The Town recently celebrated Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week by displaying a range of inspirational posters throughout the Town. The posters featured portrait photographs of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people across the community, proclaiming their shared belief in reconciliation. I’d like to thank everyone involved for their participation. I’d also like to mention the tremendous support from the business community, with McDonald’s East Victoria Park, Curtin University, Bunnings, NAB and ANZ Banks, and local retailers allowing us space to display the posters. I’ve been fortunate enough to view a fantastic documentary funded by the Town called War, Hate and the Lizard about World War II veteran and Victoria Park local Milton ‘Snow’ Fairclough. This short film captures the personal reflection of Snow’s time as a prisoner of war (POW) on the Thai Burma Railway during World War II. On 14 August 1945, Japan signed a terms of surrender to the Allies, which signified an end to World War II, which is now known as Victory in the Pacific Day (VP Day). August 2015 marks the 70th anniversary since the celebration of VP Day and provides a time to reflect upon the freedom regained by Snow and his fellow POWs. The Town is looking into broadcasting rights and classification of the film, which will pave the way for future screenings. It’s a fascinating story about a remarkable man.

POPP The Town of Victoria Park has launched an innovative community initiative with the installation of five Public Outdoor Ping Pong (POPP) tables, featuring bold, creative designs by selected Western Australian artists, in designated parks around the Town.

Is your dog microchipped? The Dog Act 1976 states that from 1 November 2015, the owner of a dog that has reached three months of age must ensure that the dog is microchipped. A vet, vet nurse or a person with the relevant qualifications from a registered training provider is able to implant a microchip in your dog. If you lose your microchipped dog, it will make it easier for you to be reunited. The dog’s microchip can be scanned by the ranger or a vet, which will reveal the owner’s contact details. A person who fails to ensure their dog is microchipped on and after 1 November 2015 is liable for a fine of up to $5,000.
