Towpath raised by Trust volunteers Hardworking volunteers have completed the latest improvements to a restored stretch of canal between Chippenham and Lacock. The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust has finished raising a section of towpath which dropped when the waterway was abandoned more than a century ago. Supported by a grant of £4,685 from Chippenham Area Board, a team of volunteers spent more than a week transporting several tons of soil and hardcore to the site near Double Bridge. The 150-metres of affected towpath have now been levelled off and pipes have been installed to improve drainage. The project has also allowed the water-level to be raised to improve access along the canal for the charity’s workboat. The work was carried out by the charity’s Melksham, Chippenham & Calne branch. Branch chairman Dave Maloney said: “The towpath is a very popular route for walkers and cyclists to enjoy the open countryside, and many people use it to travel between Chippenham and Lacock. “However, there was a short distance where the period of dereliction had resulted in it sinking slightly due to poor drainage, so we wanted to raise it back to its original height in order to improve access for everyone. “The main challenge was keeping the towpath open while we worked, but people were very understanding of any brief delays and we even managed to recruit a few more members!” The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust is restoring the former waterway which once linked the Kennet & Avon Canal near Melksham to the Thames & Severn Canal near Cricklade and the River Thames near Abingdon, linking Chippenham, Calne and Swindon. The stretch between Chippenham and Lacock already includes a significant length which has been excavated and refilled with water, and includes a restored bridge, spillweir and mooring points, as well as benches, birdboxes and information boards. 6

Canal Trust workparty organiser Ray Canter and fellow volunteer Keith Vickery beside the raised towpath Longer-term, the aim is to extend the line to Melksham where a planning application has already been submitted to create a new junction with the K&A at Semington and then bring the canal along the River Avon through the town centre before reconnecting with the historic route south of Lacock. Dave added: “The latest improvements are further evidence of the continuing progress of the restoration campaign and the support of the local community. “Whenever we have a workparty, passers-by regularly praise us for our achievements and wish us well for the future. “We would love to welcome more volunteers though. There are lots of roles to choose from including fundraising and event management, but we’d particularly welcome people who are interested in the physical aspects such as digging, bricklaying and grasscutting. “It’s a great way to enjoy the fresh air and make new friends.” Visit www.melkshamwaterway.org.uk or www.wbct.org.uk

Calne Deanery Confirmation Service The Bishop of Ramsbury, The Right Reverend Dr Edward Condry, recently confirmed seventeen candidates, at St Mary the virgin Parish Church in Calne. This special and uplifting service was led by the Team Rector, the Rev Bob Kenway, and supported by the fantastic choir. One of the candidates was Chloe Thornton, 10, who goes to Holy Trinity Church of England Academy School in Calne. “We went to evening classes for about 6 weeks” said Chloe. “We read stories like Jesus’s journey to Emmaus and him coming back to life. We compared pictures from the stories and talked about opinions and what they meant. we also talked about the Passover feast and we had a Passover party” she added. “We had party food but there wasn’t any jelly or ice cream. We had horseradish sauce!” Another candidate was Poppy Gibson, 11. “It felt really special” said Poppy. “I felt at home and with friends, I just want to be a part of the Church.” Issac Vines, 10, added “I wanted to do the next step by myself without my parents.” Jo Shore, 11, said “We’re carrying on classes after today, it’s really exciting.”

Calne Men’s Shed An update

Our widely publicised inaugural meeting on May 2 attracted almost 40 people interested to discuss the structures and aims of the proposed Men's Shed in Calne. As a result we have number of of completed information /membership forms which indicates that men [and some women] are keen to get the project here up and running. Following discussions with the Repair Academy run by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust we are able to make use of part of their building in Porte Marsh road. There is a certain amount of admin work to complete before we can actually move in but already donations of tools and work benches have been received. enquiries@calnemensshed.org

Middlewick House Open Gardens

The gardens at Middlewick House in Corsham, formerly the home of HRH The Duchess of Cornwall and now home to Nick Mason of Pink Floyd fame and his wife, actress Annette Lynton Mason, are to be opened on Saturday 10 June and Sunday 11 June 2017 from 11am to 4.30pm in aid of two local charities. This will be the fourth year running that Nick and Annette have opened their gardens to raise money for local charities. This year’s proceeds will be split between The Wiltshire Bobby Van Trust (www.wiltshirebobbyvan. org.uk) and Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s Airbase Appeal (www.wiltshireairbaseappeal.co.uk). Visitors will be able to wander around their beautiful gardens and menagerie of animals. Alan Dun, one of Bath’s leading fine art sculptors, will be showing a selection of his pieces. There will also be a range of stalls to browse from plants to gifts. Refreshments will be available with a selection of cakes on offer as well as a barbeque. Entry is £7, children under 12 years – free. Nick Mason said: “Annette and I are really looking forward to opening our garden again – it’s a really great way of supporting two of our favourite and enormously worthy local charities. Our visitors seem to enjoy the experience and it gives us a really good excuse to tidy the garden and polish the odd car!” Jennie Shaw, Director of The Wiltshire Bobby Van Trust, said: “This will be the fourth year Mr and Mrs Mason have supported local charities, they have raised over £60,000. Vital funds for vital charities. It’s a super weekend which thousands of people have attended, I do hope you can join us.” Cheryl Johnson, Head of Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s Airbase Appeal, said: “We are so grateful to Nick and Annette Mason for supporting Wiltshire Air Ambulance. Our Airbase Appeal is raising the remaining £1.25 million needed to complete the building and equipping of our new airbase at Semington, near Melksham. Funds raised at the open gardens event will enable us to save lives for many more years to come, operating from our new airbase.” Nick and Annette Mason. Photo: www.candidpictures.co.uk

IBP Recruitment, an Award-Winning Business Friday 5th May, saw IBP Recruitment attend the Wiltshire Business Awards, hosted by Center Parcs, Longleat along with other finalists from across the county.

Jenny Kane and Alison Knight

IBP were in the Start-Up Business of the year category, and the team were on tenterhooks as the winners were read out, as they readied for the top three places to be announced. In such a strong, diverse category it was going to be close.

Wiltshire authors write a new chapter

The table erupted when IBP were announced winning 3rd place, such an achievement for a team who 18 Months ago, consisted of one person in a serviced office.

