Womad Festival 2018

26-29 July 2018, Charlton Park, Wiltshire WOMAD has always boasted a strong club element to its line-up over the years, from the legendary Whirl-Y-Gig all-nighters in the ’90s right through to the delights of the everpopular Big Red Tent at the current site in Wiltshire. 2018 is no different, with the likes of Leftfield, Macka B and Jazzanova featuring Paul Randolph already signed up to get the party started in Charlton Park from 26 – 29 July, and even more names from clubland royalty being added to the line-up today, from genredefying DJs to sharp-thinking rappers to dancefloor-filling bands. Taking to the WOMAD turntables at the Big Red Tent will be dance music pioneer Gilles Peterson, who makes a long overdue return to play the world’s biggest global party. His set will no doubt be a glorious fusion of soul, jazz, hip-hop, house and everything in between, brimming with passion and sound. Joining him for his WOMAD debut will be Clifford Joseph Price MBE – aka Goldie – who has blazed a trail through British dance music for more than 25 years, a leading light in the rise of jungle from the underground to the mainstream. Malmesbury Concert Band Drums Up Support For A Percussionist The Malmesbury Concert Band has been drumming up support for a new percussionist. The Band played at the Market Cross recently, but without this much needed band member. Director of Music Tony Fleming said: “We badly need a new percussionist for our summer programme this year and our 160th anniversary in 2019, selections from we played recently. "We would warmly welcome any applicants. Ideally, we would prefer someone who can read music, but we are flexible.” The Band’s summer programme is, as always, eclectic. New numbers include a recently discovered Sousa march, a Frank Sinatra selection, some blues and classical music as well as the well-known Pink Panther. Wessex Concert Orchestra

An American Adventure. A concert of popular classical music to immerse you in American culture and film music. Saturday 14th July 7.30pm Conductor -Tim Harrison Leader - Nicola Ashton To include :Dvorak - Symphony No 9 ‘From the New World” George Gershwin - ‘An American in Paris John Williams – ‘Cowboys Overture’ Leonard Bernstein – ‘Mambo’ from West Side Story

'The Merry Wives Of Windsor' is pure fun, packed with broad and sometimes outrageous humour, as the two wives in question turn the tables most elegantly on their lascivious suitor, Sir John Falstaff. Excellent acting, costumes, lighting and sound will all come together to create great entertainment, and the company focus always on clarity and making Shakespeare easy to understand. The show will be in the grounds of Cleeve House, Seend, SN12 6PG for seven performances from July 2nd - 7th, including a Saturday matinee and a final Gala Night with extra entertainment before the show and during the interval. Monday to Thursday performances start at 7.30pm, the matinee is at 2pm, and Friday and Saturday performances start at 8pm. The gardens are open for picnics 90 minutes before each show, and there is easy parking, a bar, and refreshments. Devizes Corn Exchange, Market Place, Devizes, SN10 1HS. Tickets £12 (£10 concessions, £5 under 16) From Devizes Books or www.wco.org.uk, or on the door. Tim Harrison (conductor) says ‘We hope this programme of familiar classics transports you to this great country. In the first half is Antonin Dvorak’s romantic symphony -the New World – depicting his impressions after he moved to America at the age of 51 and composed this final symphony. Very well-known it has beautiful flowing themes and also influenced by traditional American folk melodies. The second half features music from the twentieth century and composers’ take on American culture where Western Classical music interweaves with Jazz influences. It includes the Mambo dance from Bernstein’s West Side Story, which showcases both Latin American rhythms with Jazz harmonies This is followed by the highly energetic American in Paris Suite by Gershwin. And the concert concludes with the Cowboys Overture by John Williams. Both the narrative of the Cowboys film is present, as well as the depiction of the vast barren landscape seen in Western movies. Come and join us “Yeeha!” ‘

Sherston Jigsaw Puzzle Festival The Benevolent Confraternity of Dissectologists , never heard of it? It is the name given to a group of enthusiasts enjoying the hobby of doing jigsaws. A Jigsaw Festival is a great way to show the beautiful results obtained when a jigsaw is finished, it is relaxing and excellent for the brain in those dark winter months when we sit by a fire wanting something other than the tv to stimulate us. The Festival to be held over August Bank Holiday weekend, 25th, 26th, 27th August 2018 will showcase the results of the puzzles done in the winter months and will hopefully prove to be ( with your help) a great fundraiser for Sherston Village Hall Improvement project.

Chippenham’s Soap Box Derby team with their house-shaped kart to the team from Emery Gate with their brilliant rendition of the Flintstone’s car.

ON Sunday 3rd June Chippenham High Street became home to a mad dash of soap box racers as well as 7,000 visitors to the town centre for a successful second year of Chippenham’s Soap Box Derby. Brought to you by Chippenham Connected in partnership with Chippenham Town Council, the event consisted of teams racing homemade, non-motorised karts racing through Chippenham past a range of new exciting obstacles including ramps and chicanes.

Mayor of Chippenham, Councillor Andy Phillips said, “The most pleasing aspect was to see the town once again packed with hundreds of people of all ages out enjoying themselves. Congratulations to the BID for their superb organisation of such a spectacular event that provided thrills, spills, excitement and entertainment. It was a great community event and certainly a big boost to the town’s economy. Well done everyone involved.”

Kathryn Crosweller of Chippenham Connected said, “The effort the teams put into building their karts

The fun has only just begun this year with a packed diary of events from Chippenham Connected in partnership with Chippenham Town Council; with fabulous floats and vintage vibes, next up will be Chippenham Vintage Carnival on 14th July.

is extraordinary. They weren’t allowed to use any prefabricated karts, so everything was built from the ground up. Giving the people of Chippenham a platform to be creative and bringing the town together is wonderful, and this event is great fun for everyone.”

Chippenham Connected is on the lookout for community groups, businesses and more to take part in Chippenham Vintage Carnival through the new procession, perform on the stage or even have a stall. Visit www. chippenhamcarnival.co.uk to find out about how to take part.

yum. Strawberry Jelly Cake

Perfect for using up those freshly picked strawberries, this beautiful cake can be served for afternoon tea or as an indulgent pudding.

