After a lot of deliberation, I have decided to enter The 'Brave the Shave' in aid of MacMillan cancer support. The shave is to take place in the office on 24th October at 1pm so any support and donations would be gratefully received. I confess to coming to work this morning in the cold, wondering why I chose this time of the year to do it but then remembered you can’t choose the time of year you're diagnosed with cancer - it’s a sobering thought. to cancer within a short period of time and her passing left family and friends, shocked and devastated with the speed at which it happened. Her passing affected me more than my own illness. I also lost both my parents to cancer so it’s affected me over and over again.”

Annie Harling, owner and editor of the Town Crier North Wiltshire is taking part in the national ‘Brave The Shave’ campaign this month to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. A survivor of cancer herself, Annie, who has lived in Calne for 30 years, has made the decision to have her head shaved and give back to help others facing a similar, or worse, diagnosis. She said: “Having had bowel cancer myself in 2011 which led to major surgery – I know I’m one of the lucky ones. I may lose my hair temporarily by doing this but that’s nothing compared with having treatment for cancer or losing your life to this dreadful disease. “In 2017, I lost my friend Wendy

4

During her own illness, Annie was supported by friends, family and work colleagues and the Macmillan nurses. “They comfort and support us and our families through those difficult times. However in turn they need our support to fund their vital roles of helping others at the worst moments of their lives.” “I want to do my bit to say thank you for the help I received and I also

want to honour those who did not survive,” Annie said. Anyone can come along and make a donation on the day or visit by 'Just Giving' at: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/annie-harling or you can call in the office to make a donation. Brave The Shave is a campaign which has been running since 2015 and has to date raised £16.8m. Participants sign up, pick a Brave The Shave date and then get sponsorship for it. Some who take part in the challenge can opt for their hair, if suitable, to be donated to the Little Princess Trust which provides real hair wigs to children and young adults with cancer and other serious illnesses. by Fiona Scott

Local residents are campaigning to change our use of plastic.

Focus

Following the shocking plastic pollution scenes shown on Sir David Attenborough's "Blue Planet" TV series, Malmesbury Against Plastic (MAP) was born. "Plastic is amazing. It is here to stay. Not all of it is bad. But some is longlived, non-recyclable and toxic to our environment. The single use plastic (SUP) is what we want eliminated." says MAP founder member Mandy Dobson. Recycling is not easy with numerous and confusing symbols. Wiltshire Council have recently increased the range of plastic it recycles but across the Country schemes vary from Council to Council. David Attenborough’s Blue Planet made people really think about how plastic pollutes our planet. A group of us got together to form Malmesbury Against Plastic (MAP) focusing on Single Use Plastic (SUP). Malmesbury Town Council is also taking action against SUP. "We are working closely with MAP 8

and looking to do away with all Single Use Plastics in the Town Wiltshire Hall. Hopefully other Councils will join us." said Malmesbury Wildlife Trust Town and Wiltshire Councillor, launches Gavin Grant. new business MAP has also teamed up venture... with marine conservation and anti-pollution charity, Surfers Against Sewage (SAS). It wants Malmesbury to be designated as

one of the charity's "Plastic Free Communities". "We are encouraging local businesses to reduce and preferably eliminate Single Use Plastic. Many are keen and some like the Jackdaw Cafe in the Town Hall are almost there." added Mandy. MAP also wants a local "Refill Scheme" with free tap water. This reduces pollution from plastic bottles and promotes

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2018

healthy hydration by making refilling a water bottle easy. "It's our choice; sit back and do nothing or act for our children and grandchildren. Everything we do to get rid of bad plastic, no matter how small, makes a big difference." says Mandy To help us all to do our bit, MAP is joining Malmesbury Town Council in organising a "Plastic Unwrapped" festival. This happens on Saturday 24th November in Malmesbury Town Hall with the town's Mayor, Councillor Fran Vandelli opening the event at 10am. "Everyone is very welcome. There will be lots to see, hear and do including activities for children. Please come along, we will be delighted to see you there" said Mandy.

Boatman Admin Services named one of UK’s Top ‘Small Biz 100’ by Small Business Saturday Boatman Admin Services has been recognised in the Small Biz 100 winners. Small business is big business in the UK and we’re SUPER proud to have been selected as one of the 100 businesses to be profiled as part of the national ‘Small Business Saturday’ campaign for 2018. Small Business Saturday is a campaign which is aimed at highlighting and celebrating the many and varied small businesses in existence in the UK. It encourages consumers to support the small businesses in their communities. It is based around one day in the year when events up and down the country will be taking place: this year it will take place on Saturday 1st December. Boatman Admin Services offers virtual admin services, social media management and event organisation. A lot of our clients use our services to free themselves of their day-to-day routine, giving them more time to concentrate on the bigger picture. The support we offer is flexible and cost-effective allowing you to dip into our services when you need them. We are often chosen by companies who might not want the commitment of an in-house or permanent resource. Small Business Saturday is important for us, not only as an individual business, but also as a part of the exciting and thriving small business community within Wiltshire and the South West. There are only two other winners in the Wiltshire area this year. Our profile day on 2 September saw us tweeting and posting about what we do, and also sharing information about other local businesses around us. Director Emma Boatman stated “3 years ago I never thought I’d have my own business let alone be selected as part of the Small Biz 100 - it’s great that our company now has nationwide recognition. A big part of our business is all about helping other small businesses grow and we have found that those who work with us see us as an investment not an expense. I’ve even been labelled the ‘admin fairy’!” For more information on Small Business Saturday visit their website at: smallbusinesssaturdayuk.com or Facebook page (www.facebook.com/smallbusinesssaturdayuk) or Twitter feed (@SmallBizSatUk) or use the hashtag #SmallBizSatUK To find out more, please contact Emma Boatman on 01249 470067 or 07834 176340 Boatman Admin Services Providing virtual admin support, social media management and events

