Torrison Stone named champions, again By Mark Dionne Town Times

Torrison Stone, once again, is king in the Durham Parks and Recreation Men’s Basketball League. On Thursday, April 9 at Strong school, Torrison Stone beat Blackbird Tavern 57-42 to claim the league championship. Torrison Stone led from the start. Blackbird Tavern managed to cut the lead to eight points, 38-30, with under eight minutes left, but Torrison Stone, and especially Adam Poturnicki of Durham, dominated the paint and was too much for Blackbird Tavern. Poturnicki finished with 27 points and received the game ball as MVP. Tyler Gerry, owner of Torrison Stone and Garden, was on hand to watch Members of the Torrison Stone squad pose with family members and the league his team from the stands championship trophy. Ultramarathoner runs in memory of sibling Jessica DaSilva, a resident of Middlefield, recently completed an ultramarathon to help fund a cause very dear to her heart. DaSilva was one of 25 participants to partake in the 100-mile trail run at the NJ Ultra Festival, which was held on March 21. She was one of only nine individuals to finish the race and one of two women to complete the feat. DaSilva ran the event in memory of her step-sister, Cindy Sherwin, who was a triathlete and personal trainer herself.

DaSilva raised more than $40,000 to help build the Cindy Sherwin Memorial playground at New Haven’s West Rock Author’s Academy. An Irish-themed fundraiser will be held Saturday, May 9, noon to 3 p.m., at The Stone House Restaurant in Guilford. A silent auction will be held, coupled with an open bar, live Irish music, and dancing. For more information on DaSilva’s accomplishments, visit her blog, ultrajessruns. blogspot.com.

Budget moves past hearing By Mark Dionne Town Times

At a lengthy public hearing on April 6, the Regional School District 13’s Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools Kathryn Veronesi presented the proposed 2015-2016 school budget and residents took advantage of the opportunity for public comment. After an approximately hour long presentation and 90 minutes of public comment, the BOE returned to a regular meeting and put forward the budget with a net figure of $35,954,697, representing a 2.21 percent increase from the current figure. The BOE did not change the budget from the previous BOE meeting and put it forward for a planned referendum on Tuesday, May 5. All BOE members voted in favor of putting the budget forward, with the exception of Jeremy Renninghoff, who voted nay. Veronesi, BOE chair Kerrie Flanagan, and BOE members Bob Fulton and Anthony Onofreo presented the budget and emphasized the pressures on school districts in what Veronesi termed an “unprecedented” time in education. Fulton pointed out that the increase in expenditures over the last three years has been See School / Page 2

less than 2 percent. According to the presentation, the funds RSD13 receives from the state in Education Cost Sharing has remained almost flat, increasing only 0.29 percent over seven years and putting more pressure on local taxpayers. “The proportion of the school budget supported by ECS is shrinking,” Fulton said. Flanagan outlined the issue of staffing in the proposed budget, which features a net reduction of 4.2 positions and a two-year reduction of 13 po-

erendum, keeping program choice even if it requires a new kindergarten teacher, tracking the budget to school enrollment figures, posture, and cursive handwriting. Flanagan, Veronesi, and Business Manager Ron Melnik fielded most of the questions during public comment. The suggestion that was discussed most when the BOE reconvened came from Bob Yamartino, chair of Middlefield’s Board of Finance. Yamartino noted that state laws, known as Minimum Budget Requirements, restrict the amount RSD13 could eventually cut from the budget should a school building close. MBR withholds state funds on a two-to-one dollar ratio from districts with cuts above a certain threshold. Yamartino suggested that the district control the baseline of the budget and withhold long term projects in anticipation of a year where MBR compels the district to add money to the budget. While acknowledging the potential difficulty MBR rules could present, several BOE members expressed reservations about cutting planned funding with the expectation to fill it in later and the budget was moved forward unchanged.

