ugust seems to have come and gone in a flash and here we are in September. The hot weather seems to have deserted us too and it feels like summer is over already. Hopefully September will bring the return of the sun before we head into the autumn! August is also a quiet month at The Town Crier with staff and many folks away on their summer holidays, however it does give us a bit of breathing space for our busy months leading up to Christmas.

Chippenham entrepreneurs John and Debbie Williams of John Williams Heating Services are calling on local businesses to support three proactive school children who want a better library at their primary school. Lily, Freja and Jacob are all students at St Peter’s C of E Academy in Lords Mead. They decided to ask local businesses to help fund creating a better library for their school – and their letters formed part of a ‘persuasive’ writing task. At the moment the library is more of a corridor and is badly in need of updating. The proposed project will cost about £11,000 and money is also be raised by the Friends of St Peter’s Academy. Mark Everett, the headteacher of St. Peter's said: “Our children really enjoy reading and have loved some of books to bits! We would love to update our library facilities for the children and are really grateful to John Williams Heating for kindly supporting us in this venture.” The school’s budget cannot stretch to refurbishing and updating the library space so students came up with the idea of asking ten businesses to donate £100 each towards the total cost. “We admire the proactive stand taken by these children,” Debbie Williams said. “They are not only showing their writing skills, they are doing it for the benefit of their school and the pupils of the future. “I’m asking other local businesses to dig deep and reward the efforts being made by these young students who are all about ten years old. Perhaps a business could sponsor a book case? We’re thrilled to be able to do our bit to support these young people.”

With a packed crowd, the slight drizzle of rain deterring no-one, we celebrated with Richard and his team, with a huge cheer, when Gareth opened the new showroom. Drinks and canapes ensued, with Gareth kindly signing posters and posing for what seemed like a million photographs. What a gentlemen and true star! ne of the questions I’m often asked as a gardener is ‘How do I trim my privet hedge?’ Privet hedges aren’t a particularly sexy subject for a gardening article, but hedge-trimming seems to cause a lot of angst so let me tackle it here.

I once spent Saturday afternoon in eye casualty because a small sharp twig flew into my eye while I was trimming a hedge. It hurt and took ages to heal properly so be warned. Before starting, remove any potential obstacles on the ground which might prove to be a trip hazard. Avoid using powered tools above shoulder height; instead use a sturdy step ladder set on stable ground. If your hedge trimmer is electric use a residual current device (RCD) for safety purposes, and don’t use it in damp conditions.

Privet is one of our most popular hedging plants. It has dense foliage which is green all year round, and it’s hardy which means it’s suited to a wide range of planting sites. It’s also available in a selection of varieties and root types, so there’s a Privet hedge to suit most gardens. Autumn is a good time to trim them because there’s little chance of disturbing any birds who might be nesting in them. Nesting season generally runs from March to early August.

When using shears, ensure that the top of the hedge is cut level and flat by keeping the blades of the shears parallel to the line of the hedge. When using a hedge trimmer, keep the blade parallel to the hedge and use a wide, sweeping action working from the bottom of the hedge upwards, so that the cut foliage falls away

One little trick I learned at a hedge-cutting course a few years ago is to cut hedges so that they are slightly tapered on both sides. This will mean the base is wider than the top and light can reach the bottom of the hedge, which means the hedge will be greener and look healthier.

If you have a small hedge like those outside terraced town houses, then hand-held hedge shears are fine, but for large hedges an electric or even a petrol hedgetrimmer is definitely easier. If you have one, give it a check over and make sure it’s sharp and well lubricated.

Top tips to ensure an even, symmetrical hedge: Straight edges are difficult to cut by eye. Use a taut horizontal string tied between two stout canes to act as a guide so you can cut the top of the hedge level. For vertical lines use canes or stakes pushed into the ground.

Safety should be paramount. Wear safety goggles and sturdy gloves. It’s not overkill.

PUTTING THE TOWN ON THE TOURIST MAP The new, mobile-friendly website has been developed in partnership with VisitWiltshire and Calne Our Place, an independent, voluntary group made up of residents, councillors, local business members, and Calne Town Council staff. The website is part of a bigger project set-up as the result of the group’s ambition to raise the town’s profile, increase tourism and economic spend, and in turn, help make Calne a better place to live. The website design is in keeping with Calne Our Place’s branding and offers users an integrated platform about Calne, which includes information on upcoming events, activities, food and drink offerings, bookable accommodation, shopping, arts and culture, special offers, inspiration ideas and advice on planning a visit. An enhanced itinerary planning tool is also available on the website, as well as a new promotional video, called Calne A to B.

