forms of cancer. It will transform care for patients and their families at the RUH. Emily continues: “Last year, our Overseas Trek saw 17 inspirational trekkers journey to Northern India. Our trekkers raised over £25,000 for the RUH Cancer Care Campaign and we’re hoping that this year’s trek to Cambodia will raise even more to help us reach our target!” If you have a passion for culture, a great sense of adventure and the desire to do something challenging to help The Forever Friends Appeal achieve its goal, sign up today to join their team. A Swim To Remember UPDATE by Dave Stevens

Following on from the last article I have kept up with the training and am now swimming between 10-20k a week, which will be going up the closer it gets to the off. I have continued to swim in the lake twice a week right through winter with temperatures dropping to 2.1 degrees. When it gets that cold you can't stay in too long, but I still managed 800 metres to a mile, I have attended two chilly dippers events at the lake in January and February run by Southwest Swim and Waterlands. I swam the 400 metres and 100 metres, it is against the clock and I managed to knock off nearly 40 seconds from my 100 metres in February, so I think I'm slowly getting fitter. I had some great news this week being voted as Southwest Swim Sponsored Swimmer of the Year. Southwest Swim are a coaching company working out of Swindon and we have now got lots of free coaching and advice from Jason Tate, who himself swam Windermere just last September so he knows exactly what I need to do, “it's great to have some proper support behind us and in his words let’s get you up the big bit of water”.

New Town Crier Office As many readers will have noticed, we have now officially moved into our new office in Wood Street, Calne. Thanks to everyone for their kind messages of support, and for bearing with us during the inevitable disruption caused by the move.

Brand new for 2016!

I have also decided to swim Weymouth Bay from the harbour to Bowleaze Cove as a small training event which we will film and upload to our Facebook. The reason is as a family we spent many wonderful holidays there and I feel close to my boy there so why not!! Quite a number of friends have expressed an interest in coming to the lake with me for a swim however no-one is interested ’till it warms up a bit , I can't for the life of me work out why ?? if you haven't looked us up on Facebook please do, as all the likes and shares are fantastic, @ A swim to remember. Also we have re-opened our just giving page www.justgiving. com/David-Stevens13/ if you want to sponsor me! I have said this is a Windermere attempt as I don't know if I will be fit enough for it but I'm going to give it a good try. On that note if you do log onto our Facebook page why not take a guess at my top post, the nearest person to guess the closest to my training miles will win £100 to their chosen charity, donated by my company DPS & Son Ltd.

Not just for old folk!

ENTION Lawn Green Bowling and it’s quite likely to conjure up an image of senior citizens, men in flat white caps, flannels and blazers and ladies in white straw trilby hats, multi pleated skirts topped off with blazers. That may well have been part of the picture when Calne Bowls Club first started back in 1914 although because ladies were not admitted to the club until much later it would only have been part of the picture.

by Allan Hewett

If you have ever fancied ‘having a go’ or perhaps just curious why not come along to the Bowling Green next to the Recreation Club on the Twenty Third and see what it’s all about. The club has sets of bowls in a variety of sizes suitable for anyone wanting to try their hand. For the Open Day the only equipment you will need to enjoy your first game of bowls is a pair of flat soled shoes or trainers.

Now 102 years on, of course, it’s a completely different picture, twenty first century Calne Bowls Club supports, equally, ladies and men’s membership. On April 16th as a prelude to the official opening of The Green for the 2016 Season, The Town Mayor will open the new ladies and gents changing rooms. It is hoped that with the much improved facility, which has been a joint venture initiative, that the club will be able to attract new members from a wider community. Calne Bowls Club are hosting an open day on April 23rd when they would like to be able to show you that Lawn green bowls isn’t just a sport for older folk but one suitable for all ages and abilities. A sport that can be played either as an individual or as a team player.

