Fitting Instructions

13P20 13 Pin Prewired Socket

Warning.

Normal rules of competency apply to anyone fitting these sockets to a vehicle Great care should be taken if the sockets are wired into a vehicle having multiplexed circuitry, and no attempt should be made to interrupt or interfere with the BUS, the ESUs or the power cable of a multiplexed system

The 13pin prewired socket replaces the 12N&12S sockets, but still retains the separate 12N black cable for operating the towed vehicle lights and the heavy duty 12S grey cable for ancilliary power switching

Fitting Socket Assembly

• Before proceeding, ensure that all circuits are functioning correctly on thevehicle Check that the 12N Socket can be wired in directly to the vehicle's lighting circuits without overloading the circuits, or interferingwith the bulb failure monitoring system Where interference would occur, fit individual or multiple bypass relays such as TEB1 (single bypass) TEB2MA (for flasher circuits including flasher monitoring) up to TEB7A or TEB7AS (Full bypass for systemswith modulated circuits) As a very minimum, include a statutory flasher monitor. With the 12S circuit, select an ignition switched or automatic switching bypass relay such as TEC2M or TEC3M to handle the switched live function

• " " FTtThe 13 pin socket onto a suiteDieTfiourrang piate on throwing houk -

• Drill two holes into the floor of the boot adjacent to the socket, one 13mm dia.hole for the 12N cable and one 15mm hole for the 12S cable, taking care to avoid damaging pipes or cables Protect the bare metal with rust inhibitor

• Slide correctly sized grommets onto each cable Pass each cable into the boot and make a seal with the grommets

• Disconnect the battery if possible, or otherwise isolate the circuits being worked on.

12N Circuit

• If a bypass relay is to be used, route 28/0.3 cable(minimum stranding) from car battery or fuse box to the boot, fitting an inline 15a blade type fuseholder, but removing the fuse at this stage

• Strip back sufficient of the outer sleeve to allow the individual cables to be routed to their connecting cables on the vehicle

• Using scotch locks, solderjoints or similar, attach the various leads of thel2N cable to the car loom, teeing in at a point close to the car lamp circuit and avoiding any multiplex wiring or other devices, following the colour coding in the table overleaf Incorporate the flasher monitor and or any bypass relays, following any specific instructions supplied with the supplementary device

TEB7AS 7 Way Universal Bypass Relay inc Buzzer

Description

This 7 way bypass relay may be used on negative earth vehicles of a!l types, from those that just require a simple bypass function for circuit protection or to avoid confusing the bulb failure warning systems, to those with part or full multiplexed systems and including modulated outputs(appearing as low voltages) to the various rear lamp clusters

Each circuit samples only a very small current from the source circuit of the vehicle (typically around 1ma) so as to avoid detection by the vehicles bulb failure sensing system, and then boosts this to supply current to the duplicate circuit of the trailer or caravan Additionally, it is capable of detecting, analysing and rerouting modulated signals present on an increasing number of modern vehicles which would otherwise cause incorrect bulb operation, relay chatter, dimming and even non functioning of buibs if a standard bypass relay were fitted

Main Features

• 7 way bypass relay with 7 terminal outputs arranged in 12Nsequence including reverse

Automatic sensing & routing according to signal type so that the correct trailer lights always operate as intended and at full voltage without relay chatter

Ability to sense both signals where a common wire is used on the vehicle to supply two circuits and to apply one or both to the towed vehicle as required

Integrated buzzer output which automatically mutes when both flashers operate ariu^etrrergency-braking. —•-" : ----- -

• All circuits fully snubbed for EMC protection

Procedure

Warning

This relay should befitted to negative earth vehicles only

The relay must be located where there is no possibility of moisture ingress This is very important with vans where the relay should be positioned well above the lamp cluster

Great care should be taken if the relay is fitted to a vehicle having multiplexed circuitry, and no attempt should be made to interrupt or interfere with the BUS, the ESUs or the power cable of a multiplexed system Power should be taken from the main fuse box or battery and signal sampling from the regular 12v system directly feeding the rear lamp clusters

Fit 12N socket and cable according to instructions supplied with the socket kit.

