LATHLAIN UPDATE
SUMMER 2016/17
Members of the Vic Park Collective enjoying the new parklet
DECEMBER JANUARY FEBRUARY
Message from the Mayor Welcome to the summer edition of Life in the Park. With that long, cold winter now behind us, I am looking forward to enjoying the sunshine and the events that are happening in the coming months. The Town’s events season has well and truly kicked off! Celebrate the New Year with the Twilight Trios concert series in January, followed by the not-to-be-missed Music by Moonlight tenth anniversary concert on the Burswood Park Foreshore in early March.
His Worship the Mayor Trevor Vaughan P: 9311 8155 M: 0447 374 528 tvaughan@vicpark.wa.gov.au
Keep the kids active and entertained these school holidays by visiting the Library to borrow the new board games or sign up for the Summer Reading Club; enrol them in school holiday swimming lessons at the Aqualife Swim School; and take advantage of Leisurelife’s Just 4 Kids School Holiday Program, which is packed full of great activities and excursions, including a Harry Potter potions class! The Lathlain Precinct Redevelopment Project is moving along with upgrades to Rayment Park
happening throughout the coming months. To stay up to date, visit lathlainprecinct.com.au. Lastly, I’d like to encourage as many of you as possible to nominate for the 2017 Australia Day Citizenship Awards. This is a fantastic opportunity to recognise an outstanding young person, individual, or organisation who are making a positive contribution to our community and who represent the spirit of Victoria Park. I wish you a safe and enjoyable festive season. Have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
Mayor Trevor Vaughan

Vic Park Collective Have you seen the Vic Park Collective’s latest project? The colourful parklet in front of Crow Books on Albany Highway was commissioned by the Town of Victoria Park and built by volunteers for the whole community to enjoy. This parklet is a perfect example of what the Vic Park Collective is about: fostering collaborations between local businesses, residents and the Town to help make Victoria Park “uniquely awesome”. The Vic Park Collective is a grassroots organisation formed in 2013 that inspires locals to get involved in their community. It was born out of the desire of local business owners, operators and residents to share public spaces and engage with each other to enhance our dynamic and prosperous community. Since its beginnings, the Collective has instigated a range of community events, projects and initiatives, including: urban art installations; Vic Park Neighbourhood Soup, a micro-granting dinner for creative projects that benefit the community; Collective Treasures suitcase markets; Bring One Get One Tree campaign for reusable coffee cups; and co-creation of the inaugural Vic Park Summer Street Party in 2015.
The Collective has a keen interest in sustainability issues, and advocates for measures to make the Town more walkable and bike-friendly. In September, they invited the community to enjoy a bit of fun on the asphalt along Kent Street for Walk Ride Stride; a car-free event organised in partnership with the Town. Recent sustainability initiatives included the Victopia workshop, to inform the Town’s Strategic Plan in regards to social, economic and environmental impacts. The Collective has several working groups developing exciting projects and welcomes new members and volunteers. In the pipeline are another car-free experience in March and a cool summer pop-up event in late January. “There is so much talent and desire for connection in Vic Park”, said Vic Park Collective Chair, Jessica Miller. “And the Town of Victoria Park has been a key partner and collaborator all along.”

New Waste Collection Services
A number of new waste collection services are now available to Town residents including: Green Lid Bin collection days: • One (1) car battery and one (1) 5L container of waste oil can be collected each week on your Green Lid Bin collection day. • Waste oil containers must be fully sealed. Place the car battery and/or waste oil container on the ground next to the bin. • Do not place batteries or waste oil containers in the recycling bin – this will contaminate the recyclables. Yellow (Recycling) Lid Bin collection days: • Pots and pans and small household appliances (toasters, kettles etc.) with the electrical cord removed can now be placed in the Yellow (Recycling) Lid Bin. If you have an existing recycling bin and need to have it upgraded to a larger recycling bin, please contact Cleanaway on 6557 6907. Further information about these services can be found in the Domestic Waste & Recycling Guide 2017 and on the website victoriapark.wa.gov.au.

Armadale Train Line Shutdown
6 – 22 January | Plan ahead
As part of the construction works for the new six-platform Perth Stadium Station, a 17-day closure, including a number of partial and full-line closures, of the Armadale train line will be required in January. The shutdown will take place from the evening of Friday, 6 January through to the last service on Sunday, 22 January 2017. During the disruption, all Armadale and Thornlie line passengers will be affected. Limited train services will operate on a 30-minute frequency on weekdays, with line closures on weeknights and weekends. Train replacement buses will operate when trains are cancelled, however travel times will take longer than usual so Transperth is encouraging passengers to plan ahead and allow extra travel time for your journey, and where you can, try walking, cycling or carpooling to work.
Residents of the Town should be aware that during the shutdown the Mint Street level crossing will be closed on weekdays and local traffic will be diverted to the Miller Street bridge. There will also be increased bus activity in the area. Route maps are available at transperth.wa.gov.au. To find out how your journey will be impacted by the shutdown and to plan ahead, visit transperth.wa.gov.au or call the Transperth InfoLine on 13 62 13.
Fire Breaks
Firebreaks must be in place in the Town of Victoria Park from 1 November and maintained until 30 April each year. Under the Bush Fires Act 1954, all owners and occupiers of land in the Town must establish and maintain firebreaks to the following specifications: Land with an area of 2000m2 or less Remove inflammable matter from all of the land, except living trees, shrubs, plants under cultivation and lawn, by means of ploughing, cultivating or slashing to a height of no more than 50mm. Land with an area over 2000m2 1. Firebreaks of a minimum width and height of three metres are to be cleared immediately inside all external boundaries of the land. 2. Firebreaks to a minimum width and height of three metres are to be cleared immediately surrounding all buildings situated on the land; and any place where inflammable liquids and gas products are kept. For further information call 9311 8111 or visit victoriapark.wa.gov.au.
Tree Audit The Town of Victoria Park has started to log a record of every street tree within its borders, which will lead to a change in pruning practices to save time, money and resources. Every single street tree in the Town will be audited by an independent arborist. The information collated from the audit will update the Town’s records and help to identify which trees need pruning. All precincts within the Town will be pruned as per the recommendations from this audit. To ensure that records are kept up to date, and to make the process more efficient, audits will be carried out each year prior to pruning and trees will not be pruned if they do not require pruning at the time of the audit. For further information call the Park Life team on 9311 8111.

Thank you for participating Public participation for the Evolve project finished at the end of October 2016. We had a lot of interest in the project and really enjoyed working with the community to shape our future. We would like to thank everyone that has donated their time to attend workshops, participate online, chat to us at stalls and generally be a part of the process. The outcomes paper that will be used to develop the Town's Strategic Community Plan will be available to the public in the coming months.
