Message from the Mayor Hello everyone. You may have noticed that this winter edition of Life in the Park is out a month earlier than usual. His Worship the Mayor Trevor Vaughan P: 9311 8155 M: 0447 374 528

If you have been following what’s been happening with Local Government reform, you will see that we have been asked to provide a possible name for the new local government entity that will be comprised of the Town of Victoria Park and City of South Perth. Due to the limited amount of time we have to provide the name to the State Government, we are taking the opportunity to use Life in the Park to ask you the very important question‌

Although Local Government reform is ramping up, the Town of Victoria Park is still focused on delivering the best possible services to our community. We will be trying our absolute best to work through reform while keeping our community involved and informed, and making sure that your needs are met. If you feel unsure about what is happening, or would just like to have a chat about it, please feel free to get in touch with myself or your local Councillor. We are always here for you if you want to discuss anything happening in the community. Please stay warm and safe this winter, and keep an eye out for updates from the Town on what is happening over the coming months.

What do you think our new City should be called? We want our two communities to have input into the name of the new City. We have come up with some options, but want to hear what you think. See page 5 and 6 for more information.

OUR NEW

... The Town of Victoria Park and the City of South Perth are working together to form a new local government, operating from 1 July 2015. The Mayors of the City and the Town are inviting suggestions from members of both communities for a name for the proposed new city.

Town of Victoria Park Mayor, Trevor Vaughan encourages all community members, young and old to provide input.

A list of suggested names has been put together by community representatives from key stakeholder groups and these have been discussed by elected members of both local governments.

“The Town of Victoria Park and City of South Perth are strong and proud communities, with a great sense of community spirit, and we are moving forward together to become one community. Coming up with a new name is an important first step in what will become our shared history and our new future,” said Mayor Vaughan.

The name is required to be submitted to the Local Government Advisory Board (LGAB) by June 2014. City of South Perth Mayor Sue Doherty said developing a name for the future city offers an opportunity for members of the two communities to define an identity for the new local government area. “This is a unique chance for our communities to come up with their ideas and suggestions for a name for a new city – an opportunity which is as unique as the new name.”

“Four names have already been identified as options, however we are open to suggestions and want to hear from as many people as possible across our collective communities.”

The suggested names will be presented to both Councils prior to being submitted to the LGAB by June 2014. To cast your vote or make a suggestion head to www.victoriapark.wa.gov.au/reform/our-new-city or you can cut out the form located here and post it or drop it into the Town. Make sure it makes it to us by Friday, 16 May 2014.

The new local government holds a prominent position on the Swan and Canning Rivers. • Curtin – John Curtin was the 14th Prime Minister of Australia. Curtin University is wholly located within the proposed new City. • Twin Rivers – With over 20 kilometres of river frontage, the new local government is located on the convergence of the Swan and Canning Rivers. • South Bank – The border of the new local government expands along the south bank of the Swan River. Sir James Mitchell Park and McCallum Park extend along the foreshore and provide a perfect recreational area for all West Australians.
