CULTIVATING CURIOSITY, CREATING CHANGE

Welcome to the School’s Out issue of Education UAE, where we explore the ever-evolving landscape of learning, teaching, and the educational systems that shape the nation.

In this edition, we examine the innovative approaches that are redefining education and are witnessing a shift towards more personalised, holistic, and flexible educational experiences. We look into the impact of understanding finance on students’ lives too, while also delving into the exciting world of school trips and summer camps.

Another key theme we address is the importance of sustainability in schools. Sustainability in schools is crucial for fostering environmentally conscious future generations. By integrating sustainable practices, such as energy efficiency, waste reduction, and eco-friendly curriculums, schools can significantly reduce their carbon footprint. Educating students about sustainability encourages responsible behaviour, critical thinking, and a sense of global stewardship. We also look at the mental health challenges affecting students, with the pressures of academic performance, social dynamics, and the ongoing impact of the pandemic having taken a toll on mental well-being

As always, we look at excellence in education across pre-school, school, and university, plus the latest happenings in EdTech, and a fascinating children’s gardening campaign. Then there’s radio broadcaster and accidental Instagram influencer Helen Farmer’s new children’s book, My Mummy’s Secret Adventures. And if you’re taking a trip to London this summer, we’ve got that covered too! As always, Education UAE dedicates itself to fostering a dialogue among educators, policymakers, students, and parents. We believe that by sharing knowledge, experiences, and perspectives, we can collectively navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Thank you for joining us on this journey. We hope that this issue inspires you to think critically, act compassionately, and continue to advocate for the transformative power of education.

Dubai’s private early childhood education centres

Enrolments at Dubai’s private early childhood centres continue to rise, with a 16% increase in enrolment during the 2023-24 academic year.

According to figures released by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), 25 new early childhood centres opened in the emirate this year, bringing the total number of centres of 274.

The centres care for more than 27,000 children, including over 2,500 Emirati children.

Her Excellency Aisha Miran, Director General of KHDA said: “Early childhood centres play a crucial role in nurturing our children during their formative years. Providing high quality early education is essential to support children’s cognitive, social, and emotional development, laying the foundation for lifelong success. Parents are becoming increasingly aware of their children’s developmental needs and the importance of early childhood education in meeting those needs.

“The continued growth in enrolment over the past year reflects the dedication of our early childhood centres to delivering toptier education and the trust that parents place in these centres to offer rich and meaningful learning experiences for their children. Furthermore, results of international assessments consistently show that students who begin their learning journey earlier score higher in mathematics, science, and reading than their peers.

“We are grateful to early childhood managers and teachers for creating safe, joyful, and stimulating environments where our youngest learners can thrive. We encourage parents to make use of this valuable resource and explore the diverse choices available to them.”

The report also highlights the diversity of student demographics and educational offerings in the sector, with 134 centres caring for children from at least 20 different nationalities.

Parents in Dubai can choose from 16 different curricula offered by early learning centres, with the Early Years Foundation Stage UK curriculum being the most widely offered (215 centres), followed by the Montessori curriculum (20 centres), and US curriculum (eight centres). The main languages of instruction include English, Arabic, French, and Swedish, among others.

The majority of children (69%) enrolled are between two and four years old. Nearly 80% of children attend five days a week.

Early childhood centres in Dubai employ more than 1,700 teachers and 2,500 teaching assistants.

Parents can use the directory on the KHDA website and mobile app to search for early childhood centres based on location, fees, and other criteria.

81% of Dubai students attend private schools rated Good or better

Dubai continues to see improvements in educational quality, with 81% of students now attending private schools rated Good or higher, up from 77% last year, according to KHDA.

This year, 209 schools with over 360,000 students were inspected, including 10 new schools. Among them, 23 were rated Outstanding, 48 Very Good, 85 Good, and 51 Acceptable. Two schools were rated Weak, with none rated Very Weak. Overall, 26 schools saw rating improvements, while three saw declines.

Her Excellency Aisha Abdulla Miran, Director General of KHDA, remarked: “The continuous improvement by the schools indicates their commitment to offering highquality educational opportunities. Our schools are among the world’s highest performing, according to international assessments, ranking sixth for literacy in PIRLS, top 10 globally for maths, and top 14 for science and reading in PISA assessments. These results reaffirm Dubai’s status as a world-class destination for education, in line with the leadership’s vision set out in the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 and Dubai Social Agenda 33.”

This year, 90% of schools improved in one or more quality indicators, with 67% related to student outcomes, 26% to school provisions, and 7% to leadership.

Dubai’s schools have made notable progress in teaching Arabic as a first language, with 64% rated Good or higher, up from 52% last year. For Islamic education, 77% of schools were rated Good or higher, compared to 68% in the previous academic year.

During the academic year, private schools in Dubai will not undergo full inspections, except for new schools completing their third year. This decision supports the teaching and learning process, allowing schools to implement development plans. The DSIB team will conduct quality assurance visits focusing on specific areas to monitor progress.

Full inspection reports and individual parent summary reports for the 2023-24 academic year are now available on the KHDA website and mobile app.

private schools rank 2nd globally in financial literacy and 6th for creative thinking

Dubai’s private schools continue to excel in international rankings, securing second place in financial literacy and sixth in creative thinking, according to a pioneering study by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) under the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022.

PISA, conducted triennially, assesses the practical application of real-life skills in reading, mathematics, and science among 15-year-old students. The 2022 assessment also included financial literacy and creative thinking.

Dubai’s private schools ranked second among 20 participating cities and countries in financial literacy, scoring 522 points against the OECD global average of 498 points.

Of the 4,478 students from Dubai who participated, 47% reported receiving financial management education as part of their school curriculum, while 53% acquired these skills through activities outside of school. Additionally, 82% of students indicated they knew how to manage their money, with 79% having savings goals. Over a quarter (27%) of the students had a bank account, and nearly a third (32%) possessed a credit or debit card.

In creative thinking, Dubai’s private schools ranked sixth out of 64 participating cities and countries, scoring 36 points compared to the OECD average of 33 points, with female students outperforming male students by four points.

