Different day and venue for Class of 2015 By Mark Dionne

Town Times

The powerful thunderstorm that took down trees, blocked roads, and left the entire town of Durham without power took place on Tuesday, June 23, the same day as Coginchaug Regional High School Class of 2015’s scheduled graduation ceremony. Using social media and the emergency notification systems, administrators canceled the ceremony scheduled for the Julian Thayer Auditorium, the traditional location, and went searching for an alternative place and time. One day later, on June 24, under a beautifully clear sky, the CRHS Class of 2015 graduated on Wesleyan University’s Andrus Field in Middletown. Multiple speakers made well-received jokes about the storm and the switch. Valedictorian Tyler McDonald thanked the storm for giving him time to finish his speech. CRHS principal Brian Falcone said of the seniors, “Since the Washington, D.C. trip, they’ve been bothering me about an outdoor graduation.” Standing on the marble steps used for Wesleyan’s

Most students spend a lot more money to get a diploma in this setting. While detailing the accomplishments of the Class of 2015, Falcone noted that five members of the class will be joining some form of military service and asked them to stand and be recognized. In

Reconfigured at Wesleyan, the five students were facing the podium instead of the audience. “Turn around, guys,” Falcone told the students so they could witness their standing ovation. The ceremony contained the usual elements, just relocated. The Brass Choir played

and the senior class provided two performances. Natalie Charette played “Arabesque #1” by Claude Debussy on piano and senior members of the show choir sang “You Raise Me Up.” Some of the speakers cut their prepared remarks short and the program was slightly juggled to make sure the outdoor ceremony concluded before sunset. Otherwise,

the ceremony appeared like it was planned for that time and venue. Class salutatorian Nathaniel Weir noted that many speakers used a gimmick and got his – juggling – out of the way early. contributed and continues to do so. In December, 2014, Superintendent of Schools Kathryn Veronesi presented Smith with the Superintendent’s Award and cited her community work as part of the reason. Presenting the award, Veronesi said, “Her kindness and dedication to her peers and community have sparked her interest in pursuing a career in social work. Erin is an all around role model, which makes her the perfect choice

for this year’s award.” The project, Smith said, will have other benefits as well. “Another goal I have in doing this project is raising community awareness regarding the camp. I do not think people realize what a gem we have right in our backyard. Not only does camp serve individuals with disabilities, it provides volunteer opportunities to teenagers looking for a great way to serve the community and, eventually, job opportunities for older teenagers.”

Erin Smith, a senior at Coginchaug Regional High School, devoted her senior year Independent WISE project to helping Camp Nerden in Middlefield. For the past 50 years, Camp Nerden has served campers with disabilities. For the past two summers, Smith has worked as a lifeguard at the camp’s pool, where she witnessed its state of disrepair. “Because I want to make Camp Nerden’s 50th anniversary as special as possible, I decided to take on an independent senior project to assist camp in raising the funds to replace the pool,” Smith wrote in the Town Times. Using tools such as a Go Fund Me page, Smith set a goal of $10,000. At an April presentation at CRHS, she had already raised and donated $7,400 to the pool repair. Since then, Smith has exceeded her goal with donations from individuals, civic organizations, and businesses. “Every dollar received will be directly put towards the cost of renovating the pool,” Smith wrote in an e-mail, and thanked everyone who

The town of Durham has a new state trooper. On the job at the end of June, Trooper First Class Larry Morello will serve as Durham’s single state trooper. The position was held by State Trooper Peter DiGioia, now retired, who had been assigned to Durham for 11 years. According to a town press release, Morello has ties to the area as a graduate of Xavier High School. After Xavier, Morello graduated from Manchester Community College with a degree in Criminal Justice, the Connecticut State Police Academy, and the Connecticut Municipal Police Academy. Morello said, “I am extremely excited with my new assignment as the Durham resident trooper. It has been a career goal of mine to become the resident trooper in Durham as I have worked the area for several years as patrol trooper and have developed great relationships with many people who live and

work in town. I very much look forward to being a resource for people in town and to be in a position where I can really help people when they need it while doing my best to keep Durham safe.” Morello has been a Connecticut state trooper for nine years, assigned to Troop F in Westbrook and to Hartford for the Safe Streets Hartford Task Force. In 2008 Morello was awarded a Unit Citation and, in 2012, a Connecticut State Police Medal for Life Saving and one for Outstanding Police Service. Before his work for the state police, Morello was a police officer for the town of South Windsor and with the State Capitol Police Department. Durham First Selectman Laura Francis said, “I welcome Trooper Morello to the Town of Durham. He has the experience to work with our public safety team and address pressing areas of concern in our community.” Police coverage has been a focus of both Durham and Middlefield in recent months. Francis and Superintendent of Schools Kathryn Veronesi attempted to add a trooper to the school system that would also be partially shared with Durham, but that position was cut from the budget after objections. In addition to the retirement of Durham’s long time trooper, Middlefield’s long time trooper, Scott Halligan, was suspended after charges of falsifying a report. Another regular presence locally, Sgt. Sal Calvo of Troop F, recently retired. State Trooper Timothy Kendrick, who had been serving Durham for about a year during the search, will return to serve as a trooper for Troop F. Francis said, “I want to thank Trooper Timothy Kendrick for his service as temporary resident state trooper. He provided quality police work during our transition.” Follow us on Twitter: @TheTownTimes

