Hello Just a quick word to remind you all that I am around for general help and support on a wide variety of issues including transport, mobility and safety around the home and reducing the feeling of loneliness. Give me a call on 07557 922020 and leave a message. I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Big Pledge is back Fontanella's lively concert programmes span six hundred years of music, celebrating the long history of the recorder from the medieval period right up to the present day. They perform on a specialist array of instruments of every shape and size, from the beautiful 15-piece renaissance consort to the fascinating set of contemporary Paetzold ‘square’ basses; their aim is to combine an awareness of the most recent scholarship in renaissance and early repertoire with performances of more contemporary works, as well as including their own unique arrangements of music from other genres. Programmes often include all of these elements, usually with a historical or festival theme. For more information visit: www.mamsmusic.co.uk

Malmesbury League of Friends elects new Chairman David Hide has been elected as the chairman of Malmesbury League of Friends (MLOF) in succession to Robin Clark. At their recent AGM, Alison Lewis was elected as vice-chair, with David Rutherford continuing as treasurer, and Wendy Harris elected as secretary. Robin Clark has retired after over 50 years as a trustee and 20 years as chairman. He commented: “ Over that time, there have been many changes both in Malmesbury and to the League. When I took over as chairman, our funds were modest and we had a hospital which always needed our help. So we were constantly fund raising. Recent generous legacies have strengthened our financial position and enabled us to make some substantial donations to both charitable organisations and individuals.” David Hide, who was vice chairman, has been a trustee for five years. He has lived in Malmesbury for over 40 years and is a former chairman of Malmesbury Tennis Club, where he still plays regularly, and a member of Malmesbury Concert Band. He ran his own public relations consultancy in the town until his retirement five years ago. He said: “ I am greatly honoured to be elected as chairman in succession to Robin Clark, to whom MLOF owes so much. Although we no longer have our own hospital, there are still considerable demands on our funds, including the Malmesbury Primary Care Centre, Athelstan House, locally based charities and needy individuals.” Robin Clark (seated centre) with his successor David Hide ( standing immediately behind him) and all the MLOF trustees.

UMMER is on its way at The Pear Tree with our beautiful wild flower garden beginning to really blossom thanks to the hard work of managing director Anne Young (photo below). Also our grounds are now home to a new ‘flower’ – an amazing sculpture in the shape of a large poppy made from horseshoes which overlooks the fields near the hotel which were once home to a First World War ‘Remount Depot’. It commemorates those animals and Purton residents who contributed to the war effort but, until recently, were forgotten.

It’s estimated about 500 horses and mules came through the Purton depot and were part of the one million animals known to have gone through the depots across the country during the war. Records show 250,000 animals died and about 60,000 came home. The depot was recently discovered by Purton resident and former RAF Aircraft Engineer Robert Lloyd (46), known as Bob, who has spent the past seven years exhaustively researching the role Purton parish played in the Great War. He found out Purton had a ‘Remount Depot’ which was one of 11 in the area known as ‘Southern Command’. The depot was managed by William Robson and his two sons. Bob sponsored the sculpture and unveiled it with descendants of William Robson in April (photo above). We’re also welcoming summer with some special offers including a Friday night dinner and Bed & Breakfast special for two from £175 and a twonight break during the week from £330 per couple. The latter includes two nights in a luxury executive room with a spa bath and dinner on both nights in the conservatory restaurant.

People travel a long way to see Stompin Dave whenever he’s performing, fortunately all we need to do is hike out to Brinkworth! Doors open 7.30pm, show starts 8pm. Tickets: Adults £8, Concs £7, Age Recommendation 01666 510545 or 01666 510045. This is a Rural Arts event.

Natural path to happiness gets results Sunshine for the soul: 30 Days Wild benefits health and wellbeing

© Matthew Roberts

© Nick Upton

The impact of taking part in 30 Days Wild has been tracked by academics at the University of Derby. Their study found that people who did something ‘wild’ each day for a month, felt happier, healthier and more connected to nature. From walking barefoot in the park to feeding garden birds, all sorts of activities proved positive for people – with added benefits for the natural world too.

