On Friday 26 May, 18 members of Wiltshire business, V12 Footwear, hiked an impressive 13 miles to raise funds for Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s new airbase. At all ages and fitness levels; the five hour hike took them from their headquarters in Chippenham to the Air Ambulance’s new airbase site in Semington, through beautiful but very hot Wiltshire countryside. To make the hike more corporate, each and every member of the team wore V12 safety boots – really putting their comfort to the test. Tom Turner from V12 Footwear commented “Wiltshire Air Ambulance is a charity that is very close to the hearts of V12 staff for personal reasons, but also because it is a fantastic resource for the county’s residents and visitors. “We have the greatest respect for every single member of staff from the pilots and paramedics to those managing the operations, fundraising and marketing from the ground. Nobody knows if or when the Wiltshire Air Ambulance might affect their lives, but it is a great comfort to know that they are there and can get to emergencies quickly. “As well as becoming a member of the Wiltshire Air Ambulance 100 Club we have promised to keep WAA staff booted for a lifetime.” On arriving in Semington, the V12 hikers were greeted by Wiltshire Air Ambulance mascot, Wilber the Bear, and proceeded to have a tour around the site by the Rigg Site Manager. V12 are thrilled to report that they have so far raised £2,030 for the charity, with donations still pouring in.

Tim said “Do join us and hear familiar classical favourites by Beethoven, Mussorgsky and Wagner, made well-known in films such as the ‘King’s Speech’, ‘Dracula’ and ‘Apocalypse Now’. There’s the epic and dramatic imagery in these pieces as well as the softer, more reflective, moments from film. In our second half, remind yourself of the great heroic film soundtracks for ‘Forest Gump’, ‘Gladiator’ and ‘Star Wars’. Can paying dividends reduce your Company’s tax bill? No it can’t. A Company pays Corporation Tax on its profits before dividends are paid out. Consequently, shareholders are treated as having already paid some tax on their dividends but they do have 7.5% dividend tax to pay (on dividends above £5,000) and shareholders who pay Higher Rate Tax will have 32.5% tax to pay on their dividends. One big advantage of paying dividends is that compared to salaries you will save on National Insurance. For instance, a bonus paid through salary will suffer Employer’s NI of 13.8% (plus any PAYE and Employees NI due), while there is no NI to pay on a Dividend. This is a major reason for many Company owners choosing to pay themselves small salaries and then receive the bulk of their ‘pay’ as Dividends

Bowood to host two-night music extravaganza Classic Ibiza and The Great British Prom to visit one of Wiltshire’s best loved stately homes on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th August 2017. The following evening, The National Symphony Orchestra will begin The Great British Prom with the National Anthem. This will then be followed by a representation of some truly rousing English classics including the “Dambusters” March, “I Vow to Thee My Country” and “The Archers” theme tune! We will then move to the Emerald Isle, from where the orchestra will play “Danny Boy”, “Irish Washerwoman Encore” & “Toss the Feather”.
Bowood House & Gardens will be hosting two not-to-be-missed nights of live classical music next summer that cater for very different tastes. On Saturday 5th August, revellers will be able to witness the Urban Soul Orchestra (USO) and DJ Goldierocks bring some of the biggest dance tracks from the last 20 years to life. On Sunday 6th August, The National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by world-famous Anthony Inglis, will perform The Great British Prom, a veritable feast of iconic music from all corners of the UK. USO will start Classic Ibiza with a fabulous “chill-out” set featuring some of the most iconic Ibiza tracks including, Nightmare on Wax’s “Les Nuits”, Massive Attack’s “Teardrop”, Groove Armada’s “At the River” and William Orbit’s version of “Barber’s Adagio for Strings”. 26
The Town Crier Magazine | JULY 2017
During the interval, Goldierocks will take over the stage and fill the Bowood evening air with her creative mix of top Ibiza tunes. As the sun goes down, the Urban Soul Orchestra returns with vocalists that ooze talent and charisma. Jina Burrows, Roo Savill and Maxamillion Barnes-Davy, will bring their own flavour of Ibiza as they join Goldierocks on stage for the second half of the concert; this is when the party really starts! Tracks will take the audience on a white island journey through hugely popular club anthems including Fat Boy Slim’s “Right Here, Right Now”, Faithless’ “Insomnia”, Chase and Status’ “Blind Faith” and Swedish House Mafia’s “Don’t You Worry Child”.
The orchestra will then continue to Wales where the Classical Brit Award winning, Welsh male vocal group “Only Men Aloud” will bring their breath-taking sound to the Bowood audience, in front of the House; they will be singing rugby favourite “Bread of Heaven” and other Welsh classics. Then to music from the Scottish Highlands, which will be performed by The Band of the Home Counties Pipes and Drums. Scottish greats including “Skye Boat Song”, “Scotland the Brave” and “Flower of Scotland”. The second half will see the National Symphony Orchestra, perform all the Proms favourites including “Rule Britannia”, “Land of Hope & Glory” and British anthem “Jerusalem”. As well as having FREE parking (for both coaches and cars), guests can bring their picnics and champagne, wave their flags, sing along and soak up the atmosphere with friends in the outstanding Bowood setting, surrounded by Capability Brown’s 2,000 acre parkland. The evening will conclude with a stunning fireworks finale over the lake, choreographed to the music. REME MUSEUM MOD Lyneham
The REME Museum is now open to the public. Museum Director Major Richard (Rick) Henderson has overseen the Museum’s move to its new home in Lyneham. Since 2015 Major Rick and his team have been working to create a Museum that tells the story of this unique Corps. “We want to tell the story of REME – why it was created, how it evolved, what makes it special. The fact that our different trade groups are in every unit of the British Army and

serve worldwide, that wherever the British Army is deployed on operations REME are there, that makes us more unique and special. “Beyond that it’s about the individuals, the character and achievements of what those individuals have done, whether that’s the gallantry award recipients or in the success in the engineering environment or winning gold at the Olympics.
“A 21st century military museum” “It’s not just about the big equipment such as a helicopter or the 62 tonne CRARRV, but the individual stories – Ivan Hirst
saving Volkswagen, Wally Harris showing his initiative and picking up the Browning and getting the Military Medal, or Roy Homard completing two Polar expeditions. “We’ve tried to base the displays around the personal stories. In fact there’s a personal quote on nearly every panel, in the words of the men and women who have served in REME. “The message we are trying to get through is that this is a Corps for highly talented individuals, collectively impressive in their achievements in service, education, sport – whatever they do they will strive for success.” “It’s important that the Museum is part of the community. Obviously a continued overleaf

