Future of Korn building still uncertain By Bailey Wright Record-Journal staff
At its next meeting, the Regional School District 13 Board of Education is expected to consider whether to raze the former Korn School building or further analyze usage options, including leasing it for outside use.
cis passed the baton back to the school district after the town voted in December not to turn the empty school, 144 Pickett Lane, into a community center.
During a utilization meeting on April 25 – which Francis and Middlefield First Selectman Edward Bailey attended – Francis extended an offer to partner with the school disDurham First Selectman Laura Fran- trict as a revenue source, but de-
clined to drive any new proposals for the empty school. “If you decide that you agree that it's a community asset, then I would love to partner with you and help utilize the space,” Francis said. Specifically, the town would use the space for services currently being offered at the Durham Activity Center, 350 Main St.
Plans for memorial yurt take shape
She said the town budgets about $56,000 a year for the activity center, which would be transferred to the school district as a usage fee. “The town of Durham is no longer in a position to take the lead on this, but if you would like, the town of Durham can be a partner,” Francis said. See Korn, A2
School budget vote May 7 By Bailey Wright Record-Journal staff
Residents of Durham and Middlefield will be asked to vote on Regional School District 13 Board of Education’s 2019-20 budget proposal and capital plan, during referendum on Tuesday, May 7.

This summer, The Independent Day School, in Middlefield, will build an outdoor yurt in honor of the son of a former staff member, who died in a boating accident a year ago.
The Board of Education’s proposed fiscal year 2019-20 budget totals $36,819,319 and its capital improvement plan comes to $6.9 million.
“It'll really be a great honor to Spencer, who was a person who loved nature and was out in nature a lot, so a great thing to build in his memory,” said head of school Marijke Kehrhahn.
Board chairman Bob Moore said he is very confident in the proposed plans, especially considering the uniqueness of such a large reduction in expenditures.

The Board of Education had originally only considered two options: selling the building to Durham for use as a community center, and razing it. In December, Durham residents voted down a $7 million proposal to convert the school into a community center, forcing the school district to re-elevuate its options.
USPS 021-924
Durham’s feasibility study showed the building to be in good condition, and Francis said because of this, she would not support razing it if other uses could be found. “I would agree that tearing it down is not really high on my priority list, I would like to see some kind of uses (explored),” board chairman Bob Moore said in agreement. Board member Norm Hicks expressed concern that delaying what may be an inevitable razing might mean the school district incurs even more expenses than expected, through both regular maintenance and necessary capital improvements. Razing the building is estimated to cost about $1 million. To “moth ball” the building would be around $70,000 per year, based on past quotes.

His father Charlie Mugford worked as director of enrollment management at IDS for more than two years. Spencer Mugford also worked at the school for a summer, as part of the Fearless Facilities Team. He is remembered as a nature and animal lover and a “fearless learner,” as Charlie Mugford described him on The Spencer Mugford Memorial Fund webpage.
fragility of our world and ultimately a passion for promoting the responsible stewardship of nature in all of its forms.” School administrators and his family both hope that they can instill that same passion for environmental protection in students through the yurt. A few years ago, the school established centers of excellence, including one for environmental education and literacy. They hope the yurt will serve as a physical space for that specific learning, especially through its location on school’s 33 acres of grounds. “We have an extensive nature trail system and a lot of land that students can go out and watch birds, catch
frogs, catch fish, be in the forest, be in the fields,” Kehrhahn said. “So we wanted to put the yurt right at the entrance to our nature trail so that it will have direct access to the natural environment as well.” The 20-ft round yurt will be made of natural materials and sit off the ground, on small posts. Kehrhahn said windows and a skylight will provide natural light in the fully wooden structure. There will be no water or electricity to the structure, and no furniture either, although Kehrhahn said they may have students build a few benches. The school received approval from the Planning B:8.7” and Zoning Commission T:8.7”working and is currently with Smiling S:8.7” Woods Yurt on
the final design before applying for a building permit. Kehrhahn said they hope to receive the yurt’s panels and kit this June and have the structure ready before the start of school this fall. The yurt will be fully paid for by The Spencer Mugford Memorial Fund. Charlie Mugford could not be reached for comment. bwright@record-journal.com 203-317-2316 Twitter: @baileyfaywright

