Malmesbury Travel Agent’s Cakes for Cancer Charity Miles Morgan Travel cooked up its first collective coffee morning for national cancer charity, Macmillan Cancer Support.
Villagers secure the future of The Rising Sun The Rising Sun, originally built in the early 19th century, sits in the small lively village of Christian Malford in rural Wiltshire; it has had a mixed history, being at different times in its two hundred years a small brewery, a butchers shop, a farrier's, a railway ticket office and, finally, a public house. Today, it is a ‘Free House’ which serves good beer and wine as well as excellent food in a recently refurbished, but old fashioned and charming, country inn. Facing closure in March 2017, it was time for decisive action; so, the story has a happy ending as The Rising Sun was taken over by a group of villagers who set about returning it to being a proper country pub serving good, traditional, food. This refurbishment includes; the improvement of disabled access and addition of baby changing facilities. There is also a beer garden, a boules court and a play area for children. Friendly dogs are also welcome in the bar area and beer garden. The new owners also aim to keep the pub’s strong reputation, which sees it in 3rd place on TripAdvisor for the local area. The Rising Sun also holds special events every month in addition to the popular ‘Burger Night’ on Wednesdays and ‘Fizz Friday.’ These have included wine tastings, live music, BBQ and a Bollywood curry night. The aim of the new owners is to guarantee The Rising Sun’s future in Christian Malford for a very long time to come. Come and see for yourselves, we look forward to welcoming you very soon!! www.theriser.pub 6
The award-winning travel agent hosted events across all 15 of their South West branches including Malmesbury, as part of Macmillan's annual 'World's Biggest Coffee Morning'. Miles Morgan Travel raised £1,282 for the charity, thanks to many of their loyal customers who were invited to share an eclectic mix of homemade cakes, sweet treats and a cup of coffee. Meg Gardiner, Malmesbury branch manager said: "Many of our team have seen first-hand the effect cancer can have, not only on the person diagnosed, but also on those closest to them. "So for us, it was really important to get each of our branches across the South West and South Wales involved in order to raise as much money as possible to help." Managing Director, Miles Morgan added: "We would like to take this opportunity to thank our team as well as our amazing customers who helped us in raising funds for Macmillan. It was lovely to see so many of our customers supporting these events." For further information, please visit www.milesmorganttravel.co.uk

Good Energy sponsor Chippenham Rugby Club Chippenham-based green energy provider, Good Energy, has this week announced a new partnership with Chippenham Rugby Club (CRFC). The sponsorship agreement, which will initially be for the 2017-18 season, will support over 200 children aged 5-16, who play for the club’s “minis” and “juniors” teams. Chippenham RFC has been responsible for the development of several high profile players, including ex-England player, Kim Oliver. Before women’s rugby was well-established in the UK, while a teenager Kim challenged the sport’s national governing body, to let her play with the boy’s team. Kim’s actions ultimately resulted in the authorities agreeing to support girls’ rugby nationally. Kim went on to earn 43 caps for England women’s team, including a World Cup final. Kim commented that if it wasn’t for the support she received as a teenager, she “probably have stopped playing like so many others girls.” She also believes it is brilliant that a community-minded local company, like Good Energy is stepping up to support the club.” Juliet Davenport, Founder and CEO of Good Energy, commented: “We’re so proud to help the club welcome local boys and girls that want to play rugby, regardless of ability. I can’t wait to get more involved in the club and watch the kids progressing on the pitch.” Alex Brooks, Chairman of Chippenham RFC’s Minis said that having a purpose driven company such as Good Energy as a sponsor will help the club achieve their work of “encouraging boys and girls into the sport and bring out the best in them”

A new sport in Royal Wootton Bassett The Upper Thames Boules Club has received a substantial funding boost from Crapper & Sons Ltd. The money has been made available through the Landfill Communities Fund (LCF) which is administered for Crapper & Sons Ltd. by Community First, the Rural Community Council for Wiltshire. The money has been used to build a boules terrain at the Gerard Buxton Sports ground, enhancing that legacy to a 23 acre community sports site offering football, tennis, and cricket facilities. RWBSA is voluntary run, and the site is home to the Town’s football, tennis, cricket and road running clubs, therefore offering sporting facilities to community groups such as local schools and clubs. RWBSA mission is to provide affordable sporting facilities and opportunities to both its members and local community. The club has been welcomed by Royal Wootton Bassett Sports Association and have been allocated 8 pistes which will allow up to 50 players at any one time. The club will move to Royal Wootton Bassett during the winter and will be arranging some, ‘come & try’ events in 2018. Tripboat demonstrates potential of restored canal A NEW tripboat is demonstrating the potential of a restored waterway through the Wiltshire countryside. The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust has made great progress in breathing new life into the once-derelict route between Chippenham and Lacock. Earlier this year the charity completed the restoration of a continuous stretch from the former flight of locks near Pewsham to Double Bridge near Reybridge, a distance of almost 1.2 kilometres. This allows a specially-adapted workboat to transport volunteers and their equipment back and forth along the route and to make improvements to the opposite side of the bank. Now the Trust has used a legacy donation to purchase a tripboat as well, which will be used on restored sections of the canal and other waterways across the area. The boat was officially named and launched at the restored Pewsham Wharf on Saturday afternoon, before taking invited guests on a slow and scenic trip along the waterway. It was the first time in more than a century that people could view the canal from the same perspective as the original narrowboats. More than five metres long and two metres wide, the ‘Mary Archard’ features a bow which can be lowered to provide wheelchair access. The £14,000 cost was funded by a £9,400 legacy from local resident 14

“And, hopefully in the not too distant future, this same view will be enjoyed by narrowboats once again – but this time for tourism rather than trade.” The Wilts & Berks Canal once carried goods from the Kennet & Avon Canal near Melksham to the Thames & Severn Canal near Cricklade and the River Thames near Abingdon, connecting Chippenham, Calne, Royal Wootton Bassett and Swindon. Soon everyone will have an opportunity to glide peacefully through the

