Durham Library issues reading challenge By Mark Dionne Town Times
The Durham Public Library is in the middle of its summer reading program, which features an attempt to get the community to log 10,000 hours of reading. “We challenged the town to read for a total of 10,000 hours between June 29 and Aug. 8,” said Durham Public Library Director Trish Connolly. New mural for Crowd comes out for ‘Into the Woods, Jr.’ Middlefield building By Mark Dionne Town Times
The mural on the side of the building at the corner of Strickland Road and Route 157 is being repainted, but will keep its environmental theme. Jen Huddleston, who is in charge of the new mural, said that the old one, which she See Mural / Page 4
A cast of 31 from Durham and Middlefield performed the show “Into the Woods, Jr.” at the Middlefield Community Center on July 17 and 18. The Stephen Sondheim musical, directed by Julia Kannam of Durham and featuring a mash up of different fairy tales, was the culmination of DMYFS/PaperHouse’s 2015 Summer Stock Theater program. The cast worked on the show for two weeks of full-day rehearsals. Two of the three shows sold out available seats, sending organizers scrambling for additional chairs in the Community Center. Sentencing reform passed by General Assembly By Charles Kreutzkamp
had bipartisan support from Sen. Len Fasano (R-North Haven, Durham) who was During a special session one of the cosponsors on a June 29, the Connecticut modified bill. The bill makes changes General Assembly passed a sentencing reform bill titled to criminal prosecution of An Act Concerning a Sec- drug offenders, including reducing the penalty for ond Chance Society. The bill, supported by f irst-time offenders to a Gov. Dannel Malloy (D), misdemeanor. Town Times
CG A Ho u s e M a j o r i ty Leader Joe Aresimowicz (D-B erlin, Southington) told Town Times he thinks that support for sentencing reform has been building for many years, noting that many people are in jail for nonviolent drug offenses. He said the bill will “make sure those charged with
crimes are treated in a more appropriate manner.” Aresimowicz called the bill a “good first step,” and said that he will be monitoring the impact of it over the coming years. Fasano explained in public hearing testimony that he supported provisions to change possession of small
nity into a single book the way the popular “One Town, One Book” events do. “This way you can participate and you can read anything you want,” Connolly said. Ten thousand was picked as a round number, “not too big, not too small,” and achievable. By the end of the program’s second week, 1,316 registered readers amassed 3,156 hours reading with 209 children, 969 teenagers, and 138 adults logging hours. Registration remains open throughout the program. Connolly expects to get “way past” 10,000 hours because people can read what they want – fiction, non-fiction, magazines, on-line articles, and even reading for work.
“It’s kind of an honor system, nobody’s looking over your shoulder,” Connolly said. Students in RSD13 are required to work with the Wandoo Reader for their school summer reading credit. “We have every kid in the district signed up, but it’s, of course, up to the child to do what they have to do,” Connolly said. “It’s a great cooperative exercise for the community. Any time we can collaborate with the schools, we love it.” The library will put on a finale celebration Saturday, Aug. 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. “We’re having a party on the green. We’re going to have a DJ, a musician, a Frisbee juggler. Food trucks will be there and we’re going to have carnival stations,” Connolly said.

ticipating readers are on track to meet the goal. “In our first week we logged about 1,200 hours total,” said Connolly. “It’s going really well.” Adults are tracking their minutes and hours spent reading with a website called Wandoo Reader off of the library’s website. Every time participants hit an hour of reading, they earn a raffle ticket to use on prizes at the library, “which is our way of luring you into the building,” Connolly said. For adults, the library is giving away a Kindle Fire HDX, dinner for two at Time Out and desert at Dari-Serv, Durham Fair passes, and other themed prizes. Kids participating in the program use an actual game board that they bring and they get “the weekly treat.”
Extra raffle tickets are also being given out for attending library programs. The reading hours of young participants and those who are not computer savvy are logged in at the library. According to a press release, the challenge is “an effort intended to shine a spotlight on Durham as a testament to what small-town community spirit and reading can accomplish.” Connolly said, “We thought it up ourselves. This particular idea, from all of our research, has not been tried in any town in America, which I thought was really amazing.” The regular summer reading program seemed a little tired to the librarians and participation was flat. The librarians saw the 10,000 hour challenge as a way to inject new life into the program without locking the commu-

