NEWSLETTER | 17.08.2018

Hello from Bec I've noticed that every week when I sit down to write this editorial I automatically want to start it with "Things have been busy here at TW HQ" because it feels like there is always something on the go.

* nursing students to visit indonesia * social butterfly winner * major prize winner * new blog from sarah *Â twpc * hillbilly goats * shop the marketplace * upcoming events in nq *community & fundraisers

However, I've just wandered around the kitchen looking for snacks while making a cup of coffee, staring out the window, and checking Facebook for the 100th time this hour - I don't think I'm actually that 'busy' after all? I have a case of 'Shiny-Thing-Itis' or as my Dad calls it, 'Distractamosis' - this means that I jump from project to project, it takes me 3 hours to answer an email and I'm starting this newsletter yesterday to ensure it is sent out today... Hands up who else can relate? Til next week, Bec xox

Bec Townsend is the Jill-of-all-Trades here at Townsville Women. You can contact her at bec@townsvillewomen.com

Who are we? Townsville Women was founded by Bec Townsend - an unknown with zero experience but oodles of passion. After going on Maternity Leave and realising she didn't have a support network, she set about creating one! That was in 2015. Now here we are over 3 years later and Bec continues to share her passion, and now her network, with thousands of followers every week! There are regular social networking events that nurture and create new friendships between women who otherwise may be feeling isolated or unable to meet new people easily. Recently the Townsville Women behind-the-scenes team of one (Bec) grew to two, with Tracey Bannerman coming on to help manage our Social Media presence.

"We will be doing health checkups, home visits for those that are too ill and health promotion workshops in communities and school." Rural areas of Indonesia lack access to basic hygiene and sanitation resources including oral health, soap for hand washing and feminine hygiene. As a group they have decided to fundraise and reach out to the community to raise funds to create hygiene packs containing toothpaste, toothbrushes and soap. They are also ordering some female hygiene packs from 'Days for Girls', where they need to pay back the cost of materials used. A GoFundMe page has been set up to collect donations and they are asking for help from the local community.

I can feel the heat rise up from beneath my collar. My eyes avert any and all attention. And my cheeks become heavily rouged. It’s official. I’m a grown adult and I suck at receiving compliments in a gracious manner. I wish I was better equipped. As it is, I naturally pause, mumble through a thank you of some description, deflect, insert self-deprecating humour technique and quickly move on.

Townsville Writers and Publishers Centre Jill Staunton is a member of the Townsville Writers and Publishers Centre. Last year she served as the centre’s secretary and this year she assists the centre as an ordinary board member. Jill is active on behalf of the TWPC and attends Popular Fiction, Verb and board meetings each month. The Popular Fiction group caters to local writers who enjoy the genres of romance, crime, mystery, thriller and suspense whereas Verb is a literary group aimed at teaching the craft of writing. Every three months, Jill presents the poetry element of the Verb meetings. This year, Jill prepared and delivered the inaugural Scribblerz Workshop for eight to twelve-year old children. The workshop, held at James Cook University in January, was well attended. The participants were taught how to write a narrative and a selection of their stories was published in the first Scribblerz Anthology much to the delight of the young authors. In July, a second workshop was held at the Aitkenvale library and focussed on micro-fiction. The children had their 50 – 80 word stories published on cushion covers and were thrilled with the outcome of the workshop. The TWPC is a not-for-profit organisation which provides a wide range of opportunities for Townsville residents who love writing, want to work towards publication or just want to enjoy learning about writing. Whatever their genre, be it SpecFic or KidsLit, they will find a like-minded group of writers at the TWPC who are keen to workshop the craft of writing and welcome new members.
