Message from the Mayor Hello everyone, Welcome to the autumn edition of Life in the Park. We have lots of exciting events and activities happening in the Town over the next few months. Most importantly the Evolve project is now well underway, with over 120 community members engaging in the public participation phase. I am so proud and excited that the Town and community have embarked on this journey together and I am sure that the project will produce a great result for all.
His Worship the Mayor Trevor Vaughan P: 9311 8155 M: 0447 374 528 tvaughan@vicpark.wa.gov.au
I believe the biggest point of difference for this project, is the way in which the project team is engaging with the community. Those interested in getting involved have the opportunity to elect how
they would like to participate whether it is face-to-face, by email, over the phone or in a group workshop – the communication channel is entirely up to you. This project is vitally important for anyone who lives, works, visits or owns property in the Town. It is your opportunity to really influence the direction that the Town will take in the future, so I encourage everyone to take part. If you are not already involved and would like to be, please visit Your Thoughts at yourthoughts.victoriapark.wa.gov.au for more information.

The Victoria Park Transition Network The Victoria Park Transition Network (VPTN) is a grassroots network of passionate residents who are interested in ideas and projects to make the Town of Victoria Park a stronger, happier and more sustainable community. The VPTN forms part of the global Transition Network – which supports and trains communities to become more connected and environmentally sustainable – and aims to create projects and initiatives that are designed to lower energy consumption, increase adaptability to change, foster creativity, and build a tighter community. Little Free Libraries Inspired by the international Little Free Libraries (LFLs) movement, where community members install a little library in their neighbourhood and people are invited to take a book from the little library and leave a book in exchange, the VPTN pitched the idea of installing LFLs in the Town at one of the Vic Park Collective’s micro-grant SOUP nights in 2015. Despite not winning the grant, the Town of Victoria Park and the Vic Park Collective supported the project by providing the VPTN with a plan and funds to build and install the LFLs, along with the Victoria Park Library providing donated books to initially stock the little libraries. During August and September, Greg Miller from The Joy of Wood conducted hands-on workshops to teach local residents, including adults and children, how to build the libraries, and as a result of the workshops 10 LFLs have now been completed and are being installed in neighbourhoods around the Town. Plastic Free Night Markets In 2015, VPTN received a grant from the Western Australian Waste Authority to work with the TGIF Hawkers Market to become a plastic-free night market. During a three-month trial the VPTN provided stall holders with compostable and biodegradable food and beverage containers, which resulted in most of the hawkers market stalls now going plastic-free. Other recent and ongoing projects by the VPTN include: bike-powered movie nights; a Living Smart course; DIY workshops for making natural body care products and healthy low sugar drinks; free movie nights at the Victoria Park Centre for the Arts; a local bicycle crawl; and a plastic bag reduction strategy. Get Involved The VPTN welcomes new members and meet on the third Tuesday of each month from 6.30pm – 8pm at the Vic Park MiniLab, 874 Albany Highway, East Victoria Park.
