Tree farms part of Christmas traditions By Mark Dionne Town Times

While the families wandering around Durham and Middlefield tree farms are no comparison to the massive crowds in big box stores and malls, the Friday and weekend after Thanksgiving is a busy time for local Christmas tree sellers. The Friday after Thanksgiving – Black Friday to large

retailers – is the first day to sell Christmas trees for some local businesses. Maplewood Farm, Miller Tree Farm, the Herzig Family Tree Farm and the Dumas Christmas Tree Farm all opened on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Some of the businesses and stands that sell trees, like JC Farm & Greenhouses, Country See Trees / Page 5

economic growth. A little bit of inflation is generally seen as a positive economic sign as it signals that demand is growing at a rate just slightly faster than that of overall supply. The “inflation rate” covers much ground The most common inflation measure we hear reported in the media is the government’s Consumer Price Index (CPI). It measures the average change in the cost of prices paid by urban consumers See Jolly / Page 18

Wine and roses are wonderful gifts, however, Connecticut Better Business is alerting consumers that they can be very costly if they are delivered by an imposter. According to one consumer’s account, her trouble began with a phone call from a man who said he worked for “Express Couriers,” and asked to arrange a time to deliver a package that required a signature. Within one hour from the telephone call, the caller showed up at her door wearing what looked like a le-

gitimate delivery company uniform and holding a gift basket containing flowers and wine. There was no accompanying card nor information on the identity of the sender. The imposter then said there was a $3.50 “delivery/ verification” charge because the basket contained liquor. The fee was supposedly required to prove that the package was received by an adult of drinking age, instead of being left outside where a minor would have access to it. See Packages / Page 19

Traditions have to start somewhere, as demonstrated by Annabelle’s ride in a tree cart. Annabelle, who recently moved from Texas, is spending her first Christmas in Connecticut. | Photos by Mark Dionne / Town Times

Trees From Page 1

Flower Farms, and Uncle Bob’s, have already had cut trees out, but saw more activity after Turkey Day. Picking out a tree on the first weekend after Thanksgiving is also a tradition for many families. Despite a drizzly Saturday, the acres of trees saw a good number of visitors, including many from out of town. Seth Miller, third-generation owner of Miller Tree Farm in Durham, said he is used to repeat visitors. “In my own time I’ve seen three and four generations come. My Dad used to say, ‘You’re not selling a tree, you’re selling a tradition,’ Miller said. Miller said he has even seen people return to the same part of the field each year. Jackie Nunes of Ivoryton has been getting a tree with her family from the Herzig Tree Farm for about 12 years.

Jackie Nunes and her son Braeden combine their strength to move a cut tree at the Herzig Family Farm.

The family looks for the biggest tree it can handle, so getting it home and into a stand becomes a family affair with three generations involved. Some families are more efficient. Mike and Anastasia Pych of Durham have been going to the same tree farm for 10 years and said that they always find a tree within 15 minutes. With two daughters and a Christmas tree in tow on Sunday, they succeeded again this year. Some families spend much more time picking out a tree, meaning it is not unusual to see less particular – or more tired – family members taking a break from the hunt at tree farms on benches, near fire pits, or back at the car. The scene will repeat with different families as local sellers remain open until Christmas. “People just come because they know we’re going to be here, Miller said.

window’s decoration, which changes every year, and workers take a couple of days to create the scene, but, said Paula, “Everything goes through Carolyn first.” That would be Carolyn Adams, the 90-year-old owner of the store, who approves each window display. Adams said, “We do it a little different every year ... last year it was Santa’s toy shop. This

year it’s an outdoor theme.” Some elements of the window have become traditions themselves, including the moving Santa, who has been in every window scene since 1980. “He’s had two or three suits and two or three motors, but he keeps moving,” Adams said. The other moving pieces, a pair of elves and bears, are also fixtures that Adams can date by their repairs. The elves go back about 20 years and have