T

HIS June, it’s all about nature - for everybody, everywhere, every day with The Wildlife Trusts’ annual challenge: 30 Days Wild People will be encouraged to enjoy the nature on their doorstep, as well as the ‘great outdoors’, with inspiring ‘Random Acts of Wildness’: practical, fun and quirky ideas for connecting with the wild around us. Spend an evening star gazing, build a bughouse, become a stream sleuth, enjoy mindfulness in a meadow, or even sit in the garden, sipping a G&T and watch butterflies! People can spend a few minutes, or a few hours each day enjoying nature - how they do it is up to them.

© Matthew Roberts

And it’s official - a daily dose of nature, even in bite size chunks, is good for you.

16

The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2017

Dr Miles Richardson, Director of Psychology, who led the study, said: “The impact of 30 Days Wild adds to the compelling argument for bringing nature into our everyday lives. Two months after taking part in 30 Days Wild, there was a 30 per cent increase in the number of people who reported their health as excellent. Last year’s results also show people’s happiness continued to improve after 30 Days Wild ended, which illustrates its sustained impact.

This is important as it is happiness and connecting with nature that influence improvements in health. Our study also shows that those who benefitted most were younger adults and those who weren’t ‘nature lovers’.”

This year 30 Days Wild is revelling in the glory of traditional meadows which bloom with wildflowers throughout June. 'Unimproved' pastures and meadows with their characteristic wealth of wild plants and animals are rare and fragmented – occupying just 5% of the area that they occupied in 1945. Wiltshire Wildlife Trust has several beautiful meadow sites including Lower Moor Farm, Blakehill Farm and Coombe Bissett Down. Apply for a free 30 Days Wild pack, download the phone app or look online for those inspirational Random Acts of Wildness. 30 Days Wild packs include a packet of wildflower seeds, activity sheets, a calendar to record adventures, stickers, and a poster. Schools will get a large deck of ‘Random Acts of Wildness’ cards for inspiring ideas. Sign up and share the fun of #30DaysWild on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Wildlife Trusts across the UK will be running wild events for all the family throughout June. Lucy McRobert at The Wildlife Trusts says: “Last year thousands of people carried out 1.8 million Random Acts of Wildness during 30 Days Wild. That’s 1.8 million precious moments that brought people closer to nature and enhanced their lives. The Wildlife Trusts aim to double that number this year – and we hope that the connections people make with the wild around them will ensure that it is better protected for the future too.” For more information visit: www.mywildlife.org.uk/ 30DaysWild/

Oakmead Clinic N

UTRITIONAL THERAPIST Helen Adams left behind a successful global career in the financial services sector to follow her passion – helping others to live happy and healthy lives through good nutrition.

The 58 year old set up Oakmead Clinic after she told her personal story to her hairdresser who remarked she ought to turn her extensive knowledge into a business to help others. “I realised that was exactly what I should do,” Helen said and Oakmead Clinic, based in Chippenham, was created. There Helen offers personalised health programmes, health MOTs and a complimentary 30-minute discovery consultation. So why did Helen leave the world of IT and make such a change in her life and career? “The truth is I developed my knowledge through necessity, “Helen said. “My son, now 20, was born four weeks’ premature and had digestive issues from birth. It was a constant struggle for him and for us to help him eat and live healthily.

“When he was 11 years old he became very, very sick. After a year of being pushed from pillar to post with no answers or solutions to his problem, we paid to see a consultant and he was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome.” Helen started to explore how she could help her son Tom get better and started to educate herself. For Helen, she felt the medical profession were failing her family and using the phrase ‘it’s complicated’ to deal with her son’s situation. She was told it was a ‘mental’ thing but therapies didn’t work. “My research suggested homeopathy and nutrition were the two areas with the most potential to help Tom and also, for me, the most logical. I looked at biochemistry and after trial and error, with Tom eating very little we found one food which helped him more than any other. Red peppers. They have more vitamin C than an orange, they taste sweet and many children don’t see them as vegetables. “Discovering this was a turning point. Tom regularly eats red peppers and that one food helped him – and us – to improve his quality of life.”