REME MUSEUM lot of the visitors will be local and also we have museum volunteers, many of who will come from the local community. Everyone seems genuinely enthusiastic about us being here.” What can visitors expect from the Museum? “I hope everyone will enjoy it because a lot of thought and planning has gone into making it not only a family-friendly place, but hopefully a place where there is something for everybody. “There is plenty to participate in. We’ve tried to make it an immersive, interactive experience. “Yes, there’s factual and historical elements, but we’ve tried to add a wow factor. For example, we have a huge curved screen where visitors can try their hand at a recovery task using a simulator of the latest and largest wheeled

recovery vehicle. We have the impressive visuals displays: a helicopter hanging from the ceiling, large and small tracked and wheeled vehicles, a fantastic weapons collection, medals, videos and interactive machines, stories and superb graphics covering the history of REME. “There’s a little bit of everything and we’ve tried to ensure the information on display in the panels has been done at a level that everyone connects with – it’s not just geeky stuff for engineering enthusiasts. “I’ve surrounded myself with museum professionals, like Jennifer (Allison) the Curator, people who have years of proper museum experience, and we also worked in partnership with a professional museum exhibition design company. “We want people to come away understanding what REME stands
for and what REME does. But we want them to enjoy their visit on the day, so they come away thinking ‘I loved having a go on that!’, or ‘wasn’t that display impressive?’ “We’ve tried make it a modern visitor experience moving away from the old style military museum – it’s very much a 21st century military museum. “We want it be something everyone will understand. Most importantly they can see that the men and women of REME are soldiers; highly intelligent and trained individuals who keep the British Army moving and operational. Individuals who often do their job in dangerous and hostile environments. Hopefully they get to connect with them and gain a bit of respect for how these people do their jobs.” www.rememuseum.org.uk

“Nothing compares to the simple pleasures of a bike ride.” (John F Kennedy)
If you are one of the 83% of people who acknowledge the importance of churches for our communities and national heritage, why not join Ride+Stride this year on Saturday 9th September? You don’t have to be supremely athletic to participate: plan a route appropriate to your energy level that takes you to a few churches, have a nice day out with family or friends, and raise some money for your local church and for the Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust, to enable it to continue offering grants to churches in need of repair.

In 2016 £53,000 was raised by enthusiastic participants with ages ranging from 4 to 85. The more energetic covered over 100 miles and 40 churches, but those who walked from their own church to a neighbouring one made an equally valuable contribution. Wiltshire is an ideal county for Riding or Striding. In large towns like Salisbury, Swindon, Chippenham or Trowbridge you can visit several churches in a short space of time; or you can opt for tranquil side-roads that take you through beautiful countryside to picturesque villages.

A Hung Parliament and what it means for social care? We asked Andrew Douglas, Partner at Awdry Bailey & Douglas Solicitors who specialises in elderly care, for his views on this issue. THE DECISION TO HOLD A SNAP ELECTION? Clearly the decision to hold a snap election was not because of the on going crisis in the elderly care system which is caused by too much demand and too little funding. THE ISSUES IN SOCIAL CARE? A long list could be compiled. These include self funders paying 43% more for the same care bed as compared with somebody funded by a Local Council. The quality of care failing the “Mum test”. The minimum wage in the sector going up, but some cash starved councils only paying the equivalent of £2.25 per hour. Care homes charging for rooms after a resident’s death, not to mention a fear of complaining in case care homes serve notices to quit on residents. The list could go on. DOES A NEW GOVERNMENT OF WHATEVER COLOUR HAVE AN ELDERLY CARE AGENDA? The answer is yes. Each of the main three parties has a different solution: The Conservatives say that you must pay for your social care from your assets to include your house until you having only £100,000 remaining.

This is subject to a CAP on the maximum anybody should pay for their care. The amount of the CAP is unknown. The Labour party propose that £8bn is put into social care over the next five years and that a National Care service be set up whilst the Liberal Democrats propose a 1p increase on income tax, with the money raised being applied to both the NHS and social care. WHAT NEXT AS A RESULT OF A HUNG PARLIAMENT? The issue of social care reform is now likely to be placed into the too difficult box meaning that none of the manifesto proposals will get implemented. That said the Green Paper proposed by the previous Conservative administration may well be produced but because of lack of consensus and like the previous 21 Green and White papers over the last 20 years it will be kicked into the long grass. WHAT IS BEST TO DO? Understand the existing rules under The Care Act 2014 and proceed accordingly. Waiting or doing nothing in relation to social care is not the best option. This approach, with this issue,
only results in people not being organised and their care costing more. LOCAL BUSINESS
Businesses challenged to turn £50 into £500 for Airbase Appeal BUSINESSES wishing to raise funds for Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s new airbase at Semington, near Melksham, are being challenged to use their entrepreneurial skills to transform £50 into £500. Wiltshire Air Ambulance is launching the 500 Corporate Challenge and is looking for 50 businesses to take part. The challenge runs for five months from June to 31 October 2017. Each business which signs up will be given £50 to start their fundraising and must raise a minimum of £500 for the charity’s Airbase Appeal. If 50 companies achieved this it would raise a total of £25,000 towards the building and equipping of the new airbase at Outmarsh Farm, Semington. Chippenham Motor Company is proudly sponsoring the 500 Corporate Challenge and has generously donated the challenge fund of £2,500. Adam Bailey, Managing Director of Chippenham Motor Company, said: “Chippenham Motor Company believe Wiltshire Air Ambulance is a vital part of the fabric of the emergency services and absolutely vital to the Wiltshire community. The new airbase is fundamental to the future of the air ambulance service and the protection of everyone, whether they be a visitor or resident of the county. “Throughout the year we will be assisting the charity to raise vital funds to keep Wiltshire Air Ambulance
flying and the 500 Corporate Challenge is the cornerstone of our fundraising for the year. “The concept of providing the necessary funding to raise what we all hope will be at least £25,000 from small to medium sized businesses was very appealing to Chippenham Motor Company. This amount of funding would be a huge boost to the Airbase Appeal target of £1.25 million.” David Philpott, Chief Executive of Wiltshire Air Ambulance, said: “We’d like to thank Chippenham Motor Company for their generous sponsorship of our 500 Corporate Challenge. They are providing the starter funding of £50 for each of the 50 companies who take part in the challenge. “The 500 Corporate Challenge is a fun way for businesses to use teamwork, skills and creative flair to make a real difference in your local community and be part of a special legacy by raising funds for our Airbase Appeal. “It’s up to you to think of innovative ways to turn the initial £50 into £500, provided it is safe and legal. It could include car rallies, bake offs, family fun days or black tie dinners. The challenge runs for five months so if you’d like to take part please get in touch with us.” For more information about the 500 Corporate Challenge go to www.wiltshireairbaseappeal.co.uk/ support-our-appeal/500-corporate-challenge/ or email 500challenge@wiltshireairambulance.co.uk

Chippenham Businesses get the perfect 10 for customer service In the words of an ancient Chinese proverb “A man without a smiling face must not open a shop.” So in Chippenham we must have many smiling faces after scoring an average of 82.7% for customer service! In February 2017, 90 businesses were visited by a mystery shopper from the nationally renowned StoreCheckers and 10 of those businesses scored a perfect 100% for their customer service. The mystery shopper campaign has seen Amare
Bridalwear, BCH Camping, Buckles, Clever Minds, Edward and Alan, Jollye’s Petfood Superstore, Lightways, Lilies Tea Room, Mader Duffill and Taste of the Caribbean receive recognition for achieving the Platinum Standard for customer service. Matthew Harvey, Manager of Lightways (photo left) and recipient of a Platinum Award said “We were absolutely thrilled with the award we received and it’s great to have recognition of the hard work and service we put in at Lightways – we always try to go a step above as an independent retailer in Chippenham. We were chuffed to bits!” Across Chippenham, 74 businesses received either a Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze Award for their achievements. Simon Philpott, Manager of Chippenham Connected who commissioned the activity and established the awards affirmed, “Once again the myth that Chippenham is not a good place to shop is dispelled; we all want shopping to be a pleasurable and positive experience and with such a high standard of Customer Service in our town one can be assured that shoppers are getting the best.” The Chippenham Customer Service awards will be an annual event, supported by Chippenham Connected and carried out by Store Checkers UK. In 2018 the survey will be extended to include even more businesses.