A significant 84% of the 7,474 participating students from Dubai’s private schools performed at Level 3 or higher in creative thinking, surpassing the OECD average by 6%. Furthermore, 42% of Dubai students performed at Levels 5 and 6, compared to 40% in Australia, Finland, and New Zealand, and 45% in Canada and South Korea, against the OECD average of 27% for Levels 4 and 5.

“We are immensely proud of our students and schools’ performance in these international assessments, which underscore Dubai’s reputation as a premier destination for high quality education” Her Excellency Aisha Miran, Director General of KHDA

The results of the PISA 2022 study show that educational systems that excel in creative thinking also achieve high scores in mathematics, reading, and science, as illustrated by Dubai’s private schools’ performance. We are thankful to our schools, teachers, and parents for their role in preparing our students with future skills and raising the quality of education in Dubai.”

ECA Report Highlights Rise of Parent-friendly Workplaces

Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority (ECA) has released The Future of Work: The Rise of Parent-friendly Workplaces in the UAE report, unveiling key insights into the rise of parent-friendly workplaces in the UAE and highlighting the impact of the Parent-friendly Label Program ™ (PFL), launched by ECA in 2021.

Unveiled to stakeholders and media at a special event in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, 30 April, the groundbreaking report includes valuable findings from a wide-ranging study of 75 organisations across 23 industries and almost 10,000 responses to employee surveys.

The event's panellists were Her Excellency Huda Al Hashimi, Deputy Minister of the Cabinet Affairs for Strategic Affairs; His Excellency Dr Tariq Bin Hendi, Senior Partner at Global Ventures; Lucy d’Abo, CEO Together; Omar Alkhan, Head of Centre for Business Studies & Research at Dubai Chamber of Commerce; and Dr Saliha Afridi, Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Founder of The Lighthouse Arabia. They sparked insightful discussions about the rise of parent-friendly workplaces across the UAE, which aligns with the vision of the UAE leadership and the broader goals of achieving a prosperous society, emphasising family stability, and enhancing sustainability. Additionally, Cycle 2 and 3 Label earners were also present at the event.

With the world constantly changing at a rapid rate, the report unpacks key trends driving the growth of parent-friendly workplaces in the UAE, including a shift in the perception of workplace flexibility from a mere perk to an integral component of holistic employee well-being strategy.

It also underscores how the implementation of parent-friendly policies not only enhances employee retention and brand reputation but benefits the children of working parents and wider society. The 30-page document looks at the impact of the PFL to date, delves into key learnings and recommendations, and looks at how policy promoting parent-friendly workplaces

can shape the future of work. To date, the programme has proudly reached more than 148,000 children, including 1,500 children of determination.

His Highness Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Office of Development and Martyrs Families Affairs, and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority, said: “The success achieved through the programme since its launch emphasises the growth and huge demand from organisations across the UAE to discover the importance of parentfriendly workplaces, and creating a serious change in work policies, contributing to a thriving parent-friendly environment where the community can flourish.”

Her Excellency Sana Mohamed Suhail, Director General of Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority (ECA), said: “The PFL has made great strides since its launch. The response from organisations has been very positive, reflecting a deep appreciation of the programme’s goals and its role in shaping future work environments. The insights presented in The Rise of Parentfriendly Workplaces in the UAE report are a clear indication we are moving in the right direction towards creating enabling environments that support individuals to excel professionally and achieve worklife balance, which aligns with our wise leadership’s vision and the programme’s objectives.”

35% of the organisations have adopted flexible work policies

“The report highlights a number of significant aspects of parent-friendly workplaces that not only benefit working parents and their children but also deliver high-impact benefits to organisations and society. This resonates with ECA’s goals to promote the well-being of families as a holistic aspiration that positively impacts society and the economy now and, in the future, ultimately enhancing the lives of parents, children, and others alike.”

As the report demonstrates, the journey towards fostering parent-friendly workplaces is both a visionary pursuit and a pragmatic approach. It also highlights the strategic objectives of the PFL to shape a future where the integration of work and family life is not merely an aspiration but a vibrant reality, giving priority to parents and their children and generating lasting change for the benefit of everyone.

Nearly half of the organisations that applied to participate in the first cycle of the UAE-wide PFL reported that they have proactively started to improve their policies or are seriously considering making these changes as part of their participation in the programme.

Key highlights from the report

 According to data extracted during the program’s Cycle 2, 31 out of 75 organisations that applied to earn the PFL have proactively started to improve their policies or are actively considering changes as a result of their participation in the programme. This is underscored by their growing commitment to prioritise the needs of working parents, underpinned by their engagement in the PFL.

 According to 39% of the organisations that have been surveyed, the most impact was seen when parent-friendly practices were formalised and transformed into policies. Additionally, 35% of the organisations have adopted flexible work policies, 35% improved lactation facilities or hours, and 22% improved parental leave, including increased maternity and paternity leave benefits, special parental leave benefits, and leave support benefits. The data also reveals that employees in parent-friendly workplaces are nine times more likely to not only recommend their employers but also actively advocate for them.

 The PFL launched its third cycle on 27 February 2024. Eligible organisations are invited to take the first step to promote positive change by applying to earn the Parent-friendly Label™ The deadline to apply is 2 September 2024.

To date, the programme has proudly reached more than 148,000 children, including 1,500 children of determination

SHAPING HAPPIER CHILDHOODS

The Nordic Way at Dibber

One can't help but ponder the reasons behind the consistent high rankings of Nordic countries in childhood happiness reports. While many factors contribute, one important element stands out: Outdoor Learning. It is not just about spending time in nature and the countries’ varied landscapes, but ‘outdoor learning’ also instils essential life skills, environmental awareness, and improves physical health and psychological wellbeing, contributing to the child’s early learning and future achievements.

The Nordic education system places a high emphasis on outdoor learning, acknowledging its significant role in fostering all-round growth. An important element is the inclusion of friluftsliv, an integral part of the Nordic education system, which showcases a commitment to outdoor learning and its integration into teaching and learning approaches.