In helping others as she’s helped her own son, Helen creates a bespoke treatment programme for each of her clients. Anyone interested in having support will fill in a questionnaire about their medical history from birth. From that Helen will look for common themes, threads or behaviours which may impact on health and come up with a plan which will be implemented at a client’s own pace. “The aim is to change a client’s situation by taking small steps. It might be just looking at breakfast at first or carrying out a series of food intolerance tests to see if there’s an obvious problem.” Helen is qualified in functional medicine, has a naturopath nutrition diploma, is a senior associate of the Royal Society of Medicine – a full list of her qualifications are available on her website: www.oakmeadclinic.co.uk

WOMAD Thursday 27 and Sunday 30 July Charlton Park, near Malmesbury

The world’s festival WOMAD UK is back for its thirty-fifth year as a vibrant, joyful and timely reminder that in a world where division and isolation are increasingly prominent, music can still bring people together from all around the globe, just as it did for 52,000 people at WOMAD Chile in March. As well as musicians from every imaginable background WOMAD will play host to its usual dizzying mix of art, dance, food, wellbeing, discussion and family activities, all taking place in the spirit of fun, diversity and originality that has made it an institution among summer festivals. WOMAD’s Global Festival Director Chris Smith said: “This is the perfect collection of artists to kick off WOMAD 2017. Some new faces and some old friends returning after a long absence, all of whom I’m certain will demonstrate the extent to which WOMAD still, after thirty-five years, has the power to surprise people and give them a musical experience they’ve never had before. There are brand new ways for festivalgoers to chill out in style at the WOMAD Spa and a nature-tastic theme of Earth,

Gardening

The humble Viola by Rachael Leverton

Violas are a smaller-flowered version of a pansy but are more reliably perennial. They come in an amazingly wide range of colours and flower patterns. They are also incredibly easy to propagate. To make more viola plants simply cut off 7-8cm / 3 inches of the shoot tips at any time of year. Remove the lower leaves and root them into sandy compost. When they take, repot the little plantlets into 7.5cm / 3 inch pots of multi-purpose compost until they become established. They can then be planted out in the garden. The whole process only takes a matter of a few weeks ! 22

The Town Crier Magazine | JUNE 2017

Violas are happy in sun, or dappled shade and prefer soil that doesn't become too dry, so in fact they are the perfect plant for most British gardens and will provide masses of colour at ankleheight. I have many favourites. There is a pretty purple and yellow one in my garden called Heartsease which migrated from a neighbour's garden and has selfseeded everywhere. I added Grey Owl, which is pale blue and soft yellow, and I propagated one from my mother-in-law's garden, called Irish Molly, which is various shades of subtle green, though I've seen other colours also being sold under that name! This year I have an exquisitely pretty fragrant variety

called Sorbet 'Yellow Frost'. I can't recommend it highly enough. The thing is, they are so easy to grow that you can go to any garden centre and pick your favourite colour combination. Whether you say vee-oh-la or vyoh-la, this lovely little flower will add music to your garden display. Happy Gardening.

Summer

Midsummer’s Day The longest day of the year comes all too soon in my opinion. Just three weeks after the arrival of summer on 1st June, the summer solstice (21st June) has passed and we have winter to look forward to again.

Our ancestors - in awe of the power of the sun - celebrated the summer solstice by lighting bonfires to protect against evil spirits. They also built stone circles, set in alignment with the rising of the sun, such as those at Stonehenge.

It’s all to do with which calendar we follow. The astronomical calendar has summer starting in March when we put our clocks forward an hour, whereas the meteorological summer runs from June to August.

Midsummer’s Eve was a time for fairies (hence Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream) and flowers, which were placed under the pillow to induce important dreams about future loves.

This mixture of calendars is indicative of the mixed-up celebration Midsummer’s Day has become. Like many other ancient traditions, it has its roots in pagan Britain but has been adopted and adapted to fit in with Christian beliefs.

Christians celebrate the birth of St. John the Baptist on Midsummer’s Day (24th June). Mystery plays, based on biblical events, are performed at this time of year, particularly in cathedral cities such as Chester, Lincoln and York.