been through a couple of motors. The bears, the youngest of the moving pieces, are still on their first motors. One other constant of the Christmas displays actually predates the window tradition by decades and has a connection to the Adams family. A lady’s winter sleigh made in 1897 by Irving Little, Carolyn Adams’ great-uncle, is featured in every Christmas window. “He was a famous sleigh maker in New Hampshire,” Adams said of her relative from Colebrook, New Hampshire. Sometimes she sees other Little sleighs up for auction but she only has one. “I only need one,” said Adams. “The original velvet is there. I take very good care of it.” The sleigh was originally made for Adams’ grandfather’s neighbor, but this year it’s being driven by two bears. The window scene has become a tradition for costumers of the Main Street store. Adams said she is used to seeing parents bring their kids for a look and then years later seeing those children bringing the parents. This year, one of those kids who grew up looking in the window helped create it. Joe Boris of Durham helped put the scene together. According to Adams, Boris, like many kids, always “knew Christmas was coming because Santa was in the window.” The store does not stick to a strict schedule about when to break down the display after Christmas, but does keep the sleigh, Santa, the elves, and the bears in careful storage. After all, they are expected back next year.

Opinion Letters to the Editor Authorize the connection To the editor: I have read the proposed Ground Water Ordinance that will be voted on Dec. 14, at 8 p.m. I have also read the Federal Statute regarding environmental “remedial action” in such situations. I have read the relevant agreement between the state and federal governments. This consent agreement makes reference to a settlement between Durham Manufacturing and the EPA. These documents work together in a manner which is fair to us in the GMZ and benefits the town. This plume is a blight on our town. It is interesting, that in a little town like Durham, we can no longer live like self-sufficient “Yankees.” We are being asked to save the town from further infestation. I understand that we did not cause this problem. However, it is here. We can arguably stop its further expansion. I believe that the benefit of clean water is enough payback to us. We should vote in favor of the ordinance and authorize the connection in the future. Bruce Chaplin Durham

Honoring Brenna’s memory To th editor: My family is collecting crafts and small toys again this year at the Durham Tree Lighting on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 4 p.m. As many know, we do this to honor our daughter and sister, Brenna (a.k.a. Bean), who died on Dec. 22, 2012 at the age of 5 after fighting a valiant battle against leukemia. We donate these crafts and toys to The Smilow Cancer Hospital, where they have created “Bean’s Craft Corner” to keep kids busy during their chemo treatments. We are asking for our community’s support to

keep Brenna’s memory alive by helping children who are battling cancer. Please bring an unwrapped craft item or toy to the Durham town green this Saturday. You can also drop crafts off at our home at 500 Powder Hill Road, Durham or send one in to Strong school where they are also collecting. The Brenna Zettergren Memorial Foundation, Inc. is now a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Because of generous and loving donations, we are able to give a scholarship each year to a graduating CRHS senior and help fund events that make our towns such a special community. It feels good to help others at this time of year but you are also helping our family by remembering Brenna, and we are eternally grateful for that love and support. Kevin, Jen, Bailey, Maura and Avery Zettergren

It’s cold season To the editor: A friendly reminder to families this winter to please stay vigilant in avoiding the spread of colds. As many of you who have children in school know, the common cold is not only common but perpetual this year; the first cold to circulate beginning the second week of September. The common cold that simply requires tissues and an early bedtime for most students often results in days of nebulizer treatments, steroid medicines, and ER visits for many children who have asthma. These necessary medications help sufferers breathe, but have side effects both short and long term. Keeping a child home from school who is infected with a cold or virus may seem inconvenient, but rest is the best medicine and helps prevent the perpetual circulation of illness to everyone else. Being proac-

Grateful for the small stuff, too

It’s Thanksgiving morning as I write this, and I am looking forward to a day of fine food and even finer friends. And of course I will be wearing my stretchy pants, in order to accommodate the expanding waistline that most surely will be a part of the day. But first I thought I would take a few moments to do what the name of the day urges us to do – give thanks (which I’d like to do every tive about a simple cold may other day, too, but somehelp avoid more absences times I forget). for individuals and the stuOh, it’s easy to be grateful dent body alike. for the big stuff, the obvious Also, a note to teachstuff – family, friends, home ers, particularly in the high and hearth, cupboards school and middle school, to brimming with food. well. A quick assessment of the situation told me that when I pulled the car forward there would be a rather impressive scratch on my beloved Honda Civic. That did occur. Oh, but there’s good news. I just happened to have a bumper sticker that covered the scratch perfectly. It says “Angels believe in me.” (I like to think they believe in me even when I am having my little driving mishaps.) I think it would be wise to always have an array of bumper stickers on hand. I am always grateful when those big black ants, which show up faithfully every spring, finally leave. These are not the tiny picnic-variety ants. No, they are monstrous, and they put terror in my heart. At the back of my mind sits the fear that they are of the house-munching type, and I worry that my 980 square feet will be reduced to 287 square feet. But neighbors have told me that they have had the same little beasties in their house, and were told by exterminators that they were harmless. Still, I can’t leave my supper on the counter for even the blink of an eye, as they will run off with it. They are piggish things. But after a few weeks of our cohabitation, they vanish as quickly as they had come. I don’t know where they go, and I don’t care. It’s just so good to have my house back See Carr / Page 11