sitions from 2013-2014. The salary line in the proposed budget increased by 1.51 percent and the benefit line increases by 3.23 percent. Health insurance costs increased by 7 percent and continued to put pressure on the school budget. Flanagan said, “We are doing everything we can, but we can’t buck the trend that is going on across the country.” Two potential additions at Central Office totaling 1.8 positions, a technology support specialist and a human resource and business specialist, that were discusses in detail at previous BOE meetings were referenced. Flanagan called their responsibilities crucial and noted the staffing trend was still downward. Of the technology support specialist, Flanagan said that technology initiatives, such as CRHS’ Chrome-book initiative, were not a matter of rolling out computers and walking away. Approximately 35 people listened to the presentation, with the audience split roughly between school administration and teachers, town officials, and regular citizens. IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE ASSESSOR’S OFFICE The assessor’s office will mail income and expense statements to owners of commercial and industrial real estate next month in preparation for the 2015 Grand List revaluation. Pursuant to CGS Sec. 12-63c, these forms are mailed annually by April15 and are due back to the assessor’s office by June 1. The assessor will use the information received to develop valuation methodology for commercial and industrial real estate assessments in the next revaluation. The income information requested is essentially rent, although miscellaneous income, such as laundry income in an apartment complex, may also be relevant. Business income, such as sales of manufactured goods or retail income is not requested and is generally not relevant to the valuation of the real estate. Expense information requested includes utilities costs, insurance premiums, snow plowing, garbage collection, and legal and advertising expenses- all expenses necessary to support the rent for the real estate. Expense information requested does not include business expenses, such as retail employee salaries or inventory purchases- expenses that are not generally relevant to the valuation of the real estate. CGS Sec.12-63c requires owners of rental real estate to submit this information or incur a 10% assessment penalty. Although owners of commercial property whose space is primarily owner-occupied may not be subject to the assessment penalty, to avoid future requests, the assessor’s office asks that such owners simply return the form with the “owner-occupied” box checked. Information received is exempt from the Freedom of Information Act and will be treated confidentially. The assessor may grant a 30-day extension to owners who may have difficulty meeting the June 1 deadline. An extension request must be submitted in writing prior to May 1.

This was the sixth year the studio participated in the program. The group earned two gold medals, one silver medal with distinction, and 11 silver medals. Presenting grade one were Kierra Sartor and Regan Dills. Grade three was presented by Fiona Fay, Molly Stoetzle, and Mya Seymour. Catherine Fay, Monica Garbacz and Penelope Wickwire performed grade four. Obituaries Eleanor (Wassell) Seeton

Summer theater

By Christina Dreyfus Special to Town Times

(The writer profiles local women who are using math and science to pursue a variety of careers.) Like many college students, Emily Greenough of Middlefield fluctuated from one career idea to another. Despite this vacillation, or perhaps because it signaled her willingness to explore a variety of possibilities, Greenough eventually wound up with a fun and lucrative career in robotics at Bristol-Myers Squibb in Wallingford. Greenough began her freshman year at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield considering a major in media studies and journalism, but soon became disillusioned when she realized the amount of politics involved in those professions. A fan of math since middle school, she decided to turn to the land of concrete answers, and declared a mathematics concentration at the end of her freshman year. Unfortunately, her sophomore year found her unhappy with the limitations of the program. “I didn’t want to be crunching numbers all day, so I thought I’d try to pur-

sue optometry,” she said of a field she’d always been interested in due to eye problems as a child. Optometry also didn’t pan out – Greenough can no longer remember the reason – but before she had decided against it, the prerequisites led her to take Biology 101, where a wonderful professor inspired her. “The teacher was awesome and I thought, I’ve always been into environmental stuff. Let me get through the bio degree and maybe I can get a [graduate] degree in environmental engineering,” Greenough said. A chemistry major boyfriend simultaneously sparked an interest in chemistry, especially as it related to math and the environment. By her senior year at

Sacred Heart, Greenough had enough credits to graduate with a biology concentration and mathematics and chemistry minors. When she attended a career fair her senior year, recruiters from Bristol-Myers Squibb in Wallingford made sure to See Profile / Page 20

I’m big in Nigeria The servant has become the master. I admit it – my computer is the boss of me. I don’t dare slink away from it for very long, for it thinks it great fun to pile up a ridiculous number of messages if I do. One time when I was in Sweden visiting my son, and had the audacity to abandon it for 10 days, I came home to, between spam and my inbox, 900 messages. 900! Vindictive thing, isn’t it? I am reminded of the scene from “Fatal Attraction”, where Glenn Close says to Michael Douglas, “I will not be ignored.” At least there were no rabbits involved. Let me share with you just a bit of what awaits me every morning. My computer, that sly fox, would have me believe I am all the rage. Apparently everyone in Nigeria wants to be my friend. I hear from them all the time, the dears. And they are so sweet to have my best interests at heart, promising me riches galore if I will just send them some money to get the ball rolling. I must stop in sometime when I’m in the neighborhood, to thank them for caring about me so. Many of my friends are being mugged in London, and I am beginning to think it is not an American-friendly city, and it will not be on my itinerary the next time I am jet-setting around the world. I am sorry that I cannot send my comrades the money they need to keep body and soul together. Just try to relax and enjoy your extended stay in London, I tell them. Try to stay out of the rain. Alright, let me take a moment to set the record straight. “Diana” may seem like a man’s name to some of you, but I assure you it’s not. So I no longer need to be