Looking Out For Sight – One Year Later Wiltshire Sight’s innovative Looking out for Sight project as reached the end of its first year. In that time good quality, high impact training has been delivered across the South West for care home staff. The service aims to increase care workers knowledge and overall understanding of sight loss so they can better care for visually impaired people.
The Looking out for Sight team would like to thank the organisations who have supported the project over the last 12 months, this includes Dorset Blind Association, Forest Sensory Services, Plymouth Guild, Somerset Sight, Southampton Sight and Thomas Pocklington Trust for funding the training and making the project possible.
This project is the first of its kind and has reached over 33 care homes, 14 care agencies and trained a total 405 care workers. This has resulted in 1,049 visually impaired service users benefiting from the training.
Melissa Sansum, Project Coordinator said: “Looking out for Sight has been an amazing project to work on. It is shocking to think of the high number of individuals who have sight loss yet the people who care for them do not have appropriate training. This should be mandatory and the responses we continue to receive - everyone agreeing how valuable the training is - support this viewpoint. It is wonderful to see the impact that it is having on individuals, improving their independence, emotional wellbeing and general daily life. The next twelve months will see LO4S continuing its work with care professionals and delivering the training to sight societies on a national scale who will then disseminate it to local care workers. I’m looking forward to the project’s second year and the excitement it will bring.”
Surprisingly, despite 50% of residents being affected by sight loss, 77% care workers in care homes and 67% care workers in domiciliary care agencies had not received visual impairment awareness training before. After the training, 100% of care workers agreed that it was a valuable use of their time and would recommend it to other care homes and agencies. 44% of the Looking out for Sight Ambassadors who have delivered the training were sight impaired. They have developed valuable work and life skills through their role as trainers.
Wiltshire Sight receive Global’s make some noise funding Wiltshire Sight is delighted to have been selected as one of this year’s beneficiaries of Global’s Make Some Noise – just one of over 30 charities they will be supporting across the UK. Capital, LBC, Classic FM, Smooth, Radio X, Capital XTRA and Gold – to raise money give a voice to small projects across the UK, supporting youngsters and their families living with illness, disability or lack of opportunity. They also run some masterclasses covering marketing, media and digital skills to help with building sustainability. Emma Bradley, director of Global’s Make Some Noise said: “Global’s Make Some Noise is all about shining the spotlight on small charities across the UK. They can often get overlooked, but we’re in the fantastic position to be able to raise money and awareness about their brilliant work through Global’s much-loved brands. We’re thrilled to be able to support Wiltshire Sight and look forward to making lots of noise for them this year.” 38

Brave attempt in Malmesbury to recreate historic 1881 Hot Air Balloon Launch with Sir David Hempleman-Adams
T
HE Eclipse Balloon event took place in Malmesbury on Sunday 21st May, and brought crowds to Cross Hayes to witness the attempt to recreate the famous 1881 flight by well-known Victorian explorer and Malmesbury MP, Walter Powell (photo inset). The unique event commemorated his flight from the very same spot, 136 years prior and is part of Athelstan Museum’s appeal to restore the Moravian Church – a community project to benefit the whole town.
There’s still time to donate to the restoration of the Moravian Church. There was a fantastic atmosphere in the build up to the launch, with lift off imminent the wind prevented the balloon from getting airborne safely, however the Moravian Church appeal will benefit from the generous donations made on the day. David Hempleman-Adams expressed his own disappointment but hoped that a good amount had been raised and that the community had enjoyed the event.
Angela Sykes, one of the event organisers comments: “Every penny raised at this fantastic event will go towards the restoration of the Moravian Church. What has been an eyesore in the town for two decades will soon become a great space for the community and the expanding work of the museum. It will be something we can all be really proud of.”

CHILDREN
Summer Concerts Just add children!
SUMMER concerts for families have never been more popular. Whether your tastes extend to the classics, jazz, pop or folk there will be an outdoor event to suit your family. Most young children will not mind which genre you choose. What they’ll love is the idea of a leisurely picnic, a chance to run around outside and possibly sideshows like jugglers, magicians and face painters. If you’re a summer concert virgin and you’re not sure how your offspring will behave, try a free concert in a local park first off. You will feel more relaxed and they can clap and sing along without you worrying that their antics might disturb other people. But even larger, more formal concerts tend to be rather informal. It’s probably best that your kids are versed in basic etiquette like not running through other people’s
48
The Town Crier Magazine | JULY 2017
Tips for Outdoor Concerts Choose to sit further back from the stage than you would if you were alone. Dedicated concert goers and those without children tend to sit near the front and they might not take kindly to boisterous youngsters. Sitting further back gives you all more room to stretch out and wander around. Take small amounts of lots of different foods. Variety will keep them interested. Take folding chairs, sunscreen, hats, insect repellent or citronella candles and lots of rugs. Comfort is important, especially as the sun disappears. A flask of hot chocolate is a winner when the evening air takes on a chill. Some glowsticks or lanterns will make the event extra special.
picnic areas and not throwing food or scrapping with siblings, but with a dose of general good manners normal lively behaviour is well tolerated at such events. Most concerts tend to take place in large fields anyway so there’s plenty of room for running around and even outdoor games such as frisbees and football, providing they’re played well away from the main crowd. Evening concerts are really exciting for children. Being allowed to stay up past normal bedtime is always a thrill and as night falls and people light candles and lanterns the scene becomes magical. Also many evening concerts have a firework finale. Then there’s the excitement of finding your car in the dark with your torch. What more could a child want?

TABLE TALK

The Pear Tree at Purton We dropped in for Afternoon Tea . . . on a very hot day in June!
What happens on arrival? Guests are greeted at reception and shown either to the lounge or the library and from the start given a very personal service. We were shown to the library, which boasts a fireplace which dates back to 1430 and must be the focal point of the room in the winter. However in the summer, the library looks out on to the garden with a lavender walk way down to the wider gardens. Dotted with butterflies, bees and birds, it’s the perfect backdrop for Afternoon Tea with friends.
Introduction In summer, going out for a three course meal or a long lunch to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or simply to enjoy a treat, can seem too much on sunny days. A wonderful alternative is a special Afternoon Tea and The Pear Tree at Purton offers this service at £16 a head. Where is The Pear Tree? The hotel & restaurant is situated at Church End, Purton, North Wiltshire and is just outside the centre of the village. The entrance is picked out by whitewashed stones. There is ample free parking on site and the hotel sits on the edge of beautiful gardens and fields which stretch back some considerable distance. 50
The Town Crier Magazine | JULY 2017
From the gardens, guests can see the local church, the local cricket club as well as wander the gardens at their leisure. The hotel is a ten minute drive from J16 of the M4 and a mere five miles from Swindon which has fantastic rail links to Bath, Bristol, London and Oxford. It is also a stone’s throw from the main road into Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds.
The Experience Throw away any notion of receiving your Afternoon Tea on a single three tier stand with all of your food in front of you in one go. That’s not how The Pear Tree rolls. First myself and my guest were offered tea or coffee – and the choices were wide. These included English Breakfast, Assam, Darjeeling or Rooibos as well as a range of local Ramsbury teas such as peppermint, berry mix or rose congou. I opted for coffee while my guest opted for an Earl Grey tea. Having settled back on the settee looking down the garden, our sandwiches arrived – cheese and tomato; ham and chutney; salmon and cucumber. Not being a fan of fish myself, my companion was thrilled to get all of the salmon while I pinched her ham and chutney sandwich. These were delicate but not so small you felt you barely had a mouthful. As it was such a hot day, we took a pause after sandwiches and spent 20 minutes wandering the gardens – which the staff were more than happy to accommodate. When we returned, a selection of cakes and scones were placed before us on