It opened in 1810 but was formally abandoned in 1914 due to competition from the railways and soon fell into disrepair. The Pewsham stretch was overgrown and largely forgotten. However, today the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust is steadily restoring several sections around the county. The stretch between Chippenham and Lacock includes a restored bridge, spillweir and mooring points, as well as benches, birdboxes and information boards. Longer-term, the aim is to extend the line to Melksham where a planning application has already been submitted to create a new junction with the K&A at Semington and then bring the canal along the River Avon through the town centre before reconnecting with the historic route south of Lacock. ARTS
Peter Waldron Swindon Museum & Art Gallery (SM&AG) is holding an exciting exhibition of paintings and sketches by Swindon-born artist Peter Waldron. Until Saturday 18th November 2017.
This special exhibition will celebrate Waldron’s career through four series of artworks, each inspired by the rhythm, colour and energy of natural forms. His vibrant abstract paintings draw on motifs from his surroundings in Crete, where he lives and works for half the year. Cacti, caves and flowers are the key to these large expressive canvases, characterised by layered markings and expressive brush strokes.
In Waldron’s words the paintings are “a response to working and living on Crete – to the light, colour, warmth, drama and the sheer magic of the Cretan landscape, language and its people”.
Waldron completed his initial training at Swindon College, before moving on to the Chelsea School of Art where he met important artists including John Hoyland, Howard Hodgkin and Richard Hamilton, who feature in Swindon’s permanent collection. Waldron has since accomplished a successful career, having exhibited extensively throughout Britain and Crete.
Queenie’s coming Home! We’re pleased to announce that Queenie the Hilltop Hare, created by local artist Sue Steele, will be coming home to Malmesbury! Bidders were overjoyed to have won the beautiful Hare at the charity auction on Friday 6th October. The hare, covered in tiny mosaic pieces, artistically depicts much loved scenes of Malmesbury. Residents in the town felt it was too beautiful to leave the town and quite rightly so! Queenie was originally sponsored by Malmesbury Town Council and prior to the auction, generous donations were given by Malmesbury people to keep her. The bid donations, collected by Sue Poole ensured that the Town Council will assume formal ownership on behalf of the town.
SM&AG is thrilled to be hosting this exhibition, which aims to celebrate a Swindon-born artist who has found international success with his exciting, bold paintings.
Efforts certainly paid off, as Queenie will now take her place on permanent display in the entrance of the Town Hall. As Sue Poole, the former Town Council member trusted to make the bid states:
The exhibition has been generously sponsored by the Friends of SM&AG, a charity dedicated to supporting SM&AG’s work with collections, exhibitions and audiences.
‘I can say officially that we managed to get Queenie at the auction. She was lot 84, so we had to sit through the previous 83 lots, getting more and more nervous! Such a relief when the hammer went down and we had won. Huge thanks to everyone who contributed….’
www.swindonmuseumandartgallery.org.uk/event/ peter-waldron-odyssey/
The Cotswolds Hare Trail Going for auction were 104 hares in total, who, for the previous six months have formed the Cotswold’s Hare Trail, which closed on the 10th of September. The decorated hares were dotted around 28 towns and villages throughout the Cotswolds and were beautifully created and decorated from the combined efforts of artists and designers. The aim was to promote the Cotswold area as a hub for tourism, to support the cultural heritage of the Cotswold area and allow local school children to connect to their home region, through the inspiration of art. The trail was organised as part of the Cirencester March Hare Festival. This is a not-forprofit Arts Festival, with the funds raised from the project directed both to the National Star Charity who support young individuals with disabilities. Queenie will certainly be receiving a royal welcome in Malmesbury after the hotly anticipated bid, providing a proud new addition to the town. Marlborough features in Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s Christmas cards
d
THE popular ‘Christmas in Marlborough’ card is once again being sold to raise funds for Wiltshire Air Ambulance. Following the success of the card last year, the charity is selling it as part of its 2017 range of Christmas cards.
The card has been kindly designed, painted and donated by Marlborough artist Colin Palmer. It shows Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s helicopter flying over a snowy Marlborough High Street with the Town Hall in the background.
Colin is a member of Marlborough Artists and has been a professional artist for over 30 years. He said: “I’m delighted to hear that my design attracted so many buyers last year and I would encourage people to support such an admirable cause.” As well as ‘Christmas in Marlborough’ the charity’s other cards include ‘Christmas Greetings from Wiltshire,’ which shows the helicopter flying over a White Horse during snowfall, plus other traditional Christmas scenes. Claire Kelly, Head of People, Retail and Supporter Engagement, said: “Colin Palmer’s card was really popular with the public last year and we are delighted to be selling it again as part of our range of Christmas cards for 2017. The funds raised by our Christmas cards will help to keep our helicopter and crew flying and saving lives.” The cards are in shops and other outlets all over the county and are priced at £4.00 per pack of ten. Malmesbury league of friends ensures local man’s continued mobility The mobility of a Malmesbury man left brain-damaged after an horrific road accident 15 years ago has been assured as a result of a new through-floor lift at his home paid for by the Malmesbury League of Friends (MLOF). When Richard Edington returned home after over a year in hospital, the installation of a lift in his home enabled him to move from his bedroom and shower facility on the first floor down to the living room. But after over ten years of daily use, the lift finally broke down and urgently needed replacing. The new lift is now in place and working perfectly. Richard’s partner and carer Lynn Ashman said: “ We are both so grateful for the donation by MLOF. Without the new lift, Richard would be confined to his room on the first floor, so it really is essential.” The lift is one of further recent donations from MLOF, which include: • Essential repairs to the Malmesbury Community minibus. • A spirometer, which measures the movement of air into and out of one’s lungs, for use at the Malmesbury Primary Care Centre. MLOF Chairman David Hide said: “ We were delighted to pay for the installation of the new lift, which is essential for Richard’s mobility. And we were also pleased to help with the other two items, typical of the help we can provide.” More information can be obtained from the MLOF website: www.mlof.co.uk