Indeed, the modern day game being played regionally, nationally and internationally attracts players from school age onwards. Should you not be able to make it to the Open Day but are interested to find out more you are welcome to come along to a Tuesday Night, Club Night. This is open to all members and starts on the first Tuesday in May and runs until the last Tuesday in August, it’s an informal evening providing an ideal opportunity to practice your game, play a friendly match and generally socialize. Sisters’ lives transformed by Cochlear Implants and Specialist Auditory Verbal Therapy Programme

W

ILTSHIRE residents Sade and Topaz have had lots to celebrate this year. The sisters, age 16 and 14, were both born deaf but thanks to astounding developments in modern hearing technology are currently studying for GCSE and A level exams and starting to think about university, just like other children their age. Sade and Topaz are both profoundly deaf, born to hearing parents with no experience or history of deafness. Mum Victoria says of realising that both her young daughters were deaf, “we were devastated, words cannot describe the feelings of heartbreak, we cried and cried and grieved for what we thought our girls had or should have.” As their hearing loss was so severe, neither would benefit fully from hearing aids and both were fitted with cochlear implants at around age 2. Thanks to their cochlear implants and a specialist programme at the charity Auditory VerbalUK, Sade and Topaz can now listen and talk without the need for visual cues or sign language. Their parents say that “they enjoy and respond to every aspect of a world full of sound”, allowing them to have the same opportunities in life as hearing children. “Both girls have achieved amazing results with their cochlear implants; they have beautiful voices and are happy confident girls. They both started mainstream school at 4 years old and joined reception class like any other child. … When people meet our girls now and we tell them that they have a hearing loss they do not believe us, they cannot believe it. … Our reality now contains no worries about Sade and Topaz’s speech and language. Our 34

nightmare has finally gone and our girls are flying.” On 25 February the sisters celebrated International Cochlear Implant Day with Auditory VerbalUK and deaf people worldwide who shared stories of having their lives transformed by cochlear implants. On 3 March for this year’s ‘Childhood Hearing Loss’ themed World Hearing Day they will be helping to raise awareness about early hearing loss and the options available for deaf children. Topaz wants to further this cause by becoming an Auditory Verbal Therapist herself, she says “who could be a better inspiration for deaf children and their families than a successful woman who speaks clearly and wears cochlear implants.” Speaking about the work of Auditory VerbalUK, CEO Anita Grover, who had successful cochlear implant surgery in 2006, says: “Sade and Topaz are showing just what’s possible for deaf children when they have early support and access to fantastic technology. Having lost my

hearing progressively from childhood, I have seen first-hand the barriers that deaf people can face an am determined that deaf children have the same opportunities in life as hearing children. Deaf children are still under achieving at school, at higher risk of isolation, bullying and social exclusion and have lower employment prospects. But approximately 80% of the babies and children who work with the fantastic team at Auditory VerbalUK achieve language on a par with hearing children after 3 years. Most attend mainstream schools. Our programme is helping them to get an equal start at school and to achieve their full potential in the hearing world.”

Auditory VerbalUK is an awardwinning charity founded in 2003 to raise expectations for deaf children and to provide access to Auditory Verbal Therapy in the UK. Find out more at: www.avuk.org and read about some of our graduates at www.avuk.org/stories.

Soda Bread A traditional teatime treat

inches / 5-8 cm thick. Cut a deep cross in the top of the loaf (cut almost all the way through but not quite) and stab lightly all over.

Add a couple of large handfuls of dried fruit to the mix. Raisins and sultanas, or chopped dates work very well.

Bake for 20-25 minutes until the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the base. Allow to cool on a wire rack for a few minutes and eat warm with butter.

Try a half-and-half mixture of plain and wholemeal flour and add a spoon of black treacle to the mix. It makes a denser, sweeter soda bread which is great with cheese.

Preheat the oven to 200C / Gas mark 6. Combine all the dry ingredients in a bowl, then add the liquid slowly while mixing to make a dough.

Thinned yoghurt or half milk to water works instead of buttermilk if you don’t have any.

Knead briefly, divide into two and shape into rough rounds. Pat to flatten until about 2-3

Experiment with flour mixtures. Spelt flour and rye flour make tasty additions.

VARIATIONS

Or using half plain and half wholemeal flour, add a couple of handfuls of chopped walnuts and a couple of tablespoons of honey. Try switching the buttermilk for beer (works best with wholemeal flour) The variations are endless.

