Message from the Mayor Exciting things have been happening over the past couple of months with the Lathlain Precinct Redevelopment Project picking up some pace. Zone Three of the project – the West Coast Eagles Zone has seen His Worship the Mayor some positive developments, Trevor Vaughan with the town planning process P: 9311 8155 now well underway for M: 0447 374 528 tvaughan@vicpark.wa.gov.au transforming Lathlain Park into a state-of-the-art training and administration facility for the West Coast Eagles and Perth Football Club. Find more information about this on page five. While traditionally, outdoor activities and events ease off during the winter period, we still have some wonderful things happening in and around the community for you to be involved in. Make sure you

don’t shut yourself in and hibernate all winter – it’s really important to stay active in the community, both physically and mentally. We have recently installed some ‘Little Free Libraries’ around the Town. These are specially-crafted, wooden boxes that have been stocked with free books. Take a walk around the neighbourhood and find your closest one, feel free to borrow a book, and return it, or replace it with another. It’s a great reason to take a stroll around and maybe meet some neighbours. For a list of locations visit victoriapark.wa.gov.au or call us on 9311 8111. Enjoy the winter and stay warm!

Mayor Trevor Vaughan

Who’s in your town?

Volunteer Task Force CEO, Kath Snell

Volunteer Task Force Volunteer Task Force (VTF) provides assistance to the elderly, and people living with a disability with a range of everyday tasks – focusing on building independence, creating community and providing social interaction. The organisation has more than 400 volunteers engaging annually and approximately 120 paid staff who deliver services throughout the Perth region from their headquarters in Carlisle. Key services provided include: • transport • gardening • home and outdoor maintenance • household activities – including cleaning and domestic support • social support including outings, shopping and companion service. Something else the team provide is the Water Wise gardening program where volunteers and staff work to remodel gardens using sustainability principles and plants suited to Perth’s climate, leaving clients with a lower maintenance, attractive and sustainable garden to be proud of. One of the many success stories to come from the organisation is that of CEO Kath Snell – who is celebrating 10 years with VTF. Kath joined as a volunteer in 2006 after emigrating from the UK, and accepted a paid role later that year. She rose through the ranks and now heads the organisation as the Chief Executive Officer. “I am delighted and honoured to be leading Volunteer Task Force in the next exciting stage of our journey. It has always been the positive, generous attitude of the workforce, both staff and volunteers to support clients in their choice to live independently, that has kept me interested and inspired,” said Kath. “The culture of flexibility, encouragement and professionalism makes for a successful, innovative and growing organisation.” Contacts: 9318 5700 | info@volunteertaskforce.org.au | volunteertaskforce.org.au

Perth Stadium Update Construction of the Perth Stadium and sports precinct is over 40% complete with less than two years to go until the gates officially open for the start of the 2018 AFL season. Ground works in the sports precinct have commenced in preparation of planting the first tree in the middle of this year. A peak workforce of over 1,000 people is expected in mid-2016 and a total of 5,800 workers will be involved across the three-year construction period. The construction program will soon turn its focus to fitting out the internal areas of the stadium. The development of the premium product areas will commence later in 2016 with the team facilities and catering areas to commence in early 2017. Piling for the Swan River pedestrian bridge is almost complete on both the Burswood Peninsula side and East Perth landings. Spanning 370m across the Swan River, the bridge will provide year round access for the community and is expected to be open in early 2017. @newPerthStadium @newPerthStadium perthstadium.com.au

Armadale Train Line Shutdown 1 – 9 July Plan ahead As part of the construction works for the new six-platform Perth Stadium Station, a nine-day closure of the Armadale train line will be required in July. The shutdown will take place from the evening of Friday, 1 July through to the last service on Saturday, 9 July 2016. During the shutdown, all Armadale line passengers will be affected. Train replacement buses will operate to most stations, however travel times will take longer than usual so Transperth is encouraging passengers to plan ahead and allow at least 45 minutes extra travel time for your journey, and where you can, try walking, cycling or carpooling to work. Residents of the Town should be aware that during the shutdown, there will be increased bus activity in the area. Route maps are available at transperth.wa.gov.au. To find out how your journey will be impacted by the shutdown and to plan ahead, visit transperth.wa.gov.au or call the Transperth InfoLine on 13 62 13.

