Library has new director By Bailey Wright Town Times

As the new library director, Christine Michaud isn’t planning drastic changes at the Durham Public Library, but hopes to continue the “friendly neighborMichaud hood service” residents find when they visit. “It's like ‘Cheers,’ only with books,” Michaud said with a laugh. First Selectman Laura Francis, left, poses with The Durham Town Green Revitalization Committee’s chairperson, Tina Gossner. The revitalization committee planted 30 new trees, worked the soil, rebuilt the veterans monument, and more, over the last five years. Bailey Wright, Town Times

Local coach, ex-UConn player gets call from Hall Durham Middlefield Falcons defensive coach Douglas Harkins has been inducted into the New Haven Gridiron Club Hall of Fame. The Gridiron Club honored Harkins for his record as a player and his leadership as a team captain during his tenure at Hamden High School (Class of 1988).

Town Times USPS 021-924 Published weekly by Record-Journal at 500 S. Broad Street, Meriden, CT 06450.

The induction ceremony took place at Cascades in Hamden on Sept. 13. During his acceptance speech, Harkins stated: "I can attribute all of my success to the lessons I learned playing football. The commitment to excel on the field trained me to work hard for every accomplishment off the field. I like to tell my children that football taught me the concept of ‘Bigger, Faster, Stronger.’ Every day, in all areas, with every objective, just try to be better than you were the day before and success will inevitably follow."

At Hamden High, Harkins played primarily linebacker and guard. He was named to the All-District team, was an All-Area player in New Haven County, and as a senior, he led the team as one of its captains. He went on to play on scholarship at UConn, starting four years at linebacker. He served as a team captain his junior and senior year. Currently, he shares his talents with the Durham Middlefield Falcons, coaching his sons Lucas and Jacob. — Press Release

RSD13: Engage, Empower, Thrive. By Kathryn Y. Veronesi

After just a few short weeks the enthusiasm and trepidation of the first day of school has morphed into the predictable and positive experience of school life in RSD 13. Students have settled into routines of daily schedules that include being greeted and guided by accomplished and dedicated teachers and staff. project was all about making the green a place people want to use and enjoy daily. “I think a lot of people agree when they see the green being used, it’s gratifying to a lot of people,” Francis said. An estimated $100,000 has gone into the project, between labor and materials. Gossner said about half was donated. “Once we got the plan and we asked for money from people in town,” Gossner said. “Durham's so good about that, people just gave us money and businesses gave us money.” Gossner said the largest single donation was $15,000. She said more than 70 individuals donated and around five organizations and a dozen businesses contributed too. Gossner has a collection of special moments from years working on the project, from people unexpectedly donat-

project as a perfect example of when a small group of people get together, and are passionate about something, how well and how quickly … work can get down.” So far, the revitalization has included 32 newly planted trees, soil work and a monument to local military veterans, which includes new wood on nearby benches thanks to a local Eagle Scout. Every tree in the green has been dedicated to a person, a family, or a group. Gossner said one tree is dedicated to a family as inspired by The Lorax, a children’s story advocating for the importance of nature. The kids in that family decided they wanted the tree more than traditional Christmas gifts that year. A map of the green and tree dedications was installed near the Town Hall a few weeks ago as well. Every tree also has a plaque signifying who it is dedicated to. Gossner said they tried to keep the trees as diverse as possible, planting Kwanzan Cherry trees to both ends for added color.

The project first started as putting together a plan for future revitalization and guidelines for upkeep, until Francis pushed for the plan to actually be used as intended. “I didn’t realize the extent of the emotion that a lot of people had about the lack of maintenance which had been done up to that point on the green,” Francis said. “Especially the neighbors in close proximity, but really a lot of members of our community at large … had been harboring disappointment for awhile.” She said it was easy to support a comprehensive plan that would ensure long-term care of the green. The committee not only planted trees and improved the green’s current condition, it also put together a plan that includes yearly pruning and soil work and guidelines for how to use the green for events with minimal harm to the space. “There will be a plan to look at, to look to for guidance in the future,” Francis said. bwright@record-journal.com

Letters to the Editor To the editor: It is great that Adam Greenberg, a Guilford native, has decided to run for the 12th Senatorial district. Adam lives in Branford with his wife and two sons. He is a breath of fresh air, and with his work ethic and cando attitude will be perfect to represent Durham.