All the Range...
Once the sole preserve of the country farmhouse kitchen, range ovens can now be found in the most modern of homes. Combining traditional style and cutting edge technology, a range oven will often be one of the key things that makes the kitchen the heart of the home.
November is a great time to buy a new range cooker. Thoughts are increasingly turning towards food and cooking in readiness for Christmas and there are some great offers around to tempt you. From 1st to the 13th November Knees has up to 20% off Belling, Smeg and Rangemaster range ovens.
As with the purchase of any major appliance, working out which product is right for you, can be confusing. In a nutshell, the key considerations are: size (typically 90 - 110cm); what type of fuel (electric, induction or dual fuel); style (traditional, contemporary or somewhere in between) and, of course, budget. At Knees, we sell a good cross section of all types of ranges from respected brands Rangemaster, Belling, Smeg and Stoves.
What’s more, our wonderful staff at Knees are always there to talk you through the different options to make sure you get the right range for your kitchen, your family and within your budget.
If you do pop into one of our stores, take the opportunity to do a little Christmas shopping. We have some lovely new products from Cath Kidston and Sophie Allport, and lots of fabulous festive decorations, from glitzy baubles with an alpine feel to trinkets with a more traditional twist. There’s even a whole range dedicated to pet lovers!
Up to 20% off Belling, Smeg and Rangemaster range cookers from 1st November to 13th November at Knees Home and Electrical. Visit www.knees.co.uk to see more.

Five Festive Gift Ideas
Five tips for North Wiltshire gifts you can buy this Christmas. For an unusual stocking filler – visit Previous Homewares online or at the shop in High Street, Corsham. Owner Nicola White scours the country for both modern and vintage one-off items at affordable prices. A recent addition is a handmade card by Diana Wilson (who creates collage then handglitters) - this one is a Previous exclusive of Corsham Court and the peacocks priced at £3.50 www.previoushomewares.co.uk
Gift vouchers from Simply Flowers, of Church Street Calne The team can also sell gift vouchers for any amount which make a lovely gift for someone who loves flowers. For more information visit www.simplyflowerswiltshire.com or call 01249 819105.
A great stocking filler could be beautiful lip balm from Wiltshire-based Hive Originals. The company run by local businesswoman Claire Barker was set up after she took part in a beekeeping course in 2011 and got the bug for bees. She now runs a thriving business offering a range of skincare products all based around honey. Her lip balm – in various flavours – sells at £12 a pot and there’s free delivery on any order over £30. For more information visit www.hiveoriginals.co.uk or call 01380 562008.
For something really different for anyone who loves their pet – a item of paw print jewellery. Lisa Berry of Cheeky Little Prints, based in Swindon, runs a thriving business in silver keepsake jewellery and ceramics. Her sterling silver paw print items start at £79.99 (inc P&P) and anyone interested is sent an ink free kit to get the paw print and she then creates the jewellery the customer has chosen. To find out more visit www. cheekylittleprints.co.uk or call Lisa directly on 07792 835639. The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2017

Ballet dress designer appointed as official tutu-maker for prestigious ballet school
T
Latest news from DanceWear
ALENTED ballet dress designer Clare Boldon is delighted to be appointed as the official tutu maker at the Tring Park School School for Performing Arts. Clare, 43, who also runs the DanceWear shop in Chippenham, has been creating bespoke tutus and designing beautifully crafted dance costumes for five years. The former waste management engineer fell into her new career nine years ago thanks to her daughter Charlotte. Then just four, Charlotte began dancing and Clare turned her hand at making a dance dress – and discovered she was rather good at being a seamstress. Clare went on to create her first tutu four years ago. For the last two years she has been working full time designing bespoke ballet tutus and dance costumes. She opened the Dancewear shop in Chippenham a year ago and now sews from the premises. She said: “It was simply an enjoyable hobby at first. Yet it was something I discovered I could do with natural flair. I adore working with beading and diamantes to create something totally unique. Today it usually takes 70-80 hours to make a tutu from scratch. The skirts are made up of nine layers and I order the netting from a fabulous supplier in Scotland who sources it from Italy.” Clare’s daughter Charlotte, who is now 13, also attends the Tring Park School for Performing Arts. Rachel
Clare Boldon with one of her colourful tutus Rist, director of dance at the school had been looking for a tutu maker for some time to create each year group’s dance uniform. Rachel said: “Clare’s work is exceptional and our high expectations have been more than fulfilled. She has provided a high-quality, bespoke tutu at a competitive price and has been able to offer a personal fitting service for each girl throughout the creative process. “A tutu is the traditional costume for every ballerina throughout the history of ballet. Every girl is thrilled to be given an opportunity
to wear one. It’s a magical moment!” Clare said: “I’ve been making regular visits to the school to measure and fit the dancers. They’ve enjoyed the process and I have too. I recently delivered the fifth form students their royal blue coloured tutus. They loved them! “I adore seeing the girls’ faces when they put on their tutus. In that moment, all of the battling with the nets, needles and the sewing machine are worth it!” To find more about Clare and her designs visit the Dancetutus and DanceWear Facebook pages. This Christmas, Corsham- based, The Last Baguette Theatre Company, are bringing The Little Match Girl to venues near you. In the show we follow Alice, a match seller in Victorian London. We meet her in the morning and follow her throughout her day, as she encounters funny and zany characters on the vibrant streets of Victorian London. When Alice is cold, she strikes a match and the stage transforms. We enter the fantastic world of Alice's imagination, with talking turkeys, dancing rats, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and more! The Little Match Girl is a touching, madcap and heart-warming Christmas show for all the family. “It is a wonderful story” says director Susana Alcantud from Spain, “It goes right to the heart of what Christmas means.” In this magic, humorous and poignant show, The Last Baguette use visual storytelling, live music and puppetry to shine a light on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic winter tale. The script is written by T. A. Woodsmith, winner of the Sunday Times Playwriting Award. The Last Baguette specialise in creating touring work that can be performed in a wide variety of venues. 'We are performing in local libraries and village halls as well as theatres, because we believe it is important that everyone has access to high quality theatre, no matter your geographic or economic situation” says, Producer, Sidney Robb, The project is supported by Arts Council England, Corsham Town Council, The Wallace Curzon Charitable Trust, The Jack Lane Trust and Wiltshire Council through the Local Youth Networks. director. “I am delighted that local artiste Louise Lloyd, who performed for us so movingly as Delilah in Handel’s ‘Samson’ in March, will once again take centre-stage, this time with Scottish tenor Tom Morss.”