Five miles or so west of Chippenham and close to the famous racing circuit of Castle Combe, a turn off will lead you to the delightful little village of Yatton Keynell. Mentioned in the Domesday Book as “Getone” and hardly changed in 300 years, it is believed it adopted the added Keynell sometime in the 13th century, after being given a considerable amount of land by one Henry Caynell in and around 1242.This went to “Stanley Abbey”. In 1250 Sir William Keynell built a church as a thanks for his own safe return from the Crusades, and though its 15th century tower still stands, the church was mostly redesigned by George Edmund Street as part of a restoration in 1868. Across the road from the building stands the Bell Inn, and the old toll road (now the B4039) leading to Castle Combe had a toll booth there until its closure in 1871. The road to nearby Grittleton runs by the horribly named “Smallpox Farm”, which, though once a well run smallholding , in the 17 hundreds was taken over as an isolation hospital for the dying and the sick with the disease. By then, it was no longer recognisable as the former “Park Farm House”. An unusual milestone at the base of a wall shows Hyde Park Corner London as being 97 miles away and Sodbury just 11.

There is also a village hall, and a wealth of beautiful cottages in a mix of whitewashed walls and mellow Cotswold stone. Shrubs tumble over dry stone walls, hanging baskets gently sway from cottage porches, and the village manages to be both vibrant and sleepy at the same time.

The nearby tiny hamlet of “Tiddleywink” was only marked on official maps as recently as 2003 after locals campaigned to have it recognised. Able to boast a good village school, Yatton Keynell also has Allington Farm Shop, annual summer fete each June, delightful Christmas market every year, and a lovely golf course. 14

The Good Good-bye... Funerals have been in the news recently. It was reported that a price war has broken out amongst the two biggest players in the UK funeral market. But it is not just the price that one should be thinking of when organising a funeral but the quality of the service provided by the undertaking and the celebrant. I have had the great privilege over the years as a Baptist minister of working with bereaved family and friends to create an opportunity to say a good good-bye. The other day I was visiting an older lady on one of my pastoral visits. I was trying to discover if she was anxious about dying and also gently encouraging her to think about her own funeral and what she might like in it. After a while she looked me in the eyes and said, "You're very morbid today." Many of us find it hard to discuss and contemplate our own death. Death has been called the last taboo. Throughout the world, death and rituals that surround it are steeped in taboos. Benjamin Franklin once said, "There are only two things certain in life: death and taxes." One thing I have discovered over the years is that whether it is your own death or somebody else's, it can be so much easier if you think ahead of time and make plans. The plans need to go far beyond pre-paid funeral arrangements, or where we want to be buried or where we would like our ashes scattered. The most moving funerals I have been a part of are those where the deceased had left their

funeral wishes with me or the family. The funeral was much more meaningful having songs, hymns, music, readings and rituals that were the wishes of the loved one who had died. I have become so much more flexible when I discuss funeral ideas with the dying or with the relatives after the death. A funeral is an opportunity to say good-bye and to remember, but it is also on opportunity to celebrate and give thanks for a life. In a religious context it is also an opportunity to commend the deceased to God's love and care in the life beyond this one. My father is 89 years old and a little while ago he handed me four sides of typed A4. "There you go", he said, "There's my life story ready for my funeral". Part of me felt very uncomfortable because I didn't want to think about life without him. However, another part of me was delighted because I now have his story, and more importantly, I know how meaningful it will be for my family and I when it's told in his own words as we say our good-byes. Whether one decide to have a religious or non-religious funeral we all need to encourage each other to discuss, innovate, participate, and think more positively about death and one's own funeral wishes. We can be sure death will come one day and it will be so much more significant to family and friends knowing that it was your wishes and your story that is being told and celebrated at your funeral. Then it really will be - a good good-bye. Written by Rev. Sam King

COPING WITH Death is a always traumatic and difficult to come to terms with. Grief is a natural emotion to feel at a time of loss and upset, and it affects people in many different ways. There are tools and strategies you can adopt to help you manage the pain and heartache of the grieving process.

Don’t suffer alone - Find support

Support from others is hugely comforting. Even if you’re not comfortable talking about your feelings, it’s important to express them now. Turn to friends and family whenever possible. Lean on those who care about you - whether it’s a shoulder to cry on or help with funeral arrangements.

Join a support group Grief can be lonely. There are support groups available in your area so don’t suffer alone.

Talk to a therapist Ask your GP for a referral to a mental health specialist.

Take care of yourself

The stress of a loss can deplete your energy and emotional reserves. Ensure you try and look after your

Grief

emotional and physical needs during this difficult time.

Face your feelings

Trying to suppress grief can prolong the grieving process. Write about your loss in a journal or compose a letter with all the things you want to say to the person.

Don’t let anyone tell you how to feel No one else is entitled to say “move on”or

“get over it”. Let yourself feel whatever you feel without guilt or judgement.

Plan ahead for grief triggers

Anniversaries, birthdays and other milestones can reawaken many memories and feelings. Be prepared and acknowledge it is normal!

When grief doesn’t go away

It is normal to feel devastated, numb or angry following a loss. But as time passes these emotions feel less intense. If not then you may need to consult your GP or support person and voice your concerns as they may trigger depression. The Samaritans also offer confidential emotional support 24 hrs a day.

Is long term elderly care ever free?

We asked Andrew Douglas, Partner at Awdry Bailey & Douglas Solicitors who specialises in elderly care, for his views on this issue. Surely elderly care is always free? There are only two situations where Long term care is totally free, meaning that people should not pay for their care at all. The first situation is if a person qualifies for NHS Continuing Healthcare (“CHC”). In this situation the NHS pays for everything including board, lodging and medical treatment. To qualify a person must have a primary health need determined by the nature, intensity, complexity and unpredictability of their medical condition. This type of funding is not for life and is reviewed regularly. The bar for qualifying is high. The second situation is if a person has been detained in hospital under Section 3 of the Mental Health Act 1983 meaning that upon discharge if the same condition applies they are entitled to free aftercare whether rich or poor.