apprised of products that speak to body parts that I do not possess. I am grateful, however, for the concern as to whether or not I am whooping it up in the bedroom. With all the job offers I get it would seem that my immeasurable skills and talents are all a buzz. And these aren’t just ordinary jobs. Oh, no. I am promised a kingdom, with very little work involved. I think my computer is in cahoots with these dream weavers, as I am told that if I sit at it for no more than two hours a week, doing what is asked of me, I will be starring on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. Perhaps I should take one of these jobs, so that I can help out my friends who are stuck in London. Oh, and here’s the cherry on the hot fudge sundae. President Obama takes time out of his busy schedule to sit down and write to me. I was not aware that he knew anything about me. He must vie for my attention, though, as Robert Redford also seems to have me in his sights. I’m thinking of having a tea party for just the three of us. Well, I’ve got to run. My computer is cracking that whip, and those messages aren’t going to read themselves. Diana Carr, a resident of Durham, is a certified life coach who was trained by Martha Beck. Nutrition program The Children’s Nutrition Program is a confidential supplemental nutrition program for children in Region 13 schools. Sponsored by Durham Middlefield Youth and Family Services and Region 13, through food donation and volunteer efforts, the program provides a backpack filled with non-perishable food items for eligible school aged children. Durham Middlefield Youth and Family Services and CRHS Helping Hands Club work together to collect food items, organize, and deliver backpacks filled with non-perishable

food items to participating students. The backpacks are sent home each Thursday, November through June, with extra items sent home during school vacations. A donation of $160 supports the Backpack Nutrition program for a child for the school year. Items in need include cereal, easy macaroni and cheese, pancake mix with syrup, pasta, canned ravioli, applesauce cups. Donations can be dropped off at Durham Middlefield Youth and Family Services, 405 Main St., Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Registrar updating records The Registrars of Voters for Durham have begun the annual canvass of citizens registered to vote in town. Every year, the registrars review records to ensure all registered citizens’ information is accurate and current. Citizens that receive a notice from the registrars should return the form by May 1.

Opinion There’s no place like home for aliens and SpongeBob By Tanya Feke M.D. L. Frank Baum said it best in The Wizard of Oz – “There’s no place like home.” We may not feel this way all the time, but it is true. There may be times when we feel desperate to escape from everyday life, i.e. from the weather (I am looking at you, New England winter in spring!), work, or any number of responsibilities. After all, who couldn’t use a little rest and relaxation? Despite the needed time away though, it usually feels good to come home to our families, our friends, and our warm beds, if not the reasons we left in the first place. The “feel good at home” mantra has come to theaters this winter/spring with two popular releases. SpongeBob Squarepants and Patrick Star hit the deck as 3D super heroes with their second animated feature in 16 years. Antonio Banderas joins the cast as a feisty human pirate who wants to steal the Krabby Patty formula as much as long-term baddie Plankton. Kids will cheer their favorite animated sea creatures when they jump from their sea home and finally get out of

water to catch the dastardly thief. Somehow the magic of the cartoon is lost amid the animated updates. Though the CGI is meant to be cool and fresh, I yearned for SpongeBob’s pineapple home back in the underwater town of Bikini Bottom. The best part of the story occurred underwater, and underwater is where SpongeBob is meant to stay. The true joy of SpongeBob is not that he needs to be modernized but in the very fact that we love him for his simplicity and sheer goofiness. Here, less is definitely more. Home, on the other hand, is an unexpected gem. When colorful aliens called Boovs fly across the galaxy to escape the “evil” Gorg, they find themselves a new planet to call home, Earth. The problem is they transplant all humans to Australia and separate young heroine Gratuity “Tip” Tucci (Rhianna) from her mother. You should never separate a child from their mother, and one mischievous little Boov, Oh (Jim Parsons), learns that the hard way. Oh wears his emotions like the rest of his species – on his skin. Boovs literally change colors to show their emotions. But while he is

the same, he is also different. Though he has been brought up on the ethic of “always run away from your problems” and “never take any risks,” his relationship with Tip teaches him that there is more to life than meets the eye, even in how he perceives the Gorg. Life is about taking risks, and Home becomes the heartfelt adventure of a lifetime.

Typically she uses spinach, blueberries, pineapples, Greek yogurt, water or almond milk. The juice sometimes serves as her breakfast if she’s busy, McEvoy said. Like McEvoy, Rich Hamel of Meriden also uses homemade juices as an added health benefit. Almond milk, carrots, zucchini, an apple, banana and scoop of whey protein go in Hamel’s juice. “(I) chop it all up in a blender and then put the blender on juice to get liquefied,” Hamel said. “Tastes so good and (it’s) a good way to get your veggies and fruit with protein.”