Flog It! visits Grittleton House by Fiona Scott
H
UNDREDS of Wiltshire and West country residents brought along their treasures and trinkets when the BBC team who produce the popular day-time show Flog It! came to the county in September. The production team took over the buildings and grounds of the Victorian manor house Grittleton House, Grittleton near Chippenham and welcomed members of the public to bring along items for valuation – and possible filming. Wiltshire did not disappoint.
Photos by Paul Stallard of www.candidpictures.co.uk
Until recently Grittleton House was a school but its history goes back much further. It was built in 1660 but was extended substantially in the 1800s after being purchased by a London solicitor Sir Joseph Neeld who had inherited a fortune from a rich uncle. The current owners took it over in the 1960s and today it’s a conference and wedding venue with substantial gardens and grounds.
54
On the Flog It! day, visitors enjoyed a warm autumn day so much of the filming took place outdoors in the gardens with on-screen experts Caroline Hawley, Mark Stacey and Michael Baggott. They were supported behind the scenes by a team of off-screen experts assisting with research and valuations. Among those being filmed were Robin and Heather Kent (photos centre left) who brought along a set of silver spoons and an amber bead

necklace. The couple from Easterton near Devizes, were thrilled to find their items did have a value and are expected to raise hundreds of pounds. Expert Caroline Hawley, who valued their amber necklace, said: “Amber is very popular at the moment. The necklace was in original condition and known as ‘butterscotch’ and will be attractive to buyers. Many of these ‘amber’ beads were copied, some are actually Bakelite or glass so experts will sometimes have to test to ensure they are the genuine article. These are genuine.”
Robin said any money raised would go towards a road trip the couple are taking down Route 66 in America next year. “I’m a keen biker and I have got a Harley. I’m a member of a local group and we’re going on a trip which will mean covering 300 miles a day. This will probably buy a tank of fuel or two en route!” Another couple Judy and Geoff Smith, from Chippenham (photo top right), brought in a selection of jewellery which belonged to their respective mothers. The collection which featured a set of a necklace, bracelet and earrings and several
separate rings are no longer worn and the couple felt it was time to move them on to new owners. Judy’s story about the purple set of jewels took listeners and the BBC team on the day back to colonial times – more on that story will be revealed when the programme is aired. Judy said: “I do love them but they are not my thing. It’s not the kind of thing or colour I would wear.” The main presenter of Flog It! is Paul Martin, who lives in Wiltshire with his family. He said he was thrilled to be back in his home county. He said: “I’m so pleased to have had an opportunity to share this beautiful part of the world with our viewers. We always receive a warm welcome whenever we come to Wiltshire and I’m thrilled plenty of people took the opportunity to bring along their items to share their stories with us.”

Paul spent the day meeting people with interesting items and a great story – even when they didn’t want to ‘flog it’ but just wanted more information. Those who were filmed joined the team again for the finale when their objects went under the hammer at Wessex Auction Rooms, near Chippenham on Saturday October 14. Their complete stories will be told when the 17th series of Flog It! is transmitted by the BBC next year. The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2017

‘The perfect Christmas turkey’ by Lydiard Turkeys
The perfect Christmas turkey
L
YDIARD TURKEYS always recommend using a meat thermometer when cooking your turkey. Putting a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the breast meat takes the guess work out of knowing when its done, this saves that moment when you pop it back in unnecessarily for another 10 minutes ‘just to be sure’ - we’ve all done it! High quality turkeys like Lydiard Turkeys should be cooked to 70c but others should be cooked to 75c. It essential to make sure your turkey is cooked but remember any additional time is simply drying out your meat. Top tips • Let your turkey reach room temperature before putting in the oven. • For a really moist turkey cook breast side down for the first half and then turn breast side up. The fat in the back of the turkey will naturally baste the breast meat. • Rest your turkey for at least 30 minutes before carving.

FOOD & DRINK
Those who eat together stay together by Wafaa Powell, Dancing Flavours It is true. Time spent preparing dishes for family and friends is known to be therapeutic, mainly because it touches on our primitive needs. Also, it is time where we are the focus of the task at hand. We chop, dice, squeeze and stir producing sounds and scents that tickle our senses. And at the end there is a sense of creation of something so beautiful that we consume in minutes. Food is at the heart of every gathering. It opens the channels of communication between people gathered around it - be it family, friends or colleagues. Preparing food together and sharing it softens our inhibitions and helps us connect better. Let me take the hassle of catering away from your celebration so you can sit back and enjoy the company of your guests. And if the occasion and mood allows it, I’m always willing to give you the chance to experience Belly dancing. After all, my motto is ‘I fill the belly and wobble it’. I’m a great believer in honest food using fresh ingredients, local when possible, put together in a simple way to prepare tasty and healthy recipes to share and enjoy. The benefits of that are for the body and soul. Lebanese recipes are the culmination of years of history and mixed cultures and are full of herb and spice aromas. No hot spices to cover the flavours of what you are eating. It is unheard of to visit a Lebanese home and not be offered food, fruits or nuts. If you’d like to experience the Lebanese hospitality, which is always based around food, book yourself on my Lebanese evening at Fussels Fine Food on the 30th November. See my website for details. An ideal gift for Christmas and birthdays, my book ‘Dancing Flavours’ is full of Lebanese vegetarian recipes that are easy to follow, fast to prepare and guaranteed to fill your belly and satisfy your taste buds. I also suggest what meat you can use with some dishes. My book is not in shops. You only can buy it from me - email me and I will post it to you. A cookery class with me will give you recipes to learn and enjoy plus enough information and tips to make you feel the pleasures of an exotic holiday without the travel! 62

