Grant will fund new sidewalks on Main Street By Bailey Wright Town Times

The town of Durham has been awarded a $400,000 grant for new sidewalks on Main Street.

The new sidewalk would travel about 1.5 miles up the west side of Main Street from Cozy Corner Restaurant, 5 New Haven Road, to Citizen’s Bank, 376 Main St., Francis said.

Francis said town engineer Brian Curtis is working on a phased construction timeline so the project can be started while the town awaits remaining funding.

The project is estimated to cost $1.2 million. The town is exploring other grants to cover the remaining costs.

Community Connectivity Grant Program, a part of former Governor Dannel P. Malloy’s Let’sGoCT! transportation initiative, with the goal of improving accommodations for bicyclists and pedestrians in urban, suburban and rural community centers.

Team Pumpkin, a group of local growers who share an online network, is planning a seminar this month, and one in April, to recruit new growers to the “sport” they love.

Middlefield grower Lloyd Blair said the goal of the free seminars is to get new people introduced to the sport, to get more pumpkins to the Durham Fair display in September, and build the number of local growers.

“We just really want to encourage people to try something new,” said Chelsea Cleveland, co-coordinator of the Durham Fair Giant Pumpkin exhibit.

“The excitement on the weigh off night is unbelievable,” Blair said. “Even if you don’t have a big pumpkin it’s a good time.”

The first seminar will be held Wednesday, March 20, 2 p.m., at the public safety building on the Durham Fairgrounds and will cover “first time growing fundamentals.” At the same location and time on Sunday, April 28, the
