Dear TRAMily, Thank you

TRAM

We hope you enjoy this issue and of course TRAM is always open to submissions from YOU. If you have ideas for socials or the magazine, please don’t hesitate to email us or hit us up via Instagram or Facebook!

In this issue, we’re saying goodbye to some truly amazing JET senpais. We would like to give them a spotlight and share some of the wisdom they’ve gathered while here. Let’s celebrate the moments we’ve had together and wish them well on their journeys beyond JET. This isn’t a typical way of doing a TRAM magazine, but we couldn’t introduce the newcomers without first saying goodbye to our amazing leavers. For the new folks, maybe this will be the time you finally put a face/personality to your pred name that has helped you adjust to your new life. Let this issue be a thoughtful closure or amazing introduction to your Toyama JET experience!

For some, orientation and introductions happened. So many new people and faces that you’re probably having a hard time remembering names. With welcome dinners, prefectural events, local events and festivals popping up as the weather slowly cools, you might want to at least recognize your fellow ALTs in different areas!

TRAM is coming out with another banger! It wouldn’t have been possible without you all, so THANK YOU and OTSUKARESAMA!

Something I don't want to leave behind is…

Living abroad can be hard, but it becomes much much easier if you LIVE abroad. If your only interaction with Japan and Japanese people becomes work, but you are otherwise online or in English only spaces, then you will have a much harder time here. Help with festivals. Go with coworkers to do some sort of hobby. Find an identity outside of "foreigner living in Japan." The more you do the easier a time you will have, and the more enriching all of this will be. I spent too much of my early years not really experiencing Japan and it's the only real regret I have.

HIMI RAMEN. If I could pack the whole shop up including the best couple ever who runs it and ship it all back to Hawaii with me I would. My husband and I have been going to Himi Ramen once (sometimes twice) a week since we arrived in Himi. The ramen is the best I’ve ever tasted and the owners are so kind and friendly. Himi ramen will hold a special place in my heart forever, I don’t know how I will live without it. Hit us with that wisdom! (departing words)

Just remember that you are an working adult that is a part of Japanese society just like anyone else, so do not negotiate down your rights with yourself before even speaking with others. If you want to change something about your experience in Japan, feel free to advocate for that change! You may not get the outcome that you wanted, but at least you made an effort to improve your experience in Japan. You won't know someone will tell you "no" until you hear it from them directly. And "no' is not always the end of the conversation; sometimes you just need to be a bit creative :)

When I get home, I will gorge myself on… Pho, burritos and tacos, and homemade pie. Also a real ice cream cake. Hit us with that wisdom! (departing words)

If you have places you've always wanted to go, make it a priority to go there, even if you get too tired or busy to travel more than that. Schedule it for Golden Week or another school break and book in advance! 4

Don't change to fit in here in Japan. Just be yourself and people will love you as you are. <3 (of course, if you want to lose some negative qualities for some good ones, that is okay ;o) )

When my English club kids decided to have an English rock band for the school festival. We sang Billie Eilish and Oasis songs and played our own instruments (guitars, drums, vocals, tambourine.) It was awesome and they had a really great time!! Hit us with that wisdom! (departing words)

1. Let go of the small stuff. Some things are out of your control and it it's not harming anyone or goes against your values, it's easier to let people do it their way rather than get upset.

2. Ask for help! You can only be an expert in so many things, so know your strengths, but definitely rely on the strengths and skills of others. Not only will it alleviate the burden, but you might also learn something new. Toyama ✧ ✧ ✧ 9 Months When I get home, I will gorge myself on… Anything and everything from Trader Joe's. In December of 2021, Snow White Farms in Tateyama gathered friends and family to make mochi the traditional Japanese way. I learned how to pound and shape mochi, and I enjoyed the feeling of family and sharing the experience with my closest friends.

I met so many wonderful people while living in Toyama! This was taken at my (and Thomas's) birthday party in Nanto, when lots of different people got together to play games and talk and laugh.
