At work: Picking a local Christmas tree By Ashley Kus Record-Journal staff
Herzig: The mature trees are typically eight to 10 years old. It takes quite awhile to harvest a marketable tree.
With the holidays just around the corner, area Christmas tree farmers are preparing for a busy season.
Q: How many trees are ready now at the farm?
According to the Connecticut Christmas Tree Growers Association, approximately 25-30 million real trees are sold in the country every year. In Connecticut alone there are over 70 farms that grow Christmas trees.
Herzig: Hopefully we will have 500 to 600 trees. Q: Does weather impact the growing process?
The Record-Journal stopped by Herzig Family Tree Farm in Durham to talk with owner Warren Herzig about picking out the perfect Christmas tree. The over 100-year old farm is one of three in Herzig Family Tree Farm, Durham. See more photos at myrecordjournal.com the Durham area. Coe celebration coming to a close By Bailey Wright Town Times
This year marked the Levi E. Coe Library's 125th year of existence, and library staff celebrated by traveling back in time with several public programs. Their final program in honor of the anniversary is “The World of Rare Books” which will be held on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 6:30 p.m., thanks to a grant from the Cogin-
chaug Valley Education Foundation. Michael C. Dooling will present an overview of the rare book world and bring several examples of rare manuscripts and books. Registration is required through the library. The Levi E. Coe Library, named after prominent Meriden judge and bank owner Levi E. Coe, who donated it, was a great surprise See Coe, A2
Herzig: This year with the weather we had some good growth and on the other hand because of the weather we have some damaged trees because of the fungus. Q: Have you seen an increase or decrease in demand for real trees versus artificial Christmas trees? Herzig: We see about the same each year. We see families coming back for return visits. In fact some of the families that started in the late 80’s, now their kids are coming with their kids. See Trees, A4
Tree lightings planned The Middlefield Park and Recreation Department, Middlefield Fire Department, the Levi E. Coe Library and Harvest Woods Audio have scheduled Middlefield's annual tree lighting ceremony for Sunday, Dec. 2. A protrait of Levi E. Coe, who donated Middlefield's public library to the town in 1893, hangs in the library. The library celebrated 125 years this year. Bailey Wright, Town Times
The Levi E. Coe Library plans to be open at 4:30 p.m. for Christmas stories and crafts. The official ceremony is scheduled for 5:30 on the Town Green, where the Coginchaug Regional High School band will lead the crowd singing Christmas songs.
Santa and Mrs. Claus are expected to arrive at 6 to help light the trees for the holiday season. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be available to visit with children and for photos. Refreshments will be offered in the firehouse. Durham’s tree lighting will take place Saturday, Dec. 1 on the Durham Town Green. The event begins at 4 p.m. and includes refreshments, hot chocolate, carols and a visit from Santa. — Press Release

to residents, even up to the day of its unveiling on June 6, 1893.
“This small building has been erected for you in hopes that it will not only be of benefit to you, but will stand and be of service to many generations,” Coe said at the library’s dedication. “This small library has also been prepared for you in hopes that it will contribute to your happiness and the happiness of future generations to come.”
“People knew that something was being built here, but they didn't know what it was, it was a secret,” said Jessica Lobner, the library’s current director. “They sent invitations to everybody in town to come (to the site) and nobody knew why they were coming and what was in here.” When residents arrived, Coe made a grand speech, everyone got a tour, and they celebrated with a strawberry festival. This past summer, the library commemorated June 6, which is also Coe’s birthday, with a strawberry festival, the same way it was celebrated in 1893. Lyman OrTucker and Mouse, 8 months old, are brothers who are very bonded and must be adopted together. They are extremely sweet, outgoing, affectionate boys. They like to be held when in the mood and they love to play. They will be fully vetted at the end of November. Don't wait! Adopt the boys now and take them home in December. Q: How do customers pick their own tree? Herzig: They don’t even
have to touch a tree. We’ll cut it down for them, bring it down, net it, tie it on their car. It’s whatever they want to do, but we will pro-

203212
Herzig: It’s all individual. Some people like the Frasers because of the fragrance they give off plus they are a lot more narrow than the Spruces. Q: How tall is the tallest tree a customer can typically pick?
Herzig: I would say about eight to nine feet. I think when they’re out in the field they lose perspective as to how tall a tree actually is. Q: What care do you suggest after a tree is in a home?
that way it opens the pores that the tree can draw water up when you put it in a container. Certainly the stand that you put the tree in should have a minimum of a gallon of water holding capacity. Keep it away from heat sources.