Two authors from Wiltshire have started a new venture to encourage more people to have a go at creative writing. Jenny Kane and Alison Knight have begun trading as Imagine Creative Writing Workshops and are offering workshops, courses and talks on the craft of writing. The two writers met through the Romantic Novelists’ Association and between them write in a variety of genres including contemporary women’s fiction, historical crime, erotic romance, young adult time-slip adventures, children’s picture books, radio drama and memoir.

Managing Director, Craig Roberts commented, “It was a fantastic evening, and it was really satisfying to spend the night with the team, as we reflected on our development as a company. We were thrilled to win 3rd place, and can’t wait to take part next year. It’s great to be recognised for our professionalism and customer service values.” For now, it’s back to the office for IBP to work on placing Candidates, helping new and existing Clients throughout Wiltshire, and as always, being Inspired by People. 01249 476 477 | contact@ibprecruitment.co.uk www.ibprecruitment.co.uk

Jenny Kane will be part of a panel of romance authors appearing at the Yelde Hall at 7pm on Friday 30 June as part of the Chippfest Arts Festival. Tickets £3, available on the door. On Saturday 1 July, the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre in Cocklebury Road, Chippenham will host an Imagine workshop called ‘So you want to be a romance writer…’ The workshop is suitable for beginners and experienced writers, and will take you through the requirements of the genre and the expectations of the reader, and look at the wide range of possibilities there are for romance writers to find their voice and tell their unique romantic stories. It runs from 1pm-4pm. Tickets cost £25 and are available from the History Centre, telephone: 01249 705500. For people who are looking for regular writing workshops, Imagine have just secured their first venue – the awardwinning Hazelwood Spa in Sutton Benger. ‘We’re so excited about working with Imagine Creative Writing Workshops,’ said Sam Francome, Creative Director at Hazelwood. ‘Imagine@Hazelwood sessions will take place from 3-5pm on the second Saturday of every month, starting from 10th June. We believe that offering our clients the chance to explore their imagination and express themselves through creative writing will enhance well-being in much the same way that having a soothing massage or other beauty treatment can boost self-esteem and confidence providing nourishment for mind, body and spirit.’ Anyone interested in joining the sessions should call Hazelwood Spa on 01249 720964. What’s On

O

It’s showtime again!

N the weekend of 8/9th July, the Friends of the Museum will be hosting their annual road run and show. On Saturday 8th, starting from the Museum at 4 o’clock, there will be a Treasure Hunt through the beautiful Wilshire countryside. Then on Sunday 9th, its show day and if past years are anything to go by, we can expect more than 200 classic vehicles and their proud owners. This year we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Ford Cortina 1600E, an iconic car of its time, many of which, like the one shown, are still in existence.

owners including a cavalcade of over 40 cars from the Moles Mini Club, plus vehicles from the Colerne Classic Car Club and the Wiltshire Jaguar Enthusiast Club.

Anyone wishing to enter their classic car in this year’s event is invited to look for it on the Eventbrite website, which gives full instructions on the process. Those that do will gain free entry for themselves and one passenger, albeit there is a charge to enter the Museum. As well as the cars, there will be a variety of trade stands, a tearoom selling homemade cakes, the final chance to enter the prize draw for the Mazda MX5 and the Museum itself. All in all, a great day out.

Everyone involved with the Museum is a volunteer and without their support the Museum could not operate. If you would like to get involved, please feel free to contact me at foawmmsec@gmail.com. Alternatively, contact the Museum at the number below.

On Sunday 23rd April, it was National “Drive it Day”, which is an open invitation for anyone owning a classic car to, well, drive it! The Museum welcomed well over 100 classic cars on the day, which were a joy to behold. Most of them were from local

Regular readers may recall that I wrote about the full restoration of a Triumph Spitfire being undertaken by some of our volunteers. I am pleased, and very proud, to say that the car is now complete and resides in the sports car section of the Museum.

The Museum is open on Tuesdays to Sunday inclusive from 11am to 5pm, including bank holidays. There is plenty of free parking available on site and for larger groups who might like it, refreshments can be arranged if requested. For further information, please contact the Museum on 01249 813119 or visit its website which is www.atwellwilson.org.uk You are assured of a very warm welcome. Alan Hall

WOMAD Thursday 27 and Sunday 30 July Charlton Park, near Malmesbury

The world’s festival WOMAD UK is back for its thirty-fifth year as a vibrant, joyful and timely reminder that in a world where division and isolation are increasingly prominent, music can still bring people together from all around the globe, just as it did for 52,000 people at WOMAD Chile in March. As well as musicians from every imaginable background WOMAD will play host to its usual dizzying mix of art, dance, food, wellbeing, discussion and family activities, all taking place in the spirit of fun, diversity and originality that has made it an institution among summer festivals. WOMAD’s Global Festival Director Chris Smith said: “This is the perfect collection of artists to kick off WOMAD 2017. Some new faces and some old friends returning after a long absence, all of whom I’m certain will demonstrate the extent to which WOMAD still, after thirty-five years, has the power to surprise people and give them a musical experience they’ve never had before. There are brand new ways for festivalgoers to chill out in style at the WOMAD Spa and a nature-tastic theme of Earth,

30

Fire, Water and Air at this year’s World of Children, encouraging kids to get creative with everything from dance workshops to costume design to kids yoga. With more hours of live broadcasting than ever before at WOMAD, this year’s eleven hours on Radio 3 across the festival weekend will include the diverse range of artists performing on the BBC 3 Charlie Gillett Stage, plus interviews and performances from the Siam Tent and Open Air Stage. WOMAD highlights will be broadcast on World on 3 in the weeks after the festival. Radio 3’s exclusive backstage Session Tent returns to WOMAD this year, with intimate performances from a variety of festival artists from the BBC Radio 3 Charlie Gillett Stage and further afield captured on film for the Radio 3 website. Calne Alpha Calne Alpha are celebrating success this month with their record swim squad of 18 swimmers qualifying this year across multiple events at Youth and Age Group levels in the South West Regional Championships. Medals include 3 silvers, 1 bronze and over 15 final places against strong competition from across the region. For the younger ones (aged 8-13), success came from a squad of 15 swimmers from Calne Alpha competing in the SX3 Swimming Development Meet at the Link Centre in Swindon on 23rd April. For many of the younger swimmers it was their first competition away from their home pool, so great experience. The swimmers showed good race skills and were rewarded with many personal best times, medals and awards between the group. It was a tiring but enjoyable day for everyone. Calne Alpha ASC established in 1976 with the opening of Calne Leisure Centre is a small friendly swimming club, run and coached entirely by volunteers. Proud to have one of the most qualified and experienced coaching teams in Wiltshire, they are delivering programmes which include Academy swimming, Masters Fitness, Performance Pathway swimming and Synchronized swimming. Linked to two Network Clubs : Team Bath Swim Club and City of Bristol Aquatics Network, Calne are able to provide their talented swimmers a pathway into performance swimming alongside the home club programme and have swimmers regularly competing at County, Regional and National levels as well as open meets at all levels.