HE Pear Tree at Purton is a Cotswold stone, family run hotel and restaurant which was formerly a vicarage. It sits on the outskirts of the village of Purton, Wiltshire in 7.5 acres of tranquil gardens which include a vineyard, wildflower meadow and beautiful gardens lovingly attended by managing director, and keen gardener Anne Young.
a two-tier slate stand. The scones were fruit and plain with summer berry Purton jam and cream. Both my companion and I believe in jam first, cream second and tucked into our scones. These were small and not heavy in the least. The star of the show for me though was the jam which I could happily have finished off on my own. It was fruity and tasty but not at all sticky or thick. The cakes were to die for – carrot cake, caramel choux bun and fruit tart. Both of us loved the caramel choux bun which was melt in the mouth. Do have a napkin handy as I challenge anyone to eat without making a little mess. Unless you have a much bigger mouth than me ! I then dived into the carrot cake which was light and moist. After that I was bursting and just couldn’t eat any more. My companion made up for the fact I was such a lightweight. The Service Customer service was exceptional with the right degree of help and little interference. We did not find we were constantly being asked if we were ‘all right’ which can be exceptionally annoying when you are out with a friend or relative and just want some quality peace and quiet. Our server Justin was flexible to our needs and we almost felt we had the run of the gardens ourselves. We did bump into other guests as we looked around and exchanged a few words, however the Pear Tree, though small, has an atmosphere of a home from home. For £16 a head this Afternoon Tea is such good value with the added benefit of beautiful surroundings with peace and tranquillity thrown in.
“beautiful surroundings with peace and tranquillity thrown in”
Afternoon Tea is served every day except Mondays (when the hotel is closed) between 3pm and 5pm and advanced booking is advised. It is always served in the lounge or the library and occasionally in the garden itself. The Pear Tree can cater for vegetarian and gluten free guests and vouchers can be purchased. The founder of Oakmead Clinic talks to us about weight loss
“Everyone is different and their challenges are different but it does not mean they cannot do something about their weight. There is hope.” 54

H
ELEN ADAMS, founder of Wiltshire’s Oakmead Clinic can help people with a range of issues from supporting them with good nutrition as they undergo cancer treatment through to helping parents of newborn babies who are not feeding properly. One of the issues she deals with often is weight loss. She can help men and women who are overweight or morbidly obese who have tried every diet imaginable and who think they are destined to remain unhealthily big for the rest of their lives. Helen said: “Recently a lady came who wishes to lose weight and she has arthritis. Like many before her, she has tried many diets, managed to lose weight and then put it all back on and now feels worse. I have also recently supported a man who weighed more than 20 stones and was very unhappy when he first came. “People get so fixated on their weight. They feel it’s all their fault, they don’t have the willpower and this eats away at their self esteem.” The top three myths around weight loss for Helen are: • misconception about calories – Helen says all calories are not the same • issues of self esteem – Helen says forget the myth of ‘I should have been able to lose weight’ • not knowing where to start – Helen says many people simply don’t know how to go about achieving a healthy eating way of life. “The truth is in many cases, it’s not just about will power. Other things may be going on – they may have some food intolerance. They may be eating the wrong type of foods. They may have a leaky gut which can cause a range of problems. Things can be done to eat the right foods which are more nourishing, which release more energy, which can make someone move more, and which will make them feel better.” Anyone who is interested in weight loss will get a free half hour consultation with Helen for her to make some initial suggestions and for her to get a picture of their medical background and history. Helen calls this her ‘Discovery’ session and from that she can suggest one of her three packages to support them through a journey to better eating and health.
Her most popular treatment plan begins with a body composition analysis which looks at the amount of fat, visceral fat and muscle present in the body. Helen said: “This shows where problems can be occurring and helps me come up with a treatment plan. The body has indicators of what might be going on inside, things which have been building up for years in many cases. For some clients, Helen will also do a food intolerance test. She said: “The major culprits are grains, gluten, dairy and the nightshade family ie. potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, aubergines and cayenne pepper. Having found out if food intolerance is present, we will plan to avoid those foods by finding alternatives. This isn’t about ‘not having’ food, it’s about having nourishing food. Once clients realise this and take that step to change their eating habits, they find they don’t really miss the things they are not having, they enjoy the alternatives. Together we will come up with a way of eating which is enjoyable, keeps you full and is simply ordinary good food.” Clients can also get coaching over time to help them along the way. She said: “Old habits take a time to break and there may be hiccups along the way. For some clients they want that support, they may simply want to ask some questions like “I’m going on holiday how can I plan for not sliding backwards?” “We do set targets but they will be achievable. Small incremental changes can make a big difference over time. Initially it may be cutting five biscuits for a snack down to four. Everyone is different and their challenges are different but it does not mean they cannot do something about their weight. There is hope.” Helen is qualified in functional medicine, has a naturopath nutrition diploma, is a senior associate of the Royal Society of Medicine – a full list of her qualifications are available on her website: www.oakmeadclinic.co.uk

Let the Sun Shine! by Kelly Shaw
coats, which can feel, sticky and unpleasant in heat. They are not all the same though and finding one that works for you will be invaluable as the weather heats up.
I
T’S that time of year when the evenings are lighter and the weather is starting to really pick up. If you’re anything like me, the excitement of summer has well and truly begun and you’re ready to start mixing up your beauty routine to match. It’s a great time to remember how much you love your skin and get clued up on how important it is to protect it. Pursuing that flawless tan is important, but never as important as protecting your skin. It’s the largest organ in your body and arguably the most beautiful, so here’s how to get the most out of your SPF protection whilst still getting a glow. A daily SPF 30 or higher is definitely recommended during the summer months when the sun can be powerful. Even if you don’t burn easily, sun damage can be ageing and irreversible so getting into the habit of wearing an SPF moisturiser everyday can make a huge difference to your skin. There are many SPF moisturisers and primers on the market that

