Message from the Mayor It’s hard to believe we’re into autumn already.

His Worship the Mayor Trevor Vaughan P: 9311 8155 M: 0447 374 528 tvaughan@vicpark.wa.gov.au

With a huge summer of events, the Town has been a hub of activity. The Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay made a splash, arriving at Burswood via water ski in February, and our Twilight Trio of outdoor concerts got everyone up and dancing.

Even though the weather will be cooling shortly, there’s still plenty happening in the Town of Victoria Park. Our Eat, Ride ‘n’ Enjoy campaign is an exciting opportunity for anyone heading to a concert or sporting match at Optus Stadium, and for our local businesses to capitalise on the additional foot traffic that these events will bring.

For those who prefer a different kind of cultural experience, the Town of Victoria Park Arts Season is once again upon us. The Town awarded several grants to community groups, not-forprofit organisations, businesses and individuals to participate in the Arts Season this year, and there really is something for every art lover. A copy of the program is included with this issue of Life in the Park. With so much on offer over the next couple of months, I look forward to seeing you out and about in the Town soon.

Mayor Trevor Vaughan

We’re encouraging eventgoers to grab a bite to eat (or drink), with more than 30 bars, restaurants and cafés offering discounts and deals for Optus Stadium ticketholders. You can then travel to the stadium on one of the free buses or trains, making it a great day or night out in the Town.

Who’s in your town?

103 year old Sheelah Rudman.

Sheelah Rudman For a person who was told at age seven, she had infantile paralysis and would never walk again, long-time Town resident Sheelah Rudman is getting around pretty well these days. The spritely senior citizen, due to turn 104 in April, moved to Vic Park in her teens after being born in Northam. “There was no medication in those days, I just had to do all my exercises till I was able to walk again, and then I went on to be the best runner in school,” Sheelah said. Sheelah says she has hardly ever been sick a day in her life and credits this to keeping busy by volunteering, doing crosswords, knitting, cooking and being looked after her whole life by 73 year old daughter Barbara. “She’s my only child and best friend. We’ve always

Follow your Town!

lived together, to this very day. “She has kept me going, and I’m still around because of her,” she said. Sheelah has been volunteering at Harold Hawthorne Community Centre for 47 years, and still goes into the centre once a week. “The key is to keep doing things, and keep the mind active,” she said. Sheelah only recently gave up her driver’s license at age 99 and still takes short walks up and down her street, two to three times a day, to ‘keep the juices flowing’. Harold Hawthorne Community Centre has been helping people stay independent and involved in the community since 1968. Visit hhcentre.org for more info.

Activity centres Previous Growth Series articles have explored accommodating future growth of the Town into a dynamic inner-city neighbourhood of around 75,000 people by 2050. Just as increasing the supply of housing and affordability will be important, the Town also needs to plan for future economic growth. Activity centres consist of a combination of offices, retail, higher-density housing, entertainment, community, education and medical services. They provide hubs for commercial and employment growth, public transport, and promote economic and social vitality. Activity centres, particularly those with train stations, are a focus of the WA Government’s METRONET program. The Town is preparing a Local Planning Strategy with locations likely to include Albany Highway, Burswood, Curtin University, Causeway Precinct, train stations, and Berwick Street.

Community focus GO Edwards Park The Town has begun Stage 1 construction works at GO Edwards Park in Burswood. The reserve is a popular destination for weddings and functions. The five-stage $3.5 million upgrade will include a nature play area, water sensitive urban design, bird hides, an increase in trees, a new path network linking Victoria Park to the Burswood Peninsula, and enhanced visibility though the reserve to encourage visitors and discourage anti-social behaviour. Last year the Town undertook a tender process for the Stage 1 construction works. After thoroughly assessing each of the tenders, LD TOTAL received the highest total weighted score. Work began in February and is expected to be complete by June this year.

Community participation and input are valued components of the future planning needed for the Town’s vision to be a dynamic place for everyone. To read the whole story visit vicpk.co/growth4

State Underground Power Program The Town has been successful in its applications for underground power to be extended in Victoria Park and Carlisle. As part of the State Underground Power Program, the Town applied for all remaining residential areas still with overhead power lines to be upgraded. The areas selected are Victoria Park West, Victoria Park East and Carlisle North. (These areas are not defined by suburb boundaries, but are generic project areas to broadly describe each.) Construction is set to begin in late 2018, and will take between 14 and

18 months. Disruption to residents will be kept to a minimum as most of the new cables are installed underground by directional drilling. Detailed electrical design is currently being undertaken, which will determine the total cost of the project and will allow Council to consider and set the service charge. Every property owner will be contacted individually by mail and advised when Council has set the cost of the service charge. There will be several payment options available.