The ‘all-weather approach’ is also a key aspect followed in the Nordics

The Essence of Friluftsliv: Embracing the Outdoors

Friluftsliv—a term that loosely translates to ‘free air life’—is a centuries-old concept that embodies a deep-rooted appreciation for nature and the outdoors, portraying the belief that regular contact with the natural world positively influences physical, emotional, and mental well-being. It is integrated into various aspects of daily life in the Nordic countries, encouraging children to spend time outdoors and fostering an understanding and appreciation of the world around them.

Educators incorporate outdoor learning experiences across various subjects and age levels, creating opportunities for learners to connect with nature while engaging in meaningful, hands-on activities. From forest walks and exploration trips to outdoor art and science lessons, the natural environment becomes an extension of the classroom, offering unique opportunities for experiential learning and personal growth.

The ‘all-weather approach’ is also a key aspect followed in the Nordics while prioritising outdoor learning. But what exactly is the ‘all-weather approach?’ As the name says, it is all about embracing outdoor time year-round, with appropriate clothing and activities.

While the Nordic countries are increasingly adopting ‘forest schools’ as a way to make nature the teacher, their philosophies can easily translate across regions. These regions can provide children with the opportunity to experience and interact with their natural surroundings by regularly spending time outdoors and appreciating the natural environment.

Spending time in nature offers a plethora of benefits for children, including:

Cultivating Problem-Solving Skills

Outdoor learning experiences provide numerous opportunities for children to develop problem-solving skills, equipping them with the tools they need to overcome challenges and adapt to various situations.

Friluftsliv

is a centuries-old concept that embodies a deep-rooted appreciation for nature and the outdoors

With 600+ preschools in over 10 countries, Dibber is Northern Europe’s largest early childhood education provider.

Educators incorporate lessons on environmental preservation, climate change, and sustainable practices

By engaging in activities that require collaboration, critical thinking, and persistence, children learn to persevere through difficulties and derive innovative solutions to complex problems. These valuable skills not only foster academic success but also contribute to their ability to navigate the challenges and uncertainties they might encounter in their daily lives. As they continue to engage in outdoor learning experiences, they cultivate greater selfconfidence and become better prepared to face both obstacles and opportunities that lie ahead.

Promoting Physical, Emotional, and Social Growth

Taking part in regular outdoor activities enables children to engage in physical exercise, fostering an appreciation for fitness and promoting healthy growth and development. Research has shown that spending time in natural environments can reduce stress, enhance focus and concentration, and positively affect mental health. Socially, outdoor activities often necessitate teamwork and communication, nurturing interpersonal skills, and strengthening bonds among peers. These shared experiences enable children to develop trust, empathy, and mutual understanding, building stronger and more cohesive preschool communities.

Fostering Environmental Stewardship

An essential aspect of the Nordic way of living is encouraging children to develop a sense of responsibility and connection to the natural world. By regularly immersing them in nature, educators foster a deep appreciation for the environment and its inhabitants, laying the foundations for responsible and sustainable living. Educators incorporate lessons on environmental preservation, climate change, and sustainable practices, empowering children to understand their role as global citizens and protect the planet for future generations. It is imperative to nurture a sense of environmental stewardship by equipping children with the motivation, knowledge, and skills needed to create a greener, more sustainable future.

Enhancing Lives Through the Benefits of Outdoor Learning

Outdoor learning experiences form a pivotal aspect of early childhood education. By embracing the values of friluftsliv, young minds learn to connect with the natural

world, developing responsibility and a deeper understanding of their role as global citizens and responsible leaders of tomorrow. As technological devices become more readily available, children are spending much less time playing outside. Consequently, today’s children spend significantly less time outdoors compared to previous generations. Meanwhile, following five years as principal at The English College, Mark is retiring after a 40-year career as an educator. Nicola Hamer, Head of Secondary at The English College Dubai

A New Head of Secondary Takes the Helm at The English College Dubai

With nearly twenty-five years of teaching experience, Nicola Hamer will assume the role of Head of Secondary at The English College Dubai in the 2024-2025 academic year. Nicola, who moved to the UAE from England at the age of 12, boasts an impressive educational background, including a business degree and a post-graduate certification in education (PGCE). Education UAE spoke to Nicola to gain insights into her plans for her new role, as well as learn about her ideal addition to the curriculum if she had the power to make it happen.

Education UAE: How do you envision fostering a positive school culture and ensuring a supportive environment for both students and staff in your new post?

Nicola Hamer: Fostering a positive school culture and ensuring support for everyone is fundamental for happy and successful staff and students. Clear and open communication is key. It is important for everyone to feel heard and valued. Hearing and responding to feedback is, and will always be, my priority. In addition, it is essential that, as a school, we promote respect within our community. Respect is one of the school’s core values and by ensuring that we treat others with respect, we can ensure we have a culture where everyone feels accepted.

Education UAE: What strategies will you implement to enhance academic performance and student achievement across various subjects and grade levels?

Nicola Hamer: First and foremost, I believe that ensuring we have high-quality teaching is paramount. By investing in professional development for teachers, keeping them up-to-date with the latest pedagogical techniques and subject knowledge is crucial. As we are now part of the International Schools Partnership (ISP) there are opportunities for CPD year-

round. Additionally, by fostering a culture of collaboration within our school and across the ISP network in the Middle East, teachers will be able to share best practices and learn from each other, which will also be key.

By upskilling teachers, we can ensure that students receive personalised learning. Every student has unique needs and strengths, so through staff development, I will ensure we consistently implement strategies that cater to individual learning styles.

Assessment is also a big part of the equation. I’m committed to further developing the work we have already started to ensure we have a balanced assessment system that includes formative assessments, projectbased assessments, and skill assessments. This way, we can get a more comprehensive understanding of student progress and ensure that students really understand what they are learning.

Education UAE: How will you prioritise diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the school community?

Nicola Hamer: It is essential that as a school we have an environment where every individual feels valued, respected, and included, regardless of their background or abilities. This is the only way to create a thriving school community.

I want to create opportunities for parents to actively participate in their children’s education

The school already has embedded policies and practices that promote equity and fairness across the board, from admissions to curriculum reviews, ensuring we are addressing any disparities. This includes staff training incorporated into development time, led by the school’s diversity working party, as well as ensuring we incorporate multicultural perspectives into our lessons, celebrating cultural events and holidays, and providing opportunities for students to explore issues of social justice and equity.