can be great under foundation or perfect for those ‘au naturel’ days when you aren’t too bothered about coverage. Ensuring that you pop one of these on each day is a fantastic investment – your future self will thank you. So much of skin damage and ageing is caused by over-exposure to sunlight, which can be easily avoidable.
“There are many SPF moisturisers and primers on the market ” If you don’t want to introduce another stage to your routine, there is always foundation with SPF already included, which can be a great time-saver. The trick with SPF foundation is to make sure that you sample as many as you can to see which works well with your skin. It is easy to be put off by the thickness of some of these base
There is often an elephant in the room when discussing SPF and clients always ask, ‘how can I tan if I wear SPF all day?’ Firstly, protecting the skin against UVA and UVB rays is always a priority as these harmful rays can cause cancer. More to the point, a moisturiser or primer with SPF won’t block the sun’s rays completely but it will protect the skin from harmful UV rays. If you are concerned about getting a glow then there are plenty of tanning products out there which are just as good as the real thing, without the risk. It may be worth investing in a daily tanning moisturiser that will slowly build up colour and give you that all-important tan. There are also some great SPF products out there that contain self-tan so you can glow as you go. Summer is a time for getting out and enjoying the sunshine, whether you are on holiday or at home. Introducing SPF as part of your routine is really important and will ensure you are protecting yourself from harmful UVA and UVB rays. With over 20 years’ experience as a beauty therapist, Kelly Shaw’s passion and dedication to the industry has enabled her to achieve professional success as Spa Director for some of the world’s most exclusive global resorts. Founder of Kelly Shaw Consultancy Ltd and Hampshire’s multi award-winning boutique salon k:SPA, Kelly also sits on the board for both CIBTAC and BABTAC - British Association of Beauty Therapy & Cosmetology.

HEALTH & BEAUTY Local Focus
Skin Deep
T
by Louise Addison
HE skin is our largest body organ. It works quietly away, constantly renewing itself, shedding dead cells every 28 days. It also provides a barrier against the environment and keeps our insides where they should be! The skin on our face and hands is more exposed than other areas so it’s unsurprising that the combined effects of pollution, UV exposure and stress mean these are the places which show signs of aging first. There are thousands of product on the market that promise us all manner of miracles but do any of them work and is there anything we can really do to hold back time? What about facials? Having a facial is a luxurious but is it really doing anything?
60
The Town Crier Magazine | JULY 2017
Beauticians say yes. Although the skin self-renews, dead cells on the surface make it look dull. Facials help by physically removing dead cell build-up, to reveal younger fresher skin underneath. There are a bewildering array of facials to suit skin type, age and budget they all follow a similar pattern. The first step is a deep cleanse, followed by exfoliation then, depending on which treatment you’ve agreed with your beautician it can include steaming, blackhead and whitehead extraction, massage, face mask and moisturiser. Variations include aromatherapy oils and acupressure. Your face should never feel sore or puffy when the treatment is over. You should look like a cleaner, shinier, healthier version of you! I’m up for that.
WHICH SKIN TECHNOLOGIES REALLY WORK? Alpha-hydroxy acids These are present in many moisturisers. Their effectiveness depends on concentration. Between 8-15% they are a very effective skin smoother. At strengths of over 15% they are used in chemical peels which should only be carried out by a Dermatologist. Trans-retinoic acid It’s been proven to reduce wrinkles, increase epidermal thickness and stimulate collagen deposition. It is effective in serum at very low concentrations but the effect is cumulative, so you will need to view it as a long-term strategy. It’s also very sensitive to sun light and breaks down on exposure, and can cause a mild skin reaction so should only be applied at night. Vitamin C serum This is a highly effective anti-oxidant and wrinkle-reducer but needs to be concentrated (10% or more) and stabilised in order to work. Keep it out of the light and use in the morning. It breaks down on exposure to sunlight so use it under a moisturiser with a high SPF. Use only stabilised, colour-free preparations. If there is a yellow tinge, it’s no longer effective.

Get the Summer Glow with the Zone Facelift from NuReflexology
W
ILTSHIRE Reflexologist Gabriela Slater is one of only a handful of practitioners in the county offering an innovative treatment – Zone Facelift
Gabriela, who lives in Chippenham, has trained with one of the UK’s leading authorities on this method – Ziggie Bergman at the London School of Reflexology. “This treatment can help anyone who feels concerned that their face no longer reflects their personality and they want to minimise the effects of wrinkles, dark circles under the eyes, sagging jowls or frown line. The treatment is perfect for someone who might want to look refreshed and youthful prior to a family event such as a wedding, birthday or other celebration” said Gabriela.
The treatment can slow down the aging process and achieve younger-looking and healthier skin. The Zone Facelift is a combinations of a delux facial including hot towels, facial reflexology, foot reflexology, lymphatic drainage, face lift massage and use of special facial tools such facial rollers, gua sha, quartz crystals. Organic Rose and Frankincense Oils are used by Gabriela during this luxurious treatment to nourish and rejuvenate the skin. One of Gabriela’s clients had a course of 5 treatments to reduce the wrinkles around her eyes, forehead and also the appearance of a frown line and this is what she had to say about the treatments. “It was a great experience and after my first session, my skin felt tighter and ‘glowing’. The next few sessions made my skin really smooth and soft, I noticed that my wrinkles and frown line were significantly reduced. I was so impressed with how my skin had improved over the course of treatments. I would highly recommend it as it really worked for me.” This gentle and non – invasive treatment can help to lift the skin naturally and stimulate collagen production. It sculpts the face, neck and jawline resulting in youthful and radiant complexion. Zone Facelift treatments are available in Chippenham and each treatment lasts 90minutes. The first treatment costs £45, with follow ups at £75. Please contact Gabriela on 07947 357956 or info@nureflexology.co.uk to find out more.

Summer Hazards for Pets Dr Emma Pemberthy BVM BVS MRCVS
www.georgevetgroup.co.uk The George Veterinary Hospital: 01666 823165 Royal Wootton Bassett: 01793 852458
Summer provides many opportunities to get outside with your pets but there are a few things to watch out for. Heatstroke Signs of heatstroke in dogs and cats include excessive panting, salivation, distressed behaviour and collapse. Older or overweight pets, or those with conditions such as heart disease, laryngeal paralysis or asthma are more at risk. If you think your pet has heatstroke you can: • Provide cool water or add ice cubes to their water bowl • Use a fan to provide cool air • Keep them in the shade • Cover them with wet towels • Contact your vet if symptoms are severe or don’t resolve quickly Avoid heatstroke by exercising your dog during the cooler parts of the day (e.g. first thing in the morning or late evening) and always have water available to drink. And please never leave your pet in a car during warm weather; even with the windows down the temperature inside the car will quickly exceed that outside the vehicle – it’s distressing for the pet and potentially fatal.
Insect bites and stings Most bites or stings will cause a small red swelling in the skin but occasionally they can result in a swelling of the face and neck leading to excessive itching or discomfort. Very rarely your pet can have an allergic reaction and show symptoms such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat or distress. Contact your vet immediately if you are concerned. BBQs As tempting as it is to share titbits from your BBQ it can create problems for any pet. Unfamiliar or fatty foods can cause an upset stomach and hot food can cause scalding of the mouth and throat. 64
The Town Crier Magazine | JULY 2017
Ensure your pet doesn’t have access to any alcohol or articles that won’t pass easily through the gut such as corn cobs, cooked bones (these can shatter easily) or kebab sticks. If your pet is sitting in the sun they may need protection with a pet-safe sunscreen. White animals or those with exposed pink skin are most at risk.
Fly Strike Don’t forget your rabbits, guinea pigs and other small pets this summer. Fly strike is caused when flies lay eggs on your pet and the hatching maggots eat the skin and underlying tissues. It is a very painful condition that can develop in just a few hours and can cause death if not treated urgently. Contact your vet as soon as you notice your pet has fly strike. But to help prevent it you can: • Check your pet’s bottom and above the tail at least twice daily • Make sure they are clean and dry • Check for and remove dirty bedding • Apply a product to help stop flies laying eggs • Check there is nothing preventing your pet from grooming such as obesity, arthritis or dental disease Contact your veterinary practice for further advice on any of these topics and we trust you will enjoy another glorious British summer!

