Communities may share town planner By Bailey Wright Town Times

Apple Barrel set to open Saturday Lyman Orchards’ Apple Barrel market in Middlefield will open Saturday with a day full of tastings, music and activities to welcome back customers and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. The day will start at 9 a.m. with activities through 2 p.m., although the store will remain open until 6 p.m.

“I've had a lot of people this winter asking me when we're opening, so I suspect we're gonna have a good turnout,” said owner John Lyman. Spokesman Tim Burt said the market will have live Irish music for about an hour around 10 a.m., thanks to the duo Dublin Down, with Monica Hamilton McCarthy and Patrick McCarthy. They will also offer

holiday food items like Irish soda bread, corned beef and cabbage specials and leprechaun cupcakes. “We felt it was important to celebrate the season as well,” Burt said. Staff from the Levi Coe Library will visit from 9 to 10:30 a.m. for storytime and a craft.

He said repair and maintenance arrangements have long been made by various staff members, including himself, who may not have any experience in the task or may not have the time to spare. At the age of 40, she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Education and obtained a Master’s Degree in Library Science at Southern Connecticut State University. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Neil, of Durham, daughters, Karen and husband John Augeri of Middlefield, Kimberly and husband Kenneth Dingley of Hebron, granddaughters Sarah and Rachel Dingley, and cousins, nephews and nieces in Maine, California and Texas. An avid reader since the age of two, Gloria pursued her love of books in her choice of profession as Librarian and Media Specialist at the Morgan School in Clinton for 16 years. After her retirement, she found great joy in volunteering for many years at the Durham Public Library and the Levi E. Coe Library in Middlefield.

In addition to her love of reading, Gloria became an ardent follower of the UConn Huskies Women’s team and the Boston Red Sox. Gloria’s family would like to acknowledge their gratitude for the loving care provided by her caregiver and “adopted daughter” Daniella Alves who truly became a member of the family, and to the nursing staff and doctors at the Weiss Comfort Care Unit at Middlesex Hospital. Funeral services were held at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown, and burial in Middlefield Cemetery will be in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Durham Public Library in Durham, CT or the Levi E.Coe Library, Middlefield. To share memories or express condolences online please visit www. biegafuneralhome.com

Letters to the Editor A disservice to students To the editor: I’m saddened by the news of the proposed phase out of the Latin program in Regional School District 13. I am a 2013 alumna of Coginchaug Regional High School and am a proud product of six years of Latin instruction. The elimination of the Latin program will

serve as a disservice to students who wish to gain a greater understanding of the language and Roman culture. Does the Latin program have lower enrollment numbers than other languages? Sure. But that is one of the many incentives to selecting Latin. Much like the towns that comprise Regional School See Letters, A14

Durants

Wedding Rental Giveaway Win $2,000 in Wedding & Party Rentals! Durants Party Rentals is giving you a chance to rent a really, really big tent. HOW TO ENTER / CONTEST DATES:

Simply go to myrecordjournal.com/RENTAL and register to win! You can enter once a day now through March 28th. Our winner will be announced in print and online April 4th. We will also announce the winner March 31st at the Durants Party Rentals First Annual Bridal Show (see their facebook page for more info on that event!).

THE GRAND PRIZE:

District 13, the Latin program is a close knit community where appreciation for the contributions of others is readily observable. Together, we not only learned how to conjugate verbs with speed and accuracy (as anyone in Mrs. Sersanti’s Latin class can attest), but we read classics like “The Aeneid” and learned about the foundation of Western civilization. Latin was a mix of language and history instruction — a perfect interdisciplinary hybrid consistent with the educational mission of Regional School District 13. While I did not study Latin past high school, I used Latin every single day. In college, I was required to take two semesters of a language. My foundational knowledge in Latin helped

immensely. Currently, I am second year law student (to use the appropriate Latin terminology, juris doctor candidate). I can say with confidence that I rely on my Latin education every single day to understand legal terminology and concepts. Latin helped me with the SATs, LSATs, and will undoubtedly help me take the bar exam next year. I am disappointed by the superintendent’s decision to put the Latin program on the chopping block and sincerely hope that this proposal is reconsidered. Greta R. Wilt Boston, Massachusetts

Capital Improvements The budget represents capital fund transfers of about $785,000, up from around $677,000 last year, which will largely go toward building maintenance and improvements this year. “The Board of Finance has asked me to come up with a plan to properly maintain and invest in our infrastructure, in our buildings in particular,” Bailey said. “So we can set aside our funds so we can do all the necessary repairs to these buildings to keep them functioning ...”

Bailey was expected to present his proposed budget to the Board of Finance during a Wednesday, March 14 public hearing.

The budget also shows a decrease in police spending by about $32,600, which is accounted for in payroll decreases due to state-regulated salaries, and not to any decrease in staffing or resources, according to Bailey.

The Dudley Farm Museum, 2351 Durham Road, has set a two-day rug hooking workshop for March 23 and 24, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with Michele Micarelli. For more information and to register, call 203-457-0770.

About $119,000 would go toward community center improvements, to keep the 25year-old building up to date with interior paint and repaired flooring. “We have a whole host of projects in that building to keep it going, I hope, for another 25 years,” Bailey said.

CATS OF THE WEEK

Aly, 6 years old, was pregnant when she came to Cat Tales, and soon delivered four healthy kittens. She was a good mother to her kittens but now that they have been adopted to good homes, she’s ready for her forever home. Aly loves to be petted and flips onto her back for belly rubs. She can be a bit shy at first, and just needs time to get to know you. Come meet Aly to see what a sweet cat she is. For more information, call 960344-9043, email info@CatTalesCT.org or visit CatTalesCT.org/cats/Aly.

Smokey, 5 years old, came to Cat Tales when his owner went into a convalescent home. He is very confused as to why he’s at a shelter and longs for a home. He is very sweet, loves to be petted and loves attention. Smokey would love to cuddle on the couch or bed with you. He is very mellow but prefers to be the only pet in the home. For more information and to meet Smokey, call 860-3449043, email info@CatTalesCT.org or visit CatTalesCT.org/cats/Smokey.