Pay attention to your thyroid Helen Adams, founder of Wiltshire’s Oakmead Clinic often helps people who have problems related to their thyroid – even if that’s not the reason they’ve come to her for advice and support.
a GP is looking for disease and for many people their thyroid problem may not be at that level yet. However it may be sufficiently out of balance to cause problems.”
She said: “Problems with the thyroid often go undiagnosed and can build up over a long period of time. When symptoms get so bad, someone goes to their GP it can sometimes be too late to affect significant change so I urge anyone with any of the problems below to seek advice as early as possible.”
“I’m looking for imbalance – which ultimately can lead up to disease in the future. I will try to look at how we can work to reverse those effects before it’s too late.”
Helen helps people look at these lower level underlying symptoms which may indicate a thyroid issue.
Signs the thyroid may be over active include: • Feeling hot all of the time • excessive sweating, • an inability to complete tasks no off switch • weight loss no matter how much you eat • fatigue – really tired but just unable to switch off “On basis of that GP test, a patient may be told there is a problem and be put on medication. However 64
“Selenium helps the thyroid work better. Three a day could make a difference. One of the key things in the food intolerance test I’m able to do is to see if gluten is an issue and then remove that from the diet, always providing alternatives so that the diet doesn’t become restricted. “With an over active thyroid it can be a question of not eating certain foods and some life-style changes. For example meditation can calm the body down.
The thyroid is often called the ‘Butterfly Gland’ and it controls your metabolism – or in other words it controls how fast your ‘engine’ revs. Some people wonder if they have a problem related to the thyroid and a GP will do a test to discover if there is a problem with it being underactive or over active. Signs the thyroid may be underactive include: • weight gain that you can’t lose • a hump on the upper back • the loss of the outer third of eyebrows • feeling cold all year round even in hot summer • thinning hair • strong fatigue, you just cannot get going.
There are actions which can be taken to support and balance the thyroid and it could be something as simple as eating Brazil nuts which are rich in selenium for an underactive thyroid.
Food intolerances can also indicate the body is overactive on the immune front. When partially broken-down foods get into the wrong place in the inside of the body, the immune system is alerted and mounts an attack. This can be a problem if the food happens to be gluten, as gluten looks very like thyroid tissue to your immune system. Your own immune system then attacks your thyroid, and you have the start of an auto-immune disorder. If a client has these problems, Helen will offer a privately funded test which is more detailed than the one provided on the NHS. She said: “Catching thyroid problems early on means we can deal with the issues that caused them before they ever get to being a disease.”
NOVEMER 2017 The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2017
“With this condition you should avoid eating foods such as kelp (seaweed) and chlorella – it’s algae and it’s found in small tablets in health food stores often taken for de-toxing. The latter is very supportive in that it has all the benefits of the sun on the plants but it’s not good for an overactive thyroid.” When the thyroid is diseased there is no option but to have medication for the rest of your life for an underactive thyroid and radiation or surgery will be offered for an overactive thyroid. Helen said: “Anybody who has any concerns should see their GP to reassure them but a lot can be done before problems get to that level of disease.”