PETS
I
T’S summer. We’re more likely to head to the park with the family dog. We’re also more likely to leave doors open so our beloved pet might sneak out. Every year many much-loved family pets run off and are never found, or they are hit by cars, killed or injured. And every year there are news stories about dogs getting out of their homes or gardens and attacking a passerby. How should we reduce the risk of our dog becoming lost, causing a nuisance or posing a risk to the general public. Neuter Neutering prevents dogs reproducing. The operation is routine and carried out under general anaesthetic. But as well as preventing unwanted puppies, neutering tends to produce calmer, less territorial behaviour in males. They are less likely to wander off in search of female dogs ’in season’. In females it avoids the messy inconvenience of ‘seasons’ and prevents womb infections, which can prove fatal.
Male dogs can be neutered any time from four months old. Female dogs can be spayed before their first season though some people prefer to leave it until three months after. Discuss this with your vet. The Dogs Trust runs a subsidised neutering campaign in several areas of the country. Check out their website. Microchip This is the best way to ensure that if your dog goes missing, he is returned to you. Each microchip has its own unique ID number plus the name of the dog’s owners and a contact number. The tiny chip is inserted under the dog’s skin, between his shoulder blades. If the dog escapes, the police, a vet or a dog warden can scan him and reunite him with his family. Train A well trained dog is a happy dog, and much nicer to live with than an untrained one!
Who let the Dogs Out? Responsible dog ownership 66
The Town Crier Magazine | JULY 2017
There are many good dog training clubs around. Choose one which encourages the use of kindness and positive reinforcement. The Kennel Club run the UK’s largest dog training programme, known as the Good Citizen Dog Scheme. It starts at puppy foundation level and from there you can progress through bronze, silver and gold awards. Exercise This is really important. A dog needs a chance to stretch his legs and explore his environment on a daily basis. A properly exercised dog is also less likely to wander. If you work, think about employing a dog-walker. Make sure they’re police-checked and insured, and ask for references. Be a responsible owner and your dog will thank you. Useful web addresses www.dogstrust.org.uk www.thekennelclub.org.uk

MOTORING
Range Rover Evoque Convertible By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist -tweeting @carwriteups
Y
OU have got to ask why people spend so much on a piece of metal with a wheel attached to each corner. It almost seems a bit nutty when all most of us want is a tool to get us from A to B. But cars aren’t always about transportation. They can be about our emotions and our egos. Some of us use a new car as a status trophy – a badge of honour to show how well we’ve done in life. I suppose if we have a head-turner of a car in the Western world it’s about pleasure-seeking, too – and having an easier life. Let’s face it; we would rather have a shiny, luxurious car to travel around in than a rust bucket. And that need for self-satisfaction can overrule the down-to-earth side of us when we are selecting a car. 68
The Town Crier Magazine | JULY 2017
Some of us kick the word ‘practicality’ to the kerb anyway. I mean, good grief, in Great Britain we purchase more convertibles than many other countries in the EU. Why is this? After all, the UK is often dank and cloudy. Again, it comes down to that feel-good factor. Going topless when there’s sunshine in our country produces a massive rush - well, it does for me, anyway. It’s a better remedy for melancholia than a happy pill from the GP, I’d bet. But being prescribed a drop top car isn’t likely to happen at the doctor’s! Speaking of fresh-air motoring, the Range Rover Evoque Convertible has been launched recently. The looks of this SUV take a bit of getting used to, but they grow on you.
Tested in Courchevel, France
As the fifth fellow of the Range Rover club – and the first convertible – Land Rover believes the all-new car will play a key part in continuing Range Rover’s tale of success, forging a fresh SUV sector. If industry professionals’ prophecies about a 20 per cent expansion in the international SUV market over the next five years prove accurate, then, the car firm has nothing but sunbeams heading towards it. The Range Rover Evoque Convertible has a material roof that can be triggered on the move – as long as the SUV isn’t doing more than 30mph.The five-layer top will fold down in around 18 seconds and it will go back up in approximately 21 seconds. Inside, the colossal InControl Touch Pro nav is pleasing – and,
more crucially, it works very well. Genuinely, the pinch-to-zoom function is as quick as Apple’s iPad or iPhone.
sprint - but both manage a top end of 121mph. The 240PS petrol propelled power unit is nippier, getting to 62mph in 8.6 seconds.
The Range Rover Evoque droptop will seat four people and, for a convertible, it has an adequate 251-litre load area, too. The other good thing is that the roof opens and closes inaudibly and it tucks away compactly, instead of pilingup on the car’s tailgate.
On and off-road, the non-tintop SUV seems just as gifted as its hard-topped sibling – with indistinguishable clearances, and a mutual 500mm wading depth. Indeed, at the car’s European launch in the French Alps, the Evoque Convertible worked its way up, down – and through everything asked of it – including deep snow.
You can go for either a petrol unit or a diesel engine, buoyed by turbo power. This is all linked up to a smooth-operating nine-speed automatic ‘box, and all-wheel drive. The 2.0 turbo diesel is the best engine if you’re after economy, returning around 49.6mpg on average. The diesel Evoque Convertible shifts from zero to 62mph in 10.3 seconds, which is 1.3 seconds longer than the hard-top Coupe’s
I doubt many motorists going for a roofless Range Rover will take the trouble with the off-roading part – but it is reassuring to know the SUV can do more than just look sexy in affluent suburbs. The all-new Range Rover Evoque Convertible is being made at Land Rover’s Halewood plant, alongside the five-door and Coupe versions,
and it is on sale in over 170 markets around the world. Prices kick off at around £47,500, which is £5,200 more than a Range Rover Evoque Coupe with a roof. Abarth 124 Spider
By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist @carwriteups
T
HE Abarth 124 Spider is cast from the same die as the Fiat 124, and to improve it Abarth has used the same tactic as it did to change the Fiat 500 into the Abarth 595. In other words, it has added lithe looks, noise and, most importantly, muscle. The Abarth 124 Spider uses the same platform as Mazda’s MX-5 and Fiat’s 124. However, while the Fiat has been constructed to be more of a cruising vehicle, the Abarth is more hardcore – and the most performance driven of the three brands. The Abarth uses the same 1.4-litre, four-cylinder turbo-charged petrol engine as Fiat’s 124 - except in the Abarth it produces 170PS, compared with the Fiat 124’s 140PS. The Abarth’s power unit spins with the proper Italian sports car vigour you’d hope for. It feels wayward and entertaining at high revs - and you’re aware of the turbocharger when you push on. The sports car is quick to respond and the gear change is rapid and exact. 72
The Town Crier Magazine | JULY 2017
The best thing about the 124 Spider, though, is the noise it makes. Popping burbles emit from the quad tailpipes when doing the 0-62mph gallop, as I found out testing the car at Silverstone Circuit, in Northamptonshire. The twoseater Abarth will reach the magical figure in 6.8 seconds, on its way to 143mph. Fold the roof, via a simple fastener, and the Abarth 124’s sound is even more delectable. For an added dose of pleasure, the Abarth 124 has a Sport setting. Hit the button and things become louder, tighter and faster. The throttle feels more insistent, and weight is also added to the steering, making you feel even more united with the road – or race track. The 124 Spider feels most pleased driven hard, with the tail-end hunkered down over the rear wheels. Even when you go too brutally into a bend and lose traction for a jiffy, the Abarth 124 continues to play nicely. Working out what the rump of the car is going to do soon becomes second nature.
On the whole, the Abarth 124 Spider is a grin maker, although your beam might falter for a moment when you see the pricetag - £29,565. Yes, it’s a large lump of cash, but once you’ve heard the melodious tailpipes, felt the performance and experienced the handling for yourself, you’ll appreciate that this car is worth every single bank note.
PROS ‘N’ CONS • Appearance √ • Noise √ • Handling √ • Excitement √ FAST FACTS • Max speed: 143 mph • 0-62 mph: 6.8 secs • Combined mpg: 44.1 • Engine layout: 1368cc 4-cylinder turbo petrol • Max. power (PS): 170 • CO2: 148 g/km Price: £29,565

