SPRING 2016

OCTOBER

NOVEMBER

Message from the Mayor Spring is now here which should bring us some warmer weather to compliment what is planned over the next couple of months. The Town’s events season begins in October, starting with our new event, The Good Day His Worship the Mayor Out on Saturday, 22 October. Trevor Vaughan P: 9311 8155 The event has a sustainability M: 0447 374 528 focus with heaps of activities, tvaughan@vicpark.wa.gov.au stalls and entertainment making up the day’s offerings. Find out more about this event, and others planned throughout the season, on page four. Edging closer to summer may also give some of us the kick we need to get out and be more active. For the month of October there is no joining fee for memberships at Aqualife and Leisurelife.

The opening hours at the Leisurelife gym have also been extended for a three month trial, giving you even more time to hit the treadmill. If the outdoors are more your thing, visit our new disc golf park at Taylor Reserve on the foreshore. The Town’s $70 million development of the Lathlain Precinct has really been progressing, which is great to see. The Lathlain Place Zone has been completed, with the seven other zones tracking well. To stay up to date with everything happening in the precinct visit lathlainprecinct.com.au I hope you all enjoy what’s on offer over the next couple of months.

Who’s in your town?

L-R: Heather Johnstone, Luana Lisandro, Peter Melrosa, Maxine Petty, Alston Kwan

Victoria Park Urban Tree Network The Victoria Park Urban Tree Network (VPUTN) is a dedicated team of locals, drawn together by their shared desire to improve the Town’s tree canopy. The group is pro-development, pro-environment and pro-community, focused on spreading the message that development and progress can be inclusive of trees. In only a few months of operation the Network has engaged in collaboration with the Town, moving a motion for an Urban Forest Strategy, which was adopted by Council recently. The Network believes working with the Town will be integral to increasing tree canopies in the area. The group is also aiming to have a broader positive impact on environmental sustainability and planning policy. To progress the Urban Forest Strategy, the Town of Victoria Park has engaged an arborist who is undertaking a comprehensive tree audit of every tree in the Town to provide accurate data on the amount, species, location, health and value of trees on both public and private land – allowing planning and implementation of long-term tree management practices. “We recognise the huge importance trees play in our community, providing health benefits, cooling our suburbs, and undoubtedly improving the appearance of our streetscapes,” said Mayor Trevor Vaughan. “We know that trees are a high priority for our community, and we have been having conversations with groups including the Victoria Park Urban Tree Network to ensure that we end up with long-term plans that meet everyone’s needs.” The results of the tree audit will form the base data required to develop the Urban Forest Strategy. The entire community will have a chance to provide input into the strategy. “Because the community are the biggest winners from trees, we urge everybody to be a part of designing the Urban Forest Strategy so that it delivers the best possible outcome,” said VPUTN member, Peter Melrosa. The VPUTN are always looking for active members to be involved with their initiatives and activities. vicparktrees | vicparktrees.com

New Town rolls out Licence Plate Recognition As part of the Parking Management Plan and to ensure equitable access to limited parking spaces, the Town is rolling out Licence Plate Recognition technology (LPR). LPR is a new tool that is used to monitor parking within the Town more efficiently. A two week notice period ran from 5 to 19 September, with LPR initially only being operated in free, timerestricted parking along Albany Highway and the Aqualife carpark. Due to previous concerns around the potential incorrect infringement of ACROD permit holders, LPR is now a semi-automatic process with the dashboard of parked vehicles now being checked by a Parking Officer. Town leads WA’s Small Business Friendly The Small Business Development Corporation is giving a thumbs up to the Town for our commitment to the Small Business Friendly initiative. The Town has proudly become the first Local Government in WA to sign the Small Business Friendly Charter. The charter pledges a supportive and engaging role towards small business in areas such as regular consultation, offering advice on meeting regulatory obligations and prompt payment of small business invoices. The Town is committed to helping small business foster in our community. All residents and visitors will soon be able to spot the Small Business Friendly logo around the Town. Mayor Trevor Vaughan accepts the Small Business Charter from Minister for Small Business Sean L’Estrange MLA.

Works approved at Lathlain Park The WA Planning Commission has granted approval to the West Coast Eagles for their Development Application seeking approval of works to create two ovals, and prepare part of the site for future works – as per Zone 3 of the Lathlain Precinct Redevelopment Project. The issuing of the approval is the trigger for the commencement of the lease between the Town and the West Coast Eagles. The Dog Exercise Area has been temporarily relocated to the old Lathlain-Carlisle Bowls Club site. Public access to the tennis courts and the large bitumen carpark on Roberts Road has ceased, with alternate tennis courts available for use at the State Tennis Centre, Burswood or at Higgins Park Tennis Club, East Victoria Park. It is anticipated that these works will take a number of months and are likely to be followed by the redevelopment of Zone 2 – Community Activity Zone, and the construction of the main training, administration building and facilities for Zone 3 – West Coast Eagles, on Lathlain Park. For news and updates, visit lathlainprecinct.com.au

Thank you for participating

Public participation for the Evolve project is wrapping up and will finish at the end of October 2016. We have had a lot of interest in the project and have really enjoyed working with the community to shape our future. We would like to thank everyone that has donated their time to attend workshops, participate online, chat to us at stalls and generally be a part of the process. To make sure you have your say before the time is up, visit yourthoughts.victoriapark.wa.gov.au and get involved. The outcomes paper will be made available on Your Thoughts once it is completed, and will be used to develop the Town’s Strategic Community Plan. You will also have a chance to provide feedback on this document once it is developed.

How wrong was I, Aqualife will! After nine lessons I can now swim. Shan and her helpers were so patient and encouraging each week, making every lesson a positive enjoyable experience,” said Melva.