Is elderly care ever partially free? Again there are two principal situations where this arises. Firstly if a person does not qualify for CHC but as part of a follow up assessment qualifies for Funded Nursing Care. This means no matter how rich or poor they get a payment towards their nursing costs in a registered nursing home or a residential home registered for nursing. The rate is £155.05 per week. The second situation arises where but for certain disregards a person’s house would be used to pay for their care. The disregards include where a person goes into care but leaves behind in their house a spouse, partner or former partner provided they are not estranged or a relative over the age of 60. There are other disregards.

If not free or partially free what then happens? Firstly your income is taken into account to include state pension and occupational pensions. Then your capital is taken into account to include your house assuming none of the disregards referred to above apply. You are then treated as a private funder and have to pay for your long term care assuming your total savings exceed £23,250.

To know more and for a free appointment to find out answers to the questions that need answering email Andrew Douglas or his team on ajd@awdrys.co.uk or call on 0800 072 8636. LOCAL VILLAGES RECEIVE

life-saving defibrillators

FROM MALMESBURY LEAGUE OF FRIENDS Three local parish councils have received funding from Malmesbury League of Friends (MLOF) to install life-saving defibrillators in their villages. Brokenborough, Little Somerford and Corston, which is within Malmesbury St Paul’s Without Parish Council, all responded to the offer by MLOF earlier this year.

Chris’s volunteer story . . . When I was asked to become a Care Home Volunteer, I wasn’t at all sure that I had what it took. It didn’t take long, however, to decide that the least I could do was find out. What I found is that all that is needed is a couple of spare hours a week, an interest in people and the ability to listen, to chat and to empathise with and respond to those who can no longer live the life they once lived. Anything else you need to know, how to help people with dementia, for example, you will be taught.

Automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) have been described as the single most important development in the treatment of sudden cardiac arrest. Designed for use by untrained lay persons, they have improved the outcomes of literally thousands of people who have suffered from cardiac arrests.

Many local parishes already have defibrillators, and others are still considering the offer of £1,500 each towards their installation.

Having been volunteering for about eighteen months, I have formed meaningful relationships with people who have lived varied and interesting lives. My lack of anything I would call a skill has not been a problem. I have always loved to sing, I have always loved to read and I have found both of these to be helpful. I read poetry most weeks to one lady who cannot see and sometimes to others. This often revives memories leading to discussion - and sometimes to impromptu singing!

Anyone in the company of someone suffering from a cardiac arrest should ring 999, when they will be told the location of the nearest defibrillator, together with a simple code to gain access. A simple set of instructions will then enable any layperson to begin treatment immediately before professional help arrives.

I have found that poetry seems to strike the same sort of memory chord as singing does. It is such a delight when somebody who was snoozing in a corner a few minutes ago is alert and joining in from memory with the poem I am reading and sometimes remembering the whole thing!

Former Malmesbury mayor and ambulance professional Ray Sanderson, who advised Brokenborough on the acquisition of their defibrillator, said: “I know from personal experience how vital these machines can be. They have saved many, many lives.”

Whatever the outcome we have fun and it does me good to know that I have brightened somebody’s day. I get as much as I give.

MLOF chairman David Hide said: “We are delighted to have helped towards the installation of defibrillators in these three villages. We’d like to hear from any other local parish councils who do not currently have one.” Bob Tatton, Chairman of Brokenborough Parish Council, said: “We are very grateful to have

received this help in placing this life-saving facility in the centre of the village.” 24

TRAVEL GUIDE

Laid back

Jamaica!!!

From the music of Bob Marley and the Bond novels of Ian Fleming to the record-breaking exploits of Usain Bolt, Jamaica has produced some of the most defining cultural and sporting icons of our time. This is the real Caribbean, where unique and effervescent culture sits beside magnificent natural beauty and a compellingly carefree yet feisty spirit. Hit the beautiful white sand beaches on the north coast, visit coffee plantations, explore thick rainforest, swim in the astonishing Dunn’s River Falls and explore the verdant peaks of the Blue Mountains. Golf courses are blessed with stunning ocean views, the Appleton Estate lets you sample Jamaican rums and sugar cane juice, and the island’s delectable cuisine will tempt your taste buds with exquisite smoked marlin, scorching jerk chicken, fresh lobster and the most succulent shrimp, best enjoyed dining al fresco by the edge of the beautiful Caribbean Sea. In energetic Ocho Rios you can swim with dolphins, take an aerial rainforest canopy ride, bobsled down Mystic Mountain or kayak through the 300-acre hidden paradise of the White River Valley. The more bohemian Negril will treat you to Jamaica’s finest beach, quirky boutique hotels and spectacularly daring displays from the local cliff divers. Martine was lucky enough to do some of the above on her recent visit in June, please feel free to contact her on 01249 447488 or pop in to the office with any questions you may have on beautiful laid back Jamaica!

Autumn

Migration

We may have said our fond farewells to the swallows and their fellow summer visitors, but now it’s time to welcome many thousands of feathered visitors from the north.

Britain has some of the best places in Europe for birds to stop off on their long journeys: our coasts and estuaries really are nature’s service stations. Our marshes, mudflats, lakes and reservoirs are also the perfect spots for many birds to spend the winter, positively tropical compared to where they’ve travelled from. For the birds, these special places are vital for their winter survival. For us, that means autumn is a brilliant time to get outdoors and meet a new cast of characters.

pink-footed geese. They’re here to feed on grain, potatoes and grass in fields, and to catch them at their best head to one of the sites where they spend the night and watch them make their dawn flight: spectacular. Another staggering seasonal bird sight is that of the flocks of knot, wading birds that feed on mudflats, chased by the tide. When they’re on the move they fly back and forth in their tight flocks, thousands of birds strong, shimmering in the winter sun. You’ll notice that numbers of ducks on your local lakes increase at this time of year too, including pochard, tufted duck and teal from the north joining their UK neighbours.