Spring Break by Kate Duggan

S

PRING is the perfect time to explore a new area, and there are certainly plenty to tempt you on to the road.

Kids will love to explore the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall, with its outdoor sculptures, rope bridges and ‘jungle’. Or how about a trip to Escot in Devon, where they can run riot through the maze, see otters being fed, watch wild bird displays and play hide ‘n’ seek in the woods? Book into nearby Yellingham Farm B&B, or camp at Crealy Meadows Caravan and Camping Park, where you can also take advantage of the adventure park, with its huge indoor play area, sandpits and rides for all the family. A good day trip can feel like a mini-break in itself. National Trust properties are usually a pretty safe bet. Choose between castles, forts and other historic buildings, or just spend a few hours wandering through the parklands or gardens. Cliveden in Buckinghamshire is a good choice for garden lovers: its Italianate Long Garden has been planted with some 20,000 sweetsmelling hyacinths, while the Water Garden will be awash with cherry blossom, wisteria and magnolias. Or why not just pack a picnic and head off to the beach or woods? Check out Walking Britain for some inspiration. www.walkingbritain.co.uk If you fancy going a bit further afield, try Morzine in the French Alps. In the winter it is a popular skiing destination, but at this time of year it’s quieter. The scenery is still stunning though, and there’s certainly plenty to keep you busy. The mountain biking trails are among the best in the world, but there are also plenty of more leisurely sports to enjoy, including golf.

How about nabbing a last minute cruise deal? And if you crave the sun, Dubai is a good bet, with temperatures in April reaching 32°C. Wander around the street markets, from the Gold Souk, to Deira Fish Market, and then have a coffee in the Ramada Dubai hotel where you can admire one of the world’s tallest stained glass windows. You’re pretty spoiled for places to stay in the UAE, but the Jumeirah Dar Al Masyaf at Madinat Jumeirah is a great choice, as it’s one of the top rated hotels on Trip Advisor.

Corsham Walking Festival by Julia Tyte, Publicity

W

E’RE holding our second full Weekend Walking Festival on 17th-19th June and will be offering 17 walks of varying lengths, to suit all abilities, including a short accessible wheelchair friendly walk, (carers free).

We’ll be holding a Saturday evening Supper and Quiz at The Campus, to which all are invited, walkers and non-walkers. We’d love local clubs and groups to bring a team to our evening event and compete for “The Golden Boots” Award.

Of special interest to those in Chippenham is our new linear walk on Saturday, from Chippenham to the Pewsham Locks, along the Wilts and Berks Canal, then to Lacock and back via the Ladbrook to Corsham Campus.

We have our website www.corshamwalkingfestival. org.uk which will have all the walk details on it. Brochures available from the start of April at the Library & Tourist Information Centre, or download via the website where booking opens 4th April.

We’ll be using a number of experts to talk about specialist subjects en route, which proved so popular last year, as well as having our expert walk leaders to guide you. There’ll be walks covering Quarrying, Geology, Railways, Canals, Wildflowers, Singing, Children’s Free Treasure Hunt, “Walkies“ for dogs and a “Mindfulness” Walk; so there should be something for everyone.

See you in June, get those boots on and let’s hope it’s sunny!

Corsham WALKING FESTIVAL 17th -19th JUNE 2016 48

Many walks start from the new Springfield Campus, with free parking, though some start from locations around the area offering a wider range.