Tips for selecting the perfect tree R206952
Selecting and setting up a Christmas tree is all part of the seasonal fun, but as the centerpiece of holiday decorations for many homes a little extra preparation can help you make the most of your unique display. Where to buy Decide on where you will place the tree. Will it be seen from all sides or will some of it be up against a wall? Be sure to choose a spot away from heat sources, such as TVs, fireplaces, radiators and air ducts. Place the tree clear of doors. Available space Measure the height and width of the space you have available in the room where the tree will be placed. There is nothing worse than bringing a tree indoors only to find it’s too tall. Take a tape measure with you to measure your chosen tree and bring a cord to tie your tree to the car.
Uncle Bob’s
Buy your tree early Remember that trees sold on retail lots in urban areas may have come from out of state and may have been exposed to drying winds in transit. They may have been cut weeks earlier. Buy trees early before the best trees have been sold and where trees are shaded. Ask the retailer whether his trees are delivered once at the beginning of the season or are they delivered at different times during the selling season. Freshness matters Choose a fresh tree. A fresh tree will have a healthy green appearance with few browning needles. Needles should be flexible and not fall off if you run a branch through your hand. Raise the tree a few inches off the ground and drop it on the butt end. Very few green needles should drop off the tree. It is normal for a few inner brown needles to drop off. See Select, A13

How to care for a Christmas tree When a Christmas tree is cut, more than half its weight is water. With proper care, you can maintain the quality of your tree. Below are a number of tips on caring for your tree:
Once home, place the tree in water as soon as possible. Most species can go six to eight hours after cutting the trunk and still take up water. Don’t bruise the cut surface or get it dirty.
Use a stand that fits your tree. Avoid whittling the sides of the trunk down to fit a stand. The outer layers of wood are the most efficient in taking up water and should not be removed. Keep trees away from major sources of heat (fireplaces, heaters, heat vents, direct sunlight). Lowering the room temperature will slow the drying process, resulting in less water consumption each day. The temperature of the water used to fill the See Care, A14

Make a fresh cut to remove about a 1/2-inch thick disk of wood from the base of the trunk before putting the tree in the stand. Make the cut perpendicular to the stem axis. Don’t cut the trunk at an angle, or into a v-shape, which makes it far more difficult to hold the tree in the stand and also reduces the amount of water available to the tree.
To display the trees indoors, use a stand with an adequate water holding capacity for the tree. As a general rule, stands should provide one quart of water per inch of stem diameter. Devices are available that help maintain a constant water level in the stand.

Displaying trees in water in a traditional reservoir type stand is the most effective way of maintaining their freshness and minimizing needle loss problems.
If needed, trees can be temporarily stored for several days in a cool location. Place the freshly cut trunk in a bucket that is kept full of water.

Over the last 125 years, a lot has changed. In 1917, electricity and a furnace were installed in the library, and in the 20s, the library’s trustee bought the vacant Episcopal Church property next door, which was named Library Hall.
And about three years ago, the library became part of the Libraries Online, Inc, (LION), a material-sharing system that suddenly gave its patrons access to millions more books, ebooks and DVDs.

The library was originally only open on Saturdays, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. The first librarian, Lucretia Rockwell, was paid $1 a month.
In 1994, the Mid-Lea Garden Club helped library staff create a Shakespeare Garden in the rear of the building. It includes a bust of William Shakespeare and only flowers and plants which were mentioned in his writings. The garden club still maintains the space.

Coe and his wife Sophia Hall, both Middlefield natives, lost two sons – one who died at birth and the other who died at 14 months. The library was a gift to the town and also a memoriam to their sons.
Around 1970, a decision was made to expand the original library building, connecting it to Library Hall, for about $175,000. The new wing was dedicated in 1974.

I, by industry and frugality, have been enabled to do this much for our old home, the town of nativity,” Coe had said.

A tree that fits Remember to choose a tree that fits where it is to be displayed. For example if the tree is displayed in front of a large window, then all four sides should look as good as possible. If the tree is displayed against a wall, then a tree with three good sides would be okay. A tree with two good sides would work well in a corner. The more perfect a tree, the more expensive it is.

We need to attract people to Durham to support our tax base. We can be concerned with increased property taxes of 1/2 mill or more that the conversion of Korn school will cost, but we cannot be shortsighted about the long-term competition we have with our neighboring towns. A decrease in population would be detrimental to our Grand List, which might cause even higher perhousehold tax rates. Please review the websites of North Branford and Guilford. These towns have a myriad of activities at their community centers. North Branford's Stanley T. Wilson grammar school was converted many years ago and is still thriving with activities for all ages throughout the year.

Given that the state of Connecticut is losing population, reportedly at the rate of 475 people per week (of both aging Baby Boomers and college graduates migrating to cities), it becomes apparent that we are competing for population.
Looking forward for ways to improve our lives and our community is an essential facet of progress. Guide Durham to the future. I plan to support the effort for the Korn community center and will vote yes on Dec. 4. Lou Battipaglia Durham

It’s an exciting time for district schools By Kathryn Y. Veronesi
As we move towards the Thanksgiving break, I am aware of how grateful I am to be a part of a school community and two local communities that care deeply about children. Despite the many demands that call for our attention, it is clear to me that children are the center of our focus. We understand that our investment in our children has a direct impact on the health and well-being of the future of our world. This abiding commitment is evident and so very unique.
