Durham confronts aging culverts
‘KINDNESS ROCKS’: AN UPBEAT NEW ELEMENT AT THE FAIR
By Bailey Wright Town Times
In a Tuesday, Nov. 6 referendum, residents will vote on whether to appropriate more than $2 million by general obligation bond for road culvert replacement work in Durham. In a special town meeting Monday, voters approved a motion to set the date and time for the referendum, after discussing the resolution for the road culvert replacement work associated with Indian Lane, Bear Rock Road, Haddam Quarter Road, Seward Road and Cream Pot Road and pavement work in the Dinatale subdivision. “These are projects that need to be done. If it's not funded in this fashion, it will be funded some other way, but these particular culverts need to be done,” First Selectman Laura Francis said at the meeting.

The Art Department at the Durham Fair has scheduled a new contest, “Kindness Rocks.”

Replacement of these culverts was first deemed necessary about eight years ago, said Public Works Road Foreman John Jenkins. During last year’s budget process, the Board of Finance, along with the Board
of Selectmen, determined that financing through general obligation bonds would be most effective. Bonding would not exceed the amount of $2.1 million. Francis said that all the culverts included in the resolution are made of some kind of corrugated metal and are exceeding their life expectancy, as some are decades old. Each will be replaced with twin precast box culverts, except in Seward Road, where current twin asphalt corrugated metal pipes will be replaced with twin plastic pipes. The Indian Lane road culvert replacement will be eligible to apply for the Connecticut Local Bridge Program, which would reimburse the town 50 percent of that project. All the roads are still passable, according to Jenkins. However, several are utilizing road plates to help stabilize them. The Dinatale subdivision will be a full-depth reclaim pavement project, which will put it back in the shape it was when brand new, JenkSee Culverts, A9

Durham resident dishing out sweet creations By Ashley Kus Record-Journal staff
WALLINGFORD – A month after opening Keri’s Sweet Creations on East Center Street, pastry chef and coowner Keri Logan-Ber has gotten a lot of requests for cheesecake on a stick. “People seem to really enjoy it and like it because it’s different,” Logan-Ber said. “It’s not too sweet, and you get the soft on the inside and the crunch on the outside.” A graduate of Johnson and Wales University, Logan-Ber was previously a head baker at Yale University. While she was used to creating plated desserts, the Middletown resident decided to test different to-go and miniature dessert
concepts in her new shop, located in the former Fran’s Bakery storefront in a plaza at 824 East Center St. The unique dessert came about after Logan-Ber realized how decadent her cheesecake recipe was frozen. Cheesecake is divided into slices, made into a lollipop with a stick, frozen for a few hours and then dipped into melted chocolate and decorated with an assortment of treats. Crumbled toffee, toasted coconut, peanut butter, white chocolate raspberry and almonds are just a few of the variations available. The dessert can also be scaled down to a smaller size for parties.

Logan-Ber said the bakery made over 60 desserts within a span of three days due to high demand. “Cheesecake on a stick I think it is going to be our claim to fame,” said co-own-

My own son, a snake-lover I just got off the phone with my older son, who, with great enthusiasm, was telling me about his new pet snake. I fear a DNA test is in order, as I cannot wrap my mind around the fact that any offspring of mine would get one of these critters, on purpose. I am beyond terrified of snakes. I can’t even look at a picture of one, or see one on TV, without having to breathe into a paper bag, due to a case of hyperventilation. And it’s not just Ryan. My younger son, some years ago, had two of these slithering creatures. Two! I would think one would be more
than enough. At the time he lived in a small home, so when I visited him those snakes and I were never very far away from each other. Before I booked my flight, I would nag Jordan relentlessly to make sure the darn things could not get out of their tanks. He assured me that they could not, that there were just piles and piles of
stuff on the lids, which would ensure I would see neither hide nor hair of them. So I would go, because I love my boy that much. And I would spend the entire visit pretty much on pins and needles. Especially at night. I had horrible visions of them sneaking out of their abodes and paying me a visit while I was sleeping. I would stuff towels under the door of my bedroom, just in case the beasts decided to go for a midnight romp. Oh yes, and let’s not forget the two weeks of nightmares I had before leaving home.
One year when I was getting ready to make my plane reservation, Jordan told me that his snake (one had left this earthly realm; I did not mourn his passing) had gotten out (aha! I knew my fears were well-grounded!), and that he hadn’t found it, but not to worry. I should still come down because it was probably long gone. Well, that was not a convincing argument for me. I told him in no uncertain terms that I would not be booking a flight until he had found it and put it back in its tank. About two weeks later he found it in his home, but when he tried to grab it, it bit him and got away. No plane reservation yet, my boy! He did catch it soon after that, and I did go down, but not after wailing and ranting about how scared I always was during my visits. And dear boy that he is, he had
his neighbor keep it while I was there. But seriously, I cannot for the life of me see the draw. A snake is most certainly not an affectionate and cuddly creature. (And I don’t consider it cuddling should one decide to wrap itself around one’s neck. And then squeeze.) It doesn’t run to the door to greet you when you come home from work. It doesn’t snuggle with you when you sleep. It doesn’t snuggle with you when you’re watching TV. It simply does not snuggle. It doesn’t bark when unwelcome guests come. (Although a sign that says there is a vicious snake at large, might do the trick.) Really, I don’t see where they are of any use whatsoever. And you have to feed them live things. Ugh! I’m sticking with my kitties. And waiting for the results of those DNA tests!

Trivia night rocks Durham library By Diana Carr Special to Town Times
Trivia buffs gathered at the Durham Public Library Aug. 6 for an evening of fun and a little bit of mind-stretching. It was Rock & Roll Trivia Night. Participants signed into Kahoot!, a computer program for trivia games, on the tablets provided by the library. The questions then appeared on a large screen, along with a choice of four possible answers. Each team, with its own name and code, entered its answer. A check mark then appeared on the screen by the correct answer. The categories were: early rock & roll, the British invasion, girl groups, award winners, and 21st century rock & roll. Christine Michaud, the library’s assistant director, felt that the night was a big hit. “We came up with the idea for this because ‘Libraries Rock’ is the theme for our summer reading program. And based on the enthusiasm of tonight, we will be doing this again,” she said. “Stay tuned.” Here’s a sampling of some of the questions from Rock & Roll Trivia Night: Which group sang “Under the Boardwalk?”
The Drifters. Who sang “Leader of the Pack?” The Shangri-Las. Beyonce was a singer with what group before going solo? Destiny’s Child. What recording won a Grammy for Song of the Year in 2018? “That’s What I Like” by Bruno Mars. What female artist won the most Grammy awards? Alison Krauss. What British invasion group was banned from touring the U.S. in 1965? The Kinks. What was Little Richard’s birth name? Richard Wayne Penniman. What group has won the most Grammy awards? U2. The Dumpsters (a.k.a. George and Susan Daniels and their son, Patrick) finished atop the five-team field. And why the name? Susan explained, “We have dumpsters in our yard. It was a play on words. We wanted to psych people out.” “We just learned about this See Trivia, A13