Arriving in their thousands from Iceland and Greenland are the

There are even ducks on the sea: eiders, scoters and long-tailed ducks from northern Europe making the most of our warmer waters. The journeys these birds will have made are astounding. The dark-bellied brent goose, for example, flies an incredible 4,700km (2,900m) from Siberia to the eastern side of the UK. Over its lifetime this bird will clock up the equivalent air miles of flying two and a half times round the planet! Sometimes winter visitors will even turn up on your doorstep! When the Beast from the East struck the UK with freezing weather conditions in February 2018, many people contacted the RSPB to ask about strange birds turning up in their gardens. Fieldfares, large thrushes from Scandinavia, are regular winter visitors, and normally they’d be seen feasting on berries in hedgerows. Towards the end of winter, they move to the ground to search for worms. But the late snowfall and chilly weather came at a time when berries were scarce, and the ground was frozen, so the hungry birds flocked to gardens where there was more food around. Their smaller cousins, redwings, also took advantage of generous bird feeding, and both types of birds could be seen on the nation’s lawns, gobbling apples and other scraps left out for them. “FIGHTING FOR YOUR RIGHTS”

Sad times ahead for some of the shops we grew up with and loved. More and more retailers are going to the wall as a combination of business rates, online shopping and changing tastes leave them in debt and out of time. I’m often asked what I think this means for the high street. Are we looking at boarded up shops and graffiti where once we met and socialised while doing the shopping? What does this mean for our communities? In truth, no-one knows what will happen next. But if you want to fight for your right to shop on the high street, here are a few tips on how to support your local businesses and brands.

JAMES WALKER Consumer Champion – the man who helps you resolve your consumer complaints!

with robots. So why not have a monthly or weekly embargo on using online shops. Once you break the habit, it’s surprisingly easy. Support your local retailer. It’s harder than ever to be an independent shop. I’d love to see the end of extortionate business rates and other unnecessary

Check out a collective. Increasingly, shops are banding together to share costs and save on services. This might involve setting up in shared premises, having a collective online website or shopping portal, working together to provide goods and services for one another and many more creative ways to work together. Check online for the collectives near you.

SAVE THE HIGH STREET

Exploit online shops. You can get anything online, but if you’re buying clothes let’s be realistic – often they won’t fit and other goods might not live up to the photo when they arrive. A recent report suggested that half of all goods ordered online were returned. So, do your browsing online, find something you like and buy on the high street.

Socialise. Shops know they have to adapt or die, so loads of them now have cafes, cake and places to chill. A lot of these spaces are better than most chain cafes and restaurants (and have better views or ambience). Meet friends and family for a chat and a snack in one and keep those tills ringing. Customer service. Yes, yes, we know the big online retailers have got everything and it’s all cheap, but often their customer service is rubbish. Increasingly, they’re making it harder for you to interact with an actual human being and many are actively looking to automate some services and replace other staff 40

costs that are driving some to extinction.

A good way to show your support for an independent business is to spread the word among friends and family. Peer recommendations are the most important form of advertising. Tell people about the places you love to help keep them in business, mention them on your social media pages, give them a shout out to your mates. Take out cash and hit the market. Local markets are the lifeblood of many cities and towns. Your fruit and veg are likely to be cheaper bought from there too. It’s a bit of a myth that supermarkets make life easier for us. They’re often overpriced and a rip-off. Chances you can get Theare Town Crier Magazine two-thirds or your weekly shop from a market in one go – so get haggling!

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2018

Be selfish. Yes, you heard that right! A popular high street with independent retailers and restaurants can add serious cash to your property value. Plus, it makes your home town somewhere to be proud of. As always, the fun police are never far away, so make sure you support cafes and restaurants that want tables outside their venues, bright or quirky designs on stores and maybe a cheeky but funny billboard or advertising slogan too!

I would love to hear your tips and suggestions for keeping your high street alive. So get in touch. CELEBRITY INTERVIEW

Lancashire

Award winning actress Sarah Lancashire won the hearts of many as the dim but lovable barmaid Raquel in Coronation Street – she’s been our screen for over 30 years.

Sarah went on to secure roles in Where the Heart Is, Clocking Off and Seeing Red. In the summer of 2000, she signed a two-year £1.3m contract with ITV making her the UK's highest paid television actress at the time. Her first role under the new contract was in sixpart drama The Glass opposite John Thaw before starring in the two-part psychological drama The Cry. She has narrated the BBC One series Lark Rise To Candleford, played the mother of a murder victim in the BBC drama Five Daughters and the Head of Ladies-wear Miss Audrey in The Paradise. She is also one of the lead cast members in BBC drama, Last Tango in Halifax and has won critical acclaim for her role as police sergeant Catherine Cawood inHappy Valley. Educated at Oldham Hulme Grammar School, Sarah started battling depression at the age of 17. She was offered a place at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and graduated in 1986. Her first job was with the Manchester Library Theatre Company. Because she had big gaps between work, Sarah worked as a drama teacher at Salford University to support herself. When she was 22, she married music lecturer Gary Hargreaves, her first serious boyfriend; they had been dating for four years. They had a son called Thomas in 1987 before another arrived in 1989. They separated in 1995 before divorcing. Then in 2001, Sarah married TV producer and executive Peter Salmon with whom she has a son Joseph, born in 2003.