NEW tourism website has been jointly launched by VisitWiltshire and Calne Our Place, offering visitors to the region a detailed description of what Calne has on offer. CALNE HERITAGE CENTRE The Calne Heritage Centre building was opened in 1905 as a purpose-built library, financed by the millionaire industrialist Andrew Carnegie. Situated in the heart of Calne’s historic Heritage Quarter, it has served as a heritage centre since 2004 and tells the story of aspects of Calne’s history in a series of attractive wall panels. These are supplemented by interactive computer screens and a varied programme of exhibitions that are presented throughout the year. The Centre houses a wealth of photographs and memorabilia and engages with the community, hosting visits by school classes and local groups. Members of staff also venture out into the community to give talks in a variety of venues. Research in response to queries about the Calne area is offered free of charge although donations are always welcome. The building is available for hire for meetings when the Centre is closed.

Run and staffed entirely by volunteers who will greet visitors in a welcoming manner, always ready to help, the Centre plays a vital role in raising awareness of Calne’s fascinating history. Working in partnership with other Calne organisations and participating in the regular community events in the town it is also an integral part of the present and concerned with the future. New Headmaster at St Margaret’s Mr Luke Bromwich is to become Headmaster of St Margaret’s Preparatory School, Calne in September following the retirement of Karen Cordon after 22 years. St Margaret’s is the sister school of St Mary’s, Calne and offers a co-educational experience for both boys and girls aged 3 -11. Stuffed Butternut Squash INGREDIENTS

1 medium butternut squash Olive oil Oregano Packet or vegetable rice Feta cheese 50g toasted pine nut 1 red pepper, chopped 50g pitted black olives A handful of sundried tomatoes 2 spring onions, chopped METHOD Preheat oven to 200Â°C / 180Â°C fan.

Cut the butternut squash in half length ways. Scoop all seeds out and score the flesh with a sharp knife. Season with salt & pepper and sprinkle with oregano, then drizzle with olive oil and place on a baking tray. Bake for 35 minutes. Chop a red pepper into chunks, drizzle with oil and add to the oven to roast. Cook the rice according to packet instructions and place into a large bowl. Mix the pinenuts, spring onion, sundried tomatoes, cooked red pepper and olives with the rice. Remove the butternut from the oven and stuff with the mixture. Top with crumbled feta and bake for a further 5 minutes until golden. Enjoy!

Black Bean Chilli INGREDIENTS 500g pack lean steak mince Large onion finely chopped 2tsp cumin powder 2 tsp ground coriander 1-2 tsp chilli powder 2 tsp paprika 1 beef stock cube 400g can chopped tomatoes Large squirt tomato puree 2 cans black beans METHOD Gently fry your onion in a splash of olive oil in a large flat pan. Seperately dry fry your mince until browned and broken up. Add all the spices and the onions to the mix. Add in the chopped tomatoes and 1 can of water, crumble in the stock cube and stir in a large squirt of tomato puree. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes. Stir in the drained black beans and further cook for 20 minutes until everything has reduced and is tender. Sprinkle with chopped corriander. Serve with rice or crispy tortillas, lime wedges, guacamole and sour cream. Chilli is even tastier if left overnight and eaten the next day!

Walnut-Stuffed BAKED APPLES

Fed up of ice creams? Why not try this recipe which is nice and easy to prepare and cook. Yummy too! Ingredients

Method

100g brown sugar

Preheat oven to 190C / Gas mark 5. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, walnuts, raisins, butter, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves.

75g walnuts 50g golden raisins 60g unsalted butter, cut into small cubes 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves 4 large eating apples 120ml fresh orange juice

Slice about 1cm off the top of each apple. Use a corer or a sharp knife to remove the core and seeds from inside of each apple but take care not to go all the way through. Arrange the apples, cavity side up, in a ceramic baking dish.

Fill each cavity with 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar-walnut mixture. Sprinkle remaining brown sugar-walnut mixture on top of apples. Pour the orange juice around apples. Bake the apples for 30 to 40 minutes or until they are tender. Rotate the baking dish halfway through the cooking time. Spoon the juices in the dish over apples and serve warm with ice cream or creme fraiche.

The shorter cooler days herald the onset of autumn; as we mourn the passing of another summer, here are some tips to keep your pet safe and disease free at this time of year. Autumn is a busy time for parasites! Fleas are still very much a problem, so do keep up to date with antiparasitic treatments. It’s also the peak time for ticks. Ticks live in long grass and woodland areas and attach themselves to passing pets. Grooming your dog after a walk is an ideal opportunity to remove them before they attach. At the same time, you can check for grass seeds which can get stuck in the coat, and penetrate the skin working their way in to cause pain and possible infection.