Health Matters

We Could Be Heroes

I

by Emmy Butcher

HAD been Practice Manager at Beversbrook Medical Centre for several years when my daughter, who must have been around seven years old at the time, asked me – ‘Mummy when do you stop practising and become a proper Manager?’ Aaaah the wisdom of children, it still makes me smile every time I think of her earnest face and how she didn’t seem all that convinced when I explained that I was the Manager of the Medical Practice, rather than pretending to be one until I had rehearsed enough to persuade them to let me have a go at the proper job. The role of the Practice Manager is all too often misunderstood and I have been called everything from ‘glorified secretary’ to ‘office manager’, both of which are true to some extent but don’t really do the job the justice it deserves. In today’s Primary Care, the Practice Manager role is somewhat equivalent to that of a Chief Executive, being responsible for driving the business forward strategically, managing staff and finances and making sure that everything runs smoothly. Many patients don’t realise that GP Practices are independent businesses, contracted to provide services for the NHS. GPs operate in Partnerships, similar to that of Solicitors and it is not uncommon these days to find Practice Managers are members of the practice partnership. I’m lucky enough to be a Partner here at Beversbrook and whilst this sometimes provides a few sleepless nights, it also brings me a lot of pleasure and pride in our little Surgery and what we have achieved over the years. In March I was genuinely surprised to hear that I had been nominated for a Towergate Care Award for Practice Manager of the Year and even more surprised to find out that I was shortlisted to the final three. I did have to check the date and make sure it wasn’t an early April Fool’s trick, but thankfully not. The Towergate Care Awards were launched to celebrate individuals who demonstrate outstanding excellence in care, shortlisting candidates from hundreds nominated throughout England and Wales. Ordinary people, going above and beyond to deliver the best in quality of care, were given a moment in the spotlight during a glitzy award ceremony, held in London’s beautiful Berkley Hotel and hosted by British comedy actress, Sally Phillips, she of Bridget Jones’ Diary and Miranda - ‘Bear with…..bear with’ fame. The awards paid homage to a broad network of individuals who truly make a difference to people’s 50

The Town Crier Magazine | APRIL 2016

lives every day and quite frankly I felt like a complete imposter amongst all the other amazing candidates for the various categories, which included Care Home Worker of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Creative Counselling Initiative of the Year. During the ceremony I was lucky enough to sit next to one of the judges, Towergate Marketing Director - Drew Wotherspoon, who told me how difficult it had been picking finalists. He explained that during the judging process, panel members were completely humbled and often emotionally overwhelmed reading the hundreds of applications put forward by nominees. He and his judging colleagues found it truly heart-warming and inspirational to see so much evidence of people going above and beyond, helping to improve the health and welfare of patients across the UK. Whilst I still struggle to count myself as worthy of being shortlisted as Practice Manager of the Year, I do feel that awards like this are an important way of saying thank you to those unsung heroes of the NHS. The social worker, GP or home carer who has gone that extra mile to improve your care and wellbeing or that of your loved one, is the unsung hero and cornerstone of our NHS. As a Nation of complainers, we very rarely give feedback unless it is when we are unhappy about a service we have received. All too often, we fail to say thank you or give recognition where it is deserved. We hear on the news all the time that the NHS is a demoralised workforce, this is a shame because the NHS would collapse without these amazing individuals, who should be celebrated and used as an example to inspire others. I didn’t win my category, a much more worthy Practice Manager from Yorkshire took home the award and quite right too! Just being nominated was enough of a pat on the back for me – Emmy Butcher, nearly Practice Manager of the Year has quite a ring to it - plus I got treated to a superb meal (with a nice chocolate pud) and a day trip to the big city. I even got to stand really close to Tilly from Miranda, which was Marvilisimous (Miranda fans) Plus…there’s always next year….. One of the best little spas in the UK Tucked away in a leafy lane in Sutton Benger is one of the best little spas in the UK. It’s official – Hazelwood Spa and Beauty, based in The Old Farmhouse in Seagry Road – was a finalist at the World Spa and Wellness Professional Beauty Awards 2016. Proprietor Sam Francome and her team attended the awards ceremony in London on 28th February. ‘Being a part of the awards as finalists was such a boost for us here. We were very proud to get this far,’ said Sam. ‘The recognition given within the industry as one of the best salons in the UK was humbling. With only five salon finalists we feel confident we are moving in the right direction. We enjoyed the whole experience and it was great to meet and celebrate with other salons at the event. My colleagues are incredibly supportive and deserve all praise for their working attitude towards Hazelwood’s success.’ Sam has come a long way from

the days when she started her beauty business. In the 1990s she began a mobile service, taking her treatments into the homes of busy mums in the Chippenham area while her children were at school. ‘It was the perfect solution for me,’ said Sam. ‘It meant that I could build up my business around my own young family.’ Hazelwood Spa and Beauty at the Old Farmhouse started with just one treatment room within the family home, and has grown up to the present day with Sam now employing three beauty specialists, Clare, Imogen and Laura, and a parttime receptionist, Linda. In the summer the business will move into a custom-built building next to the farmhouse. ‘We’re very excited about the move,’ said Sam. ‘There will more space for people to meet and relax. In addition to all of our tried and tested products, we’re looking to offer new, innovative treatments such as core