44

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2018

Sarah got her big break when she landed the role of Linda in the West End production of Blood Brothers at the Albery Theatre in 1990. In 1991, two weeks after her run in Blood Brothers came to an end, she landed the part of Raquel Wolstenholme, a colleague of Norman ‘Curly’ Watts, played by Kevin Kennedy, in Coronation Street. She proved to be an instant hit with fans of the soap, even more so when Raquel and Curly married, and starred in the spinoff Coronation Street episode, the Cruise, which focused on their honeymoon. When Sarah left the soap in 1996 and her final scenes attracted 20 million viewers. After Corrie, Sarah went on to star as district nurse Ruth Goddard in ITV drama Where the Heart Is before making a guest appearance on the dark comedy series Murder Most Horrid. After she left Where the Heart Is in 1999, she returned to Corrie for one episode which just starred her and Kevin Kennedy, in which Raquel asks Curly for a divorce.

In 2017 she was awarded an OBE for services to drama. She received the accolade from the Duke of Cambridge at Buckingham Palace. “I wish my father had been alive,” said Sarah. “I think at times like this, really, one tends to focus on parents and my father would have been the proudest man in the world. It's very difficult because you are in these most spectacular surroundings and you are trying desperately to take it all in. It's wonderful.” Born in Oldham, Greater Manchester in 1964 Sarah has three brothers; one her twin, one older, one younger. Her father Geoffrey was a television scriptwriter for Coronation Street and The Cuckoo Waltz and her mother Hilda was his personal assistant. Sarah graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1986 and began her career in local theatre while teaching drama classes at the University of Salford.

Green Gooseberry Jam This wonderfully tart jam goes well with scones and cream or creme fraiche and makes a lovely filling for Victoria sandwich cakes. ximately) Makes: 2 jars (appro oking time: 1 hour Preparation and co this recipe. eter is necessary for A cooking thermom ld be cer. The saucer shou Also jam jars and a sau ld. co it ep to ke placed in the freezer Ingredients ped ipe gooseberries, top 900g Slightly under-r and tailed sugar 900g–1kg Granulated 600ml water

METHOD First wash your jam jars in hot soapy water, then rinse well. Put them into a preheated oven at 160°C/gas 3 until you are ready to use them. Put the fruit and water only into a large, heavy-based saucepan. Bring to the boil, then simmer gently until the skins are soft. If you add the sugar the skins will not soften. Add the sugar and stir over a low heat until it has dissolved completely. Don’t boil the jam before the sugar has dissolved or it may crystallise during storage. Once the sugar has dissolved bring the jam to a rapid but steady boil and boil until it reaches a temperature of between 105°C and 110°C. After about 15 minutes your jam should have become more viscous and clear and you will need to see whether setting point has been reached. This is called the ‘wrinkle test’. Remove the saucer from the freezer. Take the pan off the heat, spoon a little jam onto the plate and leave until completely cold. Then push it across the plate with your forefinger. It should wrinkle up if it’s ready. If it only wrinkles slightly, pop the saucer back in the freezer and bring the jam back to the boil and boil for a few more minutes. Skim any scum from the top of the jam and pour it into the prepared jars. Cover the surface of the jam with waxed discs, waxside down, and either quickly cover each jar with a dampened round of cellophane and rubber band or leave to go cold before covering with cellophane or a screw-top lid. Sealing the jars well prevents the build-up of condensation under the lid, which could lead to mould.

Calne & Marlborough groups collaborate at the

Calne Music & Arts Festival BACKGROUND

August to continue with this work and have recently returned.

In May this year Calne Community Area Fairtrade Group hosted a Fairtrade Event at Calne Town Hall. Mr Baai Jabang, the Director of TARUD (Trust Agency for Rural Development) and the Marlborough Brandt Group’s (MBG) partner NGO in Gunjur, in The Gambia, talked about the mango industry and its potential. He was appointed two years ago as Director of this NGO with which the Marlborough Brandt Group has worked since it was set up in 1997. He is responsible for their development programme in Gunjur and the Kombo South region of The Gambia.

For the first six months of the programme, and while in The Gambia, the group split to addressing three different projects within the Thriving Through Venture programme. Some researched the Mango business and marketing potential, others learnt photographic skills under a professional photographer, and applied that to taking images of older people and people at their daily work in Wiltshire and in the Gambia, and others interviewed these elderly people and then documented their response to these interviews under the mentoring of a professional writer.

The Marlborough Fairtrade Group with colleagues from Tesco and a new Charity “Thriving Through Venture” are exploring the potential for exporting mangoes from The Gambia to UK under Fairtrade conditions and where there are tens of thousands of trees 90% of whose fruit simply goes to waste.

The Thriving Through Venture Programme Dr Nick Maurice OBE founder of the Marlborough Brandt Group and Marlborough Fairtrade

The young people from Wiltshire travelled to The Gambia during

Fresh Dog Food company, Poppy’s Picnic, takes Wiltshire produce worldwide Local Melksham business Poppy’s Picnic has a simple ethos: to make it easier for more people to feed fresh food to their pets. It produces nutritionally balanced, fresh frozen raw meals for dogs, handmade in the heart of Wiltshire. Containing no fillers, additives or preservatives, their easy-to-feed meals are the closest to what a dog would choose to eat in the wild. Founder Dylan Watkins was inspired to change the way he fed much-loved Miniature Schnauzer Poppy, ditching dried kibble and developing his own nourishing and wholesome fresh meals, after overhauling his own diet. Dylan Watkins said: “We think so much about looking after our own bodies, but often the health and eating experience of our four-legged friends is an afterthought. We strongly believe that our dogs – and soon cats – should experience the benefits of eating fresh, tasty meals with quality ingredients that can help alleviate allergies, increase energy levels and improve overall conditioning, all with the happy consequence of smaller, less odorous poos!” After a great deal of research and having used every utensil in his kitchen to develop the meals, Poppy’s Picnic was officially launched in October 2016. The company subsequently received four offers in the Dragons’ Den, overachieved in a crowdfunding campaign, sold internationally to Asia and is currently shortlisted for five industry prizes, having already won ‘Best Start-Up’ at the Wiltshire Business Awards 2018.