Lastly, I recognise the importance of engaging with parents and the wider community in our diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Building partnerships with community organisations, hosting diversity events, and soliciting feedback from stakeholders will be key in ensuring that our initiatives are meaningful and reflective of the needs of our diverse school community.

Education UAE: What measures will you take to support teachers’ professional development and promote a collaborative approach to instruction and curriculum development?

Nicola Hamer: I believe it is essential to provide teachers with a variety of professional development opportunities tailored to their needs and interests. Whether it’s workshops, conferences, or online courses, I want to ensure that teachers have access to resources that help them grow in their practice and that it is bespoke enough to ensure maximum engagement.

I think peer observations and feedback can be incredibly valuable. We take part in the ISP peer review and it is always beneficial to have feedback from our peers who are engaged in the same roles and are facing similar situations. It is also

important to have teachers sitting down together after observing each other’s classes, discussing what went well, and sharing ideas for improvement. It’s all about creating a culture where learning from each other is not only encouraged but celebrated.

Coaching sessions can also have a major impact on developing teachers and leaders in a school. The time and space to reflect on their teaching and set goals for growth can be incredibly powerful.

Clear and open communication is key

Education UAE: How do you plan to engage parents and guardians in their children’s education and strengthen partnerships between the school and the community?

I want to build on The English College family and community feel of the school

Nicola Hamer: This is another example of where communication is key. It’s important to me to establish regular channels of communication with parents to ensure they know what’s going on in the school, but more importantly, to hear their feedback. For our own development,

it is so important to hear what the parents think and what matters to them.

I want to create opportunities for parents to actively participate in their children’s education. We already host parent workshops on topics such as supporting literacy at home, understanding the curriculum, or navigating university application processes. I want to develop our curriculum maps and resources so that parents know what their children are learning and can support them on their journey.

In terms of strengthening partnerships between the school and the community, I believe in building relationships with local businesses and organisations. By collaborating with the wider community, we can provide students with real-world learning experiences to prepare them for the future.

Education UAE: What steps will you take to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students and staff, both physically and emotionally?

Nicola Hamer: All students should feel emotionally secure in school. It’s the only way they truly thrive and achieve their potential. As a school, it’s important that we educate our students on what that looks like. At the moment, we run a PERMA programme throughout the school focusing on Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment. This framework is based on Martin Seligman’s positive psychology theory and combines traditional education principles with researchbacked ways of increasing happiness and well-being. The school also has a dedicated councillor who does a phenomenal job supporting our students, whether it be exam stress or friendship issues.

Staff well-being is threaded throughout our annual CPD programme, which we adapt and change each year, responding to staff feedback. We also have a well-being committee that brings

innovative ideas to the table to support staff and meet their needs. This committee has even formed a netball team, and their most recent match was a leavers match against the 6th form - of course, the staff won!

Education UAE: What initiatives do you have in mind to promote extracurricular activities, clubs, and sports programmes that contribute to students’ holistic development?

Nicola Hamer: Firstly, I want to expand our range of extracurricular activities to cater to a diverse array of interests and talents. This might include offering clubs and programmes focused on areas such as arts and crafts, coding and robotics, environmental conservation, community service, as well as the more traditional sports.

By providing a variety of options, we can ensure that every student has the opportunity to explore their passions and develop new skills outside of the classroom. All students should be able to find something that appeals to them beyond the curriculum. I want to work with teachers to encourage student involvement and ensure that clubs are accessible and welcoming to all.

In terms of sports programmes, I want to ensure students can access both competitive and recreational sports. While competitive sports can help students develop skills such as teamwork, leadership, and resilience, recreational sports can provide a fun and inclusive outlet for physical activity and socialisation.

It’s important to build a culture where we recognise and celebrate

student achievements in their extracurricular activities, clubs, and sports programmes. Celebrating student accomplishments can build school spirit and pride, and motivate students to continue pursuing their interests and passions outside of the classroom.

Education UAE: How will you measure the success of your leadership and the overall effectiveness of the school under your guidance, and what benchmarks or indicators will you use to assess progress?

Nicola Hamer: Ultimately, the success of my leadership and the school’s effectiveness will be measured by the sense of community within the school. I want to build on The English College family and community feel of the school, where everyone feels valued, supported, and empowered to thrive. While academic success and achievement matter, it’s the human connections, happy and wellrounded students, and passionate and caring staff, that will truly define my success.

Education UAE: What’s the most unusual talent or hobby you’ve discovered among your students, and do you showcase it to the school community?

Nicola Hamer: I used to run the Duke of Edinburgh award, so I have seen students demonstrating every skill and talent you could think of, from extreme yoyo to dog training! It’s important programmes like

By upskilling teachers, we can ensure that students receive personalised learning

the Duke of Edinburgh Award that support students to follow their passions. Learning and mastering new skills boosts students’ self-confidence and self-esteem and, as they overcome challenges, they develop a sense of pride in their abilities. This is something that then supports them in all areas of their educational journey.

Education UAE: If you could magically add one subject to the curriculum that isn’t typically taught in secondary schools, what would it be and why?

Nicola Hamer: Accountancy and Financial Literacy. I have taught Business to students in years 10-13 for over 15 years and it always amazes me we don’t teach them enough about personal finances to make informed decisions and plan for their future. Understanding concepts such as credit ratings, compound interest, borrowing, and debt management can empower students to achieve financial independence and avoid common pitfalls through university and beyond.

Enrichment Through Sailing

Sailing as an extracurricular activity offers a multitude of benefits to students. It contributes to students’ physical fitness, mental focus, and discipline. Additionally, it promotes teamwork and collaboration, essential skills in both personal and professional life. The unpredictable nature of sailing teaches students to adapt and problem-solve in real time, cultivating a flexible and resilient mindset.