HEALTH & BEAUTY
10 tips to look younger using
Colour and Style
1
Make sure you’re wearing colours in the shades that really suit you, your WOW colours! Wearing the wrong shades will make you look tired, run-down and much older. Wearing shades that suit you will mean that your skin looks radiant, bright and therefore younger. Remember that there are many different shades of each colour - not all blues are the same and finding the ones that harmonize with your natural colouring can make the difference between you looking “OK” or absolutely fabulous!
3
Once you know your palette of colours, creating great colour combinations is simple e.g. summer and autumn palettes create younger looks with colours which blend and harmonise with each other e.g. for summers try wearing different shades in the plum / amethyst family together and for Autumns try moss, olive and lime greens together. Winter and Spring palettes look wonderful in high contrast looks from their palettes to create a more youthful appearance. Winters could try adding Chinese Blue to standard Navy and White and Springs could add a youthful splash to their look with this seasons on trend true red teamed with their Neutrals.
4
You may love an outfit on someone else but it might not suit you. Know who you are. If you like a bit of drama think asymmetric patterns and statement dressing to ensure visibility. Classic dressers feel good in elegant, timeless clothes. Know your style personality and you will feel more youthful and energised as you will look more authentic in your clothes.
2
Red is the hottest colour of the season and primary red is the only colour that suits everyone. After that you need to know if you are better in warm or cool shades and soft or bright, this will tell you which season you belong to. Different seasons have different reds in their colour palette. Summers suit cherry and coral red, autumns glow in rust or brick reds, winters shine in scarlet and carmine, and springs look gorgeous in geranium and poppy red. Team red with a neutral such as grey, navy, black, cream, beige, tan or white depending on your season to look effortlessly stylish.
68
5
Wear the right hemline – whether that is a maxi, midcalf, knee-length or for the lucky few, above the knee. It can surprisingly make or break an outfit as the wrong hemline can either be inappropriate and unattractive, or drab and frumpy. Different people suit different hemlines and this is not solely determined by your height but by the rebalancing of the natural proportions of your body. Your personality will also have something to say about your best skirt length.
6
Patterns can add interest to an outfit and really flatter different body shapes regardless of your age. Just be sure you know if you are a floral or graphics person for example.
The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2017
7 8
Bootcut jeans will balancecurvy bodies and if you don’t like your mid-section so much then try slim leg jeans with a lowslung belt. Use confidence to antiage your wardrobe! Ooze confidence and focus on your best assets by drawing attention to them. If you have a lovely waist, then emphasise that with a beautiful, flattering statement belt. Or if you have lovely long legs then try some skinny jeans to elongate those great legs even more!
9
Use accessories to make a statement in your outfit – try a scarf or a bright coloured clutch bag in this season’s ontrend bright red or one of your wow colours. This will make all the difference between a drab outfit and a sensational one. Buy jewellery that has several of your wow colours in the piece to add a really exciting focal point to your look.
10
Unflattering trends won’t do you any favours. Aim for sensational and stylish instead. Look good to feel good. Revitalise and revalue yourself through colour and style. Karen Hayter is your local House of Colour Stylist based in Corsham. “I love helping clients to find the most amazing version of themselves. Looking your best isn’t reserved for the rich and famous. Everyone can use colour and style to enhance their own natural colouring, body shape and personality.” Karen offers small friendly classes in her home studio. RUNNING & FITNESS COACH
Sticking with It by Verity Wright, www.runverity.com
R
UNNING can sometimes be a difficult journey and one of the things that we must accept as runners, regardless of where you are on your journey, is that at times running can be hard, there will be ups and downs in your training, you can’t feel fantastic with every run that you do and you can’t always achieve a PB in every race that you run. You will experience a “plateau” where it just seems impossible to improve on your times and you may experience such negativity that you simply can’t summon up the energy to get out of the front door and what can make this worse is watching everyone else’s success displayed all over social media. How do you stick with it when it becomes hard? Ups and downs are all natural and part of the journey to progression so try not to be too down about it, lapses are normal so the trick is to make sure they don’t become anything more serious, you don’t want to end up giving up completely. In my experience, one of the main reasons that people drop out of running is because they don’t think/feel that they are good enough and this can be because they
TOP TIPS
• Sort your running clothes out - donate or throw away kit that you haven’t worn for 3 months and wear the kit that makes you feel good. • Do a base line assessment of where you are right now, this may be a parkrun; don ’t kill yourself getting around, but run comfortably, finis h and record it. What would you like to achieve now and how do you get there? • How stressed are you? The bod y can only cope with a certain amount of stress, so don’t expect it to perform if you are experiencin g stress at home and work. Don’t underestimate how much stress can affect your running. Make sure you are getting enough sleep and rest; rest day s are all part of the training plan
don’t get the results that they hoped for. The amazing transformation that people experience when they first learn to run, (do you remember going from 1 minute to running a full 10 mins within just a few weeks?) can have a profound effect on how they feel when the results don’t come as quickly or as often. This could be for several reasons, maybe the results that were expected were unrealistic; we are surrounded by running forums where people share their successes and achievements, the medals, the t-shirts, the glory - they make it look easy. This can lead to comparison with others as it makes us question ‘what am I doing wrong’? when the usual 3-mile route hurts like hell. No Pace Variety We tend to do most of our training at the same pace. Sometimes you need to get out of your comfort zone, use your next run to do a bit of fartlek training, this will help you feel a faster pace in a non-race situation. You can walk, run and then sprint between trees, lampposts, benches, you decide the distance and you will experience a different pace over a short period of time and it will make your run more interesting as well as it being good fun.

Set within 100 acres of private farmland, the kennels, cattery and grooming salon boast magnificent facilities in an idyllic rural setting. Dogs enjoy a room with a view with safe and varied exercise whereas cats lounge sumptuously in their three tiered accommodation, resting in luxurious handmade four poster beds. After some updating of the existing kennels, Camilla Harris is the next generation to take on the family business, having previously worked in the kennels and as an animal lover herself. “Having grown up on the farm, I’m really thrilled to be taking the business forward and have some exciting plans for the future,” says Camilla.

Ethylene Glycol Poisoning Dr Emma Bailey BVSc MRCVS
www.georgevetgroup.co.uk The George Veterinary Hospital, Malmesbury 01666 823165 The George Veterinary Group, Royal Wootton Bassett 01793 852458 It won’t be too long before we’ll experience more frequent cold and frosty mornings with iced-up cars, so it’s a timely opportunity to discuss the dangers of ethylene glycol. It’s a chemical that is widely used in many of the products we purchase in order to de-ice our vehicles. It’s not just used as antifreeze in car screen washes but can also be found in hydraulic brake fluid and radiator coolant. Many of you will know that, if ingested, ethylene glycol (also known as ethanediol) is extremely toxic to dogs, cats and humans, even in very small amounts. The sweet taste of the chemical means animals will drink it willingly from puddles, or lick it off their feet after walking under a leaking car. Most poisonings occur in the winter when antifreeze is widely used or in the spring when radiators are drained. However, antifreeze containing ethylene glycol may be lying around in sheds and garages throughout the year. It’s important that you ensure containers are placed out of reach with the screw top tightened, and remember to check for any spillages under the vehicle when topping up the windscreen wash.
How will you know if your pet has been poisoned? Stage 1: Initial signs occur between 30 minutes – 12 hours after ingestion of the poison. Signs can be subtle, and may include neurological signs such as lack of coordination of movement, salivation, weakness, convulsions and vomiting. These signals may be appear to improve but you may also notice your pet is unwilling to eat by the next day. Stages 2 and 3: These signs often present anywhere between 12-24 hours after ingestion and include more obvious indicators such as breathing difficulties and convulsions. Your pet may be very lethargic, depressed and may slip into a coma. What should you do if you think your pet may have been poisoned? Antifreeze has extremely toxic effects, mainly on the kidneys. It is therefore vital that your pet is taken to your vet as soon as possible so that the antidote and supportive therapy can be given. If you witness your pet drinking antifreeze (more likely in dogs than in cats), then take them to your vet straight away. The sooner we see them the better the prognosis; although sadly, the prognosis is still guarded. Please get in touch with us should you have any questions. We are here for your pets whenever you need us and always ready to see you and your pets 24 hours a day for any concerns or emergencies.