This recent rendezvous with the dark left me in no better mood than the other times. The forces of nature need to understand a thing or two. They need to take into account just how much I love watching TV in the evenings. They need to know how much I adore my comedies. Don’t they hear the raucous laughter coming from my abode? Now why would they want to put a stop to that? And need I remind them how much I also adore food, especially when eaten in front of the TV during my bouts of raucous laughter? As the hours without electricity tick by, my thoughts go to the contents of my refrigerator. Throwing out food is my least favorite activity in the world, so I am constantly running a ticker tape in my head of what gets to stay and what is going to be compost. Alright, the veggies should survive. What about the salad dressing? There’s no dairy in it, so maybe it can squeak by. How about the tempeh, which had plans for meeting up with my pasta in the near future? I decide I will not throw anything out just yet, and will rely on the ol’ sniff test when we come out the other side of this. Still, I have visions of violent retching over the toilet, due to the worst case of food poisoning in the history of mankind. The nights are the worst. When I was a kid and the

It takes up every one of my thoughts. I am constantly turning on a light switch in the hope that this time it will produce the desired result. I incessantly call the power company so that their recording can apprise me of the estimated time of “lights on.” This really only serves to tease

me, it gets my hopes up so. I get a time, and my eyes stay glued to the clock, waiting for that magic moment when the light switch finally does my bidding. And then the appointed hour arrives, and nada. So I call the recording again and get a new time. And the same thing happens. More calls, more rescheduled estimated times. It’s heartbreaking, really. This last time, fearing my mental health was at stake, I finally realized I needed to get off this hamster wheel. The power will come on when it comes on, I told myself, and I resigned myself

23AndMe can’t tell me much about how my genes impact my health – but they can give me a downloadable genome in a text file. I was able to pass this text file to a free web app offered by InterpretToMe. After agreeing to a warning that the information I discovered was “for educational and research purposes only,” I finally had what I wanted to know. Many of the results didn’t surprise me – the analysis of my genes nailed my nearsightedness, and many of the diseases that showed up as “increased risk” from my genes are things my older family members have had. I found out I have an increased risk for half a dozen stomach conditions, but I was already eating a very restricted diet for my gut, so my life didn’t turn upside-down. It could have if I learned I had a rare genetic disease like Huntington’s – all without ever speaking to a doctor. That sort of diagnosis

can be extremely upsetting, and could be even worse without a doctor to explain what it means. What if someone harmed themselves after such a diagnosis, when a doctor may have been able to help them understand it better? But should a doctor stand between you and information about your genes? I don’t know. The secret that makes the 23andMe genetic test affordable is that it is performed not by a human in a lab coat, but by a computer chip. If you wear glasses, give “EyeNetra” a quick web search – another company is developing a device that attaches to a smartphone to give a fast, accurate glasses prescription. Should an optician stand between you and this technology? As computers get better and better at diagnosing diseases, we’re going to have to ask ourselves what the roles of doctors should be in the new century.

Take advantage of the stronger dollar in Europe For the first time in over a decade, the U.S. dollar is approaching a 1:1 ratio with the euro. That means American travelers can expect their vacation budgets to go further in the 19 countries operating on the euro currency. Airfare to Europe has also fallen, making this summer an ideal time to cross the Atlantic. Health Lose weight without counting calories By Jane Grant If you think that a calorie is a calorie – and it doesn’t matter whether they come from cookies or carrots – then it’s time to rethink what you’re thinking about calories. Contrary to what you

may have heard, all calories are not created equal. Believing that you’ll lose weight simply by counting them or cutting them will likely leave you hungry, irritable, malnourished and frustrated when you end up not much lighter than you were at

ries from nutrient-rich foods versus nutritionally-deficient foods such as processed or refined carbs will have different effects on the body. Healthy, nutrient-rich foods will enable your brain to signal your belly that it’s full, help maintain stable blood sugar levels, and minimize cravings. Nutrient-poor foods will have the opposite effect: spiking insulin levels, causing cravings, diminishing satiety signals and encouraging you to overeat. Therefore, eating mostly nutrient dense foods will help to keep your weight in check naturally; no calorie counting required. 3. Nutrients matter more - Tracking every calorie that goes in your mouth may give you a feeling of control but it doesn’t mean you’re getting enough of the nutrients your body needs. If your diet consists mostly of portion-controlled, “diet” microwaveable meals and other highly processed items, you’re eating a poor excuse for food. This type of “food” is loaded with chemicals, GMOs, allergenic and inflammatory ingredients, and it doesn’t provide enough protein, fiber, good fats or even volume to make you feel satisfied. You end up hungry, unable to focus, and malnourished; possibly setting you up for chronic illness down the line. Don’t be fooled by the calorie count. Think nutrition instead. 4. Eat the right stuff - To control your cravings and help reduce your appetite with little effort, all you need to do is feed yourself real food. First, focus on fats and oils.