A Unique Learning Environment and Community

The Dubai Offshore Sailing Club, with its state-of-the-art facilities and expert instructors, provides an ideal setting for this unique learning experience. Their emphasis on safety and skill development ensures that NLCS Dubai students receive high-quality instruction. As this partnership flourishes, NLCS Dubai remains dedicated to providing its students with unparalleled opportunities for growth and development. Integrating sailing into the school’s curriculum exemplifies NLCS Dubai’s innovative approach to education, supporting students’ emotional, social, and intellectual development.

The future at NLCS Dubai undoubtedly remains on the waves!”

Empowering Future Women Engineers

Dr Nidhal Abdulaziz, Associate Professor, School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, Heriot-Watt University Dubai

In an era of technological breakthroughs, the role of women in engineering cannot be more pronounced. However, in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, there persists a gender gap in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This gap can be addressed by providing girls with the right resources and high-quality STEM education. On International Women in Engineering Day, Dr Nidhal Abdulaziz, Associate Professor, School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, Heriot-Watt University Dubai, sheds light on the pivotal role of education in empowering future women engineers in MENA.

Middle Eastern governments and organisations understand that a strong base in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics is important in advancing local research and development, leading to innovations in various sectors that contribute to the region’s overall growth. According to UNESCO, only 35% of global STEM students are women in higher education. However, 57% of STEM graduates in the MENA region are women, rising to 61% in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Only 35% of global STEM students are women in higher education

Dr Nidhal Abdulaziz, Heriot-Watt University Dubai 

The inclusion of women in engineering can drive innovation and improve productivity. STEM education builds confidence and equips women with critical thinking and technical skills. It opens up diverse and lucrative career opportunities for women, which leads to better problem-solving and more creative solutions. Various successful programmes in the MENA region encourage young girls to pursue careers in STEM. Arab Women In Computing (ArabWIC) is one such initiative that supports the participation of Arab women in computing and technology.

The UAE government has also introduced various initiatives to promote STEM education.

The UAE's Vision 2021 targets a knowledge-based economy that is driven by STEM. Another such initiative is ‘Innovation and Entrepreneurship’, which was introduced in higher education institutes across the UAE to help foster innovation and scientific inquiry, focusing on increasing female participation.

Heriot-Watt University (HWU) also offers scholarships at undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) levels to promote women in STEM. For instance, at the UG level, HWU offers a four-year scholarship programme as part of the 1821 Appeal: Mary Burton Project to 40 women in STEM. At the PG level, there is a scholarship called

Despite the progress made, there is still much work to be done

Funds For Women Graduates (FFWG) grants for women studying or researching for a postgraduate degree or PhD. At our Dubai campus, the Edinburgh Business School - Shaping ‘Women Entrepreneurs’ Scholarship is awarded to females residing in the GCC. Such initiatives promote STEM education, which is essential for harnessing technological innovation.

Despite the progress made, there is still much work to be done. Public awareness campaigns, community workshops, and inclusive educational policies can help shift perceptions and encourage more girls to consider engineering as a viable and rewarding career path. Accessible and high-quality STEM education has become imperative for empowering future women engineers in the MENA region. By continuing and expanding these efforts through investments, the MENA region will unlock the full potential of its female population, enabling innovation, economic growth, and social transformation.

Education, Exploration, and Endless Fun!

School camps are becoming increasingly popular in the UAE, and Absolute Adventure is leading the way with dynamic, engaging programs that seamlessly integrate outdoor activities with classroom learning. Education UAE interviewed Ashlin Ontong, Education Manager at Absolute Adventure, to explore how these camps integrate with school curricula and why it’s so important.

“At our camps, students engage in team-building activities that teach communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills”

“Integrating outdoor camps with school syllabi enhances students’ understanding and appreciation of the natural world through practical, hands-on experiences, beyond just the classroom,” Ashlin explains.

“At our camps, students engage in activities that teach communication, teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, among others. By connecting classroom concepts with real-world applications, they are pushed out of their comfort zones and thus foster a deeper appreciation for the environment and its complexities.”

Outdoor camps can significantly enhance traditional classroom learning by providing immersive experiences that bring theoretical knowledge to life. For example, studying ecosystems in a textbook is informative, but exploring a wadi or mangrove allows students to observe ecological interactions in real-time. They can see how species coexist, food chains operate, and environmental factors affect living organisms, making the information more tangible and memorable.

“Experiences like observing turtle species and rare birds enrich their biodiversity knowledge, foster a deeper connection with nature, enhance observational skills, and contribute to a more holistic education,” Ashlin says.

Building Success Through Teamwork

Integrating outdoor experiential learning into the school curriculum enhances both academic achievement and personal development skills, such as teamwork. As students navigate challenges and projects outdoors, they learn to apply their knowledge creatively and effectively, developing resilience and learn the importance of teamwork and communication. Absolute Adventure activities are designed to test students’ physical and mental capacities, requiring them to work together to succeed.

A popular activity is raft-building, which demands collaboration to create a firm and stable structure to be tested. This activity involves planning, communication, role allocation, listening, directing, and problemsolving, all skills needed to understand teamwork.

Less Screen Time, More Fun

Outdoor camps promote physical activity among students through structured activities such as hiking, mountain biking, and kayaking. These activities improve fitness, strength, and endurance, contributing to better overall health.

“It also helps reduce students’ screen time, promoting a more balanced and active lifestyle,” Ashlin continues. “Additionally, outdoor experiential learning enhances students’ practical skills, environmental awareness, and overall well-being.”

Nature’s Classroom

Aligning outdoor camps with academic goals is the most effective way to integrate them into the school year, thus ensuring students don’t lose any valuable study time.

For instance, the Physical Education curriculum could incorporate residential camps into outdoor learning. By tying outdoor camp activities to academic content, educators can ensure students meet educational goals while benefiting from experiential learning opportunities.

According to Ashlin, research conducted by Mann et al. (2021) supports the benefits of incorporating outdoor education into the school curriculum. Studies have shown that outdoor learning improves physical, cognitive, and emotional health, enhances communication and reasoning abilities, and develops resilience, collaboration, and selfregulation skills. These findings underscore the relevance of outdoor learning in contemporary education, positively impacting mental health and well-being.