Top: Members of Calne Alpha Regional Squad 2017 Above: Calne Alpha SX3 squad As well as the swimming programme they have one of the West's most successful Synchronized Swimming club that has seen one of its members represent England in the England Talent Programme. Swimmers who are confident in the water and can swim at least one length of the 25m are welcome to come and try out. Enquiries via the website www.calneapha4.co.uk.

Calne War Memorial Restoration Fund by Paul Ellis, Treasurer, Calne War Memorial Restoration Fund In 2014 on the anniversary of the starting of the first world war, Calne Branch of the Royal British Legion considered what type of service and parade should take place in 2018 to remember the end of the first world war after 100 years. Immediately it was obvious the war memorial was in a poor state of repair as little maintenance work had been carried out over the years. It was decided that the branch should research a project to raise funds and obtain quotes for restoration. The branch immediately decided to start a Restoration Fund and held fund raising functions, sent letters to local organisations and located blue collection boxes around the town in shops and businesses for members of the public to donate. The War Memorial is the ‘Cross of Sacrifice’ by Sir Reginald Bloomfield which was also adopted by the Imperial War Graves Commission (IWGC) now the CWGC. The monument is of Portland Stone, it stands 19 feet high, is octagonal in shape, on one of these sides’ reads, “In grateful and abiding remembrance of the men who went from the parish of Calne to the Great War 1914 – 1918 and gave their lives in the cause of freedom and right.” The other seven sides are inscribed the names and initials in alphabetical order, nineteen per side giving a total of 133 names in total for the Great War. The memorial is approached by a path of Pennant stone also designed by Sir Reginald Bloomfield from the west door of the church, and goes around the memorials three Portland Stone steps. The memorial was manufactured by Messrs. Jenkins and Son of

34

Torquay, and assembled in 1921 by Messrs. Blackford and sons of Calne. Discussions for a War Memorial were started at a Calne Town Council meeting on 10th March 1919, and unveiled although not in its originally intended location in May 1921 by the Marquess of Lansdowne. In 1923, an act of parliament gave ownership of war memorials to council’s which were not owned by any one person or company. This act was amended to give authority to modify names and add subsequent wars and conflicts to the war memorials. Sometime after the Second World War the following was inscribed on the lower vertical sides, “Also in Memory of those who gave their lives in the war of 1939—1945” The 46 names of the men of Calne who died are inscribed upon it. Working in conjunction with Calne Town Council, the Salisbury Diocese, and the War Memorial commission it is the intention to restore the War Memorial by mid2018. We are activity raising funds as the cost of restoration could be in excess of £20,000. The people of Calne have been very generous and through the blue boxes, fund raising and donations the fund has raised over £7,000. There is a shortfall and we are applying to War Memorial commission for a grant and we have a pledge from the Town Council. Should you wish to make a donation or support the fund please call our Calne Branch phone number 01249 848128 and leave a message, a member of the fund committee will contact you. Alternatively look out for our blue collection boxes. “LEST WE FORGET” Thanks to Rod Rhodes RBL for history research.

Fun and challenging fundraising by businesses for Airbase Appeal A HEAD shave and walking challenges are among the innovative ways businesses are raising funds for Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s new airbase. Exception EMS, based in Calne, V12 Footwear, based in Chippenham, and Elm Workspace, based in Calne, are the latest businesses to join Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s 100 Club to fundraise for the charity’s new airbase at Semington, near Melksham. Each business that joins The 100 Club pledges to raise £10,000 for the charity’s Airbase Appeal. At Exception EMS, manufacturing associates Diane Benson and Kevin Parks bravely had their heads shaved and have so far raised over £1,000. The company, which is an electronics manufacturer, is planning other fundraising events including a charity ball. Jenny Goward, HR Director at Exception EMS, said: “We have supported Wiltshire Air Ambulance for many years now and our employees chose it as our charity to support this year, so becoming a member of The 100 Club was the next step. Diane and Kevin’s head shave was keenly supported by their colleagues and we are looking forward to organising other fun events. Photos - Top: Elm Workspace staff (l-r) Tony Bryant, Sales Executive, Amy Smith, Sales Adminstrator and Ian Powell, Commercial Director, who are among the staff planning to do the Race to the Stones event. “The work that Wiltshire Air Ambulance does is incredible and such a necessary emergency service within Wiltshire. The plans for the new airbase are very exciting and to have the team together in one place will have huge benefits.” At V12 Footwear, which designs and manufactures safety footwear for industries including oil, gas, construction, rail and agriculture, 15 members of staff are planning to walk the 13 miles from their headquarters in Chippenham to the new airbase site in Semington on 26 May - wearing V12 safety boots. Tom Turner, Business Development Director at V12, said: “Walking in V12 safety boots will really put their comfort to the test! Wiltshire Air Ambulance is a charity that is very close to the hearts of V12 staff for personal reasons, but also because it is a fantastic resource for the county’s residents and visitors. “We have the greatest respect for every single member of staff from the pilots and paramedics to those managing the operations, fundraising and marketing from the ground. Nobody knows if or when the Wiltshire Air Ambulance might affect their lives, but it is a great comfort to know that they are there and can get to emergencies quickly. “As well as becoming a member of the Wiltshire Air Ambulance 100 Club we have promised to keep WAA staff booted for a lifetime.” Amongst their fundraising for Wiltshire Air Ambulance, six staff at Elm Workspace, an office fit out and furniture company, are planning to walk 100km in the Race to the Stones event along The Ridgeway on 14 and 15 July finishing in Avebury. Ian Powell, Commercial Director at Elm Workspace, said: “This is the first time we have supported Wiltshire Air Ambulance and we chose to support them because it is an essential service to people living in, working,