meals are handmade by local, 4th generation butchers, our garden fresh vegetables are grown in nearby fields, and our new production site will be in the middle of beautiful countryside and provide local employment opportunities. I’m excited for this next stage which will help us to improve the health of many more dogs and cats around the world – one bowl at a time!” A proud Wiltshire resident, Dylan said: “We’re very much a Wiltshire business. Our

The company now plans to use some of its crowdfunding money to open a production facility near Melksham. This will enable it to expand its product range to include cat food, and produce more products for export. 64

S K R O W E R I F e n o y r e v e r o f Aren't fun Fireworks season can be a frightening time for many pets. Unexpected loud bangs can make them very anxious, but we can help them cope: What can you do to help your pet? • Keep them inside – if you know your pet becomes anxious during firework displays then it is best to keep them indoors during the evenings a few days before and after an advertised display or a neighbour’s bonfire. When pets are outside there’s a risk that loud bangs and flashing lights may cause them to flee from the garden. Keeping them indoors will provide the best cover from scary noises and keep them safe. • Walk them in the daylight – this minimises the chance of getting surprised by loud

66

noises when out on a walk. • Create a safe place – drawn curtains muffle outside noise and flashing lights. Put the radio or TV on to mask the sound of fireworks and make a den for them to hide in should they become nervous. Place soft pillows and blankets around it to dampen outside noise. • Keep them company – try not to leave your pets at home on their own when fireworks are planned. They will feel safer and less fearful in your company. • Act natural! – Pets pick up on their owners’ anxieties too, so it is important to go about your normal routine calmly. • Reward calm behaviour and ignore fearful behaviour – reinforcing calm behaviour

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER SEPTEMBER 2018 2018

with food, treats or cuddles helps to make firework night a positive experience. Remember to resist the urge to comfort your pet if they show signs of anxiety as this will only exacerbate their fear. If your pet is very anxious you can try… • Calming pheromone diffusers – plug-in room diffusers or sprays such as Adaptil for dogs and Feliway for cats emit a calming odourless smell which can help them feel relaxed in their home. Start using these products at least 48 hours before any fireworks are likely to start. Spray your pet’s bedding, crate or safe place 15 minutes before allowing access to the area.

• Nutraceuticals (food supplements) – such as Zylkene and Kalm-Aid can be given daily over a period of time to help pets feel more settled around Bonfire night. • Desensitisation CDs – Noise phobia desensitisation CDs can be useful to slowly acclimatise your pet to loud bangs and crashes. Begin playing them in the weeks running up to the 5th November. Reward calm behaviour and ignore signs of anxiety to slowly help your pet get used to the sound of fireworks. • Medicines – If the above options have not worked or your pet is particularly anxious we can use anxietyreliving sedative medicines to help them through the worst of it.

Loud noises can take pets by surprise and some might escape or run off. It is therefore important to make sure your pet can be identified easily if lost by means a collar and ID tag, or better still by a microchip. It’s now a legal requirement for dogs to be microchipped and contact details kept up to date with the database register. Microchipped pets have a much better chance of being reunited with their rightful families should they be found by someone else. Fireworks can still be enjoyed and hopefully these tips can make the firework season a less stressful time for you and your pet.

CORIA NDER Clear Skin Aids Digestion Soothes Adds a warm, spicy flavour to food Increases Libido Assists Weight Loss Treats Spasms Acts as a Deodorant

Coriander is perhaps best known as a spice in food but it has many other properties as an essential oil. Did you know that if you apply Coriander oil directly to your skin (mixed with your favourite moisturiser) you’ll start to see the cleansing properties contribute to a clear complexion and better looking skin? In fact, this oil works very similarly to Lavender as they share several of the same chemical constituents so if you are out of Lavender then reach for this for it’s amazing, soothing benefits. ADD SOME TO YOUR RUN! Sometimes we can get out of our usual routine during the summer months as life gets in the way of running. You may be feeling like you’ve lost your running mojo as your workouts have plateaued; you’ve got a bit bored with the same run and have looked for excuses to not go out. Autumn is the perfect time to add some new life into your runs and by understanding why each run is important it can help you focus, add some spice into your weekly running routine and help you find your mojo again. Long Run If you are training for a specific goal you should be building up your base miles by adding in a long run into your weekly routine. These runs should be long enough that they leave you feeling a little fatigued but not too long that they leave you doubting your ability and losing confidence. I’ve found that there is nothing better than a Sunday morning easy run to make you feel good. Try and stick to the 10% a week increase rule and every 4th week, drop the mileage back down so you give yourself chance to recover and adapt. 72

Fartlek

Hills

A fartlek workout is a base run that mixes in bursts of speed and it’s a fantastic way to add a bit of spice into your run if you have not run at speed before or if the feeling of speed scares you. During your run, choose a land mark, lampposts work well, and run at speed in-between each lamppost, slow the pace down between the next 2, then you can walk between the next 2. Repeat the routine, run at speed, then slower, then walk. Mix it up a bit, there are no hard and fast rules with this run, fartlek is Swedish for “speed play” so just play around with different speeds over different distances.

Hill training is an excellent way to focus on your running form as well as getting over the fear of a hill. Find an incline that challenges you a little bit, start at the bottom and run up with effort, as soon as you get to the top, slow down, try not to completely stop and gently recover until you get to the bottom. Get your breath back and do it again. You can add a few of these into your normal route, you don’t have to do too many, it just helps mix things up and you will find quite quickly that you get stronger on the flat bits of your run.