“Our camps include activities that children of all abilities and levels can enjoy”

Guardians of Our Planet

Outdoor camps foster environmental stewardship among students by immersing them in natural settings and engaging them in hands-on experiences. These camps encourage students to respect and protect natural habitats, instilling values of environmental stewardship and empowering them to take action to preserve natural resources for future generations. By spending time outdoors, students develop a deeper connection with the environment as they observe its beauty, diversity, and fragility firsthand.

“Our camps emphasise environmental preservation and consciousness, encouraging students to practice principles like ‘Leave No Trace’ by picking up after themselves and minimising environmental damage,” Ashlin explains.

Where Everyone Belongs

Schools can ensure that outdoor camps are accessible and inclusive for all students by welcoming individuals of all genders, ethnicities, and physical abilities. Prioritising inclusivity creates an environment where every student feels welcome and supported.

“Our camps include activities that children of all abilities can enjoy. For example, children with physical disabilities can participate as cheerleaders for their team or provide advisory roles in activities like raft building. Our outdoor instructors undergo extensive training to support individuals of diverse abilities, making the experience adventurous, educational, and fun!” Ashlin concludes.

UAE Athletes Pick Up 18 Medals in Taekwondo at the Gulf Youth Games

The first Gulf Youth Games in the UAE saw the host nation win a total of 18 medals in taekwondo, including four golds.

Along with the leaders of other Gulf federations, Dr Ahmed Hamdan Al Zeyoudi, President of the UAE Taekwondo Federation, was present at the event.

With 124 competitors, both male and female, the taekwondo competitions got underway with great energy. The first day was fiercely competitive, with 70 matches taking place for each gender in 10 weight divisions, with the UAE collecting four golds, 11 silvers, and three bronzes on its home soil. Oman won five medals (four gold and one silver), Saudi Arabia won nine (three gold, four silver, and two bronze), and Kuwait won 16 (seven gold, two silver, and seven bronze).

Amongst the standout performances for the UAE, Maitha Rashid carried the day in the junior women’s under-44 kg category, while Marwa Zuhair showcased her prowess in the under-47 kg division. Sharifa Ismail demonstrated remarkable skill in the under-55 kg weight category, while Nasser Ahmed Al Muhairi excelled in the junior men’s under-49 kg division, further adding to the nation’s success.

Sustainability in Education

Welcome to The Repton Family of Schools Virtual Media Roundtable! This engaging forum brought together three educators to discuss pivotal topics shaping the school experience and offering a holistic perspective on educational advancement. Join us as we look closer at this collaborative space, attended by Education UAE, with the first topic, led by Gillian Hammond, the Chief Education Officer of Excella and Principal at Repton School Dubai, on the subject of sustainability in education.

Gillian Hammond (Chief Education Officer of Excella and Principal at Repton School Dubai): This is a topic that I feel passionately about. We often have very ambitious targets for ourselves, and sustainability is one of them. It’s one that we’ve started to discuss with the authorities too, which, via their DSIB inspections, are starting to inspect us on sustainability and want to see what evidence we’ve got to show that we’re educating our children on this. So, it’s a very important topic for schools. And the question that we often get asked by other local schools is how do you educate students on this? What are you guys doing?

Firstly, the ‘how’ - we would highly recommend schools set up an ecocommittee, comprising students, staff, and parents. You need staff members who are really excited by sustainability in the school and who’ve got a bit of knowledge themselves. We then did an audit of our school to see how sustainable we already were, and what more we could do, and we’ve used two different platforms to do that. We investigated the eco-school seven-step programme, and we also had a look at the Green School Award, which we’re aiming to achieve 75% of next academic year.

Having completed our audit, we’ve now developed an action plan with some key measurements in there, and what we decided to do was in line with the UAE’s own goals - we would like to have 30% clean power in the future. The UAE is aiming for 2050, and if we could run our three schools with 30% clean power, I think we’d be very, very proud. It would then mean that we would be contributing to maintaining that 1.5° temperature rise globally, which I think is crucially important.

Steve Lupton (Principal at Repton Abu Dhabi): We’re very fortunate to have many of our families and staff living on Reem Island, close to school. The vast majority of our students and staff walk to school or use scooters or bikes, which is great to see.

Gillian Hammond: We put in bike racks in each of our three campuses to encourage that too. I’m glad you mentioned the staff because we do have a rule regarding the distance that our staff can cover. We don’t want them to have to travel too far, so we have a radius of how far away they should live from the school to try to reduce that.

We are considering and looking into green roofs too, as it’s another way for us to help reduce our carbon footprints and to become net zero. We have flat roofs on all our campuses where we can do that and we would love to explore more solar panels. Another project that the students are doing is generating power from the fitness suite because they’re all in there on the treadmills, on the rowing machines, and on the bikes. And you can hook these up to generators that will produce power, and that is what we’re looking to do during the next academic year.

Education UAE: Gillian, do you get other schools or organisations asking your students or committee to talk to them and share their initiatives?

Gillian Hammond: That's a great question. We've worked with a couple of supermarkets because we’re so committed to buying locally, we want to celebrate the produce that is produced here in the UAE. Our students have been to visit some of the organic farms and are very passionate about the possibility

Gillian Hammond, Chief Education Officer 

of growing their own food, and we know that some of our parents do that already. I believe we’ve generally seen some lightbulb moments where children think, “Huh, so, when I eat that pineapple, it has usually come from overseas. It has flown 20,000 miles....” And it blows their minds. It does help them to realise that, if we create the right environments within our own home countries, most of this food can be grown by the local farming industry.

If we could run our three schools with 30% clean power, I think we’d be very, very proud

Education UAE: I find it frustrating that some of these supermarkets boast online that they’ve got the best strawberries flown in from such-and-such a country, on the other side of the world. What a statement to make in this day and age.

Gillian Hammond: I think because of the education that we’re doing with our students, they are picking up on this more and more. We’ve heard quite anecdotally from parents that sometimes when they are in the supermarket, their children will remind them, “Don't buy those blueberries because they’re not locally sourced. They don't come from the UAE, or even close to the UAE.” We are trying to do our bit and make an impact, but there’s more to do.