Aside from juicing, some people turn to protein shakes as another addition to a meal or a meal supplement. Avid gym users or workout enthusiasts often use protein shakes after exercising to help replenish muscles. “Shakes are really good for snacks or after your workout,” said Lori-Ann Marchese, a Berlin resident and owner of Body Construct training gym in New Britain. “A lot of people don’t have enough time to eat in the morning, so a shake would be great to have.” Shakes should typically be consumed within the first few minutes after a workout, Marchese said. She suggests clients use them after a workout to feed their muscles. Marchese offers her own line of protein shakes with flavors including vanilla pudding, chocolate cake batter, birthday cake, and peanut butter cup. The Edge Fitness Club

Dedication, focus and a few missing teeth – that’s what it takes to be a serious junior hockey player. Joseph D’Agostino of Middlefield, a seventh grade student at The Independent Day School, nails all three categories. D’Agostino plays defense for the New England Junior Falcons from Enfield and Hockey Essentials for the spring tournament team. Considered a play-maker for his teams, D’Agostino made at least one assist in every game last year. For 10 weeks this past winter, he and his father drove three hours every Wednesday to practice with the Adirondack Junior Wings in Albany, New York. In order to maintain his grades, the youngster completed his schoolwork in the car. “It wasn’t very easy, but you find a way to get your work done. Since IDS is a small school, I’m able to get more personal attention from my teachers, too. My schoolwork at IDS and hockey are my top priorities,” D’Agostino said. “I love everything about hockey – the fast pace, the physicalness of it. Plus it

Blumenthal armed services committee. “This computer system is hugely complex. Algorithms in development will allow aircraft to fly with more speed and accuracy than a human is capable of. Blumenthal has been told that by the time the planes are finished, “the dumbest part of the plane will be the pilot. The senator thinks increasing automation will create broad challenges in nearly all public sectors, including manufacturing, finance, and

education. “How do we allocate income so there is some fairness and so our economy moves forward? One of the central challenges of our time is to increase mobility and eliminate wage stagnation, he said, something Blumenthal thinks is vital “for the health of our democracy. On income inequality, Blumenthal believes the problem lies not in that inequality exists, but that there is a lack of mobility and opportunity for those of lower income. “Peo-

ple are never going to have exactly the same income, the senator said, but increasingly “people can’t go from low income backgrounds to higher incomes. He also thinks the “vastness of the present disparities are unhealthy. He supports efforts to address income inequality through improving education and improving the government’s commitment to housing assistance and public transportation. “We need to provide more opportunity.

Blumenthal thinks “commonsense steps can be taken to address problems while still understanding that “we can’t put kids in a cocoon. The game of football will always involve some injuries. It’s a contact sport. Blumenthal thinks there has been a “sea change on the issue of concussions, “first because we have seen the consequences for some of these players, and second because parents are seeing the consequences for their kids. When attending a forum of high school parents, Blumenthal was surprised to see a lot of fathers supporting rule changes about how players can hit each other, changes in equipment, and improved medical treatment. “You would think dads would just say to suck it up, but they are saying that they have kids that have been out of school for two months after a concussion. With self-driving vehicles on the roads in Nevada and California, some two million people employed in transportation may be on the brink of rapidly losing their jobs. Blumenthal thinks the issue of automation is “a much broader issue than just transportation. How are we going to address the issue of robotics and artificial intelligence more and more supplanting the human workforce? It is both a challenge and an opportunity. New laws will be required to allow robot cars onto roads and highways. Although Blumenthal’s “initial reaction is that he isn’t sure he wants to share the highway with a robot car, he spends a lot of time on the road in bad weather and has experienced

“some fairly dangerous and anxiety producing moments on the roads because other drivers have been careless and distracted. I think to myself, well, maybe this new technology can work. And if it works it may produce better safety, and it will relieve those drivers of hours spent behind the wheel sitting in traffic. Blumenthal is personally familiar with the technological advances in self-flying planes as a member of the

She, on the other hand, was naturally drawn to activities like math, dancing, music, and cross-country. An avid clarinetist, Greenough once considered making a career out of it, but recognized that she had no interest in teaching – a common way for musicians to pay the bills after graduation. Greenough was in junior high when she realized she loved math. The structure of it, and a talented teacher who was willing to provide extra help to students after school, solidified her interest. Sadly, it was another teacher, this time in high school, whose harmful influence led her to believe she was uninterested in biology. Greenough mother did not have a formal college degree, but for most of her children’s early years she worked as a pharmacy technician who was very comfortable working with numbers. Currently, she conducts software testing for CareMark, a subsidiary of CVS – another example of how experience and learning on the job can lead to advancement. Greenough’s father was a banker who had started off with a teaching degree in science. While no special effort was made to encourage an interest in math or science at home, both parents expected their children to attend college. Greenough’s experience demonstrates that trying a variety of classes and considering various careers can be beneficial. “It’s okay to try things and see where you land,” she said. “A lot of people have a strict plan, but for me it wasn’t like that. I stumbled onto this career and found a niche.” And it goes without saying that working hard and maintaining an admirable GPA in that assortment of classes doesn’t hurt, either.