Park Life Projects Lighting upgrades at Fraser Park The Town is upgrading the sports lighting at Fraser Park. Lights will be installed on three separate circuits, minimising the time the reserve needs to be fully lit, reducing electricity usage. Expected start date – July 2016.

McCallum Park basketball courts lighting installation After being approached by court users requesting lights to be installed, the Town undertook a very thorough community consultation in late 2015, showing majority support for the project. The lights will be designed so that they will have a nominated daily shut off time. Expected start date – July 2016.

Whole of Town tree audit Arborists will be auditing all trees within the Town’s boundaries to update our tree database; identifying the species, checking for any problems and recommending any works needing to be done. Staff will be able to use the results for a number of purposes including identifying future planting opportunities. For further information call the Park Life team on 9311 8111.

Lathlain Precinct Update Exciting things are happening in Lathlain! The Lathlain Precinct Redevelopment Project consists of eight development zones, which will transform Lathlain into a vibrant community sports and recreation hub. This development has been underway for a few years now, with some zones already complete. The redevelopment of Lathlain Park is made up of Zones 1, 2 and 3: Zone 1 – Perth Football Club Zone Zone 2 – Community Activity Zone Zone 3 – West Coast Eagles Zone Development in these three zones is moving along quickly, with the town planning process well underway. There are some opportunities for the public to be involved in this planning process, and contribute to how Lathlain Park is developed. If you want to be involved make sure you visit lathlainprecinct.com.au or call the Town on 9311 8111.

KidSport in the Community KidSport is a State Government program which provides eligible families with financial assistance for children’s sport and recreation club fees. The program allows families to receive up to $200 annually for each child aged between five to 18 years. KidSport has been running in the Town for several years now, and local clubs have really benefited. One such group is Moorditj Keila, who run outreach programs in the community, including an Aboriginal youth basketball club who play at the Leisurelife Centre. The club has grown from two teams to seven over the past few years, with a high proportion of Indigenous kids involved, and returning year after year – something the club says would not have been possible without the assistance that KidSport provides to families. For further information on KidSport or for an application form phone 9311 8114 or email admin@victoriapark.wa.gov.au or visit our website victoriapark.wa.gov.au.

Parks and Reserve Hire The Town has many beautiful parks and reserves for the community to use for a wide range of events and activities. This includes the stunning McCallum Park and Taylor Reserve on the Swan River Foreshore, which are ideal for large and small-scale events. The Town has recently hosted some high-quality, large-scale events including; • The Perth Garden Festival • Perth 4WD and Adventure Show • Circus Joseph Ashton – Big Top Tease. Smaller parks and reserves around Town are perfect for community groups or family gatherings, and G.O. Edwards Park in Burswood is a stunning location for a wedding! For more information about booking our parks and reserves for your event call the Clubs, Bookings and Events Officer on 9311 8111 or visit our website.

Community Safety Tips Reporting issues in the community

Evolve Update

The Evolve public participation period has been extended to October due to the overwhelming response we have had to the project! We want to make sure we are listening to everyone, and capturing feedback in a meaningful way so will be taking a few extra months to do so. Rest assured it’s not too late to be involved if you haven’t already signed up. There are still opportunities to participate in a few different ways, so visit yourthoughts.victoriapark.wa.gov.au to find out how to be involved.

The organisations that are responsible for infrastructure maintenance around town need help from the community to report when something has gone wrong. When the community is active at communicating with these organisations the infrastructure is maintained at a higher standard and problems are solved faster. You can help keep your neighbourhood maintained to a high standard by reporting any issues you see to the appropriate organisation. The Town produced a ‘Who to Call?’ flyer that lists major stakeholders in the Town and their contact details. If you would like a hard copy of this flyer, pick one up from the Admin Centre, Library or Leisure Centres or call 9311 8111 or visit the Safer Neighbourhoods section of our website.