visiting or travelling through the county. We all want to feel we have the best of chances at the worst of times and it is shown time and time again that Wiltshire Air Ambulance can be the difference between life and death in the most crucial minutes of an incident. “We have joined the charity’s 100 Club as we want to see security for this service and the new base is crucial for the future. A purpose-built facility will aid the efficiency of the service providing more space for the most up to date equipment and training.” Cheryl Johnson, Head of Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s Airbase Appeal, said: “The fundraising being undertaken by Exception EMS, V12 Footwear and Elm Workspace for our Airbase Appeal is inspiring and we’d like to thank them for joining The 100 Club. The funds they raise will go towards

completing the building and equipping of our new airbase, which will enable us to provide our essential helicopter emergency medical service for many years to come. “Our 100 Club members are undertaking different ways of fundraising for our Airbase Appeal and we’d love to hear from businesses who are interested in coming on board and helping us secure a better future for Wiltshire Air Ambulance. Businesses who join will receive exclusive benefits including recognition on a ‘roll of honour’ at the new airbase.” To find out a out the benefits of ecoming a member of The 100 Club go to wiltshireairbaseappeal.co.uk/ support-our-appeal/100club/ or email 100club@ wiltshireairambulance.co.uk

Work Begins On Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s New Airbase HER Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Mrs Sarah Rose Troughton, and The High Sheriff of Wiltshire, Lady Marland, joined Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s Charity Ambassadors and supporters on Friday 28 April 2017 to celebrate the start of construction work on the charity’s new airbase at Semington, near Melksham. At a ground breaking ceremony on the site of the new airbase at Outmarsh Farm, Mrs Troughton and Lady Marland joined Wiltshire Air Ambulance Chairman Chris Lear and Chief Executive David Philpott in cutting the first turf. The exciting milestone co-incides with the charity’s Airbase Appeal raising over £251,000, meaning that just under £1 million is needed to complete building and equipping the new airbase. Mrs Troughton said: “I was delighted to be part of the ground breaking ceremony for Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s new airbase which marks the next phase in the charity’s history. Wiltshire Air Ambulance has been saving lives for 27 years and this wonderful custom-built airbase will enable the charity to continue its sterling and important work. “Its central location of Semington means the helicopter can still reach all parts of the county in 11 minutes, as they have been able to from Devizes Police HQ. The charity still needs to raise further funds to finish the project. My grateful thanks

go to those who have generously contributed so far, and I would like to encourage further public support for this vital service in our county.” Chris Lear, Chairman of Wiltshire Air Ambulance, said: “We launched our major fundraising appeal for our new airbase just three months ago and the response has been excellent. Thanks to the generosity of individuals, community groups, schools, businesses and grant making trusts, we are well on the way to raising the £1.25 million we need to complete the building and equipping of the airbase. “Now that the building work is underway on the airbase it’s more important than ever to support the appeal and raise the remaining funds to enable us to secure the future of our lifesaving service. There are lots of ways that you can get involved. Have a look at our special website for ideas – www.wiltshireairbaseappeal. co.uk – or call the Charity Team on 01380 739453 or email hello@wiltshireairambulance.co.uk”. Construction of the new airbase is expected to take 45 weeks and Wiltshire Air Ambulance is anticipating moving into the new airbase in Spring 2018. What’s On

Natural path to happiness gets results Sunshine for the soul: 30 Days Wild benefits health and wellbeing

© Matthew Roberts

© Nick Upton

The impact of taking part in 30 Days Wild has been tracked by academics at the University of Derby. Their study found that people who did something ‘wild’ each day for a month, felt happier, healthier and more connected to nature. From walking barefoot in the park to feeding garden birds, all sorts of activities proved positive for people – with added benefits for the natural world too.

T

HIS June, it’s all about nature - for everybody, everywhere, every day with The Wildlife Trusts’ annual challenge: 30 Days Wild People will be encouraged to enjoy the nature on their doorstep, as well as the ‘great outdoors’, with inspiring ‘Random Acts of Wildness’: practical, fun and quirky ideas for connecting with the wild around us. Spend an evening star gazing, build a bughouse, become a stream sleuth, enjoy mindfulness in a meadow, or even sit in the garden, sipping a G&T and watch butterflies! People can spend a few minutes, or a few hours each day enjoying nature - how they do it is up to them.

This is important as it is happiness and connecting with nature that influence improvements in health. Our study also shows that those who benefitted most were younger adults and those who weren’t ‘nature lovers’.”

Apply for a free 30 Days Wild pack, download the phone app or look online for those inspirational Random Acts of Wildness. 30 Days Wild packs include a packet of wildflower seeds, activity sheets, a calendar to record adventures, stickers, and a poster. Schools will get a large deck of ‘Random Acts of Wildness’ cards for inspiring ideas. Sign up and share the fun of #30DaysWild on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Wildlife Trusts across the UK will be running wild events for all the family throughout June. Lucy McRobert at The Wildlife Trusts says: “Last year thousands of people carried out 1.8 million Random Acts of Wildness during 30 Days Wild. That’s 1.8 million precious moments that brought people closer to nature and enhanced their lives. The Wildlife Trusts aim to double that number this year – and we hope that the connections people make with the wild around them will ensure that it is better protected for the future too.” For more information visit: www.mywildlife.org.uk/ 30DaysWild/

© Matthew Roberts

And it’s official - a daily dose of nature, even in bite size chunks, is good for you.

Dr Miles Richardson, Director of Psychology, who led the study, said: “The impact of 30 Days Wild adds to the compelling argument for bringing nature into our everyday lives. Two months after taking part in 30 Days Wild, there was a 30 per cent increase in the number of people who reported their health as excellent. Last year’s results also show people’s happiness continued to improve after 30 Days Wild ended, which illustrates its sustained impact.

This year 30 Days Wild is revelling in the glory of traditional meadows which bloom with wildflowers throughout June. 'Unimproved' pastures and meadows with their characteristic wealth of wild plants and animals are rare and fragmented – occupying just 5% of the area that they occupied in 1945. Wiltshire Wildlife Trust has several beautiful meadow sites including Lower Moor Farm, Blakehill Farm and Coombe Bissett Down.