What you need to know about the fair By Bailey Wright Town Times

The 99th annual Durham Fair is set to open Thursday, Sept. 27, bringing in more than 200,000 people throughout the weekend. Here’s a few things to know before you attend. The fair will include traditional activities such as tractor and animal pulls, demolition derby, fried food, nonstop live music and livestock, craft and food exhibits. It will also feature unique offerings like giant pumpkin growing, wood carving, pig races and an animal costume parade. “Living in Durham, (the Durham Fair) is kind of like a national holiday,” said Debbie Huscher, marketing coordinator for the fair asso-

ciation. “There really is something for everybody.” More than 1,700 volunteers and 30 or so executive volunteers make the fair possible. Over $100,000 in prizes are awarded to exhibit winners and nearly $500,000 is spent on public safety. “Everybody on the Durham Fair is doing it for really the love of the fair, really love of the community,” Huscher said.

Melissa Etheridge talks the Durham Fair By Lauren Takores Record-Journal staff

Melissa Etheridge, the iconic folk rock singer-songwriter and Grammy Award winner, is kicking off the Durham Fair’s weekend entertainment with a concert on Friday, Sept. 28. “People love live music at a fair, I’ve always enjoyed playing them,” Etheridge said during an interview with “On the Record: Music.” “Usually I get families that show up,” she said. “People have been out all day, they’ve been having fun.” This year marks the 25th anniversary of Etheridge’s mainstream breakthrough album, “Yes I Am.” The album includes “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window,” which are still on rotation at many radio stations that include 90s songs in their format. She’s gearing up for a “Yes I Am” celebratory tour that will take her through the South this fall.

But she won’t be resting on her laurels for long. She’s working on an album, slated for release next year, looking at what’s been happening in society during the last few years.

Etheridge’s career spans more than 30 years. As her songs progressed from love, sex and betrayal to growing social awareness, her diagnosis of breast cancer in

Associated Press

2004 “was a big bonk on the head,” she said. “I have since found my own peace and my own love,” she said. “I’m also able to look around and see hope, and desire, and pain, and dreams.” She said her love of music and performing has kept her going, as has her desire to be a better musician.

“If you saw me a few years ago, and you come see me this summer,” she said, “you will notice that I play the guitar a lot more, and better, than I did years ago.” Tickets for concerts at the Durham Fair are included with fair admission, available at www.durhamfair.org. “No need to preach,” she said. “We’re all screaming and hollering enough. It’s about the whole experience, getting inside the emotional experience.”

New this year is the Connecticut Craft Beer and Cider Tasting, which will run Thursday through Sunday. The festival costs an additional $10, with add-ons available. Huscher said the fair committee found a lot of demand for beer and cider. “It’s gotten a lot of buzz, no pun intended,” Huscher said. The new feature will also include educational components and offers people a chance to try local breweries without having to travel to each one, Huscher said.

Must-dos “I find the discovery tent fascinating because it’s always new every year. There’s always different exhibits in there,” First Selectman Laura Francis said. “And then of course the animals, it’s not something that you see everywhere,” she said. “Nowhere can you see the display of livestock as you find at the Durham Fair.” Huscher agrees, saying going through the barns is a quintessential agricultural fair activity. “For a lot of people, seeing a cow up front and personal is a new experience,” Huscher said.

Entertainment Melissa Etheridge will headline the Durham Fair’s Friday concert. Etheridge’s 30-year career includes hits “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window,” for which she won a Grammy Award in 1995. Wendy Manemeite, entertainment coordinator, said she has wanted to bring Etheridge to the fair for the past few years. “This year we were early enough,” she said. “We were able to get onto her schedule.” On the main stage Saturday, Scotty McCreery is scheduled to perform. McCreery won American Idol in 2011 and went on to win ACM Best New Artist, CMT Video of the Year and ACA Breakthrough Artist of the Year. On Sunday afternoon, the USO Show Troupe will take the main stage for the fair’s second annual Military Appreciation Day. The troupe performs a variety of music, including Top 40s, Broadway, Big Band and some patriotic pieces. “It’s very patriotic and it’s appealing to all age groups,” Huscher said. Throughout the weekend, local artists, including See Fair, A18

Time for pumpkins, fairs and a chill in the air To Whom It May Concern (or Not Concern):

goodly amount of downt i m e.

Autumn here. I think that just about covers everybody. I am aware that some of you are trying to hold on to summer with both hands, but that never works. She is a fickle girl and she will leave when she is good and ready, and not a moment before or after. And then there are those who welcome me, and are eagerly awaiting my arrival.

Oh, and there’s more, as you know. How about those hayrides, and all the fairs, and apple picking? You’re starting to get excited, aren’t you?