Tempo Run A tempo run is a brilliant way to increase your ability to run faster for longer as these types of runs help build up your “threshold” of being able to run at a faster pace over a longer distance. Start your run (could be 3 miles) with a mile warm up at an easy pace. Your middle segment is then run just at a pace that you would find it hard to have a conversation but not too hard that you cannot talk. Your last mile should be a warm down mile, run at the same speed as your first mile. As you become stronger you can increase the distances of these types of runs but again obey the 10% rule.

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2018

The main thing is to try something different and see what works for you, have some fun, push yourself in a safe environment and see what happens. Have a go at recruiting some friends to run with as this always helps you stay motivated as you encourage each other through the tough bits. BOOKReview 1

Holding by Graham Norton

This is a fine debut novel from the TV host. A body is unearthed in a small Irish village and PJ Collins, the local policeman, must dig through the characters’ past to find the killer. This is an exciting plot set against the humdrum of village life. The characters are believable in their mundanity, the tone of their conversation, peppered with occasional profanity, secrets and gossip, is a joy to read.

The story is told with observational wit and flair but doesn’t rely too much on overplaying the Irish accent when reading. There are moments of levity and hilarity, all farcical but undeniably funny. If you’re a fan of the author, I highly recommend listening to the audio version that’s available as Norton’s narration brings the characters to life, full of lilt and accent. Published by Hodder Paperbacks ISBN 1444791982

3

The Whistler by John Grisham Another legal blockbuster from the King of thriller writing. Grisham takes on corruption in the judiciary with his usual dramatic flair. A dishonest Judge, a young investigator and a whistle-blowing informant form the backbone of this story. Grisham never fails to deliver a first-class story and intense courtroom

76

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2018

drama but this time he goes behind the scenes and delves into the social ills of the world we live in, examining injustice in the courtroom and beyond. A riveting read with a very strong female character, enjoyable, predictable and satisfying for any fan of American legal thrillers. Published by Hodder Paperbacks ISBN 1444791095

2

The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena Another major new talent to emerge in the last few years. Lapena has put herself at the forefront of the ‘domestic noir’ with this psychological narrative.

It begins with an average dinner party, you are drawn into the scene, relationships and tensions. A couple leave their child to go next door, taking the baby monitor and checking in every half hour. Not enough to prevent a nightmare unravelling. This is a psychological thriller that pulls you into the worst possible situation and drags you through a multitude of twists and turns. The tag line, ‘People are capable of almost anything’ really doesn’t prepare you for the shocking revelations within the pages. It leads you to question how well you know those around you and how much stress it takes to push people to the edge. Published by Corgi ISBN 0552173142

PHONE

scams

I don’t want to scaremonger, but recently, I have been made aware of some more phone scams doing the rounds.

I visited a lively group recently who were well up to fending off nuisance phone calls which seem to happen in ever increasing numbers. But these scammers are crafty folk! By introducing themselves and appearing to be “friendly” they can gain your confidence and before you know it you may have told them your full name, address, bank details, PIN number and even the time of day that you will be home and by default, the time when the house will be empty – and emptied of your valuables! Now I don’t want to scare anyone, but if you receive an unexpected call from anyone purporting to be from the bank, building society, Council, Water Authority, Microsoft…..the list goes on….. you have a choice. Put the phone down on them immediately or, if you are concerned that it may be genuine, ask for the matter to be put into a letter. Genuine callers will always respect your wishes and they will have your address on their file without needing to ask you and will be happy to post details of the matter to you. Never be afraid of being rude to cold callers – they have invaded your privacy after all! Meanwhile, I am around for general help and support on a wide variety of issues including transport, mobility and safety around the home and reducing the feeling of loneliness. Give me a call on 07557 922020 and leave a message. I only work part time but will get back to you as soon as possible.

ENTREPRENEUR JOHN WILLIAMS TO RUN HALF MARATHON IN MEMORY OF HIS FATHER John Williams, co-founders of one of Wiltshire’s most successful heating and plumbing companies, has been pounding the streets over the summer training for the Chippenham half marathon in memory of his father. Steve Williams, well known and loved in the town, passed away suddenly in December 2017 due to heart failure at the age of 75. John said: “Losing my dad so suddenly and so unexpectedly was devastating for me, my mum, my wife, my children – everyone in our family. Anyone who has lost someone suddenly will know how your life is blown apart by such a loss. As time has gone by I’ve felt that doing something in his memory is a positive acknowledgement of the love we all have for him.” With the support of his wife Debbie, mum Pauline and his daughters Georgina and Katie, John pledged to raise at least £500 for the British Heart Foundation by taking part in the event on Sunday September 9. He’s already reached more than £1,000. The Chippenham Half Marathon took place on Sunday September 9 and John’s JustGiving page for anyone who still wishes to make a donation in memory of his dad is here - https://bit.ly/2twjpOS John Williams Heating Services is based on the Bumpers Farm Industrial Estate in Chippenham. GARDEN Themes

Jobs for October • Prune your climbing roses and tie in the stems before autumn winds cause damage • Harvest apples, pears, grapes and nuts • Mow the lawns and trim hedges in mild areas • Lay new turf where needed • Plant out your spring cabbages • Move tender plants into a greenhouse or conservatory

Have a go! • Set up a garden structure to support your new Clematis plant. • You can use a series of horizontal or vertical wires, or use a pre-made trellis attached to the wall to provide support. It’s important to ensure that the structure is strong because although the plants will be small at first, they will grow and can become heavy with age. • Make sure you tie in new shoots gently with garden twine.

Top tip Autumn is the ideal time to plant out your Clematis Plants. These can give fences, walls and trellis the ‘wow’ factor or simply screen any unsightly areas of your garden. Make sure they have a framework to scramble over.

TOYOTA C-HR

AUTO BIOGRAPHY

The Toyota C-HR is a car you quite easily may not even have heard of. It's very much in the shadows of its rivals, like the Nissan Qashqai.

