AND MUCH MORE . . .

Message from the Mayor Hello everyone.

His Worship the Mayor Trevor Vaughan P: 9311 8155 M: 0447 374 528

Time really has flown by, it feels like yesterday that I was celebrating Christmas and ringing in the New Year!

As you may have heard, the amalgamation of the Town of Victoria Park and the City of South Perth will not be going ahead after the majority of electors in the City’s poll voted ‘no’ to the proposed amalgamation. However, the work that has been done on local government reform will not have been in vain. Whilst we will be remaining independent, the Town and the City will continue to actively work together for the benefit of both communities. This may include investigating further resource sharing, joint activities and opportunities to create efficiencies across both local governments. Due to the rescission of Governor’s Orders, the City of Canning will remain intact and the suburbs north‑west of Leach Highway will not be joining the Town.

I’d like to thank everyone for attending the community workshop we held regarding the Town Centre Redevelopment in February. There was a lot of passionate community feedback which will help guide us as we go back to the drawing board on the project. Your input is invaluable and Council won’t be making any critical decisions on the Town Centre without community support. I hope you enjoy this Autumn edition of Life in the Park. Easter is just around the corner and I’d like to wish you and your family a very happy and safe holiday, along with a bountiful easter egg hunt, and that you continue to enjoy our vibrant community!

Mayor Trevor Vaughan

Guide Dogs WA ...is Western Australia’s primary provider of Guide Dog mobility services to people who are blind or vision impaired, and is owned and operated by VisAbility. The not-for-profit organisation assists people of all ages in their homes, at school, at work and in the community, ensuring that people who are blind or vision impaired share a quality of life equal to other Western Australians. The Guide Dog training takes place from Guide Dogs WA’s headquarters in Victoria Park, working in a variety of locations to learn the skills they need to travel safely in different types of environments.

© Guides Dogs WA. Michael Pullinger and his wife Dawn with Guide Dog Ida at graduation. Michael is a Victoria Park resident and suffers from a condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa. He graduated with his Guide Dog in July last year in a ceremony held at Guide Dogs WA headquarters in Victoria Park.

Victoria Park Resident, Michael Pullinger, graduated with Guide Dog Ida in July 2014 and the two have since formed an unbreakable bond. “Ida has been the best thing to happen to me since my marriage. The training was intense yet terribly rewarding. With my eyes closed I let Ida guide me. I can now walk with my head high in the air and not having to look at my feet when walking.” By law, Guide Dogs are permitted access to all public places, including hotels, supermarkets, cafes, and local businesses, and are allowed to travel on all public transport, including buses, taxis and even on aeroplanes. A Guide Dog must not be distracted. Members of the community are reminded not to

talk to, touch, make eye contact or offer food to the Guide Dog whilst it is working and wearing a white harness. To ensure fair access for all, Guide Dogs are provided free of charge to people who are blind or severely vision impaired. It costs more than $30,000 and takes two years to train each Guide Dog and Guide Dogs WA is totally reliant on the generosity of the community to fund the program. The National Broadband Network has arrived in Victoria Park!

The National Broadband Network is an upgrade to Australia’s existing telecommunications network and is replacing some of the existing landline networks for phone and internet services in your area. So to keep using affected services, you need to move them to the NBN before they’re switched off.* Some existing landline networks for phone and internet services are scheduled to be switched off and replaced by the NBN in parts of Victoria Park from 20 March 2015.* What do you need to do?

If your address in Victoria Park is shaded in the map shown, the NBN is now available to your premise and some existing landline networks for phone and internet services in your area are scheduled to be switched off from 20 March 2015. *Contact your preferred phone company or internet service provider to move your services to the NBN before this date and they will take care of the rest. My NBN Neighbour

Don’t let any of your neighbours get left behind without a landline phone or internet service. If you live in an area in Victoria Park shaded on the map, make sure your neighbours also know about the scheduled 20 March 2015 deadline. NBN Co doesn’t want anyone in Victoria Park left without a home phone or internet service. For further information visit www.nbnco.com.au/switch or call the NBN Co Contact Centre on 1800 687 626. If you need an Interpreter, please call Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National) on 131 450 and ask for the NBN Co Contact Centre. *Services provided over the NBN will be replacing phone and internet services provided over many of the existing landline networks, including copper and the majority of Hybrid Fibre Coaxial networks within the fixed line footprint. Services provided over existing fibre networks (including in‑building, health and education networks) and some special and business services may not be affected. To find out if your services will be affected, please contact your current phone or internet provider. For further information, visit www.nbnco.com.au/ switchoff or call 1800 687 626.

Designated Accessible Parking Bays Designated accessible parking enables community members and visitors to Victoria Park to access shops, facilities and the community at large. The Town’s Accessible Parking Facilities publication is a guide to assist valid ACROD permit holders to locate designated accessible parking bays which are owned and managed by the Town of Victoria Park. The guide contains information on how to acquire an ACROD permit in WA, how to report a problem with a bay, along with locations of designated accessible parking bays.

Perth Garden Festival The Perth Garden Festival has found a new home in our very own backyard at the picturesque McCallum Park. The festival will run over four days from 30 April to 3 May 2015. This year the event will feature WA’s largest plant market, offering over 1,400m2 of beautiful plants for sale! If you can name it (and even if you can’t) you’re almost guaranteed to find it there along with everything else your garden could possibly want or need. With everything from composters and sculptures, to fireplaces and outdoor ovens, to an interactive children’s activity playground and even entire outdoor landscapes – there will be endless things to see, do, try and buy. With free seminars and expert advice on hand all festival long, it’s the perfect place to find the answers to life’s all important gardening questions! There’ll even be 1,000m2 of beautifully landscaped gardens to explore with the SunSmart Landscape Show Gardens shaping up to be the biggest and best in event history.

You can download a copy from the Town’s website.

Mayor Trevor Vaughan says the Town is extremely proud to be the venue sponsor for Perth Garden Festival and is hopeful the festival will bring in business for local retailers as well. “I urge everyone to head down to the 2015 Perth Garden Festival and whilst you’re here visit our vibrant café strip on Albany Highway and see what the Town of Victoria Park has to offer!”

For further information contact the Town’s Seniors, Access & Inclusion Officer on 9311 8111.

The Perth Garden Festival has something for everyone so whether you’re a green thumb or a greenhorn come down to McCallum Park and pick up a little bit of greenery and lots of gardening inspiration.

Refugee Welcome Zone In October last year the Town celebrated the signing of a Refugee Welcome Zone Declaration at the Walk Together Family Fun Day followed by the release of two white doves and a combined walk together of solidarity around John MacMillan Park. Over 2,000 people attended the event. By signing the declaration, the Town is committing in spirit to welcoming refugees into the community, upholding their human rights, demonstrating compassion and enhancing cultural and religious diversity. “The Town has a rich cultural heritage and we are committed to promoting and celebrating harmony and diversity in our local community,” Mayor Trevor Vaughan said. “The event was a wonderful way for people to come together to raise awareness for the circumstances of refugees and asylum seekers and to send a positive message about Australians being a friendly and welcoming people.”