Stress free holiday packing

Your long awaited and well deserved holiday is only a few days away, but first you have to pack! For many people, packing a suitcase can be stressful. How do you achieve that perfect holiday capsule wardrobe? We asked local House of Colour Stylist, Karen Hayter for some top tips: Skincare & make-up Remember to keep your skincare and make-up to under 100mg so that you’ll be OK at the airport. Where necessary, decant into good quality travel bottles. With make-up, you can probably get away with waterproof mascara, a coloured eyeliner, your favourite lipstick, bronzer and a kabuki brush. If you’re reluctant to leave foundation at home, opt for a dual mineral compact. It’s especially brilliant in hot weather. Mix and match Once you know your best colours, and the styles that work for you, packing a capsule wardrobe becomes easier. It’s not an exact science, but for your average beach holiday, here’s a rough guide: • 3 camis and 2 long-sleeved tops in great colours, 1 or 2 neutral cardigans or wraps • 1 or 2 casual dresses or skirts, 1 smarter dress • 3 pairs neutral coloured leggings or trousers • 2 swimsuits or bikinis, a squashable hat, sarongs, scarves or pashminas • Depending on your style, you may want to substitute 1 or 2 of the skirts or casual dresses or trousers for a couple of pairs of shorts. Believe it or not, as long as you’ve got the colours right, you can create well over 50 outfits from these 21 items and that’s before you start adding in your favourite jewellery and an amazing belt. By the way, jewellery is another opportunity to use your best colours or choose plain metals and let the colour of your clothes take centre stage. One quick tip about patterns…. Try not to overdo them. If you’ve brought patterned tops, choose non-patterned trousers or skirts.

Get rolling You’re aiming for 3 rolled sausages. Start by laying out your tops and dresses, one on top of the next, with the most crushable fabrics on the bottom. Then roll them into a sausage with the most crushable on the outside. The crease-prone items will be padded out by the less fussy fabrics in the middle. Trousers and skirts go in the second sausage. Everything else goes in the third - swimwear, sarongs, pashminas and scarves. Large jersey infinity scarves are great for holidays. They come in a huge range of colours and will take you into the evening by doubling as a bolero. Shoes It’s tempting to pack shoes for every occasion. But actually, you only need 4 pairs - flip flops, flats, heels and those contoured `fit flops’ that also come in sparkly finishes for the evening. And talking about sparkle, how about shoe clips? They’ll transform daytime flats into evening glamour in an instant. Follow these simple tips, don’t forget to add your underwear and a beach towel and everything will fit into a hand luggage size suitcase. Karen Hayter is a House of Colour Stylist based in Corsham. “I love helping clients to find the most amazing version of themselves. Looking your best isn’t reserved for the rich and famous. Everyone can use colour and style to enhance their own natural colouring, body shape and personality.” Karen offers small friendly classes in her home studio. A Good Read Tom Gates: Dogzombies Rule (for now) by Liz Pichon .........................................................................................

The eleventh instalment in this hugely popular series will not disappoint fans. Tom is once more trying to cope with life at school, his annoying sister, Delia, and plotting to make his band, Dogzombies, the best band in the world ever. Tom and his friends decide that if their band is going to be successful they need to do more than play at an old people’s home. So they set about trying to make it big by doing what all bands do: writing new songs and producing a music video. This doesn’t prove to be as easy as they had thought as they struggle to find lyrics that rhyme. It also turns out that music videos take a lot of planning and are made harder when an animal runs off with your dad’s phone during filming! An enticing mixture of text and cartoons this book is a nice easy read, despite being over 200 pages long. Aimed at 9-12 year olds it certainly isn’t the most challenging book as far as vocabulary is concerned and there are many readers of the series that are younger. However, if you have a reluctant reader – especially a boy – this is an excellent choice.

Blackberry Wine by Joanne Harris

......................................................................................... Now that the summer is upon us what better excuse do we need than to escape to the hot summers of the 1970s and a gentler pace of life in both Yorkshire and the South of France? Published just one year after her hit novel Chocolat this split-time novel will transport you to the magic of the countryside and the simple pleasure a bottle of wine. Londoner Jay is a writer who published his greatest work - ‘Jackapple Joe’ - 10 years ago, but has since struggled to replicate this success. Travelling between the present and the summers of Jay’s childhood we learn of the unlikely friendship he struck up with an old man called Jackapple Joe. From him Jay learns about the magic of nature and the secrets of homemade wine. In the present Jay returns to Yorkshire hoping to find some sense of meaning and inspiration. Instead he finds only some old bottles of Joe’s special brew. The wine has more of an effect on him than he bargained for and under the ruse of working on his next novel Jay buys a house in the French village of Lansquenetsous-Tannes (the setting for Chocolat). In reality, he is escaping his city life and his girlfriend, and his sense of failure. As the wine works it magic Joe finds his inspiration. But is it the wine, or is it the ghost of an old friend? Magic can be found in many unlikely places: the magic of nature; the magic of friendship; and the magic of belief in ourselves.
