What a fantastic time to be a part of our Town when we have so much going on!

His Worship the Mayor Trevor Vaughan P: 9311 8155 M: 0447 374 528 tvaughan@vicpark.wa.gov.au

We are in full planning mode for a wonderful summer packed full of events and there are quite a few big projects and strategies about to enter a community engagement period.

We are developing our first ever Public Open Space Strategy, which will set out a framework for how we use and manage our public areas for years to come.

Both of these documents will have a big impact on future planning for the Town so I encourage you to get involved when it is time to have your say. I am excited to see our planning come to fruition in future years, and see the Town transform into a thriving inner-city locality with a world class sports and entertainment precinct to rival other global capital cities.

Mayor Trevor Vaughan

We are also awaiting the Western Australian Planning Commission to give us the green light on consulting our community about our draft Local Planning Strategy. We are planning for our population to double by 2050 and we need to start considering how we house this growing population in our relatively small area. The Local Planning Strategy sets out guidelines for future planning and development, and provides the link between the State Government’s vision and directives, and the Town’s local decision-making to accommodate growth.

The Village Hub is open to all

Connect Victoria Park Village Hub As with raising a child, it takes a village to age well. Connect Victoria Park Inc. is inviting locals to help turn our town into a village and make Vic Park the best place for people aged over 55 in Western Australia. The new Village Hub project brings people together to build a sense of community, share skills and knowledge and enjoy life. It encourages people of all ages to contribute to a community where we know and care about our neighbours. “It’s been a big boon for me,” says Village Hub member Robin Gunn, who attends weekly lunches. “Before I was alone at home with my cat.” Inspired by a movement born in Boston in the late ‘90s, the Village Hub is the first of its kind in WA and the second in Australia. The Village Hub provides a help centre to assist its

members in finding solutions for staying healthy, engaged, and living independently. Mr Gunn was assisted with obtaining a manual wheel chair and making adaptations to his housing to make life a little easier. The Village Hub also offers courses, classes and groups, opportunities to volunteer and exciting ways to participate in life in the Town, including the new community kitchen and community choir. The Village Hub is open to everyone, not just over 55s. People over 55 can join as members and help shape activities and services. Others may become a friend of the Village Hub and through the Neighbour to Neighbour Program, meet older neighbours and help with small tasks such as dog walking and shopping. For more information on the Village Hub, visit www.connectvictoriapark.org

Growth Series

program

Putting a plan in place Previous growth series articles have considered some of the major structural elements of a liveable, functional city – transport, density, activity centres and main streets. While we know that all of these pieces together will make Victoria Park a great place to live and work, we need to make sure we get the mix right. We also know that some types of land uses simply don’t work well together – such as housing and heavy industries, and we need to consider those special pockets where we want to keep the existing character alive while balancing future needs. So how do we go about increasing density and improving liveability in Victoria Park, while preserving all the great things people already love? There are two main strategic planning instruments that will guide the overall layout and density of a place in Western Australia – the Local Planning Strategy and the Local Planning Scheme. These two tools can be described as the “what” and the “how” of urban planning in Victoria Park. We are in the process of preparing our first ever Local Planning Strategy that will provide a broad framework for “what” sort of place Victoria Park will become. Read the full article and the entire Growth Series at vicpark.info/growthseries

It’s time to get that idea funded! The Town provides community grants up to $10,000 for projects within our local community. Grant categories include: • community development • art, culture and heritage • sport and recreation • healthy communities • community safety and crime prevention • environmental sustainability • economic development

Applications are open from 1 September until 31 October. For additional guidelines and application details visit vicpark.info/grants

Wandering cats Town Rangers are humanely trapping cats in residential areas to try and reduce numbers of feral cats in the Town. The traps will not distinguish between feral cats and pets, so if your cat roams away from your property during the day or night, please ensure they are microchipped and registered so we can contact you if they are picked up by the Rangers. By law, all cats must be microchipped, sterilised and registered with the Town. If your cat is impounded, there will be a cost to retrieve it. All vets offer microchipping. If you have several animals needing to be microchipped there are mobile providers who will come to you. See page 4 for details on how you can get your cat microchipped for $10 on 30 September. Information about registering your cat or dog can be found on our website.

Economic Development Strategy

H AV E YO U R S AY

The draft Economic Development Strategy will be presented to Council on 11 September for approval to seek public submissions on the draft document. The Economic Development Strategy will guide how we support our local businesses and encourage partnerships and investment within the Town. The strategy lays out short and long term action across the next five years.

Public Open Space Strategy The Town is going to be preparing a Public Open Space Strategy which will provide a guide for how the Town provides and protects public open space for the benefit of the entire community. Public Open Space is any piece of land that is used by community for any recreational purpose and includes things likes parks, sporting reserves and nature reserves. The Town is planning for a doubling of our population by 2050, and the provision of green spaces will be more important than ever.

Local planning policies The Town is reviewing all of its local planning policies over the next year. Our local planning policies dictate how you can develop your property, so it’s really important to know what they contain. We are seeking your feedback on the first three policies up for review: LPP 3 – Non-Residential Uses In or Adjacent to Residential Areas LPP 4 – Mixed Use Development and Residential Uses in Non-Residential Areas LPP 5 – Mixed Residential/Commercial Development Visit yourthoughts.victoriapark.wa.gov.au/lppr to read the policies and give feedback. Hard copies are available at the Town’s administration building and the Victoria Park Library. Feedback must be received by 2 October.

There will be many opportunities for community input into this strategy, with lots of different ways to contribute. For now we are asking if you would like to be involved, and what level of involvement you would like to have. If you want to be part of this project when it gets up and running, register at yourthoughts.victoriapark. wa.gov.au/pos

Proposed dog exercise areas Under the Dog Act, the Town is reviewing its designated dog exercise areas. View the proposed areas and make a comment before 24 September at yourthoughts.victoriapark.wa.gov.au/pdea

Need a bigger recycling bin?

Pipes for Perth on Albany Highway The Water Corporation’s Pipes for Perth project aims to replace old sections of Perth's water main network – some pipes are more than 100 years old! Replacing the pipes is essential to avoid future bursts and leaks. The Water Corporation is currently working on the section of Albany Hwy between McMillan St and Alday St in East Victoria Park. Works are due to be completed before the end of the year, but there will be some disruption to traffic and our local businesses. Be sure to show your support for our local businesses by shopping local during this time. For further information about this project email pipesforperth@ watercorporation.com.au or call 9420 3529.

Cleanaway can supply larger 360 litre recycling bins on request to residential properties. This free upgrade is only available until the end of October 2018. Call 6557 6907 to make a request.

ATO Tax Help program The Digital Hub is partnering with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) to run the Tax Help program until October 2018. Tax Help is a network of trained volunteers who help people prepare their returns at tax time each year. Volunteers are recruited from the general community and the ATO oversees the recruitment, training, accreditation and support. The program is designed to help people on low incomes with basic individual tax returns. Tax Help volunteers can assist eligible taxpayers in the following areas: •

completing straightforward personal tax returns using myTax

completing applications for refund of imputation credits

completing a non-lodgement advice for those who do not need to submit a tax return.

If your income is around $60,000 or less for the year, you may be eligible for Tax Help. Tax Help volunteers are not able to assist taxpayers with more complex tax affairs such as income from business, investment properties, rent, voluntary agreements or royalties. Bookings are necessary and can be made by calling 9329 4238.