Sit the cake on a flat plate once cooled and place the ring from a 9inch springform pan around the cake. Dissolve the gelatin in 2tbsp cold water and set aside for a few minutes, then microwave to dissolve completely. Set aside to cool. Beat the cream cheese until it’s light and fluffy. Do the same with the whipping cream, gradually add the icing sugar and continue to mix until stiff peaks form.

Ingredients ¾ cup all purpose flour ¼ tsp baking powder ¼ tsp baking soda Pinch of salt 4tbsp melted butter ½ cup sugar 1 large egg 6 tbsp milk 1/8 cup plain Greek yoghurt 1tsp vanilla extract

For The Filling 1 cup whipping cream 1 cup icing sugar 8oz softened cream cheese 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract 2 tbsp cold water 1 ½ tsp gelatin

For The Jelly 1lb fresh strawberries, halved 1 packet of jelly mix

Line a 9 inch round cake pan with parchment paper. Preheat the oven to 180oc. Mix the flour, baking powder, soda and salt in a bowl. Melt the butter in a large bowl and set aside to cool. Once done, add the sugar and mix with an electric mixer, then add in the egg, milk, yogurt and vanilla. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the egg mixture and mix slowly until all combined. Add the batter to the pan and bake for 18-20 minutes. Cool in the pan and then transfer to a rack to cool completely. 16

The Town Crier Magazine | JULY 2018

Mix in the vanilla and dissolved gelatin, add the cream cheese and mix to combine. Spread gently onto the cooled cake and pop in the fridge to chill for 30 minutes. Make up the jelly according to the packet and set aside to cool. Chop the strawberries and use these to line the edge of the cheesecake. Layer the next row of strawberries by gently overlapping them and cover the whole of the cheesecake in this fashion. Pour the jelly over the strawberries once it is starting to set and refrigerate until completely set. Run a thin knife around the edge to remove the pan and serve.

Raspberry Jam Homemade preserves conjure up warm days picking fruit with our friends and family by our sides. With the sun beating down and punnets at the ready why not recreate a summers day by making some jam now and cracking it open in the autumn? Ingredients

1kg fresh raspberries 1kg jam sugar

Juice of 1 lemon

Make sure you have saved up enough jars to fill with your jam and sterilize these before you start.

Tip the juice and the pulp back into the preserving pan and stir in the sugar. Bring it to the boil and allow to bubble for 5 minutes. Remove the mixture from the heat and pop a little of the jam onto the plate from the freezer. Push your finger into it – it should wrinkle and look like jam. If it doesn’t then you need to boil it for a further couple of minutes and test again (don’t forget to put the plate back in the freezer). As the mixture is cooling, give it a little stir. Pour into the jars and seal. The jam will keep unopened for one year and make sure you store in the fridge once opened.

Put a small plate in the freezer to chill. Place half of the raspberries into a preserving pan and add the lemon juice. Mash the berries down using a potato masher and then leave to cook gently for about 5 minutes. Using a sieve, drain the juice off the berries and firmly work the pulp through the sieve with a wooden spoon until you are left with just the seeds.

E OFF K A B for lift OFF shire Air Wiltb Am ulance

If you like cakes, why not hold a bake sale and raise funds to help Wiltshire Air Ambulance to keep flying and saving lives? Bake Off for Lift Off is once again the charity’s theme for National Air Ambulance Week (10-16 September 2018). Individuals, groups, schools, colleges and businesses can all get involved in the cake-related fun by holding their own bake sales, bake off competitions, tea parties or Teddy Bears’ Picnics. Kenresa Stratford Fundraising & Events Coordinator at Wiltshire Air Ambulance, said: “We’re hoping that this year’s Air Ambulance Week will be bigger and better than ever as we Bake Off for Lift Off once again! We would like to encourage as many schools, colleges, businesses, groups and individuals as possible to take part and get their bake on.

“The fundraising options are limitless; from holding bake sales, to bake offs and even getting involved in a custard pie fight. There are a lot of fun ways to get involved and the funds raised will help us to continue saving lives. “We’ve saved countless lives in the 28 years that we have been flying, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. We have to raise £3.25 million a year to keep our lifesaving service operational and every penny raised during Bake Off for Lift Off will help to keep our helicopter and crew flying and saving lives. If you’d like to get your bake on, please get in touch and we can send you everything you need to get started.” Bake Off for Lift Off is sponsored by Haydens Bakery, based in Devizes. Kenresa Stratford added: “We are delighted to receive the support of Haydens Bakery and would like to thank them for supporting Bake Off for Lift Off by donating cakes for bake sales during Air Ambulance Week.” Zoe Daly, Marketing Manager at Haydens Bakery, said: “As a key employer to the area we’re proud to support such a vital community resource. Masai Mara From the

to Malmesbury Town Hall

Local Tetbury and Malmesbury photographers Sandie Cox and Tony Banks share a passion for wildlife and nature and are going to be staging a joint photographic exhibition this summer in the Town Hall at Malmesbury. It will run from July 14 to August the 10th and show a collection of captivating images captured in travels that have taken them from Yellowstone Park in the US to the Masai Mara in Kenya As well as stunning images of wolves, lions, cheetahs and bears the photographs on display will reflect some of their favourite wildlife found in the UK, such as kingfishers, kestrels, little owls, red squirrels, and mountain hares. There will also be inspiration for anyone wanting to perfect their own skill with more easily captured horticultural and natural history shots. Some of these nature images capture water lillies from Latour Marliac in south west France, where plants were bought by Monet and used in his garden at Giverny, where they inspired him to create the famous water lily paintings that are now among the most valuable ever produced. The Exhibition will be of great interest to animal and nature lovers of all ages. For further information please contact Tony Banks: 01666 860 656 and 07739 710 190

Patchouli

ESSENTIAL OIL

This is one of those ‘marmite’ oils - you either love the smell or hate it. Nonetheless it’s easily recognisable with its rich, muskysweet fragrance. If you do like the aroma, Patchouli is a lovely one to diffuse to give you a sense of grounding and balanced emotions. Indeed it is often used for cases of depression as it stimulates the release of pleasure hormones. Patchouli is often used in beauty products as it stimulates the generation of new bodily cells so it can assist with a smooth and glowing complexion.