Harvest mites are another problem seen late summer and during the autumn months ahead. The mites live in long grass and swarm onto passing pets, where they typically congregate on the face, ears and feet. They present as bright orange dots and are usually a cause of great irritation. Other risks perhaps lie closer to home in your garden. Keep pets away from fallen fruits, acorns and conkers, all of which can cause digestive upsets. Also, do try and prevent your dog eating slugs and snails since these can spread the lungworm Angiostrongylus vasorum. Autumn aches: Bear in mind that the cooler weather ahead may unmask arthritic disease and joint stiffness so do keep an eye on your pet’s mobility and for any signs of discomfort. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on your pet’s weight too over the next few months since it’s all too easy to gain a little at this time of year! If you are at all concerned, then book your pet in with us for a check-up.

Are you tired all the time? How do you feel when you wake up? Are you refreshed and ready for the day? Or do you feel drained, like you've hardly slept.

Ps report that more patients are complaining of lack of energy. The syndrome even has its own name, TATT which means tired all the time. If you constantly feel lethargic it is important not to ignore it. TATT is common but there are steps you can take to help yourself. There are many different causes of fatigue, and a good place to start is a

(CFS). There is not a definitive cure for these conditions but there are treatments and selfhelp measures that can help to ease the symptoms. A GP will test for other medical problems that can cause tiredness, such as anaemia, thyroid issues, food intolerances or diabetes. Many cases of TATT are related to mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety. Traumatic life events, stress and money worries can also cause fatigue. Talking therapies can help in these cases, and your doctor may be able to refer you to a counselling service. If a GP has ruled out more serious underlying causes but you still feel tired, there are lifestyle changes that will help.

If you struggle to drop off try a soak in a warm bath before you go to bed because this will make you feel calm, and the drop in body temperature when you exit the bath fools the body to start to prepare for sleep. Reduce your stress levels by scheduling relaxation time into your day. This could be something as simple as listening to your favourite music or meeting friends for a chat. A good diet also plays a role in increasing your energy levels. Try eating small snacks throughout the day, rather than one large meal in the evening. Avoid alcohol and drink more water. Cutting caffeine will also help but cut down gradually to minimise the risk of headaches.

Finally, a little light exercise is another proven way to fight fatigue. Even a quick 15-minute walk around the block will give boost your energy and before long your energy levels will feel much more balanced. www.towncriermagazine.com

arenting can be hard at the best of times. But when you’re facing challenges like: isolation, family breakdown, illness or multiple birth, it can be overwhelming.

Joanne Kent explains how Home-Start Kennet helps families cope. Home-Start Kennet (HSK), has been helping Wiltshire families for over 30 years – giving emotional and practical support to young families in their own homes. Last year, the charity helped 107 families and 216 children. Vital to HSK’s service are their dedicated volunteers, who visit families for up to two hours each week. Volunteer support is tailored to need and as individual as the families they work with. Often it’s the simple things that make a huge difference: accompanying a parent to a toddler group whilst they build their confidence, playing with a child whose parent is ill, helping a family adjust to twins or just being there to listen. For families, Home–Start support can be invaluable. The unexpected can happen and parents can suddenly find themselves struggling. One parent said,

“I felt the service was my lifeline in a time of great need.” Home-Start has volunteers from all walks of life, ages and backgrounds: parents, grandparents, professionals, non- professionals, people who have worked with children, people who have received HSK support previously. All understand the pressures of parenting!

The best thing about volunteering is being told by your family that your visits have been much appreciated, the support has exceeded their expectations and that they will miss you so much when you leave! If someone asked me about volunteering for HomeStart, I’d say go for it! “

Use a virtual private network to protect your data. In a coffee shop the other day I took my phone out to catch up on some emails. The customer Wi-Fi was free so of course I connected and started browsing the web. I glanced up at one point and all around me a number of people were busy doing the same thing. It suddenly struck me that everyone was on the same network, so how safe was my information? Then I wondered whether my home was really any safer.

Any time we use the Internet our phone or computer has a digital conversation with other computers. If someone monitors this conversation, they will see what we're looking at, who we're talking to and, if the computer we're talking to isn't secure. Our account details and passwords are vulnerable. Organisations make a lot of money from gathering this sort of information. It's called Big Data. Think of those pop-up ads that seem to know exactly the sorts of things we like.

So how can we stop the snoopers? Using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a great solution. This works by using our Internet connection to securely connect us to a VPN server. Hackers can see we've made the connection but can't see anything we're doing. Our device tells the VPN server what we want to do, and it goes on to the Internet to do it for us.

Most VPN systems allow connection to servers in different countries. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s then possible to access websites and services as if you were based in that country. However big organisations like Netflix invest a lot of money trying to stop people using VPN connections to get US shows from the UK. In countries where the Internet is censored, using a VPN can bypass the censorship and allow access the information from forbidden sites.

It then sends that information back to our device using this secure connection. This technique has a number of advantages.

VPN services cost a few pounds per month to rent. Sometimes internet security software offers the service as part of their package.