Health & Beauty

Run safely in Summer

Dress appropriately Loose-fitting clothes help take advantage of any breeze. Investigate techno fabrics which allow sweat to pass through them and evaporate, keeping your core temperature lower. Use sunglasses and waterproof sunscreen. A visor to protect your face is a good idea but not a tight-fitting hat because the head is wear we lose the most heat. Choose the right time Avoid midday and 3pm when the sun is at its strongest. If you’re training in a city air quality is best in the morning, and try to choose a route which provides a lot of shade. Keep hydrated Hydrate well about two hours before a run, even if you don’t feel thirsty. For shorter runs of less than 45 minutes, drink water throughout. For longer runs use drinks which help maintain electrolyte levels.

Start slower, stop sooner Start your run a bit slower than usual. Know when to stop, because heat-induced illness is serious. Signs to watch for are headaches, confusion, loss of muscle control, hot and cold flushes, clammy skin and an upset stomach. If you experience any of these, seek shade, a drink and transport home. Use waterways If possible try to choose a route that passes near water because it’s usually cooler and breezier which will help keep your core temperature down. You can make use of rivers, streams, a lake or the sea. If you can finish your run with a brief swim it’s a great way to cool down quickly.

Laughter is the best medicine by Tracey Anderson

WHERE is your nearest comedy club? Current research suggests it’s worth knowing where you can get a good laugh as it may improve your health. Laughter is like a good massage - A good belly laugh relaxes the muscles for up to 45 minutes. It lowers stress and wards off colds - Stress hormones take a toll on our bodies making it difficult for us to fight off illness. Studies suggest that laughing not only reduces levels of these hormones, it boosts the immune system. So dig out those old episodes of Father Ted or Dad’s Army! It increases pain tolerance - According to neuroscientist Robert Provine, pain reduction is one of the biggest benefits of laughter. Studies have proved that those who watch or experience comedic content are able to tolerate more pain, probably due to the release of hormones called endorphins. It’s good exercise - The body’s response to laughter is quite similar to the body’s response to exercise. After several seconds of laughter, your heart rate elevates. We don’t recommend that you lie about watching reruns of Seinfeld all day but as part of a healthy lifestyle comedy is a great addition. It’s a heart-friendly activity - Scientists at The University of Maryland determined that subjects with heart disease were 40 percent less likely to laugh in many situations compared to those without heart disease; and in fact were more prone to anger and hostility. I can’t say for certain that laughter really is the best medicine, but it certainly won’t hurt you to book a ticket to see your favourite comedian. Take a friend because research also suggests that we laugh even more when we are in the company of others, so you both get a double dose of healthy happiness. 50

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Oakmead Clinic N

UTRITIONAL THERAPIST Helen Adams left behind a successful global career in the financial services sector to follow her passion – helping others to live happy and healthy lives through good nutrition.

The 58 year old set up Oakmead Clinic after she told her personal story to her hairdresser who remarked she ought to turn her extensive knowledge into a business to help others. “I realised that was exactly what I should do,” Helen said and Oakmead Clinic, based in Chippenham, was created. There Helen offers personalised health programmes, health MOTs and a complimentary 30-minute discovery consultation. So why did Helen leave the world of IT and make such a change in her life and career? “The truth is I developed my knowledge through necessity, “Helen said. “My son, now 20, was born four weeks’ premature and had digestive issues from birth. It was a constant struggle for him and for us to help him eat and live healthily.

“When he was 11 years old he became very, very sick. After a year of being pushed from pillar to post with no answers or solutions to his problem, we paid to see a consultant and he was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome.” Helen started to explore how she could help her son Tom get better and started to educate herself. For Helen, she felt the medical profession were failing her family and using the phrase ‘it’s complicated’ to deal with her son’s situation. She was told it was a ‘mental’ thing but therapies didn’t work. “My research suggested homeopathy and nutrition were the two areas with the most potential to help Tom and also, for me, the most logical. I looked at biochemistry and after trial and error, with Tom eating very little we found one food which helped him more than any other. Red peppers. They have more vitamin C than an orange, they taste sweet and many children don’t see them as vegetables. “Discovering this was a turning point. Tom regularly eats red peppers and that one food helped him – and us – to improve his quality of life.”

In helping others as she’s helped her own son, Helen creates a bespoke treatment programme for each of her clients. Anyone interested in having support will fill in a questionnaire about their medical history from birth. From that Helen will look for common themes, threads or behaviours which may impact on health and come up with a plan which will be implemented at a client’s own pace. “The aim is to change a client’s situation by taking small steps. It might be just looking at breakfast at first or carrying out a series of food intolerance tests to see if there’s an obvious problem.” Helen is qualified in functional medicine, has a naturopath nutrition diploma, is a senior associate of the Royal Society of Medicine – a full list of her qualific tions are available on her website: www.oakmeadclinic.co.uk

Health Matters

Rhythm and Beat ERE at Beversbrook Medical Centre, we arrange for all our lovely staff members to have annual basic life support training. We are always lucky enough to have amazing trainers who fill us with enthusiasm and confidence and help ensure our life-saving-skills are up to date. Because not all my colleagues are clinically trained, we do go through the basics as well, such as taking a pulse. The trainer will often encourage us to practice by taking each other’s pulse as well as practicing on ourselves. I am very sad to say that I had never successfully taken my own pulse and am embarrassed to admit that I had also never actually owned up to this fact, always nodding ‘yes yes - I can feel it’ when silently concluding that I either have abnormally fat wrists or am clinically dead. That is until I had a close encounter with the very suave and equally as delectable James Bond, who showed me how to do it properly in the comfort of my own home! Well, technically it was actor Roger Moore and technically he was talking to me via a You-Tube video but it did the trick - and so who cares about technicalities! In fact the method with which one uses to take one’s pulse needs no technical knowledge at all – because once you know how you can DIY you need nothing more technical than a watch or a clock! I can now merrily take my own pulse and you will be pleased to hear, Dear Reader, I am a living, breathing, relatively slim wristed picture of health. The 5th – 11th of June is Heart Rhythm Week and this year Roger Moore (AKA the coolest of all Bonds) is helping to promote the Heart Rhythm Alliance campaign by encouraging people to take part in a Pulse Check Challenge. More information and Mr Moore’s silky smooth video can be found via the website www.heartrhythmalliance.org. As well as a handy instructional print out where you can record your pulse rate over a week. Most adults have a resting heart rate of 60-100 beats per minute (bpm) but fitter people (those who like exercise more than I like cake) will have a lower resting heart rate. Your common-or-garden athlete may have a resting heart rate of 40-60 bpm or lower. 52