What running can do for people with DIABETES by Verity Wright, www.runverity.com

A

S we approach Diabetes Awareness week I wanted to share with you the health benefits of running and what you should know before you start a new running programme. What is becoming increasingly clear is that the sheer extent of the benefits of exercise are huge as research shows us time and time again how exercise can reduce so many life-threatening illnesses. Exercise can be seen as a wonder drug in that it protects us, it has none of the side effects of actual medication and there’s probably not a single organ in the body that isn’t unaffected by it. Recent research has suggested that by sitting more than eight hours per day has been linked to a 90 percent risk of type 2 diabetes. If you already have diabetes chronic sitting increases the likelihood of worsening symptoms, or the onset of heart disease. Armed with all of this information and public service announcements how do you start exercising? One reason someone might start a new regime is a cue to action and this could be a major life event like having a diagnosis of diabetes or borderline diabetic that makes someone realise that they are susceptible, for example to heart disease and so by taking a recommended action, they will avoid the negative health condition. Running is also a great form of exercise if you feel that you are not a sporty person especially if you have awful memories of compulsory PE lessons at school. The advantage of running is that you are in control of it as an individual, you can tailor any run to suit you. Running covers a lot of bases with how much positive impact it has on the body and the mind, your physical and joint strength improves, your stability improves, your lungs strengthen, you increase your bone density, it prevents high blood pressure, you boost your immunity, lose weight, increase confidence, improve your overall mental well-being and of course reduce the effects of diabetes.

R

unning can improve your health and help with losing weight in a manageable way, there is no quick fix with running and as you improve it is immensely satisfying to watch the weight drop away, your body shape changes on top of being rewarded with you achieving goals that you may not have previously thought possible and running is an ideal form of exercise for people with diabetes as it helps improve the body’s sensitivity to insulin. My top tips on how to start running: Before starting any new regime, you need to consult with your GP

• If you have not exercised for a long time, start off by walking as walking mimics the same movement patterns that running does • Make some adjustments to your schedule for your new regime, this could be adjustments to meal planning, eating before and after you run • Turn your 20-minute walk into run/walk for 20mins • Identify landmarks that you are going to run in between, for example a bench to the 2nd lamppost • Each time you go out try and improve on how many lamp-posts you can run in between • Slow your pace down, you don’t have to run quickly to reap the benefits of running, if you can’t talk you are running too quickly, even if you think you could walk quicker, just by having one foot off the ground you are running • Visualise the impact that the new regime is going to have on your life • Set yourself a goal And enjoy feeling good.

This helped the Americans too because their native vines produced inferior wine. All of today’s Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon wines are produced from ‘rescued’ vines! There are now a huge variety of grapes for manufacturers to choose from and this, coupled with modern winemaking techniques have made wines more standardised and reliable. But recently there has been a move back to artisan wine-making by passionate manufacturers who want more individuality, uniqueness or ‘terroir’. The music is usually Latin-inspired, so it’s fast and makes you want to move. There’s a little bit of salsa, a dash of hip-hop, a dollop of mambo, and a few more styles thrown into the mix. Zumba also includes a few aerobic moves, such as squats and lunges. Your instructor will demonstrate key moves, then the class will follow them together. Don’t worry about going wrong, no one gets all the moves right straight away, and no one cares. Half of the fun of Zumba is being able to laugh at yourself as you spin the wrong way. You’ll probably be out of breathe, red-faced and sweaty when you finish the class, but you’ll also be counting down the days to the next class.

“Reflexology during pregnancy aims to optimise the physical and emotional health of the mum to be, during the sessions clients can focus purely on themselves and the growing baby. I really enjoy working with pregnant clients and seeing how reflexology helps them throughout the nine months ” said Gabriela During the first trimester the aim of Reflexology is to relax, de-stress and offer support. In the second and third trimesters Reflexology can be used for general wellbeing or to address other health issues such as sleeping problems, should they arise. Although there is no evidence that Reflexology can induce labour, the general view is that it can help support the body to prepare for labour and promote relaxation at a time when anxiety levels are often high. Ever heard of

Apple Cider Vinegar? by Helen Adams, of Wiltshire’s Oakmead Clinic

Helen’s top tip:

F

OUND in many health food outlets, and sometimes labelled as ‘with the Mother’, apple cider vinegar has been shown to break down LDL cholesterol (the kind your doctor worries about) and reduce the accumulation of fats in the body. “This is a good thing, not only for anyone experiencing heart or circulation problems, but also for anyone with diabetes or weight issues. The acetic acid in the vinegar grabs hold of toxins and helps eliminate them, leaving you feeling clearer-headed and more energetic. In part, this is due to its potassium, which has the ability to break down mucus and clean the lymph system (your body’s system for receiving all the rubbish and broken bits and moving it all to an appropriate exit). “Toxins could be anything from waste products your body no longer wants or needs, to an ‘excess’ from the day before. Apple cider vinegar stimulates good blood circulation to your liver and kidneys. And it’s also antibacterial, inhibiting organisms such as e-coli. A daily glass can prevent bad bugs from really taking hold. If you already have bugs (such as those that cause a sore throat), it can limit their growth and spread, helping you to feel better, sooner. “The best form to take is the cloudy stuff – known as ‘with the mother’. You might think that when it’s crystal clear and sparkling that’s the best form, but actually, no. When you buy unfiltered apple cider vinegar it includes sediment at the bottom of the bottle. When you shake it up, you see the sediment is made up of clouds and wisps in the liquid, which don’t really dissolve. These are friendly bacteria, strands of proteins and enzymes and these make it more powerful. “However you must be careful how you consume apple cider vinegar. The best way to take it is to dilute two tablespoons of it in a glass of warm water. This is because 36

The Town Crier Magazine | JULY 2018

“I recommend apple cider vinegar to be used first thing in the morning to wake up the digestive system, 15-20 minutes before breakfast . It does this by increasing the amount of acid avail able in your stomach to break down your food. “All the body’s processes are like a fine orchestra: they each need to play their part, and anyt hing ‘out of tune’ will affect the whole performance. “Many of us don’t produce as much stomach acid as we need (medication can play a part here, too), and if you can unlock more goodness in the stomach, you can absorb more of the nutrients from your food.”

any acid is corrosive and drinking it neat washes a lot of concentrated acid over your teeth, mouth and oesophagus (the pipe between your mouth and your stomach). “While the stomach has protective mechanisms to mitigate any damage from acid, the rest of the body doesn’t. Once diluted in water, this raises the pH of the solution (increases alkalinity, reduces acidity) so that it’s no longer a problem. It removes the risk of acidrelated tooth decay and acid-burns to sensitive tissues. You can then reap the health benefits without fear of any down-sides.” Helpful advice from nutritional therapist Helen Adams of Oakmead Clinic, Chippenham. Helen can help you with any issues around allergy, food intolerance, weight loss, diabetes and a range of other health conditions. She can also offer a free 30 minute discovery telephone call.