1. To qualify for this offer, you must have a new or existing Platinum Savings account and enroll the account in this offer between 03/25/2019 and 05/31/2019. This offer is subject to change at any time, without notice. This offer is available only to Platinum Savings customers in the following states: AR, CT, DC, FL, GA, MD, MS, NC, NJ, NY, SC, TX and VA. In order to earn the Special Interest Rate of 2.08% (Special Rate), you must deposit $25,000 in new money (from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., or its affiliates) to the enrolled savings account and maintain a minimum daily account balance of $25,000 throughout the term of this offer. The corresponding Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for this offer is 2.10%. The Special Rate will be applied to the enrolled savings account for a period of 12 months, starting on the date the account is enrolled in the offer. However, for any day during that 12 month period that the daily account balance is less than the $25,000 minimum, the Special Rate will not apply, and the interest rate will revert to the standard interest rate applicable to your Platinum Savings account. As of 02/15/2019, the standard interest rate and APY for a Platinum Savings account in AR, CT, DC, FL, GA, MD, MS, NC, NJ, NY, SC, TX and VA with an account balance of $0.01 and above is 0.05% (0.05% APY). Each tier shown reflects the current minimum daily collected balance required to obtain the applicable APY. Interest is compounded daily and paid monthly. The amount of interest earned is based on the daily collected balances in the account. Upon the expiration of the 12 month promotional period, standard interest rates apply. Minimum to open a Platinum Savings account is $25. A monthly service fee of $12 applies in any month the account falls below a $3,500 minimum daily balance. Fees may reduce earnings. Interest rates are variable and subject to change without notice. Wells Fargo may limit the amount you deposit to a Platinum Savings account to an aggregate of $1 million. Offer not available to Private Banking or Wealth customers. 2. Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is effective for accounts opened between 03/25/2019 to 05/31/2019. The 11-month New Dollar CD special requires a minimum of $25,000 brought to Wells Fargo from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank N.A., or its affiliates to earn the advertised APY. Public Funds and Wholesale accounts are not eligible for this offer. APY assumes interest remains on deposit until maturity. Interest is compounded daily. Payment of interest on CDs is based on term: For terms less than 12 months (365 days), interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or at maturity (the end of the term). For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. A fee for early withdrawal will be imposed and could reduce earnings on this account. Special Rates are applicable to the initial term of the CD only. At maturity, the Special Rate CD will automatically renew for a term of 6 months, at the interest rate and APY in effect for CDs on renewal date not subject to a Special Rate, unless the Bank has notified you otherwise. 1,2. Due to the new money requirement, accounts may only be opened at your local branch. Wells Fargo reserves the right to modify or discontinue the offer at any time without notice. Minimum new money deposit requirement of at least $25,000 is for this offer only and cannot be transferred to another account to qualify for any other consumer deposit offer. If you wish to take advantage of another consumer deposit offer requiring a minimum new money deposit, you will be required to do so with another new money deposit as stated in the offer requirements and qualifications. Offer cannot be combined with any other consumer deposit offer, except the Portfolio by Wells Fargo $500 offer, available from March 25, 2019 until May 31, 2019. Offer cannot be reproduced, purchased, sold, transferred, or traded. 3. If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the bonus interest rate on all eligible savings accounts, and discounts or fee waivers on other products and services, will discontinue and revert to the Bank’s then-current applicable rate or fee. For bonus interest rates on time accounts, this change will occur upon renewal. Horse riders reach nationals Movado Farms, Inc. of Durham is proud to announce that two of their Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Alumni Division riders have qualified to compete in the IHSA National Final Championship. The IHSA National Championship Show determines team, individual and alumni champions in both hunter seat and Western. Fedora of Movado Farms, Inc. has served as the coach and trainer for both the Wesleyan University and Yale University Equestrian teams as well as an Alumni IHSA team. From each Zone Finals, the top two individual riders from each division earn the sport to ride at the National Final. The road to qualifying is
rigorous. After accruing the necessary points during their regular competition season, riders Melissa Korteweg and Stephie Harnois moved on to Regional Finals. At that event, Korteweg placed first in the Alumni fences division and Harnois placed second earning each of them a spot to compete in Zones at Mount Holyoke College. At the Zone 1 Finals Harnois and Korteweg rode against some of the top riders in New England. Harnois took first place at that competiSee Horse, A19

A new service for those who have a loved one struggling with substance abuse or addiction is being offered in the Durham/Middlefield area. Hope and Support Groups provide a safe and confidential space for parents, guardians and all others dealing with a loved one’s disease of substance abuse or addiction. The group is led by two trained facilitators, a licensed professional and a para-professional with lived experience. Recognizing that this disease affects entire families, the group provides a forum to share openly while receiving peer support, information and the compassion that everyone deserves, thus breaking the stigma and isolation created by the disease. The group meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Middlefield Federated Church, 402 Main St., Middlefield. Parents, guardians, siblings, partners and all others living with a loved one’s substance abuse disorder or addiction are invited to attend.

The Missus would like to get a part-time job outside the home-you know, for the sake of her sanity-but it really isn’t feasible. Child/bunny daycare is so expensive. And yes, we need a bigger home/ hole. There’s a lot of shoveling in our future, that’s for sure.

People don’t usually think of trees as living things, and I believe that’s wrong. What if someone decided you weren’t a living thing and just ignored you! How would you feel? Also, the rainforests are a crucial part of the ecosystem. They should not be cut down for a selfish human’s benefit. I mean, don’t you have enough?! The rainforest is a shelter for hundreds of species, and provides food for them as well.
Now, I want you to think of all the things the trees give us. You might say, oh wood and paper. In reality, there are way more. The pencil in your hand, your favorite type of gum, sponges, the aspirin in your doctor’s office, the henna you got at a fair, the corks on a wine bottle at the fancy restaurant on the corner, the rubber in your parent’s car tires, even the air we breathe comes from trees. Now tell me, what do you give to the trees? You probably don’t give much, if at all. Does that seem fair to

Hello, my name is Alexandros, and today I am here to speak on behalf of the trees. I do not believe that trees get the appreciation they deserve. I mean, they’re practically the glue that holds the Earth together, seeing as they provide oxygen for humans, shelter and food for animals, and enrich the soil with their roots.
Would you want your home to be cut down? I think not.

Now, I would like to talk about something that is being done to protect the majestic wonders that are trees. Trees are respectable too. They live for thousands of years, and stay strong throughout. Take the Encephalartos Woodii. It is the last surviving tree of its type. The other kinds went extinct in dinosaur times! Does that not fill you with inspiration? I’ll tell you, it makes my spirit soar. Herbicides are a big problem too. Did you know that about 1,500 ponderosa pines died from the herbicide ACP in Oregon? I think that’s horrible. All living things deserve to have a safe, long life. And what did the tree ever do to you? They are innocent creatures.