GARDENING
Take a seat by Rachael Leverton
T
HIS year I decided to buy an all-weather seat for my garden. Bizarrely I didn’t actually have a permanent place to sit where I could admire my hard work. There is an art to choosing and placing garden seating. First decide whether you want to sit in full sun, or dappled shade. Watch the path of the sun and make a note of which particular parts of the garden are illuminated at each time of day. Think about when you will sit in you garden. Will you want to eat breakfast out there? If so pop a seat and little table in a spot which catches the morning sun. If like many of us the only chance you get to sit out is during the evening then look for an area which is bathed in golden light of late afternoon. Would you like to dine out doors in the evening? Can you make room for a table, and would a patio heater be a good investment, so you can make the most of the setting. If the only area you can place a bench is in baking sun then it’s good to place some sort of overhead structure. It can be as simple or elaborate as you like. Sawn tanalised timbers can be used to make a very simple frame over which you can train a vine or climber. Use galvanised screws and it should last 20 years,
76
The Town Crier Magazine | JULY 2017
providing a delightful place to rest. Choose all-weather furniture for ease of use unless you have oodles of storage space for the winter months. Plastic is cheap but can look very tacky. There are some wonderful synthetic wicker style pieces available now though, and excellent metal furniture which requires no care at all.
My favourite material is wood though mostly this does require ongoing maintenance. I did discover some rather attractive polystyrene slatted furniture on an aluminium frame which looked remarkably like the real deal. If finances allow you can buy beautiful teak wood furniture which requires very little in the way of after care. Try before you buy! Yes you want your furniture to look wonderful but the most important factor is comfort. Are the seats wide enough? Is there enough back support? Does it come with pads? Finally, to bring a touch of indoor comfort and style to an outdoor area I discovered outdoor rugs! Yes really. Made from long-lasting material, outdoor rugs can cope with rain or shine. They are made from robust, resistant, easy-care synthetic fibres, which absorb minimal moisture and which dry quickly afterwards.
“There is an art to choosing and placing garden seating.”
They don’t fade even when exposed to bright sunlight and are cleaned easily by vacuuming, with a broom, or by beating them. I was a sceptic, but I think I’m a convert and bought a little one to place in front of my bench. My dog loves it!

PLANT OF THE MONTH
Hydrangea JULY is when Hydrangea blooms are at their best. A vigorous and hardy plant with numerous varieties, blooms with vibrant colours ranging from white, pink, purple and blue. Many varieties, such as the mop-head, have the unique ability to change colour, adapting to soil type and environment. The colour change is due to the soil pH - those with pink or blue flowers tend to be blue in acid soil and pink in alkaline conditions. White flowers remain white regardless of soil pH. Hydrangeas can be planted in borders or containers but wherever it is planted it will need copious watering. The name roughly translated means “water barrel” alluding to the cup-shaped flowers and need for hydration. Try to use rainwater to water them since mains water can affect bloom colour.

Cool Customer Choosing a new fridge
T
HE fridge has come of age. Gone are the days of a squat little white cupboard with a tiny freezer compartment. Fridges have gone large! Some even come with custom panels that exactly match your kitchen cabinets. There are six basic types of fridge: Top Freezer - A traditional fridge, that’s good for a fairly tight spot. These tend to offer the most space for their size but need space for a wide swing of the doors. They also require you to crouch to reach the lower shelves which may be an issue if you are tall or have arthritic knees. Bottom Freezer - We tend to use the freezer less so it might make good sense to have the fridge shelves at eye-level. You tend to need a larger model to get the same useable capacity as a top freezer. French Door - This has two narrow doors on top, opening from the centre, and the freezer below. The space-saving small-
82
The Town Crier Magazine | JULY 2017
swing doors have the added value of opening only half the fridge when stashing smaller items. They tend to be wider than top or bottom freezers. Side-by-Side - With the fridge on one side and freezer on the other, these usually have throughthe-door ice and water dispensers and temperature-controlled. The narrow doors can be useful if your kitchen is small abut some don’t open wide enough for large boxes, and the tall, narrow compartments can mean some items disappear to the back, never to be seen again! Built-In - These are made to fit almost flush with cabinets and counters. They are typically bottom-freezer or side-by-side styles and match your cabinets. Compact or Mini - Perfect for a bedsit or a kitchenette. Keep in mind these models may have only one quarter the capacity of a regular fridge, but cost just as much to operate. Always measure where you plan to put the fridge before you buy.
Check too that it can fit through doorways and remember that you will need space to open the swing doors and for a one inch clearance around sides and back for adequate airflow. Bigger is probably better as it means you can shop in bulk, and smaller models do not necessarily mean smaller running costs. Energy efficiency - All new fridges are a lot more efficient than they were a decade ago. They all have to be A+ rated now. Yet even between A+ models running costs can vary widely. Your fridge runs for 24 hours per day so it makes sense to d your research. Compare the Energy Guide labels of your favoured fridges, and then compare the annual operating costs and the kilowatt-hours used per year. Do all this and you will be a very cool customer when it comes to making your purchase.