I have it on good authority that summer has been a bit tough on you at times. She has seen fit to bombard you with some rather grueling temps. She means no harm. Those tropical-feeling days felt good to her. I mean, she’s summer after all. But many of you have complained, and loudly, about them. You felt like you were melting on the sp ot. Enter me. Well, not quite yet, but soon. And you’re going to love what I have in store for you. I am making a promise to you, right here and now, that the trees this year will pop out in the most glorious array of colors. You will be dazzled. I don’t feel like I was up to snuff last year, colorwise, and I would like to make up for it. This year’s palette will knock your socks off. Well, for those of you who wear shoes and

socks. I know not everyone does. Anyhooooo, you will marvel. Please do not marvel too much while driving. Keep your eyes on the roa d . You will delight in the number of “just right” days, temperature-wise, that I will be offering you. Do days in the 70s float your boat? Good. Prepare for your boat to be floated. And while I’m at it, I shall also give in the offing, picture-perfect blue skies and gentle breezes. It’s true, the days will be shorter, but you are going to love what I will be sandwiching in between sunrise and suns et. Oh, and let’s not forget the pumpkins. I know how you and the kiddies love going to a pumpkin patch and bringing home the best of the bunch, and then carving a funny face or a scary

face or a happy face. And then there’s Halloween. I am always amazed at how you all seem to love it so. Both children and adults. The scary stuff. Dressing up and stepping into the persona of your dreams, if only for a day. You’re welc o m e.

give summer her due. But when she decides she has hung around long enough, and it is time for her to skip out, I will be waiting in the wings. And really, you won’t miss her for long. Because I am going to “wow” you this year.

I am not piggish like ‘Ol Man See You Soon, Winter tends to be. I will pa- Autumn tiently wait my turn, and

And how about Thanksgiving? I think it’s funny, and rather endearing, the way you all stuff yourselves to the gills, as if you did not anticipate ever eating again, and then rolling away from the table and not feeling all that great. We both know you’ll do it again next year, though. And while we’re visiting this cherished day, ladies, try not to work so hard. Some of you love being in the kitchen hour after hour, but some of you don’t. Go easy on yourself. Make sure you have a

CAT OF THE WEEK

Time To Renovate Your Kitchen? South Broad Paint & Home Center wants to give three participants thousands of dollars to use towards a kitchen renovation!

Adelaide, 2 years old, came to Cat Tales with five kittens but is now ready for a forever home of her own. She is a mellow, quiet kitty who loves attention from the people she knows. She is FIV positive and not contagious to humans. FIV is very difficult for other cats to catch. She can live just as long as a cat without FIV. Consider adopting sweet Adelaide. No dogs, no children. For more information and to meet Adelaide, call 860-344-9043, email info@CatTalesCT.org or visit http://www.CatTalesCT.org/cats/Adelaide.

Library From A1

Michaud, 50, first started at the library in 2012, as a circulation assistant and later served as the children’s librarian. After a brief leave, she returned to serve as assistant director for about two years. One of Michaud’s earliest memories is walking out of a public library as a small child, bracing a big stack of books with her chin. She said she’s always loved li-

braries and being a library director has been one of her professional goals since changing careers.

“I wanted the books, but I wanted more of the human connection too,” Michaud said.

by creating more adult programming and thus fulfilling a need community members expressed through surveys.

Michaud said she decided to go to library school — aka get her masters in Library Science at Southern Connecticut State University — after years running her own small business of indexing for publishers and corporate clients. As her children got older she decided to re-evaluate what she wanted and landed on library work.

“Library work, people do think about the books ... but it's really a customer service profession,” she said. “It's about helping the patrons find what they need, whether it's a beach read or a job. And it's very satisfying.”

“We had a very strong children's program ... the adult programming we've beefed up a lot,” Michaud said. “The number of programs and the attendance at adult programs has gone up a lot and I hope to keep that going.” Michaud doesn’t anticipate any drastic changes, but said she hopes to re-evaluate

Sparked by the play of sophomore quarterback Aaron Fiella and receiver Tyler Garretson, Coginchaug Hale-Ray East Hampton (11) was able to make a late charge but it was not nearly enough.

The locals’ defense made some big stops, and big efforts were turned in by Keagan Stojak, Madden Dunleavy and John Fotopoulus. Jacob Clark studied and learned New Hartford's play and came through with a big tackle for the Falcons.

“At times we have to step back a remember that for most of these young men it is only their second game playing tackle,” DurhamMiddlefield coach Chris Costa said. “Learning and growing as a team and as individuals is what it’s all about. The scoreboard may have shown a loss today, but we had lots of personal wins.”
