What was Viking life like?

LO: To understand the culture and lifestyle of Scandinavian Vikings.


Key Words • Society: A group of people with a shared identity. (e.g. ‘Viking society’ = Viking people.) • Culture: The beliefs and values that a society holds as important, it’s identity.


Starter • Share your responses with your partner.  Did you get the same responses?  Why might this have been?  How would your answers be different if I asked about British people 1000 years ago?


Today’s Lesson • We will be examining the challenges faced by historians when analysing Viking life. • There is a lot of content to wrap your heads around so this will be supported with an ongoing homework task.


Why might it be a problem for historians to define Viking society? – Geography


Scandinavian Geography • The temperature and landscape of Scandinavia varies drastically. • How might this impact a tribal society?


Tribal Structure • Early Viking society followed a feudal structure. • However, by the 9th century Kings had started to rule over large areas of land.

Tribal Structure • In Viking society, you were often born into your place. • However, unlike many other cultures, you could change your social position through marriage. • However, all tribes were different and adopted differing forms of rules.


Jobs/Pastimes • Viking society relied on fishing and farming. • As the Vikings were tribal, they would rely on the land, and move if they needed to. • In many cases, the Vikings loved to hunt as a way of showing their skill.


Jobs/Pastimes • A key difference in Viking society was the roles played by people in tribes compared to those who lived in towns. • Why might these pose a challenge to historians?


Trade • All historians agree that the Vikings needed trade to survive. • They traded with each other as well as other countries in order to get the goods needed to survive.

Case Study • One group that Viking tribes traded with was the Saami of Scandinavia, who were specialist hunters. • Vikings would trade furs in return for fish and reindeer.


Trade • As the Viking age continued, the Vikings became the main traders of Western Europe. • They travelled as far as the Middle East and Asia thanks to their advanced ships.  Why would this be a challenge for historians trying to compare them with earlier Vikings?