Steven Lupton, Repton Abu Dhabi, tell us about how you develop a growth mindset in students and staff for positive engagement.

Steve Lupton: The mindsets of our students and our staff are underpinned by our school culture. I’ve spoken broadly at several conferences this year on the importance of this, which I would define as the conscious and unconscious beliefs of people within a group setting and how this leads them to think and perform.

In a school with 95 different nationalities, we’ve been committed to developing our school culture so that all participants in our school know what our school culture is and can buy into it. If you think of a Venn diagram, there are three circles where that overlap between staff, students, and parents is very much what we believe is our school culture. That is primarily based on respect across

Officer of Excella and Principal at Repton School Dubai

all levels and all interactions between staff, students, parents, cleaners, and everyone within our building.

Moreover, we were one of the first schools in Abu Dhabi to appoint a specialist wellbeing leader for our staff, which thankfully happened just before Covid, and it was indispensable during that period. We were awarded a Teachers Alliance Gold award for our well-being initiatives during the pandemic. It’s something that I think a lot of schools have now picked up on, and they recognise that it is essential to have a well-being leader or a person on staff who specifically focuses on well-being. The engagement of parents is also really

We were one of the first schools in Abu Dhabi to appoint a specialist well-being leader for our staff and this happened just before Covid thankfully for us

important and is similar to what Gillian is saying about the sustainability aspect. We must educate not only students but parents also so that we’re coming at it from all angles to reinforce that learning and understanding.

We’ve hosted a new Repton talk series that was run over four weeks with keynote speakers to discuss the importance of nutrition and sleep in helping students achieve academically and to prepare them for exams. We’ve recently had 17 staff trained as mental health first-aiders across an intensive two-day training to support students, particularly adolescent students, as we have seen an increase in mental health challenges amongst adolescent students, particularly after post-Covid. We only had 16 spots for the course and we opened it up to parents who may also be interested in attending and we ended up with 59 applications.

Part of the session focused on the retention of staff in an industry that will be facing global recruitment challenges over the coming years. The UAE government is predicting the requirement of around 30,000 additional teachers by 2030. Young teachers are more selective about who they want to work for and part of developing and ensuring that we have a culture of respect also allows us to focus on retaining and recruiting the best young teachers. That has been evident in our retention rates over the last few years across the Repton group of schools. We’ve had a 95% retention rate of staff, which is outstanding and allows us the consistency and stability to provide excellent teaching and learning.

As part of your growth mindset culture, do you incorporate financial literacy into your curriculum?

Steve Lupton: We’ve been working with a prominent company within the UAE developing financial literacy skills for all of our students. I think more broadly within our growth mindset philosophy, our culture underpins all that we do at Repton and our values underpin our culture and one of our values is the growth mindset. We look strongly at the research and the evidence, and we explicitly teach our students about growth mindset strategies. Importantly, we model that as staff. We celebrate effort as much as we celebrate achievement.

Steve Lupton, Principal at Repton Abu Dhabi 

Gillian Hammond: Concerning financial literacy, over the past two years, we’ve been educating our students about Bitcoin. We’ve partnered with a company called Philcoin, with all of our House points being converted into Bitcoin, and then the company also donates an amount, and the winning House at the end of the year chooses which charity they donate that to. We also want our children to understand that we’re all very privileged and that we can do more to support those who aren’t as privileged and who need support. The fact that they can donate an equal amount to a charity of their choice after they’ve researched it is something that we become very excited about each year.

How will schools transform with the advancements in AI?

Hannah Cunningham (Head of Junior School at Repton Al Barsha): I find this a fascinating topic. When open AI burst on the scene with ChatGPT last year, I think it shocked the education world because all of a sudden, we had all of these tools at our fingertips, What unifies all educators, and fortunately at Repton our board and the people who influence our policies, is a recognition that this is not something that we can afford to ignore. We have no alternative but to explore and embrace this change because we know that this is going to be the future for all of our students, so now is the time to get on board with that and look at what we can do to ensure that our students are ready for the future. This is both in terms of their workplace and how they engage safely with this new, incredibly powerful tool.

Repton has always been keen to be at the forefront of all digital innovation, including our annual digital summit. Students used AI applications to solve real-world issues, which is just incredible. We’re also preparing for our creativity festival and we’ll be using AI to assist students in looking to develop their ideas with music, drama, and the arts, and that will engage with about 75 students from across schools in the UAE, which is really exciting. We’re using our knowledge base and our students and the wealth of expertise that Repton has to share to ensure that other students within the UAE have equal access to these really important learning opportunities.

I went into a lesson recently and they were exploring all the important mosques across the world, giving students opportunities that they just wouldn’t have access to if we didn’t

use and harness this technology. We’re using virtual reality in lessons, and augmented reality for traveling from Rome to Egypt, to explore all those fascinating places, that, again, our students may not necessarily otherwise have the opportunity to see in real life.

How do we ensure that our students are going to be prepared for the future when none of us knows what the future will look like?

Hannah Cunningham: It’s a huge responsibility that we have in our hands, but one that we take seriously, and we do in all sorts of ways.

by Dubai Schools

Dubai Cares, part of Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI), has mobilised the wider school community in Dubai in support of ‘Students for Students’, a community engagement initiative that offers students an opportunity to champion education for peers from low-income backgrounds.

In the first phase of the initiative, students from 14 participating schools organised a diverse array of events – from spring fairs to bake sales and games - to raise funds that were used to procure essential school supplies, including school bags and stationery, for underprivileged children. The participating schools have successfully raised AED 720,000 in total.

The activities saw the participation of thousands of students, teachers, parents, and family members who came together at the different schools to support the initiative and played a role in making a difference in the lives of children who do not have access to even the most basic school supplies.

In its second phase, the participating schools organised a ‘volunteer day’ to pack the school kits procured with the funds raised, a total of 9,000 school kits. Packing activities took place from 10 June until 25 June across the participating schools as

students will enthusiastically take on the role of volunteers to assemble the kits. Thereafter, Dubai Cares distributed the school kits to charity schools and organisations in the UAE, ahead of the new academic year.

