The town of Durham has been awarded a $400,000 grant for new sidewalks on Main Street.

The new sidewalk would travel about 1.5 miles up the west side of Main Street from Cozy Corner Restaurant, 5 New Haven Road, to Citizen’s Bank, 376 Main St., Francis said.

There would be two breaks in the sidewalk – one at the town green, and the other between the public library, 7 Maple Ave., and Church of Epiphany, 196 Main St.

Francis said town engineer Brian Curtis is working on a phased construction timeline so the project can be started while the town awaits remaining funding.

The project is estimated to cost $1.2 million. The town is exploring other grants to cover the remaining costs.

Curtis could not be reached for comment. The grant comes from the

Community Connectivity Grant Program, a part of former Governor Dannel P. Malloy’s Let’sGoCT! transportation initiative, with the goal of improving accommodations for bicyclists and pedestrians in urban, suburban and rural community centers.

seminar will cover how to get your plant successfully planted and how to care for it in cool weather. The group hopes to be able to give attendees at the second seminar a plant to go home with.

Team Pumpkin, a group of local growers who share an online network, is planning a seminar this month, and one in April, to recruit new growers to the “sport” they love.

Middlefield grower Lloyd Blair said the goal of the free seminars is to get new people introduced to the sport, to get more pumpkins to the Durham Fair display in September, and build the number of local growers.

“We just really want to encourage people to try something new,” said Chelsea Cleveland, co-coordinator of the Durham Fair Giant Pumpkin exhibit.

“The excitement on the weigh off night is unbelievable,” Blair said. “Even if you don’t have a big pumpkin it’s a good time.”

The first seminar will be held Wednesday, March 20, 2 p.m., at the public safety building on the Durham Fairgrounds and will cover “first time growing fundamentals.” At the same location and time on Sunday, April 28, the

Weigh-in is the night before the Durham Fair kicks off in September, when all the growers bring their pumpkins to the fairgrounds to be weighed and officially entered into the competition.

Phasing out Latin class proposed Superintendent of Schools Kathryn Veronesi’s budget calls for a phase out of the Latin program starting next year.

Her proposal includes a series of staffing changes, most notably reduc- Veronesi ing Latin staffing at Strong School by the equivalent of half a full-time position. The move would eliminate Latin for incoming seventh graders next year with the goal of phasing out the class over the next few years.

Veronesi’s proposal, which she laid out for the Board of Education during two meetings last month, calls for an increase of 0.06 percent, or $22,370, from the current year. The proposed budget

The district currently offers Spanish and French courses, which begin in seventh grade and continue through high school. Administrators are considering offering a new option, possibly sign language or Mandarin. Veronesi said administrators are exploring other ways to offer Latin studies to interested students, including a school club or additional coursework.

Several residents spoke in favor of keeping the program at both budget meetings. During a Feb. 13 meeting, Middlefield resident Joseph Ochterski, a high school chemistry teacher, said he has seen the benefits of Latin, as it helps students understand words and terminology. He shared a letter from his daughter, who studied Latin in the district and is now a graduate student studying

