Middlefield votes former teacher to school board

Fasano will keep working with Dems By Mike Savino Record-Journal staff

By Bailey Wright Town Times

Two years ago, state Sen. Len Fasano became Republican Pro Tempore, the closest a Republican has come to presiding over a chamber since 1994, after his party forced an 18-18 tie in the Senate.

Residents elected a former teacher and parent of school-age children to the vacant Regional School District 13 board of education position during a special town meeting Monday. Maura Caramanello, 45, of Middlefield, was elected by more than 50 residents who attended the special meeting, according to board of selectmen and board of education member Bob Yamartino. He said she ran unopposed and was voted in unanimously by acclamation vote.

It was the result of Republicans Fasano making regular electoral gains over nearly a decade, going from a 24-12 disadvantage in the Senate after the 2008 election to a tie in 2016.

Caramanello said she went for the opening because she feels “strongly about the district and the direction of where the district is going,” and felt she could be a benefit to the board with the perspectives of both a parent and a former teacher in the district. New wellness center offers holistic healing By Bailey Wright Town Times

A new wellness center on Main Street in Durham is designed as a hub for holistic healing. The Red Barn wellness center opened in September. The 10,000 square foot building is home to about a dozen practitioners in areas including psychotherapy, reiki, intuitive energy therapy, yoga, massage, art therapy, hypnotherapy and crystal healing. “I don't think there's a center like

this in the state ... that has a salt cave, a big area for yoga, a store, psychotherapists, sound healing …,” said practitioner Stephanie RosallyKaplan, whose areas include reiki, psychic medium, gemstone healing and photography. “The cooperation of supporting each other, regarding sharing clients or referring clients … is magical.” A salt cave, under construction, is expected to open in about a month. Janice Juliano, a Middletown resident, is the architect of the center See Wellness, A2

and Red Barn coordinator. She and two other practitioners expanded from Middletown together. Juliano, a social worker for 40 years, said as the work became more taxing she sought out a teacher of the medicine wheel, a Native American concept that encompasses mind, body, emotion and spirit. She later lived for eight years in New Mexico, before returning to Connecticut to start a private practice in 2009. Juliano offers holistic psychotherapy and is a medicine-wheel facilitator at the Red Barn. “Many psychotherapists have theories that encompass the mind and it’s about talking, but it doesn't go further than that,” Juliano said. “(Here) we look at the whole person. The whole person has to be taken into consideration, and the person in the environment, the person in the community, because that has an effect on a person.” She said people dealing with

CAT OF THE WEEK Three-year-old Milo has lived most of his life outside, fending for himself. He is so happy to now be safe and cared for. He loves scratches, belly rubs and getting petted. He is a very affectionate and loving guy. Milo is FIV+, which is not contagious to humans and is very difficult for other cats to catch (they'd have to exchange blood). His best friend is Bailey and the pair would love to be adopted together. For more information, call 860-3449043, email info@CatTalesCT.org or visit CatTalesCT.org/cats/Milo-2.

“More and more people are getting discouraged by all the pharmaceuticals and side effects and all those things that are creating more problems for people – we're going back to the basics, which is holistic and connection,” Juliano said. Juliano said someone that has never been exposed to holistic healing, but is interested in learning, can start by visiting the Borrowed Time Emporium inside the barn, which sells items like crystals, gemstones and homemade jewelry. Tours of the building are also available Monday afternoon with Stephanie Rosally-Kaplan. The Red Barn previously held Caroyln Adams Country Barn, which closed in January of 2017 when owner Carolyn Adams retired. The building has been vacant since. The Red Barn’s next community fair will be on Sunday, Jan. 27, and geared toward pet health and wellness. More information can be found on The Red Barn in Durham website.

regain control with a 23-13 majority. “There’s always a role for us to play,” he said during a recent interview for the “Morning Record” podcast. “Sometimes it’s a spoiler role and sometimes its a slowdown role, but we do have a role to play” The interview is part of a “Morning Record” series previewing the upcoming legislative session. Fasano said he believes the recent election results were largely a reflection of voters’ feelings toward President Donald Trump, particularly in traditional Republican strongholds in Fairfield County. “I think some folks were blinded by their dislike of this president to the point that rational thought took a backseat relative to Connecticut,” he said. “Why would you want to put a group of folks who have shown a propensity to put the state of Connecticut last in many of the economic drivers — put that same group back in with the majority?” Fasano said he was hope-

ful voters would have credited Republicans for the bipartisan budget the legislature adopted in September 2017 and amended in May. He also said Gov.-elect Ned Lamont appears “more open and more inclusive” than outgoing Gov. Dannel P. Malloy. One area where Fasano expects bipartisan collaboration is on health care, noting he and Senate President Pro Tempore Martin Looney, D-New Haven, have worked together on a number of bills since 2010. He also thinks the legislature will be able to adopt sports gambling, with the biggest obstacle being talks with the state’s two tribal casinos. Fasano is more critical of the legalization of recreational marijuana, saying the decision shouldn’t be made for financial reasons. “If it was the right policy and it was good for families and kids and it was a good health policy, we would have done it 20 years ago,” he said. Fewer worries, more Mary Poppins, this year ished life.

Well, it’s that time again. A new year rolling around. The time when we buck up and tackle that often-long list of things we want to tweak, or maybe change entirely, things about ourselves or our lives. We intend to step into our full selves, who we are truly meant to be. This is the year we are going to engage the Magic so that we can sculpt the life of our dreams. We set our sights on the stuff that forms the building blocks of our everyday lives. We’ll get to the gym more. We’ll eat healthier. We’ll take more walks. We’ll finally get around to de-cluttering. Full steam ahead! Well, this year I’m going for the big stuff. I need an overhaul.

soul. I wish to be light of spirit. I was once, a long time ago. No matter how dark the clouds over my head, I maintained a Mary Poppins attitude. This would pass. The sun would come out. Greener pastures lay ahead. I was the Unsinkable Molly Brown. I was tough, and sturdy. The winds of illfate, when they blew, were never able to un-tether me. I lived in a bubble of “Everything is going to be just fine. Better than fine.” I would just put my head down and buck those winds, one fearless step at a time, until I came out the other side. I lived in the moment. I rel-

Well, that’s about to change. I want Mary Poppins back. And that dear girl is starting to inch her way toward me. She pokes her head around the corner from time to time, with the promise that she will make a full comeback. She’s there when I marvel at a sunset. She’s there when my kitties are snuggled on my lap. In November, our students at the elementary and middle schools hosted local veterans and learned about the contribution of men and women in the military. Our students listened to stories and saw through the experience of family and community members the impact these people have and continue to have on the world. The career exploration program at Coginchaug is designed to provide students with real-world experience in identified areas of careerinterest by working in partnership with nearby businesses and industries, schools, medical facilities, government, and other community and service organizations. The job shadow experience helps assist students in defining their focus for postsecondary education and employment by affording them authentic opportunities to apply what they learn in the classroom to the world of work.
