On June 2, the proposed school budget for the 20152016 year passed at referendum by a combined unofficial vote of 842-590, a 252-vote margin. The $35,604,297 budget contains a net 1.21 percent increase over the current school year’s budget. “The positive outcome of tonight’s vote is affirmation that there is support for what we are doing on behalf of the students in Regional School District 13,” Superintendent of Schools Kathryn Veronesi said in a statement. On May 5, voters rejected a proposed budget with a 2.21 percent increase by a 30-vote See Budget / Page 2

We visited the Gettysburg Museum and Visitors Center, which features a Cyclorama, a 360-degree painting, of the Battle of Gettysburg, and completed the afternoon with a tour of the Eisenhower Estate. On Friday, we completed the Historic Downtown Gettysburg hike, a 4.8-mile hike through the town. We also completed the Billy Yank trail, a 10.1-mile hike, circumnavigating the battlefield. This hike visited sites such as the Wheatfield, the Peach Orchard, Little Round Top, and Pickett’s Charge, the charge that ended the Battle of Gettysburg. We also visited the Pennsylvania monument, the largest monument in Gettysburg. On Sunday, we did the Johnny Reb Trail, a four-mile hike, visiting Cemetery Hill, Barlow’s Knoll, and other important sites. In addition, we visited the Soldier’s National Cemetery to pay our respects to the soldiers that died in Gettysburg. Everyone in the troop enjoyed the trip and can’t wait to go back! — Submitted by Alex Infeld

Opinion

Letters to the Editor Beware the P.C. police To the editor: I’ve read that both the Town of Durham and the illustrious Ted Kennedy Jr. are planning to ban the use of Roundup to kill weeds alongside our roadways. That begs the question, “you ever hear of a Farmall tractor and a sickle bar to lay the hay and weeds down neatly on the side of the road?” Those days are gone, but the obsession with bans on useful pesticides is a politically correct joke. The reason for that is my generation is afraid of death, and any little thing that is known to cause cancer – which is called life – must be banned, and with the same old mantra that it is “for the children.” I’d rather see the use of good old D.D.T than a million people dying of ma-

laria, children included. I’d rather see people eat too, and not starve to death, and feed the world with the reasonable use of pesticides in agriculture. The politically correct crowd is nuts. They fear of death with all of deaths’ many causes because they don’t believe in a higher authority other than themselves. Hey, you’re going to die. Something is going to get you. The odds are it won’t be Roundup, unless you’re stupid enough to drink a gallon of it, in which case it would only be natural selection. But I will say that if you have been a smoker for 30 years, science has proven that if you quit now you will suffer for five more minutes on the respirator at the end of your life. Grow up. Mark J. Czaja Middlefield

How to avoid weight Family caregiver series planned gain over weekends By Jane Grant Do you find that you eat really well all week long and then get completely off track from Friday through Sunday? If so, you’re not alone. Weight gain from Friday through Sunday is a real thing. A recent study from Cornell University found that most of us gain weight on Saturday and Sunday, thanks to weekend socializing and indulgences. Weight fluctuations are normal, a pound or two up or down, here or there, is absolutely normal. But for many, the shock and horror of what the scale says on Monday morning is likely due to what was eaten since Friday. But it doesn’t have to be this way. If you want to achieve and

maintain a healthy weight, getting a handle on your weekend eating habits is essential. Here are a few tips to help you put a healthy spin on the weekends while still enjoying yourself. Weekend weight gainer: Eating to unwind. It’s been a long intense week, and you feel that you deserve to eat extra (fatty, sugary) food as a way to decompress. You use food to reward yourself for putting up with your killer commute, incompetent co-workers, demanding boss, or whatever stressful scenario you encountered during the week. Solution: Relaxation is vital to good health, but using weekend diet indul-

Schools BOE wrestles with presenting Korn decision

WOMEN’S DAY

By Mark Dionne Town Times

PRESENTED BY

At its regular meeting on May 27, the Board of Education discussed publicly presenting the factors that put the BOE on the verge of recommending the closure of Korn Elementary School after the 2015-2016 school year and the timing of that decision. A report from the BOE’s Ut i l i za t i o n Co m m i tte e, which will recommend moving RSD13 from six to four schools, has not yet been released to the public and the full board has yet to officially accept or endorse it. That report also will recommend closing Korn as an early first step to a full reconfiguration and a board endorsement of that move could come before the summer. Chair of the Utilization

Committee and BOE member Bob Fulton said that since the enrollment decline first hits the elementary schools, “it became rather obvious to us that rather than to wait ... it would be appropriate and prudent to deal with the elementary portion of it first ... and then continue on with the larger response.” The board decided to amend the report before officially accepting it, likely at the June 10 meeting. The title of the report will be changed and an introductory paragraph will be added to stress its interim nature. The board also sought to schedule a public presentation in June. BOE member Nancy Boyle, expressing a sentiment shared by multiple members, worried that the public did not have the “big picture.”

Eighth grade students from Strong Middle School’s red team gathered on the soccer field May 28 to use model rockets as part of their studies on the laws of physics. “One of the units we do is forces and motion and so we learned about Newton’s Laws and they’re basically using rocketry and collecting data and applying what they learned about Newton’s Laws,” said teacher Maura Broggi who directed the project with help from volunteer rocketry hobbyists. Flanagan said, “We don’t have numbers but it’s very clear ... it [keeping six schools] is detracting from our ability to provide for the academic requirements of our students.” With so many moving parts, Flanagan said, the board would have to endorse a direction to fully study the ramifications. The next BOE meeting is Wednesday, June 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Brewster school. As of press time, no date was set for a June presentation.

Weekend weight gainer: Alcohol. The extra glass of wine at dinner or cocktail at a party can pack a caloric punch. A 12 ounce beer is 150 calories, light beer is about 100, a shot of a distilled spirits has 80 calories and four ounces of wine has around 100 calories. Solution: Allow yourself no more than two drinks on each weekend night and be conscious that alcohol can stimulate your appetite and decrease your inhibitions about eating more than you otherwise might. When you drink, go for light beers and distilled spirits with seltzer or diet soda. And be sure to drink plenty of water to stay well hydrated.

Gail Kaczenski MIDDLEFIELD — Gail Kaczenski, of Middlefield, became our Angel on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born a New Year’s baby in 1950, and was special ever since. Prior to her retirement just this year, Gail was employed by Kuhn, Employment Opportunities, Inc. She worked in the cafeteria at Bob’s Stores Warehouse in Meriden where she had two very dear friends that got her involved in the Special Olympics Games and Ceremonies. Gail loved to volunteer whenever she could, at the yearly flower sale at the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Deptartment and the Levi Coe Library Book sale to name a few. She could been seen marching or riding in the MVFD truck in parades, walking to the Post Office on a daily basis, playing bocce at the Senior Center, hanging out with the Feretti’s or out tagsaling on Saturday mornings. Gail was excited to be with her friends at Respite visits, along with the outings and activities with the MARC group. Gail had so many special people that touch and enlightened her life. She will be greatly missed. Gail is survived by four sisters, Barbara Schiffert, Janet Garbonola, Linda

On Sunday, May 31, Mark Albin, pictured, and other volunteers ran a charity dog wash at the Durham Public Library. Some 70 dogs came through the “spa” of bathing tubs and nail clipping tables. The fundraiser benefited Team Melissa, participating in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life on Saturday, June 20. Team Melissa is dedicated to the memory of Melissa Albin, former children’s librarian at Durham Public Library. | Mark Dionne / Town Times