0344 897 8000 Anxiety / insomnia Smaller plates may be a key to weight loss. Several years ago, a food psychologist called Brian Wasink gathered a group of 85 food and nutrition experts. He gave each of them a small bowl or a large bowl and a small scoop or a large scoop. Then he asked them all to serve themselves a ‘portion’ of ice cream. Now these were people who knew about nutrition, yet they scooped 31% more than the average serving size into the large bowl and 15% more from the large scoop. Studies at the University of Pennsylvania conducted similar experiments hypothesising that giving student subjects a smaller scoop would mean they would take more than one, but most of the students took only one scoop regardless of size. So, what can those of us who want to shed a few pounds take from this? Swap your 10 inch / 25cm dinner plate for an 8 inch / 20 cm one and put fattening foods like gravy or salad dressings into small bowls with small spoons. It was an Easter family get together when my Dad complained of a bad back and some other symptoms. I remember sitting around my kitchen table with him and my sisters making light of it and laughing about the ‘creaky old grandad‘ – ‘Why don’t we check your symptoms on NHS Choices Dad’, I said – so we did, it would be a laugh – let’s play Doctor and diagnose Dad. He was game and played along merrily so we put his symptoms in and one of the suggested diagnoses was ‘Prostate Cancer’ yohoho, we said - you’ve got Cancer Dad! We all came to the conclusion that he probably didn’t have cancer as he looked fine, it was a water infection or a pulled muscle, he needed to take his mind off of his bad back with an Easter egg hunt. You can imagine our shock and dismay when later on that year he was diagnosed with cancer of the prostate.

will carry out a rectal examination to feel if your prostate is enlarged and a PSA test (Prostate Specific Antigen test), which will measure the level of your PSA and may help detect early prostate cancer. PSA tests are not conclusive indicators for prostate cancer, as a raised level can also point to a urinary tract infection or an inflammation of the prostate as well as a large non-cancerous growth of the prostate known as BPH (Benign Prostate Enlargement). PSA tests aren’t reliable and so are not offered as a routine screening tool.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers diagnosed in men in the UK, with over 47,000 new cases every year. The chances of developing prostate cancer increase as you get older, with most cases developing in men aged 50 or older. Of course other high risk factors are being overweight or having a family history of prostate cancer. Patients of black ethnic origin are most at risk (a lifetime risk of 1 in 4 compared to 1 in 8 for white men). Prostate cancer usually develops slowly, so there may be no signs you have it for many years.

If you are diagnosed with prostate cancer, your specialist will discuss treatment options with you. Men with slow-growing cancers may be offered active surveillance such as repeat PSA testing to monitor the cancer with intervention later if it starts to progress. Treatments include surgery, radiotherapy and hormone therapy. Before you commence any treatment it’s important to understand what’s involved and about possible side effects, which could include problems with erections, loss of fertility and incontinence.

The prostate gland lies just below the bladder and is about the size of a satsuma. It surrounds the urethra and helps to produce healthy sperm. Problems with the prostate gland can affect how you urinate and your sexual function. Other symptoms may be pain or stiffness in the lower body, extreme tiredness and loss of appetite. Contrary to popular belief there is no single test to diagnose prostate cancer. If you are worried, the best thing to do is to make a routine appointment with your GP. Your doctor will talk to you about your symptoms and if necessary carry out further tests. All tests have benefits and risks associated with them and your doctor will discuss these with you. Tests most commonly include a physical examination of your prostate, where the doctor

The PSA test can miss cancer and provide false reassurance, it can also lead to unnecessary worry and follow-on tests, when there is no cancer. Your GP may also refer you for a biopsy of your prostate, which involves taking small samples to test them for cancer.

Thankfully, prostate cancer usually progresses slowly and treatment options are varied and advanced. Like all cancers - early detection is key! Us women, usually have no problem discussing our health. This is probably because of routine screening such as cervical smear tests, which also provide the opportunity to have a chat about anything else that might be bothering us. Men are less likely to speak to their doctor about these things and publicity, such as the recent news coverage of Stephen Fry’s diagnosis, really helps encourage our male patients to make an appointment to chat about their concerns. My Dad was diagnosed ten years ago and to a certain extent has led a relatively normal life with prostate cancer. To be fair he wasn’t all that normal before his diagnosis! Don’t tell him – but that’s why we love him so…! Oh dear…. The Town Crier Magazine | JULY 2018

I’m quite a relaxed parent (compared with many of my friends) so when my teenage daughter Tash decided she wanted her tongue pierced I was more curious than horrified. It was all set to go ahead until we went for a routine family visit to the dentist. I casually mentioned the imminent tongue-piercing and the dentist’s reaction made us both reconsider on the spot! In turns out that dentists are not fans of oral piercing due to the many issues they cause. “Gums are very thin and easily traumatised. Even brushing too hard can cause gum recession and loose teeth,” she said. The oral and dental complications associated with tongue piercings can be categorised as acute or chronic. Acute complications occur a short time after piercing and include: infection, pain, swelling of the tongue, changes to speech, swallowing and chewing, and allergy to the metal used. There have even been reports of galvanic current between barbell and metallic dental restorations.

Chronic (longer term) complications include chipping, tooth fracture, gum trauma and recession. One U.S. study found that 41% of people with pierced lips had receding gums, compared with only 7% who had no oral piercing. Finally there is a risk of overgrowth of surrounding tissue leading to the ornament becoming embedded Tash decided on the spot that she wasn’t going to go ahead, and I decided that perhaps I needed to be a little less liberal in the future…which is why I said a firm no to her request for a tattoo less than a week later!