again. This could just be me, but I think walking barefoot in autumn’s leaves is such a delight. I love the sound of them crunching beneath my feet. I love how it feels to be buried ankle-deep in them. I use this particular delight as an excuse to not rake my yard. I love that I have Caller ID, and that I need never take another call from a telemarketer. I know I pick on this group a lot, and I would apologize, but I’m pretty sure I’m going to do it again. I love the way I feel so invigorated by a walk on a cold winter day. The frigid air really puts the giddy-up in my step. And when I reach home I like to thaw my bones out with a hot cup of tea. Add a good book to the mix, and I have found my own piece of heaven. I am thankful for the kindness that lives in my boys. A case in point. On my recent visit to my younger son, in North Carolina, we’d gone to the dump (they may be called recycling centers now; I can never keep up with social proprieties) and Jordan, after getting rid of his trash, was just pulling out when he saw an elderly couple having trouble lifting

their trash cans. Without a moment’s hesitation he jumped out and lent them a hand. Kindness is not just second nature to him, it’s first nature. I couldn’t help it – I teared up. Seeing the innate goodness in my offspring always tugs at my heart. My days are filled with so many treasures, both large and small. Getting that perfect parking spot. An exceptional sunset. The feel of the air after a good rain. When we have a thunderstorm and the power stays on. Watching a sitcom that I think is so funny, I am laughing out loud, with tears streaming down my face. The smile of a stranger. People holding doors for me. The way my kitties love to cuddle. Coconut Bliss vegan ice cream. Thick, fuzzy bathrobes. Trying out a new recipe and it actually comes out right. Skyping with my Swedish grandson and he says, in perfect English, “I love you, Grandma.” (That one’s the best.) I must say, life is good. And now my stretchy pants and I are heading out. I hope you all had a spectacular Thanksgiving. Diana Carr, a resident of Durham, is a certified life coach who was trained by Martha Beck. Sports Blue Devils finish season with strong effort Coginchaug lays smackdown on Gilbert in finale

for touchdowns of 53 and 35 yards. Following an interception by Dean Splendorio, Parker Tregoning broke off a 35-yard rushing score to complete Coginchaug’s scoring. Benjunas finished the contest with 322 passing yards, a season high, while John Lombardo added four extra points. Featuring a new 3-5 defensive front, the Blue Devils were a force to be reckoned with all contest. Apart from Splendorio’s interception, Powers recorded two interceptions, and Michael Cross

(nine tackles), Salva (eight) Stanzel (five) and Evan Slawinowski (four) actively made plays throughout the game. The Blue Devils looked polished throughout the matchup, especially the seniors – Powers, Cross, Stanzel, Kyle and Tyler Degennaro, Benjunas, Salva, Tregoning, Slawinowski, Steven Phenicie, Gunther Wallach, Andrew Light and Chris Dekoeyer – who took part in their final football game sporting a Coginchaug uniform. — Submitted by the Coginchaug Football Club