amounts of illegal drugs to misdemeanors and a pilot program for courts to place offenders in addict rehabilitation programs to keep them out of prison. He said that he did not support “at this time” changes to the Board of Pardons and Parole, saying “more examination and investigation” is needed. Fasano applauded the bill’s passage in a statement. Under the bill, drug possession is a misdemeanor See Reform / Page 13

INTO THE WOODS, JR.
Hood Chorus members Abby Brown, left, and Sofia Stephan also worked as ticket-takers, greeting guests at the door. Cinderella’s Stepmother (Bayla Patel) resorted to some knife work to make the slipper fit the foot of her daughter Lucinda (Julianna Milidantri).
Left: The Witch (Analiese Driscoll) bursts into song and into the home of the Baker and Baker’s Wife at the beginning of DMYFS/PaperHouse’s “Into the Woods, Jr.” Above: The cast, including Dylan Sartor, center, and Jared Munro, right, broke into non-choreographed dancing at one rehearsal. Dylan and Jared played Cinderella and Rapunzel’s princes in “Into the Woods, Jr.” and together sang the comic song “Agony.”

Opinion Letters to the Editor Remarkable effort To the editor: Thank you to all who were involved in rearranging Coginchaug’s recent graduation to take place at Wesleyan University on June 24. Remarkably, the District 13 staff was able to shift the graduation, no doubt on the fly, in short order so that family plans were interrupted as little as possible given the storm that knocked our towns off line on June 23. The ceremony at Wesleyan University went like it had been years in the planning. But, without a doubt it resulted from a lot of scrambling and hard work, borne of a genuine concern for the Coginchaug students and families. So, thank you to everyone involved in the graduation for helping to salvage the day. Jay Huntington Durham Seeking support To the editor: When asked to the run for the Board of Selectmen eight years ago, I was told I would be given an equal vote as every member on any board should have. I therefore always exercised my vote in a fiscally responsible manner, thereby saving the town of Durham hundreds of thousands of dollars without ever jeopardizing our town’s infrastructure or the public safety of our residents — the pillars of what local government should do. Now, because I have often been the lone “no” vote to excess government spending and have not been afraid to push for a more open and transparent local government, a small number of individuals within my own party are attempting to replace me on Durham’s Board of Selectmen. My commitment to the residents of Durham is the same as it has always been. That will not change. Nor will my fiscally responsible approach to town spending or willingness to do and say what is right and ethical, even if it disturbing to some. Our local property taxes in Durham are high enough compared to similar, neighboring communities and having at least one voice of strict fiscal discipline on the board is needed. There will be a Republican Caucus at the Durham Public Library Monday, July 27, at 7 p.m. Please consider attending if you are a registered Republican (or unaffiliated voter willing to switch to Republican before then) as this is where the party-endorsed candidates will be chosen. There will also be a Republican
primary at Korn school from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sept. 16 where the eventual Republican candidate for selectman will be chosen. As always, I can be reached at (860) 349-0003, (860) 8037085 or JohnTSzewczyk@gmail.com. John Szewczyk Durham selectman Unforuntate ending To the editor: I was dismayed to receive an email from the Durham Fair announcing they had booked a music group called Confederate Railroad to headline our fair’s main stage. A visit to the band’s website shows the Confederate battle flag prominently on its logo and its merchandise, which makes me worry what messages this sends about our fair. I understand that the fair’s entertainment committee made this booking months ago, when many of us still accepted the excuse that symbols of the Confederacy were signs of southern pride. However, after the recent murders in Charleston by a racist who proudly used the Confederate battle flag, America has been forced to re-examine that symbolism, and found our understanding of it has changed. The founding documents of the Confederacy state plainly that slavery was the cornerstone of their society and the cause of the Civil War. Durham sent a tenth of its population to stand among the 55,000 Connecticut men who fought against the Confederates. This is why it’s troubling for the fair to book a band who specifically identifies with the Confederacy and not their home state of Georgia or other symbols of the south. In doing so they signal support for the Confederates, whose cause was literally to dissolve the United States, and whose society was based on racial supremacy See Letters / Page 13