Faith Matters
For Heaven’s Sake I
never cease to be amazed by the depths of cruelty in our world. As I write this article it is a week since the terrorist attacks in Manchester, London, Egypt and Afghanistan. Following such attacks many will live with the emotional and physical scars for the rest of their lives. When faced with such horror I feel the need to do something. But in reality there is little that I can do, except that I can pray. I was taught to pray by my parents from a very young age. Every night before going to sleep my mum or dad would pray with me, and there is one prayer that we prayed together that I will always remember. You may know it too. It is the prayer that Jesus taught his followers and it’s often called ‘The Lord’s Prayer’. Although a better name for it would be ‘The Disciples Prayer’. The one line that comes to mind in such tragedies as the Manchester and London attacks is ‘Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven'. I have prayed The Lord’s Prayer every day since the attacks. And I have been amazed in how many ways I have seen a glimpse of God’s Kingdom. We might say that ‘God’s Kingdom’ is where God reigns. You can see his Kingdom in the places and people where good is taking place and God's will is being done. I have been astonished by the number of stories that I have seen on TV and read in the media that demonstrate the ‘goodness of God’ since the horrors in Manchester and London. There was the work of the emergency services. We have so much to thank our police, and health service personnel for. Many of them worked long hours over those days keeping us safe and saving lives. I was moved by the story of two rough sleepers demonstrating God’s Kingdom when they ran to help the victims as they left the arena. I was moved by the young lady who set out to raise money for them on a crowdfunding internet site and moved to hear that one of them has already been offered a job and a flat. The mother of the other had not seen her son for five years. She contacted the local newspaper in a desperate bid to get back in touch with him. She had no idea he was sleeping rough until she saw him being interviewed on TV. It was heartening to read that the pair were reunited after she made the journey to Manchester from her home in Norfolk.

It was also uplifting to see that people of faith and people of no faith came together to show that they would not be overcome by hate but would overcome hate with love. It reminds me of the black civil rights campaigner in the USA, Martin Luther King Jr who once said, ‘Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.’ As I prayed those words daily ‘Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as in heaven’ it seemed as though a little more of God’s Kingdom came into being each day. People were changed and communities were more embracing of the other. One of the things I have learned about praying is that often we become the answer to our prayers. That, in praying for a better more loving world we become more like the people that God wants us to be. And so I hope that in little ways I have become the answer to my prayer. That I have become more loving, forgiving and caring in God’s world, helping to bring about his Kingdom more fully. I believe in the power of prayer. In fact, I believe the more people who pray the Lord’s Prayer with sincerity, the more they and the world will be changed. In the light of the recent terrorist attacks I pray that we may all become peacemakers. So I leave you with the prayer that Jesus taught his followers. You might like to join me in praying it every day too: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Blessings on you all Rev Sam King

BOOKS
A Good Read
Little Altars Everywhere
This is, in many ways, a collection of short stories, each giving a glimpse into life for the Walker clan.
.........................................................................................
From the summers spent in Spring Creek, to dance classes, a pregnant dog, and a runaway daughter, the pieces gradually come together. Accompanying the family through their experiences are the YaYas: four close friends, including Vivi, who are loud, colourful, and vibrant. But this is not always an easy story to read. Families can hide secrets that the outside world will never know and the consequences won’t be felt for years.
by Rebecca Wells
One of the marks of a great book is that it can let you travel the world, and even through time, from the comfort of your own living room (or coffee shop – depending on where you are reading). This is exactly what Little Altars Everywhere does. From your familiar surroundings in the UK this transports you to Louisiana in the heart of the southern states of America and throws you into the lives of the Walker family. Siddalee is the eldest daughter in the family and she is the narrator who opens the story. Growing up in the 1960s life is changing around her and it is only as an adult that she can begin to deal with the turbulence of her childhood. Each chapter is told by a different member of the family. There is Vivi, the matriarch, and Shep, a father who tries to provide for his family but is under a lot of pressure and unable to quite express his feelings. Siddalee’s voice is joined by her siblings, Little Shep, Lulu, and Baylor.

The Beast Within by Serena Valentino
......................................................................................... We all know the story of Beauty and the Beast. Whether it is through the original fairy tale, Disney’s 1991 animated hit, or the recent live action remake. But is there something missing from the story? How much do we know about what happened BEFORE Belle arrived at the Beast’s castle to rescue her father? What really happened to turn a beloved prince into a reclusive beast? Offering a fresh twist on the classic story, this tween/teen read contains many ‘ooh, that’s clever’ moments. Of course, we know that at the end of the story Gaston will arrive at the castle to kill the Beast. But suppose they were once best friends? Filled with familiar characters such as Lumiere and Cogsworth this novel offers another layer to the story we all know. Whilst it is not the greatest work of literature it will definitely appeal to fans of either the animated or live action movie, and is one of a growing series of novels telling the darker side of Disney classics.

JO DEACON
It must just be me !!! When the first tang of Autumn scents the air, the first morning mist drifts across the fields, the skeletal trees turn white like ghostly fingers against a grey sky, or the first magical white flake of snow drifts lazily down to the frozen ground on the cold air, then I am ashamed to admit I am in my element ! When the TV weather map shows great orange patches right over most of the country, my heart sinks ! There! I’ve said it. I do not like the Summer! Maybe it’s because I was born on the back seat of a taxi in the middle of a blizzard, but I have never been able to stand the heat of the season everyone looks forward to with such eagerness. Maybe it’s that at the grand old age of 72, I am still having menopausal hot flushes, or maybe the simple truth is – I’m just plain nuts ! Whatever it is, I droop, sweat, moan and complain while the sun blazes and all around me, happy people are out and about, soaking up every ray. Even my desktop computer is affected by the heat. By the time it has finished configuring, catching up, and generally seeming to be having a jolly little game all its own, by the time it puts up “welcome”, I’ve generally forgotten what the hell I was going to write. Tonight it surpassed itself – 15 minutes before it allowed me to join in. The heat really does make me dafter than usual though. Try these for examples :- Buying a box of dishwasher tablets instead of washing machine scale preventatives. (Apart from my beloved Fred, we haven’t got a dishwasher.) 88
The Town Crier Magazine | JULY 2017
- Spraying my underarms with hairspray. - Cracking an egg into the rubbish bin and trying to fry the shell. - Using Fred’s Preparation H instead of my hair conditioner, (which probably helped shrink my already confused brain to the size of a peanut.) - Dipping my paintbrush into my coffee mug – which I must admit did give an interesting hue to the snow scene I was working on. Have you ever seen a mudman? It’s a little stranger than a snow one. Need I say more, or are you now firmly convinced I’m losing the plot? When I was younger, (yes you cheeky so and sos, I CAN remember back that far!) I used to have a handle on life, but somewhere along the way – it fell off! I wish the powers that be – SKY TV, Microsoft, Plusnet, Vodaphone etc, and all the other electronic giants that muck about with our gadgets would leave off too with their never ending, “We’ve made your PC even more efficient, You’ll find even more goodies on your TV now, (I’d be delighted just .to find my old favourites in the same place I left ‘em.) You can now use your mobile abroad with no higher charges. (Great IF you go abroad, which we have no intention of doing.) And WHY is my PC inbox full of messages from banks I don’t deal with, things like Amazon and the like etc telling me a stop has been temporarily put on my account or would I like to change my order as the motorbike I ordered (????) is out of stock. You’re all gonna hate me for this, but – roll on Autumn. Bye for this month folks, have a great Summer and don’t forget the sunscreen cream. I use a brilliant one – it’s called closed curtains and an electric fan! ............ Jo Deacon...@...2017 ............