mentoring, and even creative writing classes. Our aim is to provide a completely holistic package that will nurture body, mind and soul.’ The success of Hazelwood comes of no surprise to its existing customers. The clientele has grown over the years through word of mouth, and many of Sam’s original customers still visit on a regular basis. Every visit to Hazelwood Spa is a treat, and Sam and her team ensure that you leave feeling pampered and rejuvenated. Get the haircut you want Make sure the stylist sees and touches your hair before they pick up the scissors. It is important for the stylist to see how your hair looks currently, how you style it now and to check out your hair’s growth patterns. If someone offers to shampoo before the stylist sees you, ask to talk with the stylist first. Use the right language Be specific about what you want. The best way is to talk in terms of problems. List the problems have with your hair. If it’s dry or fly-away or lank and doesn’t hold a style, let the stylist know. Tell them about previous colour or chemical problems. Bring in a hairstyle scrapbook

Part of the reason your hair looks so good when you leave the salon is because stylists use the right products. While you’re sitting in your chair ask about what they are using and why. Do they have any tips to help you recreate the styling when you get home?

Photographs are a terrific starting point. Take in images of styles and colours you love. But be prepared for some ideas to be shelved. Your dream hairstyle might not work with the hair you have and a good stylist won’t try to do the impossible. But they will use it as a tool to open a discussion on which aspects will work for you. Gardening

Spring has Sprung! by Rachel Leverton

DIGGING is really only something I do with ground that is being cultivated for the first time. Mostly I use a fork and work in fertiliser as I go along. I like to use an organic fertiliser and tend to go for poultry manure pellets. I sprinkle them round shrubs, roses and perennials. The application instructions will vary but generally it’s about three handfuls to the square metre. It’s magical stuff when lightly

forked in. It gives the plants a boost and builds up the levels of beneficial soil bacteria. Now is the time I dig up my overcrowded border plants and split them into smaller clumps. These can be used to plug the gaps elsewhere in my garden, or given to friends to help plug the gaps in theirs! Make sure you use a bit of fertiliser and water them in if the ground is dry.

I spread a good 3 inch / 8cm layer of mulch around my border, between the plants. Choose from well-rotted manure or garden compost, chipped bark or cocoa shells. This seals in moisture and keeps the weeds down, essential at this time of year when they start growing like...well...weeds! If you haven’t already done so give your roses a prune taking care to remove any dead or diseased stems completely.

HOW TO . . . plant a container-grown shrub Soak the compost for an hour before planting. Make sure the rootball of the shrub is sufficiently moist. Check to shrub is suitable for the site. Dig a hole that is larger than the rootball. Work well-rotted garden-compost or planting mixture into the bottom of

56

The Town Crier Magazine | APRIL 2016

the hole and mix it with the soil you removed when you dug the hole. Plant the shrub so that the top of the rootball is just fractionally below the finished soil level. Firm the earth around with your boot. Water the plant in and spread an organic mulch on top.

Motoring Mayhem

Fully Charged! ‘R’ and I recently attended a Local Plan Consultation workshop at Derry Hill Hall. One of the questions in the workshop was whether the local authority should install electric vehicle charging points in Calne. Many people thought it was probably a waste of money but I pointed out that the motor trade seems to think that by 2020 electric vehicles will make up 7% of the cars on the road. This is only going to inexorably increase as manufacturers continue to fail to get internal combustion engines to meet emission targets and oil supplies dwindle. All modern technology has a slow start but ends up being dominant, computers replacing typewriters, digital cameras and video instead of film to quote but a few. I doubt there is a single element of our lives that has not been changed by the march of technology. At the moment we have very few customers with electric or hybrid vehicles although I booked an all electric Nissan Leaf for MOT next week. That will be the interesting as we have only had hybrids up to now. Over the last 2 months as part of my business I have had to drive 2 Toyota Prius hybrids to Avonmouth. I found it very odd to pull away from rest in total silence, with the engine not firing up until I had travelled a couple of miles. On the digital dash there are options