Now that I know how to accurately take my pulse I can check if I am one of the many people who are living with a heart rhythm disorder blissfully unaware they could have a life-threatening arrhythmia. Atrial Fibrillation or AF, is one of the most common forms of abnormal heart rhythm and a major cause of stroke. By learning how to take your own pulse and joining in with the Pulse Check Challenge you can keep an eye on the regularity of your pulse and can raise any concerns with your GP. Other symptoms of AF include heart palpitations (where you are conscious of your pulse beating quickly in your chest or neck), shortness of breath, dizziness and tiredness. However, having these symptoms can also relate to other (not so serious) illnesses and not be associated with AF at all. To make matters worse, some patients are asymptomatic, meaning they don’t have any symptoms at all. If you are worried it is always better to seek advice from your Doctor. You will be able to tell if you are in AF, if your pulse feels irregular and beats are variable in strength. This is because the chambers of your heart are not beating in rhythm to pass the flow of blood through effectively, which causes blood to coagulate. Early detection means it can be easily treated with anticoagulant medication (such as Warfarin or the new NOAC drugs) that can be prescribed by your GP and, together with regular monitoring, help to reduce the health risks associated with having the disease. I like a challenge, and quite frankly the Pulse Check Challenge is easier than the Plank Challenge and the Ice Bucket Challenge of previous years! So, I’m taking part in June. My lovely colleagues are participating and we will be encouraging our patients to do so as well. If it’s good enough for Mr Bond, its good enough for me….I am after all the original ‘EM’………oh dear! Pet Health

Dog Theft – be prepared … by Danielle Giles, Heathside Veterinary Surgery www.heathsidevets.co.uk

W

Voted the Best Small Vet Practice in the Best UK Vet Awards 2017

ITH the onset of summer, I’m looking forward to throwing open the door and letting the summer breeze meander through the house leaving its scent behind and carrying off the smells (of my soon to become teenage boys), the dog, the cat and the tortoise (who came for a short holiday and has somehow never left!). Have you ever considered the consequences of such actions if you then have a mad urge to do a spot of house cleaning and leave the dog outside to do “its thing”? Our street used to be busy with dogs trotting along reading their pee-mail before returning home for food and an afternoon slump. Obviously, we now have stricter laws regarding straying dogs and we are less likely to let them out to run free as they are family members and we want them to be safe from the outside world.

are in the garden, or better still do you not take your eyes off him. Leaving your dog in the car alone is not sensible either; unless your dog is ‘space possessive’ he is vulnerable to thieves. Do you vary your walking routine? Try changing your routes, walk at different times of the day so tabs cannot be kept on you and your dog by unscrupulous chancers. Talking of walks, how is your dog’s recall? Work on this aspect of their behaviour could save heartache or, if your dog is a runner, use a flexi-lead. Useful too if you are walking in unfamiliar territory. My pet hate is seeing dogs tied up outside shops. I find myself hovering like some old mother hen; not interfering but quietly waiting for this dog’s owner to return so that I know he is back in his rightful hand...and I am not the only one who does this! Of course, it is now the law to have your pet microchipped (which should be a deterrent to thieves) so keep your details up to date; a collar and ID may make someone think again before walking off with your much-loved pet. I had my dog tattooed inside her back leg too which gave me peace of mind. Armed with numerous photos showing markings and distinguishing features; ones alongside me as proof of ownership, I have always felt prepared should she become ‘lost’.

Consider this; in 2016 on average five dogs a day went missing mostly reported as having simply disappeared, some as having run off and a handful stolen. However nearly 40% of those dogs reported missing were, in fact, stolen. Tragically as many as 60% are never recovered. Losing a much-loved family dog is heart wrenching enough but to know they have been stolen would send me into a blind panic. But is it really such a problem? You only have to go on to social media to see the number of pets that go missing and since 2013 it has been regularly reported in the national papers too. Considering the cost of a pedigree dog they are a valuable commodity to a thief. Even non-pedigree dogs become targets because of the generous rewards pet owners offer for the return of a beloved pet. So, what are the do’s and don’ts that we could follow to better safeguard dogs? Firstly, ensure your garden is secure, a good solid fence without gaps, with high lockable gates. Check your dog frequently when they 54

I never did lose my dog (except to old age eventually) but then I am aware of the increase in lost dogs and dog theft because of the work I do. Until this upsetting trend is recognised by dog owners, I will continue to cluck and ‘over-see’ any dog left tied up outside the local newsagents; even if I am regarded with suspicion by others doing the same as me!

Auto-Biographies

2017 Ford Grand C-Max by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist - @carwriteups

partial leather interior, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors, and keyless start and entry. There’s also Ford's Sync 3 infotainment system, with an easy-to-read eight-inch touchscreen. But the best thing is that the Grand C-Max is a surprisingly good drive. I say ‘surprising’ because I was a man who used to dislike MPVs because of their apparent dearth of dynamism. The 2.0 TDCi 150PS Powershift model is smooth and has lots of low down shove. It works particularly well with the six-speed automatic transmission. In fact, it doesn’t drive like a bus – it behaves just like a decent 2.0 litre turbo diesel car should do.

