EVENTING IN THE PARK
AND MUCH MORE . . .
Message from the Mayor Hello everyone.
support to recognise the river as a natural boundary.
Summer is always a great time in the Town, there’s always something exciting happening and His Worship the Mayor lots of things to see and do. This Trevor Vaughan edition of Life in the Park contains P: 9311 8155 some of the activities and events M: 0447 374 528 on offer and will give you some great ideas on what you can get up to during the warmer months.
As we move forward with amalgamation the Town of Victoria Park will continue to ask the State Government to provide adequate funding towards amalgamation. This is vitally important to effectively transitioning to a joint new local government body so that the costs are not passed onto ratepayers. We will endeavour to keep our residents and ratepayers up‑to‑date as best we can with regards to reform.
Since my last update we’ve had some big announcements coming out of the Town of Victoria Park, particularly to do with local government reform. On 22 October the Minister for Local Government and Communities announced that the Town of Victoria Park and City of South Perth will amalgamate (including a portion of the City of Canning) and will retain the whole of the Burswood Peninsula. The Battle for Burswood has been won. I’d like to thank our communities, Elected Members and staff in Victoria Park and South Perth for their unwavering
Lastly, I’d like to wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. There’s nothing better than taking some time off to spend with family and friends. Keep cool and enjoy the festive break! See you in 2015.
Mayor Trevor Vaughan

Brightwater Care Group – Oats Street Brightwater Oats Street is a world‑leading rehabilitation facility for people aged 18 – 65 with acquired brain injury, located on Oats Street in East Victoria Park. It has recently been re‑opened following a $20 million dollar redevelopment and often hosts researchers and health professionals, from both national and international centres, who study how the program enables clients to achieve greater levels of independence over the course of their rehabilitation, using the latest research on brain plasticity. Brain injury can happen from an accident such as a car crash or through a stroke or infection such as meningitis. Clients often arrive at Oats Street following months in hospital and need to learn all the basic life skills again, such as dressing, grooming, cooking, social skills and negotiating their local community so that they can use the bank, buy food, catch the
bus and join in social events. Oats Street is staffed 24 hours‑ a‑day and has a large team of occupational therapists, speech pathologists, physiotherapists, social workers, psychologists, support workers and medical staff to support clients. It enables people to re-learn these skills for living by reaching a series of goals. As they meet each set of goals – for example, being able to prepare their own meals – they progress through five different accommodation settings which are progressively more independent, until they are living independently in their own onsite unit with support close by if they need it. Clients often take up to two years to move through the program and, upon graduation, move back to their own home or to an assisted living facility. Interacting with their local community is a really important part of the rehabilitation for the people at Oats Street and the Town of Victoria Park is the perfect place for the program, because everyone is so friendly! Due to
their brain injury many find it difficult to plan a trip to the shop, remember how to use money or even negotiate a busy carpark. Some clients also use wheelchairs to get around, which adds another level of complexity to accessing their local area. Clients at Oats Street can regularly be found at the Victoria Park Community Garden for gardening therapy, down at the local shops with their occupational therapist and a shopping list re‑learning strategies for smart shopping, at the library or grabbing a coffee with friends at one of the many great cafes on Albany Highway. It’s important to remember that people with acquired brain injury might need extra time to understand what people are saying to them, but many love to have a chat, so if you meet anyone from Oats Street stop and say g’day! In 2013 the Town of Victoria Park profiled and shared the incredible stories of seven local residents of all abilities, who are contributing to the rich fabric and strength of our local community. The Town is undertaking the project again in 2014 featuring both new and familiar faces. Artist Andy McGregor captured their life through his lens to produce some amazing images. Included here are this year’s My Life, My Place participants and their stories. You will also find these posted around Town, and you can visit the Town’s website to see their short films. Chris and Joel AC / DC is the soundtrack to Chris and Joel’s lives, and a particular verse from a classic captures the dedication and conviction Chris has when it comes to his son, who he can’t imagine life without. “You know I’m losin’ sleep, but I’m in too deep. Like a body needs blood, no doubt about it, can’t live without it [Joel]...”

Ingrid Ingrid is a passionate self‑advocate who has dedicated her life to building an inclusive and accessible community. Ingrid was one of the original participants to trail individualised planning for people with a disability, which resulted in Ingrid living independently within the community, with the support of her family and friends. Wilf The Town of Victoria Park runs through Wilf’s veins. It’s his life blood. He was born and bred in the Town, raised his family in the Town, and to this day continues to reside in the Town. Wilf’s dedication and commitment to
his local community has helped to transform it on many levels, to which we are the unknowing beneficiaries. Clare Clare is a happy-go-lucky seven year old who loves to play and get up to mischief, just like any other kid. Clare happens to be non‑verbal and has autism, but as her family state, these are just personality traits, and do not define Clare as a person. Marg With over 20 years of teaching experience, Marg has been instrumental in designing the Victoria Park English Conversation Classes which supports culturally and linguistically diverse community groups to practice their conversational skills, while learning about the Town’s culture and community. Peter Peter and his wife have dedicated their lives to serving local communities through their Christian faith. The couple founded and opened the Christian Centre for Social Action in the Town over 18 years ago, and have been serving the vulnerable, homeless, marginalised and socially isolated ever since.
Michael Michael is described by his family and friends as a gentle and kind-hearted soul, with a smile that could light up the Town. It’s his warmth and good humour which captures your attention, urging you to get to know him and to find out more about this wonderful young man.