Are you struggling with depression, anxiety or stress? Have you considered using EFT – often known as tapping - with a qualified practitioner? Glen Wood is a life transformation specialist, who works from Chippenham, specialising in EFT, reiki, yoga and massage with more than 40 years’ experience. What is EFT? Emotional Freedom Techniques are a form of psychological acupuncture – without the invasiveness of needles – using the same meridian points on the body as used in traditional acupuncture. With guidance and support, you tap on those points transferring kinetic energy from your fingertips into those points while thinking about the specific problem being discussed or focussed on. Supported by your practitioner, you use positive verbal communication at the same time to take the ‘sting’ or ‘negative energy’ from the problem which can be physical, mental or traumatic. Which physical ailments have been partially or completely addressed using EFT? Glen said: “The connection between mind and body cannot be overstated. Your body can have physical reactions, symptoms or illnesses based upon traumatic experiences or negative episodes which lie in your recent past or much further back. The body can hold on to this and it can impact your present day health and state of mind many years later.” Here is a list of some of the physical ailments which have been addressed by Glen and his clients: *Headaches *Back pain. *Stiff neck & shoulders. *Cancer *Chronic fatigue syndrome

*Ulcerative colitis *Skin problems. *Irritable bowel syndrome *Insomnia *Sexual dysfunction.

Glen runs his business through one to one treatment programmes and workshops and can work face to face or remotely depending on the needs of the client and where they live. For his one-to-one support, he will offer a free initial consultation and assessment and then come up with treatment plan options to suit a person’s needs, timescale and budget.

Quintcssenliall English historic buildings, links with Capability Brown and glorious countryside on the doorstep. Slightly exotic flamboyant, and loud, peacocks regally wander the streets. And a starring role as an historic Cornish town - Ross Poldark brooded his way around here. The Wiltshire market town of Corsham is something of a hidden treasure. Just 20 minutes from Bath and 15 minutes from J17 of the M4, Corsham sit; on the edge of the Cotswolds. Its history is linked to wool and stone: the wool from the Flemish weavers who based themselves in the town; the stone from the famous Bath Stone, quarried beneath the parish and used in many of the town's buildings. In fact, architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner wrote "Corsham has no match in Wiltshire for wealth of good houses". Chief among the good houses is Corsham Court (www.corsham-court.co.uk) - a Saxon royal manor house and home to the Methuen family, as well as a collection of celebrated Old Masters, including works by Van Dyck, Lippi and Reynolds. These are displayed in a 72-foot long picture gallery designed by Capability Brown, proving that his skills extended past designing Corsham Court's extensive gardens. A short, tree-lined walk from Corsham Court takes you towards more contemporary art at The Pound, Corsham's gallery, theatre, cinema and cafe bar - and the organisation behind the town's ever-growing, always-exciting Blue Sky Festival in June and Magic and Mayhem Festival in November (poundarts.org.uk). Walking to The Pound will also take you past another of Corsham's historic buildings, the 350-year-old Almshouses (corshamalmshouses.org.uk)

If, on the other hand, retail therapy is your way of relaxing then Corsham's range of great independent shops mean you'll find everything from collectible comics and toys, to vintage wares, arts and crafts and gloriously different gifts. You'll also find great places to stop for a drink and something to eat, including the award-winning Methuen Arms (methuenarms.com) and the town has a growing reputation among foodies who love to cook with the best ingredients. Toby Haynes won the Countryside Alliance's award for Best Butcher in the South West (corshambutcher.co.uk), and May's Greengrocers (@Maysgreengrocers on Facebook) was a runner-up in the national Fresh Produce Awards. And if all that weren't enough, you'll be walking in the footsteps of Ross Poldark - the hit BBC One drama was filmed in the High Street, with Corsham starring as 18th century Truro. It's yet another surprise in a town full of them.

Hope e r t n e c

Have you ever heard of the Hope Nature Centre? No? It’s been going for 12 years and now offers entertainment and an animalcentre place for families across the county and beyond to visit – all for a reasonable cost. However the story behind this organisation speaks of a bigger vision which those visitors can support. The Centre – which is based in Southwick Country Park, Frome Road, South Wick, near Trowbridge was set up by two mums who had children with learning difficulties as far back as the year 2000. They realised that when their children – although supported at school – left education they could be rudderless.

There would be very little opportunity for a young adult with learning challenges to upskill or be of value. Yet often these young adults can be valuable and reliable employees. These mums – one called Hazel Jackson – decided to create an opportunity for their own children to sell cream teas.

They were both sure, given the right support, their children could add value and be of value to the Wiltshire community. In fact they were certain their vision could ultimately help other young adults too. In 2000 a Charitable Limited Company was formed and the organisation went on to become a registered charity in the same year. It then took six years of dedicated fundraising to start get the project off the starting blocks but on May 27 2006 the tearoom was opened.

50

The Town Crier Magazine | JULY 2018

A year later the charity had chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits and goats along with a miniature Shetland pony living outside and 12 months after that the animal park was officially opened. Today there is a 15-acre animal park open to visitors with goat walks and other

attractions available – and every day is an opportunity for a group of adults with learning difficulties to show their true value in the running of the nature centre and in interacting with the families who come along to be entertained.

She said: “I work here because I love it – it’s such a worthy cause. The day when one of our service volunteers, often with difficulties in communication, says “Good Morning Anya” is a very good day. Those days mean everything as you know you’ve become part of the fabric of their lives – and that’s humbling. “To enable our volunteers to learn from new experiences and to see them progressing and learning new life skills and to see the working with the animals. That’s what it’s all about.” The nature centre is open seven days a week (weather permitting) from 10am to 3.30pm and the entry price is £9.50 for families (two adults, two children), £3.50 for adults and £2.50 for children. Summer highlights in 2018 include Walks With Goats on Saturday July 1, 21st and again on September 1. These walks MUST be pre-booked as there are limited spaces and cost £5 per person on top of the entry fee. These take place at 9.15am and under18s must have an adult with them. Also there will be summer visits from the team of the Spering Court Animal Centre with their birds of prey and reptiles on the weekends of July 14 & 15; 28 and 29 and also August 18 and 19. Other attractions all year round (weather permitting) include a children’s play area, fairy wood and a land train. The tearoom provides freshly cooked lunches, homemade cakes and refreshments and has approximately 700 visitors per week.

celebr If you can get in a ring with 2,000 people watching and be smacked around by another guy, then walking onstage isn't hard.