AUTO-BIOGRAPHIES
SEAT Leon FR 2017 By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist - tweeting @carwriteups I’VE just spent seven days behind the wheel of the newest Leon – the three or five-door hatchback from Spanish automaker, SEAT. The contemporary model isn’t ground-breaking in looks – more progressive – and that is no bad thing. After all, why take a scalpel to an already fetching face? The Leon’s cousin is the VW Golf – and that, too, has been fine-tuned of late. The Spaniard is better looking than the German, but then beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. It’s less pricey to purchase, as well. I drove the FR Technology five-door variant, equipped with a 1.4 TSI 150 petrol unit. What’s different? Well, the Leon’s lights and grille have been given a slightly sharper look, but you’d have to really squint to notice. Then the FR model has been given full LED headlights, and its twin tailpipes denote that it has more spirit than the Leon’s below it.
The hatchback’s six-speed manual transmission is easy-going and meticulous in finding the correct gears. The steering is nicely responsive, too. Might stems from the 1.4 petrol turbo powerplant – a smart unit that locks off half the cylinders, which helps conserve fuel. The Leon, in FR guise, is not a hot-hatch, but it’s a warm hatchback, with zero to 62mph realisable in 8.0 seconds. Additionally, due to that cylinder shut-off ingenuity, you can squeeze 57.6mpg out of the tank.
The Leon FR Technology’s strength is tallied with good handling, and the SEAT adheres to apexes like epoxy resin. This is due to the FR’s 17-inch alloys and dropped suspension. The only disadvantage is the hard ride, which is perceptible on pitted road surfaces. Luckily, well-padded seats help make up for the car’s rigidity, and they’re fantastic at keeping you supported when entering and exiting tight bends.
The SEAT Leon’s cabin is welljudged, with ample room in the front and rear. Natty touches, for example: piano black trim, a touchscreen system and an electric handbrake, make the car’s interior feel chicer than the preceding model’s. The touchscreen tabletesque media system kicks most of the buttons that used to be in the Leon to the kerb. This tidies the instrument panel up no end. Regrettably, regularly having to hunt for a function on the touchscreen can prove a little disrupting at times. The FR gets surplus kit packed into it as well, comprising: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; sat-nav; rear parking sensors; dual-zone climate control and cruise control. Furthermore, the boot is more than adequate, with a load capacity of 380 litres. It’s not the largest, but it equals the Golf ’s – and it trounces the popular Ford Focus’ boot, which only offers 316 litres. So, yes, there is far more to the new SEAT Leon than its looks. It’s unquestionably less conformist than a Volkswagen Golf or a ubiquitous Ford Focus, and you happen to get a lot of motor for your money. Also, the 1.4 TSI 150 powerplant offers more ‘oomph’ than lesser petrolpropelled Leons. Plus, it’s quicker and less costly to buy than the 150ps diesel version.

Lighten the load of building work with Tiger Plant Are you planning to work on your garden or have some building work done over the winter? Many homeowners seek to reduce costs on home projects like these by doing some preparatory work themselves. Alternatively you may be using a builder or landscape gardener who needs to hire in machinery to ensure the job runs smoothly and on time. As the nights draw in the need to work hard and get the hard labour out of the way before it gets dark becomes greater. Wiltshire-based plant hire company Tiger Plant can help make that kind of work easier and, more importantly, quicker both for homeowners and domestic builders, landscape gardeners or contractors. The team at Tiger Plant – which has an office in Swindon and a storage unit in North Wiltshire – can advise any homeowner on the type of equipment which can help them with any heavy domestic project. The team can hire diggers, dumpers, excavators, rollers, cranes and forklifts – large and small. The size of the machine will depend on: • access restrictions to the property, garden or site. • the type of job. • the requirements of the job which may not be obvious to the untrained eye. For example a microdigger is small and easy to operate and can be hired for a weekend. The team can also hire out a tracked barrow which can carry up to half a ton of material making transporting earth or debris much easier. For those undertaking projects at home who are not confident about operating a mini digger themselves – a trained operator can be hired in to help for a day to move the job along – though higher costs will apply to cover their time. To discuss any job – large or small, domestic or commercial, feel free to get in touch by calling 01793 886444 or emailing info@tigerplant.co.uk 84
We’re Hiring! We are looking for an experienced hire desk controller to assist in the running of our Swindon office, near J16 of the M4. We need a team member to help organise the logistics of the hire fleet and our drivers. You’ll need: • Knowledge of different types of plant including; diggers, dumpers, forklifts and accessories. • An ability to think on your feet and solve problems • A customer focused attitude • A desire to develop your career Tiger Plant has a small and incredibly focused team. Due to our size we can afford to be flexible and often solve problems bigger hire companies cannot. Although the job is demanding, the rewards are fantastic and will NOT be limited to a basic salary. If you feel you fit the bill please send your CV to info@tigerplant.co.uk