All our browsing is carried out by the VPN server. No one can track our activity back to our computer. Governments, hackers and websites can only see the VPN server, and these don't keep any records of who was using the system. Everything we do online instantly becomes fully encrypted. We can connect to public Wi-Fi hotspots without worrying about somebody stealing our information.

Members of The Rotary Club of Chippenham came along and more than £1260 was raised to support them in their work in the community. This was raised through a tombola and through an additional fundraising challenge with a team of staff and volunteers will be taking it in turns to cycle the equivalent of the 874-mile journey from Land’s End to John O’Groats. General manager Philip Dunn, who has recently taken over management of the hotel, said: “We are so grateful to everyone who came along to have a look around and who helped us raise well over 1250 pounds for such a worthy local cause.” Originally a 17th century coaching inn, The Angel has had more than £260,000 spent on upgrading its infrastructure to bring it into the 21st century and to reflect its historic status. More work is planned during 2019. This first phase has seen much behind-thescenes equipment being upgraded and there has been an up-to-the-minute refit of its gym which includes new equipment and digital wallpaper. Master craftsmen have also restored the grand portico of the hotel, which is itself listed, using traditional techniques. had my summer holiday in June this year. I was staying on the west coast of Scotland 15 miles south of Oban in the county of Argyle and Bute. Just 5 minutes walk from the house is a sea loch with the yachts out on the water. It is a truly beautiful spot and I have sat for many hours on my own over the years and enjoyed it. It is particularly beautiful late in an evening if you get a sunset. I am always full of a natural sense of gratitude for the splendour of creation. A few years ago my father joined me in my annual trip to the West Coast. He was in his late 80s. It was lovely to be able to share those special moments with him. I remember with such fondness the two of us skimming stones on the water, something he had taught me so many years earlier. We created memories that day which will last for years to come. This year I was joined by two friends for part of my holiday. I was like a tour guide for the week taking them to all the places to see the sights that I had seen over the years and taken pleasure in. But this time there was an added dimension because I was sharing it. I enjoyed it because they enjoyed it. I was full of gratitude. Just recently I have had a number of invitations to join friends for meals. There is something so special about eating a meal with others. Growing up I was one of seven children so as you can imagine meal times were big events but we always sat at the table as a whole family to eat and share news together. It helped us all to learn to listen, to interact, to share and it deepened our relationships.When I sit and have meals with others I am always full of gratitude

for the friendship shown and for the food we share together. As you make your way through the Wiltshire countryside this time of year you cannot miss all the farming activity. All around combine harvesters work late into the night to get the harvest in, in a timely manner. I have farming friends who are flat out late August and September so I have a natural sense of gratitude for the harvest and for those who work tirelessly so we can have food on our tables. It is so easy to moan and find fault in everything today, but I am always drawn to people who suffer without moaning. People who even in the hardest times have an inner contentment. They are an example for all of us to follow. So I am very grateful to God for the beauty of the world in which we live, for our yearly harvest and for all the people I share life with. Even in times when are things are hard I thank God for all that he has given me; for he gives me an inner contentment that can also be yours because he produces a God-saturated hope within us. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. HARVEST TIME The history of the Harvest Festival T

ake a look at a modern harvest festival and you’ll no doubt see many ‘urban’ offerings of pre-packed cakes and tins of sweet corn. It’s so easy to pop down to the supermarket these days we forget that until relatively recently in this country, people’s lives depended upon the success or failure of their crops. Harvest festivals were a way to say thank you for a good harvest while trying to guarantee the fortune of the next one. Saxon farmers offered the first cut sheaf of corn to the gods of fertility in order to please them and ensure they were kind the following year. The last sheaf was used to make a Kern baby; a doll, dressed in white and trimmed with coloured ribbons to represent spring. Most peasants were tenant farmers who farmed for a landowner. Harvest time meant weeks of back-breaking work, so it became a tradition for the landowner to host a harvest supper as a thank you to the whole community once the harvest was brought home safely. There was no set date, but the celebrations generally took place around the time of the full Moon, known as the Harvest Moon.

The story of John Barleycorn You may never have heard of him, but John Barleycorn is a character in a medieval folksong. He represents barley, the most important cereal crop of the harvest, and also the alcoholic beverages beer and whisky which were made from it. In the song John Barleycorn suffers attacks, indignities and death which correspond to the various stages of the harvest such as reaping and malting. It begins…

The song has many verses and poor old John Barleycorn suffers dreadfully throughout, particularly when he’s ground between the milling stones! But the story has a neat twist as our hero, who’s finally turned to alcohol, wreaks his revenge on everyone who drank him so merrily, and they suffer for their sins the following morning with gargantuan hangovers! It is a mark of how important the harvest was that there are more versions of this song than any other in the English language!

The Reverend Robert Hawker invited members of his parish to a service of harvest thanksgiving at his Cornish church.