Give us a chance, please I think we Nutmeggers get a bad rap. Rumor has it that we are not of a friendly sort. One time when I was talking to a customer service person out west somewhere, he was shocked to learn that, friendly person that I am, I’m from Connecticut. Apparently we have somewhat of a reputation. Maybe it’s just me, but I find us to be a delightful lot. People hold doors for me, and let me pull ahead of them in traffic. When I would take my kayak down to the Madison beach, there was never a shortage of people who would help me get it in and out of my car. If I drop things, people help me pick them up. One time when I was in New Haven and lost, I asked a group of young men for directions, and they hopped in their car and led me to my destination. I have scintillating conversations and laughter on a regular basis, and these are often with strangers I encounter on my rounds. I talk to people in my health food store. We talk about the best supplements to take, and share health tips and recipes. (Well, they share their recipes with me; I am not known for my culinary skills.) When I go to the beach, my fellow mermaids – people I’ve never met – and I often swap life stories while we are bobbing about. I’ve met some amazing people this way, and one of them remains a close friend to this day. While standing in line to get movie tickets, I am often in a conversation with people in front of me and/or behind me about which movie we’re going to see, the reviews, etc. And coming out of the movie, I will engage with a whole new set of people, and we will give our own reviews. Did we laugh? Did we cry? Didn’t you just love the actors? Was the book better? How did the movie make us feel? Did we like the ending? When I was recently at Goodspeed Opera and standing in a very long line for the ladies room, we all wiled away the time by laughing and joking with each other, and some of those women were hilarious. I was almost disappointed when I finally reached the coveted position of next in line. I wanted to go back and chuckle it up again
with my sisters-in-waiting. I go to my eye doctor, and we talk about the philanthropic work he does abroad. (He’s a modest man, so I have to pry it out of him.) Sometimes we talk about politics. And we laugh a lot. He’s really quite funny. I go to my naturopath, and we talk about everything under the sun, like two old friends, which we have become over the years. I go to my dentist, and again with the hilarity. When I went recently, the hygienist and I laughed until it hurt. She told me that her daughter wanted to move to Sweden, and I said we should go together sometime, as my son and grandson live there. But we would have to sit down in cargo, I specified, as those seats give the best rates. We could just scrunch ourselves in with the luggage, and maybe go through it and see if there was anything to our liking. And then we got positively silly over the prospects of going in looking like Phyllis Diller – me with my clown pants and tie-dye shirts – and coming out looking like Joan Collins, bedecked in an evening gown, long gloves, and a boa (the feathers, not the snake) wrapped around our necks. My dentist is also a treat. He tells funny stories, and provides interesting facts on a variety of subjects. He tells me that he wanted to be a dentist for as long as he can remember, when he was knee-high to a grasshopper, and he has no idea why. When I leave he gives me a hug, and I feel like I have just spent an hour with a dear friend. So those of you who live elsewhere, don’t believe everything you hear about us. Should you decide to pop into our fair state, I think you’ll find us to be just as lovely as the people you left back home. Seriously, I love us! and the ownership of human beings as property. The Durham Fair should reflect our town and its values. This band and the symbols they display dishonor Durham’s proud history during the Civil War, and are abhorrent to many Americans of all races — Durhamites and visitors alike. I urge all those who love the Durham Fair to write the Fair President and the Fair Executive Committee (durhamfair.com/info/contact. php) asking them to cancel this unfortunate booking. Michael Good Durham An exceptional team
To the editor: It is with great pleasure I pen a letter of support for the Francis/Raney team for the selectman’s offices. Laura has shown strong and prudent leadership for our town and I believe her selection of Rob Raney creates an exceptional team. Rob balances Laura’s honed skills with years of management experience. With 57 years of residency in Durham he understands the dynamics of this wonderful town. Rob has shown commitment to our community by coaching Little League, chairing the Board of Assessment Appeals and as director of the Washington Trail Race. Join me in supporting the Francis/Raney Team for 2015.
Lisa Davenport Durham Goodbye, friend To the editor: I was stunned to read that Greg Davoren drowned in Beseck Lake. I considered Greg a friend, someone you could count on, no matter when the last time you saw each other. Greg always offered himself and whatever he had, probably before he even thought about whether he had the time or energy. I can still clearly picture he and I standing at the edge of the beach, with fish bumping into our legs, talking while our kids played blissfully in the water a few summers ago. I will hold onto that image of
Greg despite all the suffering of this tragedy for his son Anthony, his family and friends. What happened to Greg, and what is happening to his family and friends is traumatic, not only because he was a good man, but he lived for many years in our town. He was part of our Middlefield and it saddened me to see that nearly all press reports listed him only living in Middletown. I hope that in this time everyone in Middlefield take hold of an expansive view of our town, wrap those that cared for him in living kindness and not shrink from our better selves. Christopher Aceto Middlefield