National Tree Week
N
25th November - 3rd December
OVEMBER 25TH marks the start of National Tree Week, which in turn marks the start of treeplanting season. Considering that most of us in the UK have fairly small plots we do love our trees. The trouble is we’re not always terribly good at choosing them. How many times have you driven through a housing estate and observed an enormous weeping willow or an enormous pine tree completely obscuring a front garden. It can be tricky deciding what sort of tree to plant on a small, suburban plot but there are plenty of candidates. Generally trees up to 8-10m are considered suitable. The best urban trees offer yearround interest. Varieties of Acer Palmatum are rather lovely. They are elegant trees which have attractive green or purple foliage and colour beautifully in the winter. For my money Amalanchier Lamarckii is about as hardworking a tree as you’ll come across. During March and April it produces a frothy show of white flowers, then in June these are replaced by attractive deep purple, and supposedly edible - though I’ve never tried them - fruits. Then, when Autumn arrives the tree pulls out all the stops and bursts into fiery colour. If you only
86
have room for one tree then an Amelanchier won’t let you down. Another hard worker is Sorbus hupehensis var. obtusa. This tree has a pretty shape and is attractive throughout the year. In the late spring it is covered in white blossom which is followed by masses of dark pink berries. The blue-green leaves turn red in the autumn. It’s just my opinion of course but without at least one tree, a garden can seem flat and a little dull. Trees provide structure and height but are also a haven for birds and insects, which in turn add colour and life. Why not plant a tree during this week. Our guide has some helpful tips.
by Rachael Leverton
HOW TO PLANT A TREE Dig a hole at least twice the size of the root ball. Make up a mixture of half compost and half soil from the hole. Put a few inches of this mix at the bottom of the hole. Trees need support so drive a support stake into the hole at one edge. This needs to be done before the tree is planted or you risk damaging the roots. Tip the tree from its container and loosen the roots a little. Place it into the hole and fill in with the soil and compost mixture. Firm it down with your heel. Use proper straps to secure the tree to the post. Water well!

• You can now start to harvest your parsnips after the first frosts when their flavour will have sweetened. • Tidy up your polytunnel or greenhouse and wash up pots and seed trays before you need them again in the spring.

• Prune pear and apple trees any time from now until February. • Apply greasebands to the trunks of fruit trees to stop female winter moths climbing the trunks and laying eggs in the branches. • Aerate your lawn before winter sets in - you can use a garden fork to do this if your lawn and fitness permits! • Make sure any bird feeders and tables are kept topped up as the weather gets colder.
HAVE A GO
!
Take a look around you r garden and whilst it is looking a lit tle more sparse, deci de if there are any plan ts that don’t make you h appy. Dig them up to create some space for yo ur next batch of pla nting and pop someth ing time that fills in next yo more joy. It’s u with easier to yank up a pla nt when it looks a little miserable than when it is in bloom, after full all!
PLANT OF THE MONTH
Garlic
Garlic is ideally suited to November planting and bulbs will grow in cooler temperatures ready for harvest in June and July. Garlic prefers a full sun location in welldrained compost rich soil either in borders or containers. Bulbs should be split into individual cloves and planted pointed end up about 1 inch below soil surface – this can be appealing to birds so be sure to cover with netting to avoid this in the early stages. Flowers may form on the garlic plants -these can be removed or remain as they won’t affect bulb growth. When harvesting, wait until the leaves have started to turn yellow but don’t leave bulbs in the ground too long after this or else they may rot when stored. Once the bulbs are dry they can be stored for up to 3 months.

BOOKS
A Good Read
Plays About Britain by Craig Taylor
......................................................................................... How often do you hear someone complain that they never have time to read? Too often? Or are you guilty of this yourself? If so, Craig Taylor’s superb book is a godsend. The title is more or less an accurate description of the contents – although there are slightly fewer than a million of Taylor’s carefully crafted snapshots of British life: ‘dramatic haikus’, perhaps, as Richard Eyre suggests in his introduction. The format of each play is the same: a brief sentence to set the scene, then the dialogue takes over. The longest runs to three or four pages, the shortest to one sentence. A range of scenes is covered – from two women in a queue at a Surrey bank, to a farmer in Kent speaking on his mobile phone from a tractor, to a late night on Newcastle Quayside. The characters are diverse too – young and old, drunk and sober, flippant and serious. However, it is the perfectly observed sharpness of speech that makes this book stand out. At first, you could believe that Taylor has merely been in the right place at the right time and recorded everything that he heard. Lines like ‘I once took Diana Rigg’s coat – in her pocket was a packet of Polos. That’s an elegant mint’ ! And ‘There’s more to it all. More than Swansea,’ sound so authentic
Crossword & Sudoku solution page 80
that you believe in the speakers and their lives, however brief and insignificant their conversations seem to be. Some of the plays rely on a growing sense of unease - the nervous customer in the barber’s shop: others are out and out funny - two Wonder Women fighting in the street. Every ending is well judged and either rounds off the play with a ‘reveal’ or a cliff-hanger – always showing, never telling. Ideal for reading in short bursts or longer chunks – well worth a look.
The Complete Tales and Poems of Winnie-the-Pooh by AA Milne
......................................................................................... The recently released film ‘Goodbye Christopher Robin’ painted a less-than-rosy picture of the dysfunctional upper class Milne family. Yet the stories are still compellingly charming from the opening lines, ‘Here is Edward Bear, coming downstairs now, bump, bump, bump, on the back of his head, behind Christopher Robin.’ Milne may have been a traumatised war veteran but his storytelling has so much warmth and depth. At times the tales are laugh out loud funny – Rabbit in particular makes me giggle every time he replies to a knock at the door – and children will quickly read along with you, even if some of the sentence structure and vocabulary is complex. Every child deserves to have this book read aloud to them at least once before they are six and I bet you anything you will be asked for it again, and again. The word classic is sometimes used lightly: here, it is truly deserved.

Removals Pete Monk established the removals business some 43 years ago. With a previous life in the RAF Pete established the business in a part time capacity until launching full time into Quickmove Wiltshire. He joined the Britannia Group later giving the business access to International Shipping and increasing the capacity of the business with a well known national brand. The acquisition keeps all 14 staff who have enjoyed loyal service with some serving the business for over 25 years. ‘’One thing that was evident right from our initial dealings was the dedication of all the Britannia team from drivers to removers to all the internal teams’’ reports Nick Clarke (Projects Director). Britannia is the UK’s largest moving group, it has helped tens of thousands of families and businesses move home and office throughout the uK for 30 years. ‘’The Britannia Movers brand is well known in the industry for quality residential removals and will boost our existing commercial mover’s infrastructure with a fleet of vehicles and staff well versed in all things removal!’’ reports Nick For further information on Self Storage, Removals or Office Furniture Showroom please contact Nick Clarke on 01249 819419 for a visit to our sites.