Successful English film and television actor Ray Winstone is renowned for his troubled hard man roles. Most recently he is working on a film about the Hatton Garden robbery with Michael Caine and Jim Broadbent, due for release this year. Despite being made bankrupt twice over unpaid taxes, celebritynetworth.com claims he is now worth $5m. Aged 12, Ray joined the Repton Amateur Boxing Club. Over the next 10 years he won 80 out of 88 bouts. He was London schoolboy champion on three occasions, fighting twice for England. Boxing provided a firm grounding when tackling his acting career. "If you can get in a ring with 2,000 people watching and be smacked around by another 52

guy, then walking onstage isn't hard," he told boxrec.com. Deciding to pursue drama, Winstone enrolled at the £900 a term Corona Stage Academy in Hammersmith. Little did he anticipate that this would be the start of a career that would see him becoming the darling of ITV. He landed his first major role in What a Crazy World at the Theatre Royal, Stratford. His allegedly poor singing and dancing in this production apparently led his usually supportive father to say, "Give it up, while you're ahead." One of his first TV appearances came in the 1976 Loving Arms episode of ITV’s The Sweeney starring alongside John Thaw. He played a minor part as an unnamed young thug and was credited as Raymond Winstone.

rity interview RAY WINSTONE by Tim Saunders

His role in Scum, the 1979 crime drama about life inside a borstal pigeon holed Ray into countless further roles as a tough or violent man. However, he does have a softer side as seen in Martha, Meet Frank, Daniel and Laurence where he played a comic part. In Fanny and Elvis, he played the romantic lead. But it was his portrayal of King Henry VIII in the 2003 hit ITV series that won him a whole new audience. It took him weeks of tough physical training to get in shape. "People always think of Henry as this fat bloke, but in his younger days he was very fit," Ray told the Radio Times. "So, I was on a special diet to get my weight down. No drink, down the gym, that kind of thing."

It was a really challenging role though because having lost all that weight he then had to pile on the pounds for the king's later years. He admitted that the most difficult part of the role was mastering the King’s voice. "When my Henry comes into the room and says, ‘I am the King of England,’ I want to make sure people hear the sound of a warrior ready for war... not some poncey bloke with a bunch of jewels on his head," added Ray. In 2005, he appeared opposite Suranne Jones, in Vincent, the ITV drama about a team of private detectives. He provided the voice for Mr. Beaver in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Ray then appeared in Martin Scorsese's 2006 film The Departed as Mr. French, an enforcer to Jack Nicholson's Irish mob boss. Five years later Ray starred inThe Hot Potato, a comedy thriller about two men who come into possession of a lump of uranium. The film, which is set in the East End of London in the 1960s, also stars Jack Huston, Colm Meaney and David Harewood as well as Ray’s eldest daughter Lois Winstone. In 2015, Ray played the role of ex-criminal Jimmy Rose in The Trials of Jimmy Rose, a three-part drama for ITV. Married since 1979, he has three children.

They had me in one of them fat suits. That was a first for me.

Tim Saunders is an author, journalist and businessman. He meets celebrities, goes on holiday and road tests cars.

pets Keeping a pet is extremely rewarding but the unseen benefits can be far greater, especially in later life. Churchill Retirement Living regularly sees the positive impact pet ownership has on the health and wellbeing of its Owners, which is why, unlike some other retirement developments, at William Lodge in Malmesbury, Owners are welcome to bring well-behaved cats, dogs and caged birds when they move.

Churchill’s Regional Marketing Manager, Caroline Haswell, provides five benefits of keeping a pet in retirement: 1. Reduces Stress Stress is something we all try to avoid but sometimes there’s no escaping it. Retirement is a time to kick back and enjoy life and a pet can help you to achieve this. It has been said that pet owners have significantly lower stress levels than those who don’t own a cat, dog or other furry friend. The affection that pets provide helps us to get through hard times and provide much needed love when we’re feeling down. 2. Increases Physical Activity Keeping active in your later years can seem like a chore sometimes. We know it’s good for us but a day at the gym may not be as appealing as it once was. Pets encourage playfulness, laughter, and exercise, which gives a boost to your immune system and your energy. Taking your dog for a stroll once a day provides some much needed exercise while allowing you some enjoyment and companionship. 56

The Town Crier Magazine | JULY 2018

3. Increases Social Interaction Sustaining a social network isn’t always easy as you grow older and pets can be a great social ice breaker. Whether you’re taking your dog for a stroll or chatting to people about your cat, these animals are a shared interest which allows for endless conversation. 4. Improves Mental Health Playing with, chatting to or just holding a pet is believed to increase our brain activity and improve our mood. If you live alone, it’s easy to feel down, especially if you used to have a busy household and a large family. Your animal companion can give you that lift you need and we all know there’s nothing better after a difficult day than coming home to a purring cat or a wagging tail. 5. Improves Physical Health You can overcome many of the physical challenges associated with aging by taking good care of yourself. Looking after an animal can help you to appreciate the importance of this. Making sure you take your pet out and about can help you to lower blood pressure, reduce the effect of arthritis and keep you feeling great. Val Down moved to a Churchill Retirement Living apartment with her dog, Georgie. She said: “Bringing my little dog Georgie has been no problem. She has adapted wonderfully to apartment life, and loves looking at passers-by from the balcony window. Most importantly, the Owners at the Lodge love seeing her. The animal contact is so important to many, and Georgie laps up the attention.”

For further information, please contact William Lodge by calling 01666 718270 or by visiting the show complex, open Tuesday to Saturday, from 10.00am to 5.00pm. Alternatively, please visit: www.churchillretirement.co.uk

BOOK REVIEW

BALZAC AND THE LITTLE CHINESE SEAMSTRESS – DAI SIJI This is a remarkable little book, considered by many to be a modern classic – so much so that it has already found itself on some GCSE English Literature syllabuses. Don’t let it put you off though. I really urge you to give it a try – after the first few pages you will be hooked. Set in 1971, Sijie’s novel follows the story of two middle class city boys, forcibly removed to the Chinese countryside for re-education as part of the Cultural Revolution. Guilty only of having doctors and dentists for parents, they are subjected to punishingly hard physical work and appalling living conditions. Two things make their lives bearable – the presence nearby of the beautiful Little Seamstress, and a collection of books, first borrowed and then audaciously stolen from a friend, which open up a world beyond the mountains. Sijie’s story crackles with wit and humour throughout – the opening scene, in which the narrator finds himself playing a tune hastily retitled ‘Mozart is Thinking of Chairman Mao’ sets the tone instantly. But this is also a story about the power of words and the power of desire, and as such is beautifully told. Each character is vividly drawn, from the Little Seamstress herself to the grotesque village headman. Comic episodes are interwoven skilfully with passages exploring the transformative power of literature, and before you know it you have reached the inevitable yet poignant conclusion, which will stay with you for a long time afterwards. 64