but repeat offenders will face a class E felony charge. Mandatory minimum sentences for drug possession near a school or daycare were also repealed. The Connecticut Mirror notes that most urban housing is within the 1,500 feet of a school or daycare specified in the repealed law. The Mirror also notes that although some legislators opposed the bill as soft on crime, sentencing reform is favored by many Republican presidential candidates, including Rand Paul, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio.

The Durham Town Green Revitalization Project Committee is current holding a fund drive to improve the appearance of the green. Many trees have been lost or are in poor shape and the turf needs improvement. In an earlier press release, we had stated that fundraising inserts would be placed in all Durham tax bills. Unfortunately, our inserts were not compatible with the machine that stuffs the tax bills. Therefore, most taxpayers did not receive the fund drive information in their tax bill. If you would like to make a donation to the revitalization of the Durham Town Green, send donations to the Durham Town Hall, Attn: Finance Dept, P.O. Box 428, Durham, CT 06422. Checks should be made payable to The Carl Otte Natural Resource Fund. Questions can be directed to Tina Gossner, (860) 349-9997.

Psychological traps investors should avoid Investing in the stock market has its ups and downs. And it’s not just because the stock market is unpredictable. It’s easy for individual Jeff Jolly investors to get tripped up by the psychology of investing. Investors need to be
aware of these four common behaviors and plan accordingly: 1. Eternal optimism. When money is involved, it’s tough to keep feelings in check. It’s completely normal — even expected — to believe your stock will go up in value even if it’s heading in the other direction. The problem is that wishful thinking can keep you in the game when you may want to be calling it
tors often delay the sale of a losing stock and instead sell winners (thinking they’re smart to turn a profit). Savvier investors know how to turn a losing stock into an advantage by selling it to offset gains and reduce their net tax bill. 4. Super ego. If you think you can beat the market, think again. Timing the market is a strategy that doesn’t work well over time. Even if you do get
quits. 2. Herd instincts. Individual investors tend to follow the crowd, buying popular stocks (perhaps influenced by a mention in the news or a friend’s recommendation) and selling when they see others cutting loose. The wise investor bases decisions on sound research, not the crowd mentality. 3. Fear of failure. No one likes to lose, so inves-

Connecticut collects $1.8 million from out-of-state firms HARTFORD — Connecticut officials say they’ve collected nearly $1.8 million in penalties from out-of-state companies operating in the state without the proper, legal authority. The penalties were paid by 353 out-of-state firms and collected by the Secretary of the State and Attorney General’s offices during fiscal year 2015. It marked the largest single year collection since the joint enforcement effort between the two offices began in 2007. Attorney General George Jepsen said out-of-state companies are often unaware they must register before conducting business in Connecticut. He said registering with the state gives consumers a layer of protection. Secretary of the State Denise Merrill said she hopes other firms will now be encouraged to comply with the law and avoid future penalties. Violators face a fine of $300 for every month they’re unregistered. – Associated Press