F

ORD’S Grand C-Max is a car designed to carry up to seven people safely and comfortably. It’s got all the things that make life easier. Things such as sliding rear doors that mean the children can get in or out without bashing the doors on walls or other cars. What’s more, the Grand C-Max is roomy inside, with a smart set-up that enables the centre chair in the second row to fold beneath one of the other seats, leaving a space to walk through. I should add, the Grand C-Max Ford loaned me was the Titanium X 2.0 TDCi 150PS Powershift. Basically, I was handed the top of the range version - the one with all the bells and whistles. However, whether you get the entry level or the top level Grand C-Max, its

function is the same – it’s a car that’ll hold lots of people. Granted, the third row of seats are tucked away for most of the time in the boot floor, and even though they’re only for kids, they’re still very handy. There’s also a ‘normal’ Ford C-Max, which is a spacious five-seater so don’t feel you must go for the ‘Grand’ version. On test, I didn’t need to use the third row all that much, so the two spare seats often remained where they were. This was no bad thing, as without the third tier of seats in operation, the boot stays big. With the seats up, the load area is only good for about three bags of shopping, but with them down, you can knock yourself out filling it up. Not literally, you understand. Standard equipment on the Ford Grand C-Max is generous. It includes Ford's Quickclear windscreen, sports-style seats, air conditioning and DAB radio. Upgrade to the flagship Titanium X trim and you get a panoramic sunroof, bi-xenon headlights, a

56

What’s more, it holds the road well, feeling planted on motorways and through twisty sections of tarmac. It’s also got a cheeky punch to it, with the Titanium X 2.0 TDCi 150PS Powershift variant able to do 0-62mph in 10.7 seconds. It’s efficient, too, consistently doing mid to late 40s real-world mpg. So, I’ve got to say, as a dad-of-three, I’m impressed. In fact, I’m seriously considering buying the Ford Grand C-Max now I’ve lived with it for a while. I just might not be able to dig deep enough for the flagship version. Gardening

The humble Viola by Rachael Leverton

Violas are a smaller-flowered version of a pansy but are more reliably perennial. They come in an amazingly wide range of colours and flower patterns. They are also incredibly easy to propagate. To make more viola plants simply cut off 7-8cm / 3 inches of the shoot tips at any time of year. Remove the lower leaves and root them into sandy compost. When they take, repot the little plantlets into 7.5cm / 3 inch pots of multi-purpose compost until they become established. They can then be planted out in the garden. The whole process only takes a matter of a few weeks ! 58

The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2017

Violas are happy in sun, or dappled shade and prefer soil that doesn't become too dry, so in fact they are the perfect plant for most British gardens and will provide masses of colour at ankleheight. I have many favourites. There is a pretty purple and yellow one in my garden called Heartsease which migrated from a neighbour's garden and has selfseeded everywhere. I added Grey Owl, which is pale blue and soft yellow, and I propagated one from my mother-in-law's garden, called Irish Molly, which is various shades of subtle green, though I've seen other colours also being sold under that name! This year I have an exquisitely pretty fragrant variety

called Sorbet 'Yellow Frost'. I can't recommend it highly enough. The thing is, they are so easy to grow that you can go to any garden centre and pick your favourite colour combination. Whether you say vee-oh-la or vyoh-la, this lovely little flower will add music to your garden display. Happy Gardening.

Gardening

Passion Flower

Building and Landscaping Specialists

A popular, summer climber, the passion flower has exotic creamy-white flowers with purpleblue zoned coronas. Best planted in Spring or Autumn in sunny, sheltered spots, the passion flower will bloom from mid-to-late summer to a height and spread of approximately 2-10 metres. They will need plenty of water during the growing season and will make rapid growth, clinging with tendrils to other plants, walls or fences. Adequate support is recommended for growth. After summer, large, bright orangey fruits can form on the plants providing lasting decorative colour to the garden but are best not eaten. Instead, why not use to harvest seeds for next season.

Faith Matters

Saying ‘No’ S

ome years ago I used to be a trainer working for the NHS. One of the courses I used to facilitate was on the subject of Assertiveness. Someone who is assertive behaves confidently and is not frightened to say what they want. However those on the course had often been sent by their managers because they were not seen as assertive enough in their work. There were many techniques taught on the course. One was how to say ‘No’. It is actually very hard to just say ‘no’, but there are times when it is right to do so. What if a crowd of people wanted to throw you off a cliff? What cliff you might ask? Stay with me and I'll explain. There’s an odd story written about Jesus. One day Jesus returns to his hometown where he's invited to take part in the synagogue. Jesus read from the scripture, and when he did the crowd were amazed. They were excited about what he was saying. Their hometown boy had ‘done good’. They were thinking that he might be a prophet or even something more than that. But then Jesus implied that God’s saviour was not only for the Jews but everyone. He suggested that God’s story would ultimately include everyone - even the people the crowd didn't like, and they really didn’t think that was good news. The angry crowd formed a lynch mob. They dragged Jesus to the outskirts of town to fling him off the edge of a cliff. It was the place of execution and their plan was to throw him over the edge. It must have been a terrifying moment. Here was Jesus, with his friends and family who had known him since birth, ready to fling him over the edge. What was he to do? Amazingly he walked through the crowd and went on his way. When a crowd of angry, fearful, self-righteous, infuriated bullies is ready to throw him over a cliff, Jesus says: “No. You will not throw me off this cliff.” He just walks away. (Luke Chapter 4, verses 16-30) The story reminds me that one of the times that we might say “no” is when people want to throw us off a cliff. Your cliff might look like a relationship that constantly pushes you to the edge - one that places too many demands, and takes so much that you feel you are close to not being able to take

64

any more. A cliff might look like a manager at work who belittles and shames you and makes you feel inadequate so that you begin to wonder if you should even stay at your workplace and you find yourself saying: “Maybe I’m not good enough for this job.” A cliff might even be someone who claims to love you but always undermines you, telling you that you are ugly, unlovable and not capable of being more. Often people have been pushed and shoved and cornered for so long that they have begun to think it is normal. I often found participants on my assertiveness courses had actually been bullied by their managers. It is not love that leads people to bring others to a cliff edge. It is usually fear, insecurity, or the need for power and control. It was the same for the crowds and Jesus. The people were scared. They were afraid of what Jesus had said, and to deal with their fear they decided Jesus had to go. It was not the right response. It is always the wrong response. That’s why Jesus said no. No -you don’t get to do this to me. I will not let you tell me who I am. You will not throw me off this cliff! We can do it too, by first recognizing the cliff. Remember that you don’t deserve to be on a cliff edge. No one deserves it. Everyone is worthy of love and respect, because God tells us so. That includes YOU. Say “No thank-you,” and walk away. It might be like refusing to listen to the lies someone keeps telling you about yourself. Or like in Jesus’ situation, it might be like walking away. It always looks like saying “no.” If you are on the edge, imagine on the other side of the crowd is God who loves you. Picture his open hands, inviting you to a place where you are safe, valued and loved. People may try to stop you and pull you back, but remember you can say “no.” You can say: “YOU WILL NOT THROW ME OFF THIS CLIFF!’ And you can walk towards God and something new. Blessings on you all Rev Sam King (revsamking@talktalk.net) Design & Computer Graphics by Alexander S. Grenfell, Calne.