Fit 12S socket and cable where required (i.e if reverse light is to be attached) according to instructions supplied with 123 socket

Route 28/0.3 cable (2.0 sq mm) from car battery to boot or fuse box, fitting an inline 15a blade type fuseholder, but removing the fuse at this stage.

Offer upthe relay to the above cable clusters and make secure connections through the terminal blocks on the relay according to the chart overleaf

12S Cable Yellow Lead

The remaining white earth lead of the of the 12N cable should be terminated with a 6.4mm DBA blue ring terminal, combining the white signal wire from the relay into the terminal, and firmly securing to clean bare metal of the chassis

Using scotch locks, solder joints or similar, attach the various leads coming from the underside of the relay to the car loom, teeing in at a point close to the car lamp circuit that is being sampled and avoiding any multiplex wiring or other devices

** If the car has a common wire feeding tail & brake, or tail & fog, the brown and black signal wires should not be connected to this common wire, ie For a common tail & brake combination, connect only the red signal lead to the common car harness lead and tape up the brown and black Similarly connect just the blue signal lead from the relay for a fog/tail combination

TEC3M Auto Switching Combination Relay SOamp

Description

This combination caravan relay automatically senses battery/alternator condition and load demand, and switches current from the car's battery to the caravan's battery, fridge and internal lights via its own split charge relay. Sensing is automatic and does not require the use of a separate lead from the ignition switch Sensing takes account of over voltage availability of the battery, demand condition from the caravan and line voltage drop under load including the general condition of the connections train The unit is very compact, which belies its ability to handle large currents of up to 30 amps continuously through the use of high quality low voltage drop relays and circuitry, whilst retaining an over temperature cut-out capability

The TEC3M has been constructed to not only handle 30 amp loads, but it will also handle smaller loads from conventional caravans and still sense and process the load correctly

Procedure

• Fit 12Ssocket and heavy duty cable according to instructions supplied with the socket kit

Route Twin 35/0.3 cable(preferably44/0.3) or two single cables of 35/0.3 (44/0.3) from car battery or fuse box to boot, fitting an inline 30a blade type fuseholder, but removing the fuse at this stage

Offer up the relay to the various cables and make secure connections through the terminal block according to the chart below

First 35/0.3 (44/0.3) cable from car battery

Second 35/0.3 (44/0.3) cable from car battery (Recommended for 30a loads)

12S Socket - Pin 6. Red Lead

12S Socket - Pin4 Green Lead

12S Socket - Pin 2 Blue Lead

Suitable earth, minimum 16/0.2 thin wall preferably to chassis with ring terminal

Secure the relay to the harness or similar preferably using a tywrap, such that there is adequate ventilation to allow dissipation of heat from the unit

Insert the inline fuse and test. With the engine off, the unit should remain unswitched With the engine on, the unit should turn on after a suitable delay of approx 1/2 min If a load simulation jig is available, test to ensure unit stays on under load

Troubleshooting

Relay will not turn on with engine running

Relay cycles under load

Insufficient overvoltage caused by faulty battery or alternator

Faulty car battery

Faulty electrical connections

Excessive length or insufficient gauge of supply leads

Single supply lead only used instead of double

Long delay before turning off

Note

Excessive load - Discharged Leisure Battery orshort Battery maintaining overvoltage Normal with new battery

These instructions are applicable to all installations, including pre and post 1998caravans with standard or heavy load fridges

If a heavy load fridge is known to be fitted to the customer's caravan, it is strongly recommended that either twin feed cables are fitted or that a single 56/0.3 cable is fitted to avoid cycling caused by excessive line voltage drop

To minimise voltage drop under heavy loads, and especially where excessive runs of cable are involved, use heavier conductor valuese.g 5S/0.&-(4-3q mm) or run two sets of conductors e.g 2 x 44/0.3 (3 sq mm)

Phone: 44(0)1706638065

Fax: 44(0)1706525249

Similarly, voltage drop after the relay can be reduced by paralleling circuits 2 & 6 with a link at the relay or the 12S socket or even within the caravan if_access_is .sya'!able~Xhis-practisemust not be used if there is any possibility of towing a pre 1999 caravan
