COMMENTARY

How to make the most of your side business By Jeff Jolly

It can be personally and financially rewarding to earn extra cash doing something you enjoy. If you are one of the many Americans supplementing your paycheck by running a small business, here are some tips to help you profitably manage your side gig: Make your business official. Consider running your side job like a real business, even if you have no intention of turning it into something big. Open a separate checking account. Get an Employer Identification Number (EIN), a federal identifier, for tax purposes. Apply for a state tax ID, if your state requires one. And, consider working with a tax

professional who specializes in helping small business owners. Track your earnings and expenses. Store your receipts and use a spreadsheet or app to keep tabs on how much you earn and spend. If expenses are high and income is low, you may want to scale back your efforts or look for ways to reduce costs. As your earnings grow, eligible expenses can help offset a potential tax bill. Find your sweet spot. Look for ways to efficiently increase revenues. Set prices to ensure your costs are covered and focus on your most profitable products or services. Target your best customers and build a repeat business. Market your side

business through social media to grow a following. Be realistic. As your business grows, you may be tempted to quit your day job. Before you turn your efforts into a full-blown career, ask yourself: Is it scalable? It will likely take additional resources to turn your hobby into a fulltime moneymaker. Will you need to invest more of your money in the business? If so, how much? Also, evaluate your ability to obtain more supplies and whether you’ll need to hire an employee or two. Is it sustainable? Consider the size of your market and demand for your product or service. Who is your compe-

Eversource using drones to inspect electric lines Leveraging innovative technologies, Eversource is now using drones to more efficiently inspect electric lines throughout Connecticut. The aerial devices provide the energy company with a close look at high-voltage energy infrastructure, including those spanning remote, hard-to-reach areas.

A drone hovers over electric lines.

The use of drones is limited to inspections of Eversource equipment by certified operators, without compromising the privacy of nearby prop-

erty owners. Using drones will decrease the need for periodic inspections by lowflying helicopters, reducing the use of fossil fuels and lowering the costs associated with annual inspections which are paid for by customers. Drone inspections will also reduce the need for vehicle access to inspect equipment in environmentally sensitive areas. In addition to its routine annual inspections, Eversource plans to also use drones to

assess damage to the electric system in the wake of major storms. During an emergency, the company can launch a camera-equipped drone to collect accurate and timely power line damage information and immediately transfer data to restoration planners. Armed with detailed assessments, system operators can more accurately dispatch crews, establish repair priorities and communicate more precise restoration information to customers.

Business campaign launched by CBIA By Mary Ellen Godin Record-Journal staff

The Connecticut Business and Industry Association is once again launching an election season ad campaign aimed at convincing voters to elect “pro-business” candidates. ”Opinion polls consistently show that taxes, jobs, and the economy are the top issues for people in our state,” said CBIA President and

CEO Joseph Brennan. “We want to make sure those issues are front and center during what we believe is a make-or-break time for Connecticut.”

Brennan said CBIA’s campaign is intended to focus voters’ attention on Connecticut’s economy. CBIA has outlined five policy priorities for lawmakers:

The $600,000 Fix Connecticut campaign will feature print, digital and broadcast advertising and will run into the 2019 General Assembly session when the state will have its first new governor since Gov. Dannel P. Malloy was elected in 2011.

The same poll found that 71 percent of respondents rated the state’s economy is “not so good” or “poor,” and that only 40 percent of respondents said they were better off than a year ago. Another 30 percent said they were worse off and 28 percent said they were the same.

“We wanted to make sure the people who are representing us will be fully aware of our economy and those issues most important to most citizens,” Brennan said. Unlike 2016, CBIA will not be buying advertising time to benefit individual candidates. During that election cycle, the group spent more than $400,000 to help four Republican Senate candidates, including state Sen. CBIA From A12

“The campaign will not mention or endorse any political candidate,” Brennan said. “We will separately do endorsements in the House and Senate races but there will be no expenditures surrounding those endorsements.” The individual candidates have political action groups to assist them with advertising, Brennan said. State economists have said Connecticut is the only state in the country with an economy that hasn’t recovered all the jobs lost in the 2008 recession. It has recovered just 88 percent of all jobs lost during the recession, trailing the region and country in job growth, according to the state Department of Labor. mgodin@record-journal.com 203-317-2255 Twitter: @Cconnbiz

Energy assistance available The Connecticut Community Action Agency Network is accepting energy assistance applications for the 2018-2019 heating season. Connecticut residents struggling to pay utility bills can apply for home heating assistance at local Community Action agencies. In Connecticut this program is called the Connecticut Energy Assistance Program and is housed under the Department of Social Services. Homeowners and/or renters may apply, and funds may be used to pay for whatever source of heating residents have in their homes. This includes wood, electric, oil, kerosene or natural gas. For more information on the Connecticut Energy Assistance Program, visit www.cafca.org or contact the Connecticut Association for Community Action, 203 Main St., 300 Plaza Middlesex, Middletown, CT 06457, or call 860-8329438.

Adult education offers free classes for Durham and Middlefield residents looking to earn their high school diploma. Three high school completion options are available including online classes, GED and the National External Diploma Program, an individualized, self-paced program without classroom instruction.

English classes for non-English speaking residents are also available for all proficiency levels. Enrollment is ongoing. There is no charge for Durham and Middlefield residents. Day and evening classes are available in Middletown, Killingworth and Old Saybrook. Call 860-343-6044.