to choose whether you see average fuel consumption over the last 5 minutes or a power distribution display to tell you if you are running under battery or engine power. I was quite interested in this as road noise prevents you from hearing if the engine is running. Overall the car archived about 50 mpg, not bad for a 1700 cc petrol engine but not wonderful; many ordinarily powered cars are just as economical without the expense and complexity of a hybrid. The only place I can see that electric power scores is in slow moving town driving as the engine cuts out and produces no pollution; a major benefit on our congested roads. After having driven the Prius I have to say that I am not impressed. It is a particularly ugly car and the driving experience is nothing to write home about. OK it is reasonably economical but whether it is worth paying the extra for the electric element of it I’m not sure. Great I suppose if you have a conscience about gassing everyone when you are stuck in traffic but otherwise I think I will stick to petrol power (you all know what I think about diesel). Manufacturers have to start somewhere on the development of new technology and I think the current crop of hybrids are that start. The next stage is the electric car with a back up engine to recharge the battery on a long trip and there are 1 or 2 of

those about already, such as the Vauxhall Ampera and the BMW i3. These cars are driven solely by electric motors and all the petrol engine does is act as a generator to recharge the battery packs. Under normal conditions, after an overnight charge, the car should be capable of the daily commute without the engine ever starting. For the moment I think that the electric powered car with range extender engine will be power source of the conceivable future, until someone develops a battery that will give at least 300 miles on a charge. I have thought that hydrogen powered electric cars might be the future but at the moment the technology to make it work commercially is too complex and expensive. However as with all technology it seems that there is almost no limit to what can be developed or invented. Personally I wouldn’t have a problem with an electric car as long as it had a range extender engine for those longer journeys and manufacturers start to produce one at a reasonable price and isn’t pig ugly. At the moment the BMW i3 would be my choice. It is available as all electric with a range of up to 100 miles or with range extender engine increasing that indefinitely. The cost is a bit steep at over 31K and it is only about the size of a Fiesta but it is a good start down the electric route if you can afford it. I have no doubt that manufacturers will develop more and more models of the range extender type and the cost is likely to fall as development costs are recovered. The writing is on the wall for the internal combustion engine as a main power source; the future is electric. by Colin Viner

O

Easter Boxed up

ne evening after dinner, a five-year-old son noticed that his mother had gone out and he asked, “Where did mummy go?” In answer to his questions, he was told , “Mummy is at a Tupperware party.” Puzzled, he asked, “What’s a Tupperware party, Dad?” “Well, son,” he said, “at a Tupperware party, a bunch of ladies sit around and sell plastic bowls to each other.” The little boy started to laugh. “Come on, Dad,” he said. “What is it really?” Lots of us like Tupperware; we can keep everything neat and tidy. I’ve discovered that all my half empty packets of rice or red lentils can have their own box. It’s bliss. Cupboards all clean and tidy too. An honest understanding of God though is rarely so straight forward. We expect the message to be packaged and sorted but the truth is things can be a little messy. It’s wise to find space in our lives to ask the big questions, work them through, and keep on wrestling with them. One of my boys asked me a question recently, he said, “how big does our faith have to be?” I suggested as small as a mustard seed to begin with, but like our muscles, our faith can grow with exercise. His response: “so going to church is like going to the gym”. I suppose he was right, spiritually speaking. If we don’t stretch faith, work at it, enjoy it, tease it out, it won’t grow. (I could have made the British Olympic squad, if only I had some talent and had done some training) The questions that were being asked on Easter morning were revealing. First the angels, and then Jesus Himself – “Mary, why are you weeping?” You see, Mary had gone to do some spiritual tidying up, taking some spices to honour Jesus’ earthly remains. Noticing that the stone had been rolled away, Mary assumed that somebody had stolen Jesus’ body. It was a wrong assumption, but she’d packed it away in her post-crucifixion traumatic Tupperware box.