Both accounts are FDIC-insured up to the maximum allowable limit. Platinum Savings offer available in CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, MD, NJ, NY, SC and VA. Fixed Rate CD offer available in AL, AZ, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, MD, NJ, NM, NV, NY, PA, SC and VA. Portfolio by Wells Fargo® customers are eligible to receive an additional interest rate bonus on these accounts.3 1. To qualify for this offer, you must have a new or existing Platinum Savings account and enroll the account in this offer between 01/21/2019 and 03/22/2019. This offer is subject to change at any time, without notice. This offer is available only to Platinum Savings customers in the following states: CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, MD, NJ, NY, SC and VA. In order to earn the Special Interest Rate of 2.08% (Special Rate), you must deposit $25,000 in new money (from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., or its affiliates) to the enrolled savings account and maintain a minimum daily account balance of $25,000 throughout the term of this offer. The corresponding Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for this offer is 2.10%. The Special Rate will be applied to the enrolled savings account for a period of 12 months, starting on the date the account is enrolled in the offer. However, for any day during that 12 month period that the daily account balance is less than the $25,000 minimum, the Special Rate will not apply and the interest rate will revert to the standard interest rate applicable to your Platinum Savings account. As of 12/10/2018, the standard interest rate and APY for a Platinum Savings account in CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, MD, NJ, NY, SC and VA with an account balance of $0.01 to $99,999.99 is 0.03% (0.03% APY) and with an account balance of $100,000 and above is 0.05% (0.05% APY). Each tier shown reflects the current minimum daily collected balance required to obtain the applicable APY. Interest is compounded daily and paid monthly. The amount of interest earned is based on the daily collected balances in the account. Upon the expiration of the 12 month promotional period, standard interest rates apply. Minimum to open a Platinum Savings account is $25. A monthly service fee of $12 applies in any month the account falls below a $3,500 minimum daily balance. Fees may reduce earnings. Interest rates are variable and subject to change without notice. Wells Fargo may limit the amount you deposit to a Platinum Savings account to an aggregate of $1 million. Offer not available to Private Banking, Wealth, Business Banking or Wholesale customers. 2. Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is effective for accounts opened between 01/21/2019 and 03/22/2019. The 11-month New Dollar CD special requires a minimum of $25,000 brought to Wells Fargo from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank N.A., or its affiliates to earn the advertised APY. Public Funds and Wholesale accounts are not eligible for this offer. APY assumes interest remains on deposit until maturity. Interest is compounded daily. Payment of interest on CDs is based on term: For terms less than 12 months (365 days), interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or at maturity (the end of the term). For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. A fee for early withdrawal will be imposed and could reduce earnings on this account. Special Rates are applicable to the initial term of the CD only. At maturity, the Special Rate CD will automatically renew for a term of 6 months, at the interest rate and APY in effect for CDs on renewal date not subject to a Special Rate, unless the Bank has notified you otherwise. Due to the new money requirement, accounts may only be opened at your local branch. Wells Fargo reserves the right to modify or discontinue the offer at any time without notice. Offer cannot be combined with any other consumer deposit offer. Minimum new money deposit requirement of at least $25,000 is for this offer only and cannot be transferred to another account to qualify for any other consumer deposit offer. If you wish to take advantage of another consumer deposit offer requiring a minimum new money deposit, you will be required to do so with another new money deposit as stated in the offer requirements and qualifications. Offer cannot be reproduced, purchased, sold, transferred, or traded. 3. The Portfolio by Wells Fargo program has a $30 monthly service fee, which can be avoided when you have one of the following qualifying balances: $25,000 or more in qualifying linked bank deposit accounts (checking, savings, CDs, FDIC-insured IRAs) or $50,000 or more in any combination of qualifying linked banking, brokerage (available through Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC) and credit balances (including 10% of mortgage balances, certain mortgages not eligible). If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the bonus interest rate on all eligible savings accounts, and discounts or fee waivers on other products and services, will discontinue and revert to the Bank’s then-current applicable rate or fee. For bonus interest rates on time accounts, this change will occur upon renewal. If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the remaining unlinked Wells Fargo Portfolio Checking or Wells Fargo Prime Checking account will be converted to another checking product or closed.

Scout Troop 27 soars at iFly Skydiving Boy Scout Troop 27 of Durham had a once in a lifetime experience at the IFLY indoor skydiving center in Yonkers, N.Y. recently. The young people on the trip included Savino Civitillo, Cameron Cook, Andrew Fazzone-Chettiar, Makayla Fazzone-Chettiar, Andrew Foster, Quinn Kursawe, Evan Whittaker and Teagan Whittaker. When the scouts arrived at the IFLY center they got to talk with a skydiver and scientist who showed them the different variables that go into determining how to get a perfect skydive. The sky chamber is powered by two 500 horsepower wind turbines that propel the flyer in the air.

For comparison, a 2018 Honda Ridgeline truck has only 280 horsepower. The scouts learned that different body positions can change the surface area of your body, which can make you go higher or lower. After this was over the group went to their next session of flight training where they learned how to properly fly. The scouts were finally ready to go. They suited up in baggy suits and flight helmets and entered the flight chamber. One by one the scouts and adults traveled in to have their one minute of fun. They were assisted by a flight instructor who helped them to stay in the proper

A month of mystery, promise and the unknown I love March. It’s the transition between two worlds – winter and spring – and I love transitions. They hold mystery and promise and the unknown. They keep me

on my toes. March is a whimsical creature, to be sure, and she keeps us guessing. Will she bequeath us with mild, balmy days and gentle breezes and bare-

footin’ and open windows and the casting off of jackets? Will she slam us with more snow than we care to see at this point? Will she send bitter winds to knock at

Letters to the Editor Read the Constitution To the editor: Can the state re-define religion? The 1st Amendment of the United States Constitution begins with "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof ..." Dictionaries frequently provide more than one definition of religion. The worship of a deity, while being the first thing most people assume religion is, is not the only thing religion is.

- 2. A personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs and practices. 3. Archaic: scrupulous conformity: Conscientiousness. 4: A cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith.

cination, clergy signatures for vaccination exemptions, public education, or restricts home school education or demands individual use of any state-sponsored standardized curriculum for home school education.