FLAT STANLEY – JEFF BROWN Stanley Lambchop is a rather unusual boy. After an accident with a bulletin board, he is four feet tall, about a foot wide – and half an inch thick. Of course, being flat has its advantages – Stanley’s trip to California in an envelope is great, and his brother Arthur would love to be able to slide under their bedroom door like Stanley does. And, if Stanley was round, he would never have been able to assist his neighbour in catching thieves intent on stealing the world’s most famous painting. But there are downsides too – while it is great to be a kite for half an hour, it’s not so much fun when Arthur gets bored and leaves Stanley stuck in a tree. People can be cruel too, and eventually the name calling gets too much. Luckily, Arthur is on hand with a solution to his brother’s problem... This picture book manages to make an impossible situation seem perfectly plausible, thanks to the matter of fact style and simple, convincing illustrations. Ideal to read aloud to younger children or as a first book for newly confident readers, it has stood the test of time since its first publication in 1968. If it isn’t already a family favourite, then it is destined to become one very, very quickly.

DAYS OUT

Alternative Attractions Do you fancy visiting somewhere that's a bit more unusual, perhaps a little off the beaten track? Well, here are three of our suggestions to try this summer. Geocaching Within just six miles of Lacock, did you know over 700 hidden “treasure” containers are awaiting your discovery, armed only with a mobile phone, in the worldwidehunt phenomena called ‘Geocaching’.

Geocaches – hidden containers – can vary in shape and size from a larger plastic lunchbox, down to something as small as your little finger tip. Larger ones often contain SWAG – Something We All Get items – and you can take and keep something, if you replace it with something else. Inside each container, you can even sign your name in a logbook, so take a pen with you. Geocaching is so much more than finding the thing that’s hidden. It’s a great way to learn more about an area and its history. In Wiltshire you can expect to find unusual bridges, lovely churches, and a blindhouse (also often known as a the village lock-up). ! It’s up to you how far your adventure goes. You can search for individual geocaches or perhaps follow a circular route somebody has already set up. Routes could be across fields, through woodlands, alongside streams and rivers. To get started, visit www.geocaching.com and download a free app.

Woodhenge While everyone has heard of Stonehenge – and many millions visit it each year – and nearby Avebury Ring is a tourist hotspot, how many have travelled to their equally-illustrious neighbour Woodhenge?

Photo: English Heritage

This wooden cousin is an atmospheric, Neolithic, Class I henge site, probably built about 2300 BC, and originally believed to be the remains of a large burial mound, surrounded by a defensive bank and ditch almost destroyed by ploughing.

11th Hour Escape Rooms! Located in Bromham just ten minutes from Calne, it’s fantastic to have a Live Escape Game Experience in the local area. Basically, the idea of the game is you and your team of two to six adult players have just one hour to escape from the locked room. You must solve various puzzles to open locks, which lead you to further clues, and eventually to the key to the Escape Room door. There are two themed rooms to choose from – The Exit Visa Crisis and Victoria’s Last Challenge. The hour flies by and there is a tremendous sense of satisfaction when you open a combination lock with a number that you have derived from what, at first, appeared to be quite random information. Games are suitable for novices and experienced players alike, and the rooms are receiving 5-star reviews on TripAdvisor. It’s a great way to celebrate a special occasion, team-building, or just to treat yourself! The Escape Rooms are open every day except Thursdays. For more information visit: www.11thHourEscapeRooms.co.uk and prices start from just £13 per person.

In 1925, aerial photography detected rings of dark spots in a crop of wheat and excavations revealed them to be the long-vacated holes for six concentric rings of timber posts, thought to have once supported a ring-shaped building. More recent excavations also suggested at least five standing stones, now gone. Today concrete markers fill the old post holes. As with Stonehenge, human remains have been found here, along with pottery and other artefacts. Between Larkhill and Amesbury, and protected by English Heritage, Woodhenge is completely open to the public. There’s a small, free parking area by the site – but be careful crossing the road to the entrance gate. For details visit www.english-heritage.org.uk/ visit/places/woodhenge

Here are some, common sense precautions you can take in future:  Have clear credit control procedures and follow them consistently;  Check credit references before offering credit;  Do not extend credit limits without good reason;  Monitor customer accounts regularly. If a payment period lengthens, make sure you act quickly, discuss the matter with the customer and: suggest they take smaller more frequent deliveries; maybe restrict payment periods to, say, 20 days and extend to 30 days when you are confident they will pay; ask for confirmation that both the goods and invoice have been received to avoid the ‘sorry I lost the invoice’ scenario.

GARDEN VIEW - THIS MONTH...

By Rachael Leverton Have you ever wished you could grow fresh fruit in your garden but worry the space is too small, or it won’t look pretty, or it’s too difficult?

What if I was to tell you that even a beginner can successfully grow a wide variety of fruit from apples and pears to plums, cherries, blueberries and raspberries, and possibly even figs or nectarines? The first thing you need to know is that the sweeter the fruit is meant to be the more sun it will require. Sun boosts sugar levels. If you have a sunny wall it’s an ideal place to train a sun-loving fruit tree like a peach or an apricot. Plant the tree at the base of the wall but not too close (about 30cm is about right) in soil enriched with fertiliser and good quality compost. As it grows splay the branches evenly and attach them to the wall. As the plant grows gradually cut out old straggly branches and tie in new healthy branches. The idea of splaying or ‘fanning’ is that as much sun as possible gets to the fruit, so it can ripen beautifully and maximise your crop. It also has the benefit of being a great space saver. Choose a variety that won’t grow too large. In slightly shadier spots you can grow gooseberries or raspberries, or my favourite morello cherries. Most of these come in 76

The Town Crier Magazine | JULY 2018

compact varieties and can also be fantrained against a wall if space is an issue. I have a tiny orchard of minarettes - spacesaving apple, pear and plum trees bought as single vertical stems which I grow in pots. They grow to a maximum of 6 feet / 2m high and no wider than 45cm. My children love them! Simply cut back the side stems to about 10cm at this time of year and you’re good to go. Just remember that pot-grown plants rely totally on you for their food and water. Thick glazed / non-porous pots are best because they retain water and act as insulation in extreme cold. Use the correct compost and food for the plant but most will do well with a regular high potash liquid feed from early spring to late summer. As a gardener I was quite late to fruitgrowing, but I realised quickly that it becomes an addictive hobby. And as a complete bonus I’ve noticed a definite increase in my bee population over the past few years. Free food, and good for the environment too. What could be better?