64

The Town Crier Magazine | APRIL MARCH 2016 2016

You can imagine her thinking – “Oh come on God, as if Friday weren’t bad enough. As if it wasn’t enough to see Jesus laughed at, beaten up and killed, now someone has heaped insult upon injury and taken his body away. They can’t even leave him in peace now he is dead” I guess we’ve all got a tendency to do the same. We make assumptions or perhaps we rant at God and say how life is unfair. Thankfully, God doesn’t always answer back. In Mary’s case though, He did. “Mary” and you can imagine Mary Magdalene’s face changing. From tears and confusion to a growing realization that the Tupperware boxes of assumptions are not quite as they should be. “Rabboni”, she replies. He’s alive. Jesus had been dead, but you just can’t box him in. The tomb was sealed, just like one of those airtight Tupperware boxes you get with the little flaps on the side. But the love of God cannot be contained and the tomb burst open. The little box of a room in the Temple, called the Holy of Holies, cut off from the rest of the world by a heavy curtain, was also opened to all as the curtain was found ripped in two. The fearful, hiding disciples who had boxed themselves away, now learn the news that will inspire them to go out to all four corners of their world. Jesus is risen. You cannot contain Him. We can’t box him up and put him away. God is involved in our lives. Our ideas and assumptions about Him cannot be neatly packaged. Jesus is alive and he’ll keep on surprising us. Jesus will keep on nagging away at us if we try to shut him out and He’ll keep on challenging us to re-assess our lives. Let me give you a picture: two plastic boxes. One is closed; it represents the secular world view. It is closed to the idea of God. The second box is open; it represents the Christian understanding, that we are willing to let God in. Books

A Good Read The Lie

‘Beast Quest’ series. It follows a somewhat formulaic construction but bear with me.

..............................................................................................

In this particular story (the third book in a series which numbers over 100) returns to the mythical kingdom of Avantia where an evil spell has been cast by Malvel the Dark Wizard on six beasts. An ancient prophecy tells of a young boy, an unlikely hero, who will rise up and defeat the beasts, freeing Avantia from the threat it faces.

by C L Taylor

Jane Hughes is 30, lives in rural Wales with her boyfriend, and works for a local animal sanctuary. Reliable and dependable she seems to have a perfect life. Until one day a letter arrives at work and suddenly the secret she has been hiding for the last 5 years threatens everything. Jane Hughes does not exist. This is a gripping thriller. It’s a little slow to get going, but as it gathers pace it is almost guaranteed you will not want to put it down. Taylor manages to capture in great detail the excitement of a holiday with your friends to exotic places where time stands still and you have the freedom to relax: the novelty of travelling without your parents. In this case Emma and her friends travel to Nepal to a yoga and meditation retreat: a girlie trip to help one of them get over a break-up. But the idyll is soon revealed to be anything but, and before the end of the novel two of the party will be dead. Exactly how and why is ‘the lie’ of the title. Or is it? Is ‘the lie’ instead referring to the need to convince ourselves that life is good, and normal? Emma is living ‘the lie’, through her assumed identity of Jane. No one would ever guess what had happened to her which means the letter can only have come from one person.

Beast Quest: Arcta the mountain giant by Adam Blade

.......................................................................................... This is a short novel, aimed at readers aged 7 and upwards. It belongs to the hugely successful

66

The Town Crier Magazine | APRIL MARCH 2016 2016

Has that hero been found? A good wizard Aduro believes so, and he is a boy called Tom. And so Tom is sent out to try to destroy the beasts. We meet him at the start of this book, having already destroyed Ferno the Fire Dragon and Sepron the Sea Serpent, as he continues on his travels with his horse, Storm. He is joined by his best friend Elenna and her wolf, Silver. As the story opens a strange rock avalanche breaks up a convoy of caravans. Tom encounters Jack, a young child out with his father who is a trader and is told that the avalanche was not cause by any natural source, but by a Giant who lives in the mountain. Can Tom and Elenna complete their quest or will Avantia remain doomed and cursed? I recommend this novel as it only 112 pages long, and is perfect for encouraging reluctant readers, (it is aimed particularly at boys) to read. The setting is typical of older boys’ books, with set pieces which will be familiar to readers of Tolkien and other fantasy adventure stories. Short chapters and a certain poetic style of language make this an easy read for young children. It’s a great introduction to this extensive genre of novels. So if you have a boy who could be described as a ‘reluctant reader’ then this could be the perfect book series for him.