The Coginchaug Blue Devils traveled to the northwest corner of the state to take on the Gilbert/Northwestern Yellow Jackets in the team’s season finale. Coming off a tumultuous set of weeks which saw the coaching staff quit on the team leaving only a volunteer coach, the school administration was able to put together an interim staff so the players could finish the season on Thanksgiving. The staff consisted of David DeRita, Steve Croce, Steven Prajer, Tony Calcagni and Doug Frasier. The result consisted of the Blue Devils ending their season on top, 49-21. After receiving the opening kickoff, Coginchaug’s offense featured a new look with the spread and double wing offense. It only took three plays for the change to pay dividends, as the Blue Devils scored on a 42-yard pass from quarterback Wes Benjunas to Cam Powers to go up 6-0. Despite falling behind 7-6 following a Yellow Jackets score on their first possession of the game, Gilbert’s only lead of the day didn’t last very long. Connor Salva returned the ensuing kickoff for a 73-yard touchdown. A two-point conversion pass to Justin Faiella gave the Devils a 14-7 lead. Before the half was over, Coginchaug’s defense had recorded two turnovers that the offense converted into two scores: a four-yard score for Powers on the ground, and a 55-yard touchdown catch and run for Powers on a screen pass, giving the Blue Devils a 29-15 lead at the break. The second half saw more of the same strong passing game that helped Coginchaug thrive in the first 24 minutes of play, as Benjunas connected with Eric Stanzel

Cam Powers looks for running room during Coginchaug’s final game of the 2015 season. The seniors, Powers included, ended on a high note, besting Gilbert 49-21.

The consumer wanted to pay with cash, but the delivery man said he could only accept payment by credit card. The courier swiped the credit card on a mobile terminal and asked that the consumer enter the card’s personal identification number (PIN), and then handed her a receipt for the payment. Over the course of five days, $4,000 was withdrawn from her bank account at several ATMs or charged to the card. It turns out that the criminal used the mobile pin pad to copy the card. The victim promptly called her bank, which closed the debit/credit account and issued a new card. When she called the local police department, they told her that a number of people in other local households had fallen victim to the same scam. Connecticut Better Business Bureau has advice for consumers to protect themselves from similar fraud: Who sent it? - Be wary of any “surprise” gifts or packages, especially if you did not order or expect them. Don’t accept any delivery unless the package identifies the sender or if it comes from someone you don’t know. A delivery fee is a red flag - Delivery companies do not require payment of fees as a condition of delivery. Be stingy with informa-

tion - As a general rule, you should never give out financial or personal information to anyone over the telephone, online or at the front door unless you initiated the transaction. State Briefs Deficit negotiators scrap state worker retirement incentive HARTFORD — Connecticut lawmakers say they’ve abandoned a proposal to offer certain state employees a financial incentive to retire. New estimates showed the plan would not save as much money as some legislators had hoped. Also, there were concerns the program could worsen the state’s pension liability problems. Despite scrapping the idea,

Democratic and Republican leaders agreed Tuesday they will find the $350 million in savings needed to close the shortfall in the current $20 billion state budget, and also make tax changes and restore state funding to hospitals. Legislative leaders met privately for several hours with Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy. More talks were planned Wednesday. Connecticut paves 25 more miles of road in 2015 than in 2014 HARTFORD — State officials say crews have resurfaced 330 miles of two-lane roads in Connecticut this year, the most the state has repaved in the last decade. The Connecticut Post reports Gov. Dannel Malloy said on Monday that the state’s resurfacing total exceeded last year’s mileage by 25 miles and is nearly 90 more miles than 2013. Officials say the additional mileage can be attributed to the state’s additional $5.7 million investment into the road program. Connecticut spent $74.6 million resurfacing roads this year compared to last year’s cost of $68.9 million for 304 miles of two-lane roads. Malloy says state officials are committed to maintaining and upgrading infrastructure to “continue driving growth, See State / Page 21

Rallies on Syrian refugee policy held HARTFORD — Opponents and supporters of plans to accept Syrian refugees into the United States held dueling but peaceful rallies in Hartford. Supporters gathered Saturday at the state Capitol, gave speeches and held signs, including ones saying “Fight racism, Islamophobia and imperalism!” Opponents gathered near the Capitol before a planned march to the Governor’s Residence. State Capitol police say both events were peaceful. Matthew Oakes, a spokesman for the group in favor of accepting Syrian refugees, cited a responsibility to support people fleeing the Islamic State group. Angelia Balch, an organizer of the “Say ‘No’ to Syrian Refugees” rally, told the Journal Inquirer that she’s upset at Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s support of refugees and wants a federal law requiring the Homeland Security Department to get approval from Congress before accepting refugees. — Associated Press