JOBS FOR If you’ve not dead-headed a plant before it can be a little confusing knowing where to pinch it out from. Regular deadheading encourages more flowers so it’s important to do this if you want your blooms to last longer. Using your finger and thumb, the simplest way to do this is to simply pinch off the faded blooms, together with the stalk, to ensure the plants look tidy. You can avoid fuchsias and bedding lobelia as they don’t’ set much seed.

JULY

Catch your vegetables at their peak and harvest them regularly. A dd unused vegetables to your compost. Sow more beetroot, ca rrots, dwarf French be ans and lettuces. Feed your lawn regularl y but raise your mow er blades a little during dry weath er. This helps the grass to retain some moisture. Remove any fading bloo ms to prevent your pl ants going to seed. Soak your containers at least once a day in hot, sunny weather.

If you are experiencing particularly hot weather and there is a hosepipe ban, you are still allowed to use your hosepipe to top up your pond if you have fish. The Town Crier Magazine | JULY 2018

When it comes to getting the job done, there aren’t many pick-ups more hardcore than the Isuzu D-Max – a muscular all-rounder that just works. Master of all trades and the perfect blend of rugged capability, whether off-road or load-lugging; paired with performance and comfort. The D-Max is masculine enough on its own. But marry it with Icelandic vehicle modifier, Arctic Trucks, and it gets an extra dose of testosterone. The customised, off-road inclined D-Max AT35 has been offered in Nordic territories for some time, but over the last couple of years, UK consumers have been able to have a slice of the action. The Arctic Trucks conversion can be had in two variants: the four-door Double Cab I drove, and the extended cab. Both are built on the existing D-Max Utah specification, but add a few grand to the price-tag. The biggest difference between the AT35 and a normal D-Max are the outsized 35-inch tyres and the broader track. The truck has also been elevated by an extra 55mm. The tyres are so substantial that Arctic Trucks reckons the D-Max can glide over slush and snow, rather than plunge into it. Other outer surface conversions include burlier side steps, and wider wheel-arches.

old-school way, via engine braking. The 164PS 2.0-litre oil-burner might not be as hard-hitting or sophisticated as Mitsubishi’s L200 pick-up on the asphalt, but it has bags of torque from low down to tug you out of bother. Not surprisingly, the Isuzu D-Max AT35 isn’t meant to be a motor you can hoon around twisty back roads; both performance and handling are impacted by the embellishments. It won’t outmanoeuvre BMW’s X5 if that’s what you imagine, but then that’s a long way from the intended market. What does amaze is the AT35’s talent to achieve and sustain motorway speeds without much tyre roar. The ride is very easy-going, too, although it does become quite wallowy the quicker you go, due to the balloon-like tyres. Hypothetically, you could use this special version of the D-Max to do the daily commute, but that would almost be an insult to its mud-plugging abilities.

Pros & Cons

The standard Isuzu suspension has been given a seeing to as well, with superior Fox Performance dampers made to endure the toughest impacts. The additional ground clearance means you won’t ground it out on any off-tarmac obstructions you’re likely to find in Britain. What’s more, the approach and departure angles enable it to confront almost perpendicular inclines without throwing a wobbly.

FAITH MATTERS

Taking Heart in

Uncertain Times W

e live in very uncertain times. I expect it has always been that way, but at this point in the history of our country things feel very uncertain. It was two years ago that the nation voted to leave the European Union yet there seems little certainty as to the future and the UKs future relationship with Europe. The world seems to be more troubled with continuing conflict in the Middle East, the rise of extremism and the polarisation of politics in the western world. All of this may have put some of our decisions on hold. I know of some who had planned to move to Europe who are now waiting to see what our future relationship with Europe will be. Others have held back on spending and investment because they don’t know what resources they may need in the future. Many don’t worry about things like that because they are more concerned about the limited income they have to pay the bills, feed the family or pay off that debt. Others will have lost their job or have started a new one and are overwhelmed by the challenges ahead. In reality nothing is secure in this world, little is certain in life. Uncertainty is a difficult thing to bear. We want to know what is around the corner, where the things we need are going to come from or the prognosis of this or that health problem. I have just got back from the Lebanon, a country with a troubled history. A country with a complex political system where Sunnis, Shias, Christians and Druze live in ghettos often in fear of the other. Then to the east and north is the war

torn country, Syria. Lebanon has received over 1.1 million Syrian, Iraqi and Kurdish refugees. This influx has resulted in the overpopulation of the camps and cities and rising tensions between the Lebanese citizens and the refugees. While there I was interested to discover how the church had reacted to such uncertainty. The amazing thing is that in the potential for complete anarchy the church has learned to rely on God, and in doing that they have learnt to love the ‘other’. In caring for the Muslim or the refugee they have met with God in a very special way. I heard story after story of lives transformed by love. In North Wiltshire we thankfully don’t live in such difficult circumstances but we do live in uncertain times. We don’t know what is around the corner. The one thing that I have learnt over the years is that in everything God is in control and I have to put my trust in him. And one thing out of many that I will take from my trip to Lebanon is that in times of great uncertainty God can be found as we reach out to the ‘other’ in our midst. Perhaps the ‘other’ is the one we would be least likely to speak to normally but in the encounter we discover something of the love of God. God is steadfast, he does not abandon us in times of waiting and uncertainty. He is with us through the journey. And always remember...miracles do happen! In the words of blogger and author Mandy Hale: ‘Trust the wait. Embrace the uncertainty. Enjoy the beauty of becoming. When nothing is certain anything is possible’. Blessings on you all Rev Sam King (revsamking@talktalk.net) Design & Computer Graphics by Alexander S. Grenfell, Calne.