A Good Read Tom Gates: Dogzombies Rule (for now) by Liz Pichon .........................................................................................

The eleventh instalment in this hugely popular series will not disappoint fans. Tom is once more trying to cope with life at school, his annoying sister, Delia, and plotting to make his band, Dogzombies, the best band in the world ever. Tom and his friends decide that if their band is going to be successful they need to do more than play at an old people’s home. So they set about trying to make it big by doing what all bands do: writing new songs and producing a music video. This doesn’t prove to be as easy as they had thought as they struggle to find lyrics that rhyme. It also turns out that music videos take a lot of planning and are made harder when an animal runs off with your dad’s phone during filming! An enticing mixture of text and cartoons this book is a nice easy read, despite being over 200 pages long. Aimed at 9-12 year olds it certainly isn’t the most challenging book as far as vocabulary is concerned and there are many readers of the series that are younger. However, if you have a reluctant reader – especially a boy – this is an excellent choice.

Blackberry Wine by Joanne Harris

......................................................................................... Now that the summer is upon us what better excuse do we need than to escape to the hot summers of the 1970s and a gentler pace of life in both Yorkshire and the South of France? Published just one year after her hit novel Chocolat this split-time novel will transport you to the magic of the countryside and the simple pleasure a bottle of wine. Londoner Jay is a writer who published his greatest work - ‘Jackapple Joe’ - 10 years ago, but has since struggled to replicate this success. Travelling between the present and the summers of Jay’s childhood we learn of the unlikely friendship he struck up with an old man called Jackapple Joe. From him Jay learns about the magic of nature and the secrets of homemade wine. In the present Jay returns to Yorkshire hoping to find some sense of meaning and inspiration. Instead he finds only some old bottles of Joe’s special brew. The wine has more of an effect on him than he bargained for and under the ruse of working on his next novel Jay buys a house in the French village of Lansquenetsous-Tannes (the setting for Chocolat). In reality, he is escaping his city life and his girlfriend, and his sense of failure. As the wine works it magic Joe finds his inspiration. But is it the wine, or is it the ghost of an old friend? Magic can be found in many unlikely places: the magic of nature; the magic of friendship; and the magic of belief in ourselves.

English As “She” Is Mangled Am I turning into a fussy old bat as I get older, (Don’t all shout at once!) or is my complaint about the pronunciation of certain words a valid one? I’m not saying that every word coming out of my mouth is pronounced correctly, but I pride myself on not making some of the gaffs I hear every day by so called educated people.

Hands up if you now understand the difference! (Those of you with your eyes still watering and who are walking a trifle strangely obviously didn’t know – but I bet you do now!)

Interviewers on television for one, and youngsters presenting pop programmes for another are just two of the offending groups of people who make my blood pressure go up several degrees.

Sometimes mispronounced words can be extremely funny, and I have heard things that have made me shake with suppressed laughter until I have almost choked.

I have heard simple words mispronounced by teachers – you know, the people we trust to educate our children. I have even been “told off” by my own children many years ago when I corrected them. It’s extremely irritating to have your eight year old tell you that, “Miss doesn’t say it like that!”

Returning from town one market day, I sat behind two elderly ladies who kept me entertained for the length of the journey. One of them was obviously very proud of her young grandson who had recently started school for the first time.

The word in question was, “Drawer!” The sentence spoken was – “I like drawering!” I always believed a “drawer” was an article of furniture with handles! How little regard I must’ve paid to my English lessons, and how lacking my education must’ve been. How did my English teacher ever manage to get a placement in a university? Every one now knows the pronunciation I and my fellow pupils were taught all those years ago was totally WRONG! We should have said we “drore” pictures! How did we get through life thus far, constantly using the wrong word? Then there are the two words “crotch” and “crutch.” Even some of the employees of dear old “Aunty Beeb” can’t quite get to grips with that one. If you have an injury to your leg or foot and require support in able to walk, then you would need a CRUTCH! Get your CRUTCH and CROTCH mixed up, and you could do yourself a serious mischief. At the very least you will make your eyes water! If you need help to walk, I can’t see a CROTCH being much use! A soft gusset isn’t going to support your weight. Lean on that, and you’ll find yourself flat on your face with your itty-bitty piece of shaped cotton still scrunched under your armpit like a stray tissue – and about as much use as a chocolate tea pot! 68

“Colin’s very clever.” She told her friend. “He has a lot of books at home, about the sea – and he’s read them all.” Her friend nodded her head, showing she was listening. “He surprised his teacher on his first day at school,” the proud grandmother went on. “They were talking about aquariums and Colin asked her if she knew that octopuses don’t have fins – they have eight testicles instead!” As if that wasn’t enough, she then went on to talk about her daughter who had recently gone to live in America. “She’s just got married you know,” she said, “And her husband’s bought her a posh condom to live in.” At that point her friend joined in the conversation. “Did she get her furniture out of the suppository then?” Luckily for me, the bus reached my stop just then, and I was able to get off. Anyone passing during the following ten minutes would have thought I was having a fit, as I stood clutching the bus stop pole, almost bent double, wheezing for breath and with mascara streaming down my cheeks as I howled with laughter. Sad to say, but I never saw those two ladies again, yet they will remain in my mind for always. I have overheard many such snippets of hilarious conversations like that as I’ve sat in a cafe or stood in the queue at the supermarket checkout, and I’m still wondering how the middle aged woman who fell off her bicycle rode home with a bleeding “womb” on her knee! As do people on the other end of the phone who say, “Bear with me !” I always get the urge to say in reply, “Why – are you in labour?” ............ Jo Deacon...@...2017 ............

Equity release may involve a lifetime mortgage or a home reversion plan. To understand the features and risks, ask for a personalised illustration. Equity release may not be right for everyone. It may affect your entitlement to state benefits and will reduce the value of your estate. Think carefully before securing other debts against your home. Providus Financial Limited is registered in England and Wales, Registered Number 09594033.