Dictionary.com - Something someone believes in and follows devotedly; a point or matter of ethics or conscience.

Highly relevant and hotlycontended right now is Senate Bill 874 awaiting passage from the CGA.

Google Dictionary - A pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance.

The Connecticut General Assembly has in the past, and now, proposed legislation that blatantly defies our 1st Amendment rights, which it cannot legally do. (It can only do it illegally, and it can only be applied when no one is challenging its legitimacy.)

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Legislation that requires vac-

SB 874 is unconstitutional and if it's unconstitutional, that means it's not protecting your inherent rights, and that will in one way or another, hurt you as a citizen, cost you money, and restrict your lifestyle. Carolyn Salzano Middlefield

our bones? Only she knows. The rest of us will just have to wait and see. But even if she regales us with more winter than we have seen so far, the good news is that we are headed for the finish line. ‘Ol Man Winter can have his last fling, but we know that we are on the homestretch. We may feel plum worn out by him-battered and bruised and hanging on by a thread, but we know that soon those windows will be thrown wide open and the birds will be serenading us and the shoes will come off (well, for some of us) and the jackets will take their rightful places in the back of the closet. Soon. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel. And if spring’s impending delights do not just tickle our fancy, we have another bonus to look forward to. Yep, those longer days. I think it’s safe to say that we all love them. There could be a foot of snow on the ground, but it takes the sting out of it all if night doesn’t roll around until 7. Longer days take the sting out of everything, I think.

In March I look out at the brown that is my yard, and I see emerald green instead, and wildflowers and bees and dragonflies and butterflies, and my pool up and running. It’s all in my head, of course, but right now that’s good enough. The reality of it draws closer every day. And on the days when winter has had a heavy hand with us, and has been a bit too harsh, I tell myself, and anyone within earshot, that it only makes us appreciate spring all the more. Life is, indeed, all about the contrast. And I wasn’t going to say it, since I don’t want to belabor the point (I’m going to belabor the point) – it’s Birthday Month. Now if that doesn’t put the wind in my sails, I don’t know what does. So yes, I think March is a marvelous month. Snow or sun? Winter or spring? Lion or lamb? Surprise me.

NBA player comes through for the Y

TEAMS IMMORTALIZED

The Northern Middlesex County YMCA has received a $15,000 grant from the Drummond Foundation. The funds received support teen programs including, Andre’s Allstars, a program open to youth over the age of 12 ,which currently provides support to more than 30 participants. NBA player Andre Drummond is the force behind the foundation.

The Coginchaug Regional High School boys outdoor track and field team was recently presented with a banner recognizing its 2018 Shoreline Conference championship last season. The banner will hang in the school gymnasium. From left: Coach Mike Ford, and team members Kevin Ryan, Nicholas Vestergaard, Joe Venables, Anthony Gavrilovic, Spencer Alsup, Evan Hempel, Dan Lipka, Conner Zolnik and Bryce Lipka.

“Giving back to the city of Middletown is something I take pride in,” Drummond said. “Growing up as a kid, I didn’t have an athlete who came into town and help to start programs for my peers and me. The YMCA gave us somewhere to go and work on all of our skills both on and off the court. I give back be-

cause I want the kids of future generations to have better opportunities of doing great things with their life. I encourage kids to challenge themselves each day, and critique their work on and off the court. With focus and hardwork, you can create the unimaginable. I am fortunate enough that I am in the position to give back to a place where it all started. Thank you.” The funding has also provided an opportunity for programming such as basketball skill clinics and S.T.O.R.M.Y Nights (Spend Time Out Relaxing at the Middlesex Y), a program designed to bring middle school kids into the Y for supervised activities on Friday evenings. -- Press Release

Blair said beginners can expect to grow a pumpkin weighing around a couple hundred pounds. Last year, the fair’s biggest pumpkin clocked in at more than 1,700 pounds.

“We just want to help people grow pumpkins, that’s all we want to do. That’s our passion,” Blair said.

For more information and to register, call 203-457-0770.

Potential growers need about 750 square-feet of land to grow one pumpkin.

Blair said each person can decide what their goal is; whether it’s to just get a 100-pound pumpkin to the fair, or grow a nicely shaped one, that’s up to the individual.

“We want to get the new grower involved and give them a good start for doing them so they’re not going to fail the first year,” Blair said, adding that growing giant pumpkins can be difficult and time consuming.

Students must bring their school ID. For more information, call 860-276-6281.

Cleveland said pumpkin growing is an opportunity for kids to try something they normally would never be exposed to, and the process of growing a giant pumpkin builds character strengths like work ethic, time management and patience. It also encourages people just to be outside and be more active, she said.