Jo Deacon

Men and their Menopause ! For years men drive women mad every month. Temper fits, tantrums, arguments at the slightest thing, and if we retaliate, they simply smirk and knowingly smile - “Is it your time of the month darling?” This unfair jibing goes on for years, interspersed with the unexpected box of chocolates, bunch of flowers, and even the odd CD they knew we wanted, but just when you think it’s safe to stick your head above the parapet and relax for a while, something crosses what they laughingly call their “mind”, and off they go again, ranting and raving about any little thing that takes root in their grey matter. I leave the room when the news comes on - it’s less wearing on the ears - and nerves! Just when I’d more or less trained him into being a little bit more tolerant about the delicate subject of women’s hormones, I reached the age where they cease! Wouldn’t you know it? All those years of bloody hard work, arguing, explaining, crying into my soggy pillow when he’d been particularly bloody-minded and downright evil, and it all comes to a sudden stop! (No, not his moods, the beastly monthly hormonal horrors!) And does he notice - not a bit! For a few years, a somewhat tentative peace settled over the house, and I began to think perhaps I’d been a bit hard on him. After all, I’m not the easiest woman to live with at the best of times, but I’m not the worst either. (My younger sister changed her husband everytime she got fed up of her mild mannered husbands refusal to argue when she was in the mood for a right old ding-dong - she’d had five or six at the last count!) 68

The Town Crier Magazine | APRIL 2016

Anyway, apart from the occasional splutter or mutter at something in the paper or on the TV, the house was pretty quiet. I began to enjoy attending to my daily chores, meeting friends for a coffee when doing the shopping in town, watching the freshly laundered clothes blowing on the line, singing along with my CD’s and visiting the shops, even trying my hand at some gardening. All in all, life was pretty good. Then Fred retired! O God! Not only did he constantly interfere with everything I had thus far enjoyed doing, but worse still- he wanted to join in! It wasn’t enough to get under my feet constantly, he seemed to question everything I did. It got to the point where I felt I had to explain everything I did - and why! Why did I always do the laundry on different days instead of the same day each week? Why did I need to go to town shopping more than twice a week! (To escape is the obvious answer to that one!) If he saw me take a painkiller WHY did I have a headache????? Etc! Etc! Et bloody cetra! He was bored. So what did he decide to do to stave off the boredom, (not to mention to possibility of me murdering him in his sleep!) He decided he would have HIS male menopause. After all, I’d had mine, so fair’s fair, why shouldn’t he have his turn now? OK! Get on with it then. But I should’ve known better than to expect it to be anything as “tame” as mine had been. He decided he would have a go at clearing out the attic. An innocent enough statement you might think. Not on your Nellie!

Bags of precious cards and letters from years gone by were carelessly chucked in the recycling box. Many of them holding special memories from friends and relatives sadly now no longer living. Paintings done by the kids when they were at infant school went the same way. Ornaments I had treasured were consigned to the charity shops, clothes, cushions, curtains and toys all went out under the ruthless rule of “king Frederick Tudor the eighth”. Many an argument ensued over vinyl records, CD’s and beautiful books that once his lordship had read, he would never read again! Then he went a step too far - he poked his nose into my “studio” and had the bloody nerve to start telling me what I should get rid of and what I should put neatly away!!! All my painting paraphernalia, sketch books and canvases, box upon box of jewellery items I had bought over the years and made earrings from for charity. I was speechless with rage. I told him in very colourful Anglo Saxon language to stay the hell away from my room or face very dire consequences. I think he finally got the message! The one question I would love an answer to is simply this - why do most retired men take up a none destructive hobby when they retire, like gardening or painting, while others seem to suffer a complete brainstorm and turn into something like a Yeti with a shave? We’ve been married 53 years this June, and though I love him dearly, I can’t help but reminding him now and then that the usual sentence for murder is only 12 years!!! Watch out for that loose stair carpet darling! ........ Joanne Deacon @ 2016 ..........
