Message from the Mayor Hello everyone. I’d like to thank everyone who came down to Lathlain Place for our Light Up Lathlain event in May. His Worship the Mayor It was a really fantastic afternoon Trevor Vaughan celebrating the launch of the new P: 9311 8155 M: 0447 374 528 and improved Lathlain Place, the upgrade of which makes up Zone Four in the Town’s Lathlain Precinct Redevelopment Project (LPRP). The LPRP provides significant and far-reaching community benefits - benefits that will make a positive impact on not just the immediate community and the Town but also the wider Perth community. We had a jam-packed calendar the last couple of months, check out page five for more details on some terrific events that took place right here in the Town. It’s events like these that further position the Town as a great place to visit to have a memorable experience. In other news, at the February Council meeting, Council resolved to stop the Town Centre

Redevelopment Project. This was based on feedback we received from the community during the public consultation process. Now, the Town is reviewing all of the feedback received, which includes over 300 individual submissions, a petition, and the detailed notes from the public meeting attended by almost 400 people. The feedback will be analysed and collated over the next few months and a closure report is being finalised for the Council detailing the lessons learned. There will be no further action on this project by the Town unless there is clear indication from the community that they would like to see the area rejuvenated. We’re heading toward budget time, and staff at the Town will be looking to finalising next financial year’s budget in the coming months.

The Men’s Shed offers an opportunity to make new friends and work on projects.

comfortable space.

Victoria Park Men’s Shed Tucked away in the corner of the Kensington Police and Community Youth Centre (PCYC) on Anketell Street is a small shed stocked with bits of timber, wood‑working machines and a fully-equipped tool room. This is the Victoria Park Men’s Shed, a joint project between Kensington PCYC and Victoria Park Rotary. Membership is $60 per year and is open to all men in the area who want to get together with other blokes to work on small projects and have a yarn in a

The Western Australian Men’s Shed Association recognises a men’s shed as “any community‑based, non-profit, non‑commercial organisation that is accessible to all men and whose primary activity is the provision of a safe, friendly and welcoming environment where men are able to work on meaningful projects at their own pace in their own time in the company of other men. A major objective is to advance the health and wellbeing of their male members and to encourage social inclusion”. The Victoria Park Men’s Shed meets every Monday and Thursday between 9am to 12 noon. It’s been open for 18 months and members have been kept busy assisting with community projects, including making the poppies for the Town’s Field of Remembrance commemoration, and making the wooden soldier cutouts for the Victoria Park RSL Anzac Eve Service (with material supplied by Bunnings, East Victoria Park). Jack Beere, co-ordinator at the Men’s Shed, says besides the

projects they work on, a major appeal of the Victoria Park Men’s Shed is the social aspect, where members can come to just have a chat, have a cup of coffee and biscuits and hang out with others. “We try to build things and if we don’t know how to do it we sit down and have a chat about it,” said Jack, whilst cracking a smile. Besides wood‑working, the Men’s Shed also has an ample veggie garden, growing such produce as lettuce, carrots, beetroot, eggplant, rockmelons, corn and parsley. The Men’s Shed even harvests their parsley and donates it to local charity Manna to use in their kitchen! Victoria Park Men’s Shed Kensington PCYC 51 Anketell St, Kensington Open Monday and Thursday 9am - 12noon For further information, contact Jack Beere on 9356 6953, 0427 612 604 (mobile) or email jackbeere@bigpond.com.au

Victoria Park Digital Hub Since the doors opened at the Digital Hub, it has been visited by over 4000 residents all eager to engage with new technology and learn the basics of computers. The startup funding expired as of February 2015 and after assessing the benefits and impact of having a Digital Hub in the Town of Victoria Park, Councilors voted unanimously to continue the service permanently. This means the Hub is still open for business and offers free one-to-one training to any residents of the Town of Victoria Park who are up for the challenge. Training takes place in a beautifully appointed modern setting where visitors will be helped by one of the Hub’s friendly volunteers. They can help with any aspect of new (and old) technology; social media, email, internet, banking, online transactions, cyber security, and online job applications are just a taste of the things you can learn with them. You can contact the Digital Hub on 9329 4238 or visit victoriapark.wa.gov.au for further information.

Art in the Park The Town of Victoria Park has a hugely creative year ahead with the launch of several pieces of public artwork over the next 12 months, including six pieces in suburban parks and four key, large‑scale projects around the Town.

Concept by Abdul-Rahman Abdullah

These and other projects will be the culmination of the Town’s Public Master Art Plan 2013-2015, and aim to reflect the Town’s identity as a unique and vibrant local government. The first of the suburban artwork pieces has been installed, with artist Ayad Alqaragholli’s sculpture Hyatti taking pride of place in Duncan Reserve, Victoria Park. The other suburban artworks due to be installed over the next six

months, and unveiled throughout the year, will be located at: • Corner of Marquis Street and Hayman Road, Bentley • Corner of Raleigh Street and Archer Street, Carlisle • Rotary Park, St James • Shepperton Road (Canning Highway on-ramp), Burswood • Kate Street Reserve, East Victoria Park Damian Butler’s Lunar Movement (shown above) is first of the four large-scale projects to be installed, located at Lathlain Place and recently unveiled at the Light Up Lathlain event. The three other major projects will be located at G.O. Edwards Park, by the Causeway and Read Park.

An innovative initiative coming in 2015 is the installation of Public Outdoor Ping‑Pong (POPP) tables featuring decorative designs by selected Western Australian artists in five parks around the Town. The Town has identified POPP as a creative way to promote physical activity, artwork and space activation within the one initiative. POPP tables will be available to play at Houghton Park, Rayment Park, John Bissett Reserve, Hawthorne Park and John MacMillan Park in June this year.

Acting CEO Anthony Vuleta speaking at the Civic and Citizens Workshop

Civic and Citizens Workshop During May the Office of Multicultural Interests in partnership with the Constitutional Centre of WA, Electoral Education Centre and Australia Day WA ran civics and citizenship workshops for representatives of culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) community organisations. The workshops were designed to raise awareness about Australia’s political system, citizens’ rights and responsibilities, and how to be involved in government decision‑making. The Town’s Acting CEO, Anthony Vuleta, attended the 6 May workshop as a guest speaker to discuss local government challenges and successes and participation by community members. “Building trust and participation through citizenship is fundamental to the development of our dynamic State,” Mr Vuleta said. “The development of an active sense of citizenship in people with diverse backgrounds can lead to positive outcomes in social, cultural and economic returns.”

Reconciliation Works Keep an eye out for a range of engaging posters displayed throughout the Town. The Town of Victoria Park’s Aboriginal Engagement Strategy (AES) Group together with community organisation “I am the Other”, have planned a special celebration for Reconciliation Week (27 May - 3 June) and NAIDOC Week (5 - 12 July) in 2015. The project features portrait photographs

of Aboriginal and non‑Aboriginal partners across the community, proclaiming their shared belief in reconciliation. The inspirational photographs will be displayed as posters throughout the Town of Victoria Park from the 27 May - 12 July 2015, and feature a joint statement in support of reconciliation. Mayor Trevor Vaughan said “I am happy to be part of a project that profiles the many positive and significant qualities reconciliation makes between people, and how with respect and collaboration, we all share equally in the benefits that it brings.”

Founding Members of “I am the Other”: Kelsi Forrest, Akram Azimi (Young Australian of the Year 2013) and Dylan Collard.