By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist. Tweeting @carwriteups

You can pick up a new C-HR for £21,595, which is more than £2,300 than the entry-level Qashqai, but the model we have on test here is the hybrid version with Dynamic trim – the top of the range. It costs £28,615 – so it had better be worth it! The Toyota C-HR is a car you quite easily may not even have heard of. It's very much in the shadows of its rivals, like the Nissan Qashqai.

84

Whilst the car is a similar shape and size to the Qashqai, its roof slopes towards the rear far more so than the Nissan (think BMW X4/X6) and that means there's less room inside. But it's got very aggressive styling and even the entry-level models have a lot of kit with it. The Dynamic comes with rear camera, touchscreen, DAB radio, adaptive cruise control, dualzone automatic air conditioning, sat-nav, smart entry and pushbutton start, park assist – and that really is skimming the surface.

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2018

The C-HR shares a lot of its DNA with the Toyota Prius, so it's only to be expected that the C-HR is available as a hybrid version which cuts fuel consumption to 72.4 miles per gallon. Its electric motor blends with a 1.8 litre fourcylinder petrol engine, producing 122 PS and gets from a 0-62 mph in 11 seconds. It also comes with a one-speed gearbox and, if that's raised your eyebrows, don't worry – it's CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) and its use is on the increase. That said, the lack of a traditional engine rev will take some getting used to, unless you're used to driving electrics or hybrids.

In the C-HR, it does feel a little sluggish, even though its performance is comparable with the Qashqai and other rivals. Whilst the C-HR is very well designed for a comfortable ride, the hybrid models are heavier, meaning you'll get a more relaxed ride in the non-hybrid models. Nevertheless, Toyota has done a good job. The extra weight of the hybrid also means it doesn't handle quite as well as the purely-petrolpowered models, but this won't be noticeable most of the time, unless you're really looking to throw it round corners. If you are, the chances are you'll be looking at a performance model and you won't be after a hybrid. The interior improves Toyota's reputation of dullness and it's a nice place to be, though you won't struggle to find better interiors elsewhere. There's plenty of room in the front, but the sloping roof means you won't want to be in the back if you're tall.

PROs 'n' CONs Boot space is also disappointing in comparison with its rivals, with the folding seats not as convenient. To sum up, the hybrid is great for fuel saving but adds plenty of drawbacks. And, coupled with the Dynamic trim, it makes it rather too expensive. The sheer amount of equipment means one of the lesser models should suffice for most. And, unless your focus is fuel economy, so too should the petrol engine – without the hybrid.

n o s r e d n a S Ray

THE TOWN CRIER MEETS….

How on earth can a packet of cigarettes help you learn to drive? Well, veteran driving instructor Ray Sanderson has all the answers – not surprising after 54 years of helping thousands of people pass their test. Ray, from Malmesbury, started out in 1965 – and a lot has changed since then. No longer can you shout at pupils, or stab them in the hand with a drawing pin (yes, really!) if they drive holding the gear stick instead of the steering wheel. “It’s changed dramatically – cars have changed, the volume of traffic on the road has changed,” he said. “When you think my first car was a Morris 1000 and you go from one of those to what we’ve got now - my current car is a Suzuki hybrid and it’s got so many gizmos on it. Learning to drive is more complex now.” Ray, 73, who served on Malmesbury Town Council for 34 years until last year, with two stints as mayor in 1987 and 2012, says there have been plenty of funny moments, and a few scary ones. “I remember on one occasion in the 70s when I had a Mini teaching a rather large lady. We were turning left out of a junction on to a main road and there was a rather large ditch on the left hand side and she forgot to straighten the car up - so we landed with the car on its side in a rather wide, deep ditch full of water. “She was 16 or 17 stone and I was a mere seven or eight and I remember being smothered by her body weight and then people trying to get us out. By that time the car was filling with water. I remember thinking that was a close one!” The lady in question did go on to pass her test eventually. Other characters have included the colour-blind pupil who got someone else to take his test for him (he didn’t get away with it), the foreign princess who was tempted to offer a £3,000 cash bribe to the examiner and the TV journalist who was so tall he had to poke his head out of the sunroof of the Mini. Ray, who bought Malmesbury School of Motoring in 1972, reckons the average number of accidents is one bump a year when he’s teaching. “There’s nothing you can do, although the car’s dual controlled, if a learner decides to brake suddenly irrespective of the speed they’re doing or what road we’re on,” he said.

98

The Town Crier Magazine | OCTOBER 2018

“Years ago we could put our hand on the steering wheel and steer with them, or put our hand on top of theirs on the gear lever but you can’t do that now, it’s taboo. Some people responded well to you raising your voice but we’re not allowed to do that now. We’re not driving instructors now, we’re driving coaches.” Ray, who is married to Margaret, also a former driving instructor, and has three children and four grandchildren, says another highlight came along in the late sixties, when the driving school was one of those called on to help work out the positioning of Swindon’s Magic Roundabout with the help of tractor tyres and a certain amount of trial and error. Outside of work he was involved in the Round Table and as part of a team of three broke the Round Britain driving record by taking a Range Rover nonstop round the entire coastline in 72 hours. He is now in the Rotary Club of Royal Wootton Bassett and is showing no signs of slowing down, although he says he may consider reducing his hours in the next couple of years. “My top tip for drivers would be to keep within the law and stay patient – I hate road rage and tail-gating. Be cool, calm and collected and drive sensibly.” And lastly, what about the cigarettes? “Often you’d have a pupil who smoked. I’d pull them up on a hill and say, ‘can I have your cigarettes, please’ and I’d put them under the back wheel of the car. I’d say ‘now you’ll move away properly without rolling backwards, won’t you?’. And you know, it worked!”
