Scout will fix up trail for Eagle badge By Bailey Wright Town Times
To earn his Eagle Scout badge, Jacob Fazzino is combining his love of the outdoors and scouting.
By Matthew Zabierek Record-Journal staff
Fazzino plans to fix up the Brewster School Upper Trail by next summer.
MERIDEN — Democrats regained control of the 13th Senate District Tuesday as first-time candidate Mary Daugherty Abrams defeated Republican incumbent Len Suzio.
“I used to go to John Lyman (Elementary School) ... and I remember there used to be outdoor trails. That's why I'm an outdoorsy person today,” Fazzino said. The 15-year-old sophomore at Coginchaug Regional High School and Life Scout with Troop 27 started work on the project in February. He considered fixing other trails, but saw the most need at Brewster. His plan includes widening the trail, clearing brush and invasive plants, lining the trail with a cedar edging and putting down landscaping fabric and wood chips to keep brush away. He also hopes to make the short trail wheelchair accessible.

Fazzino said he hopes to use as much natural materials as possible, including cedar trees that have fallen in the woods. “I think it's a project perfect for Jacob because he loves being in the woods. He's always loved being in the woods from day one,” said his mother, Maria Fazzino.
He will also be fixing up one of the school’s outdoor classrooms, which is used largely by the district’s science specialist Susan Michael. “I’m really grateful for Jacob for doing this,” Michael said. “I’m excited to see him work at Brewster. I think a lot of those stu-
teachers and community members have to do things to enhance the lives and experiences of students and people,” Veronesi said.
“I’m incredibly honored that the people of the 13th have entrusted me to be their voice,” Abrams said after declaring victory. “People were ready for something different, and I think what the campaign spoke about spoke to them, and I’m going to do my best to do a really great job, to be their voice and represent them.”
The school district has been working with the foundation, the Independent Day School and the Durham Middlefield Local Wellness Coalition, to host a four-part workshop series called Proactive Parenting. The series explores mental health, wellness, digital safety and drugs and alcohol.
Abrams, 59, is a retired special education teacher and school administrator. She has lived in Meriden for most of her life and raised two children with her husband, former state Rep. James Abrams, now a Superior Court judge.
Founder Merrill Adams said the idea for the foundation evolved from

Education foundation celebrates 10 years By Bailey Wright Town Times
For a decade, the Coginchaug Valley Educational Foundation has supported lifelong learning in Durham and Middlefield by funding nearly a hundred community initiatives. The foundation has awarded 85 grants totaling approximately $115,000. “The great thing about these grants are there's many of them now that are ... embedded in the community,” current foundation president Nancy Earls said.
Those include programs that promote classical music, an adult choir and an adult orchestra. Earls said she is also proud of the grants that encourage outdoor learning and exercise, particularly for children. “We also want to foster community spirit,” Earls said. “It is an extremely generous community. When somebody needs help, everybody comes immediately to help.” Regional School District 13 Superintendent Kathryn Veronesi said the foundation has provided great support. “It's this awesome opportunity that
Abrams comfortably defeated Suzio, Abrams who earned his current term by narrowly defeating Democrat Dante Bartolomeo in 2016. The 13th Senate District — which covers all of Meriden and Middlefield and parts of Cheshire and Middletown — is overwhelmingly Democratic.

Letters to the Editor
It is hard to ascertain who did more harm with the Letter to the Editor titled “Don’t be fooled” in the Oct. 5 edition of the Town Times: Susan McIntosh by writing it or the Town Times for publishing it.
Numerous studies using solid science have exposed its falsehoods. Its author has been publicly disgraced and his findings disavowed. Google the appropriate search words and find numerous repudiations by reputable publications and scientists exposing this mythology, but none supporting it. Frustrated parent To the editor: In 2011, my 9 month old was given a vaccine by his pediatrician in the morning and sent home. By afternoon, he cried inconsolably for four hours straight, banging his head on our shoulders, and finished by vomiting. I called his pediatrician and she said verbatim, "He is having an adverse reaction to the vaccine."

Education CDC, which has a corrupt relationship to vaccine makers. It should be every physician's instinct to elicit Informed consent from their patients by presenting each a copy of the inserts warning of various side effects that come packaged with each vaccine, by its manufacturers. Anecdotes of fear mongering, dismissing adverse reactions to a percentage and somehow giving the impression your child could never be in that percentage, misleading about vaccine efficacy and refusing to divulge all ingredients and side effects is wrong.
I am not a physician but I am frustrated by how many physicians ignore the data and instead rely on the Quality Care Standards of insurance companies and the Ignoring court cases that

Are the adverse reactions exaggerated? If so, then the Big Pharma vaccine makers are even less worthy of our trust. In spite of the criticism of Michael Good, MD, I stand by my previous letter whole heartedly. Ask to see the package insert. Carolyn Salzano Middlefield

school-focused to more community-focused after talking to residents. “The thought was maybe it can just be an educational foundation for the school to fund things that the school couldn't afford,” Adams said. “As we talked to people in the community, many people said well, we spend a lot of money on taxes, but there's not that much for us except our libraries in towns, we need something for everybody.” From there, a board of directors was formed and started asking for donations. “What was really surprising was how many people said ‘yes,’” Adams said. The foundation gives out around 10 grants a year, to any organizations, individual or school. Grants can range from $500 to $5,000. They also give an annual community service award and host several annual community events, including the Trivia Bee. bwright@record-journal.com 203-317-2316

What we need is a benevolent princess
I would be benevolent to my subjects and would work tirelessly to improve their lives. And I would not be the least bit haughty. I would mingle with the masses. Like my namesake (or am I her namesake?), I would be a princess of the people.
Yes, I am the lost royalty they have been searching for. My birth certificate was in error. And I would be whisked away to a tropical island, my kingdom if you will, to lead a life of luxury. I do not wish to end up as a puddle. I would use my powers for good. I think that goes without saying. And any cauldron I would be stirring would not contain any eyes of newt, but rather a lovely concoction of herbs.

Thanks to you, we are able to make even the smallest gift have a big impact - through charitable funds that support community enrichment, health, education, social services, recreation, civic improvement, the environment, animal welfare, and so much more. Together we are able to make a real difference in the lives of so many. Consider the support provided to the Russell Library’s Veterans Writing Group program for the publishing of their book We Were There, featuring photos and stories of ten veterans’ military experiences. And consider the funding of the Chester and Deep River Historical Film Digitization and Presentation Project, archiving 1900s-era films of people, places, and events in Deep River and Chester to preserve glimpes of life as it was for generations to come. ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDS RECOGNIZED John Lindner and Mike Crocco were recently awarded a LakeSmart Home Plaque and Certificate of Achievement presented by First Selectman Edward Bailey and Wetland Enforcement Officer Randy Bernotas. The LakeSmart Home program was developed to encourage environmental stewardship of the Beseck Lake Watershed. Middlefield homeowners and businesses are invited to take the pledge to implement Best Management Practices that will help to improve the environmental quality, recreational access and quality of life for residents. LakeSmart Home was launched by the Lake Beseck Environment Committee last spring. The neighbors chipped away at their projects over the summer. They made improvements to their properties by adding over 30 feet of drainage, dry wells, border gardens, a rain barrel to capture roof water, a composting barrel and more.