THE INVISIBLE STRUGGLE

Addressing Teen Mental Health in Expatriate Communities

In the vibrant mosaic of cultures that define the United Arab Emirates, expatriate families from across the globe come together, seeking opportunities and a unique lifestyle. Within this diverse population, teenagers face a unique set of challenges. Adjusting to a new country can be a tumultuous experience for many, particularly adolescents who are navigating a critical phase of their personal development. The recent spotlight on teen mental health within these communities has ignited crucial conversations about the vulnerabilities and pressures faced by young expatriates. Addressing these issues with sensitivity and fostering a supportive environment to ensure their well-being is matter of urgent attention.

Understanding the Unique Pressures on Expatriate Teens

Expatriate teenagers juggle the universal struggles of adolescence against a backdrop of cultural adaptation and transient lifestyles. The initial excitement of living in an international setting is often shadowed by feelings of isolation, identity issues, and cultural dissonance. In a nation where expatriates form a majority of the resident population, these experiences are becoming commonplace, yet frequently overlooked. Living in a foreign country can entail significant emotional upheaval. The mental health of teens in such settings demands attention and understanding.

The lack of a stable support network, compounded by the pressure to adapt to a new and often vastly different environment, can lead to significant distress.

The additional layer of academic and social expectations can further aggravate feelings of anxiety and depression, making it imperative that these concerns are neither minimised nor dismissed. Adolescence is a seriously impressionable developmental period that is brimming with significant yet confusing physical, emotional, and social changes. During these formative years, teens are particularly sensitive to environmental stresses. Emotional and behavioural issues might not always be apparent to parents or teachers, as teens are often reticent about their struggles. The recent unfortunate incidents around us underscore the need to understand that teen mental health can often manifest in ways that might prompt extreme actions, such as running away from home.

Devika Mankani, Chief Positive Psychologist, Fortes Education

Shifting the Narrative on Mental Health

Historically, mental health discussions have been shrouded in stigma, particularly in multicultural contexts where perceptions of mental illness vary significantly. This stigma often ends up deterring teens from seeking the help they need as it engulfs them by fear of judgment or misunderstanding. Consequently, emotional and behavioural issues end up going unnoticed until they manifest in more aggravated ways. These are possibly symptomatic of deeper issues like anxiety, depression, or unresolved conflict. To counteract this, there needs to be a concentrated effort to normalise mental health discussions, ensuring that they are as integral to our conversations as physical health, for instance. Schools, as central community hubs, play a pivotal role in this transformation. By weaving mental health education into their curriculum, schools can uncomplicate mental health issues, thereby nudging and encouraging students to speak openly about their experiences and seek support without hesitation. We need to cultivate conducive environments where teens feel safe to express their fears and challenges without judgment.

Building a Supportive Ecosystem

showing empathy, and being receptive to their struggles. Workshops and resources for parents can equip them with the skills to support their children effectively and identify signs of distress early on. Such initiatives can considerably help mitigate feelings of isolation, providing youths with a network of peers and adults they can relate to and trust.

Towards a Future of Understanding and Support

Creating a nurturing environment for expatriate teens involves a multifaceted approach that bridges schools, homes, and the wider community. Schools and other academic institutions need to realise the need to be equipped with culturally sensitive and adolescent-friendly counselling services that respect the diverse backgrounds of their students. These services need to extend beyond the school gates, integrating into community centres and online platforms where teens spend much of their time. At home, parents can do wonders by fostering open communication by actively engaging in their children's lives,

By acknowledging the unique pressures these youths face and dismantling the barriers to mental health support, we can pave the way for a future where no young person feels alone in their struggle. Ensuring the mental well-being of expatriate teens is more than a matter of policy—it compels us for a commitment to understanding, empathy, and action that must be embraced by all sectors of society. It becomes our moral duty in a way to try and ensure that every adolescent, regardless of their background or circumstances, genuinely feels that they have the support and resources they need to thrive. The recent troubling events in the UAE's expatriate community call for a compassionate, informed response. As a society, our ability to safeguard our youth starts with understanding and addressing their mental health needs proactively and effectively. This not only helps in preventing such incidents but also supports the overall development of a more resilient youth population. Looking ahead, it has become imperative to be guided by a deep sense of inclusivity and support, recognising that caring for our youth's mental health is the foundation of a strong, resilient community. The conversation does not end here; it's only just begun.

Adventure Awaits in the Garden!

Originally released as an independent illustrated book, Nelly Jelly, known as Kakė Makė locally, has sold approximately 2.3 million copies of its primary picture book series. Its top titles have achieved print runs of 30,000 copies, significantly surpassing the average of 3,000 copies per book in its home country. But that, it seems, is only the beginning, with the brand now looking to engage children with a new campaign that will help to prize them away from their electronic gadgets and into the garden!

Education UAE spoke to NJ World CEO Simona Krasauskienė to find out more.

Education UAE: Can you elaborate on the potential impacts of excessive-tech usage on children’s well-being, and how Nelly Jelly programmes address these concerns?

Simona Krasauskienė: Recent research shows that children who spend too much time on screens are more likely to have poor social skills and lower cognitive abilities. From 4 to 6, children rapidly develop their brains and cognitive skills. It means that they need to explore their surroundings using all their senses to learn about the world, so they need to interact in real-life activities with their families.

Recent research shows that children who spend too much time on screens are more likely to have poor social skills and lower cognitive abilities

We live in mixed reality, however, unlimited time spent on tablets is surely harmful to children, especially preschoolers.

The Gardenland (Sodolendas) project offers a gardening tool collection for Gen Alpha children and their families. The goal is to invite the whole family to spend time together outside, it fosters re-connection between family members, involves kids in outdoor activities, and teaches them about sustainability in the best way possible.

We released a unique cookbook that revolutionises traditional children’s books. It’s called Kakė Makė. In the Kitchen with Alfas Ivanauskas is interactive, has intriguing DIY recipes, and captivating food servings, and invites children to watch fun and colourful video tutorials on how to do it.

Education UAE: How do you ensure that your nature-based activities are appealing to children, especially those accustomed to digital entertainment?

Simona Krasauskienė: It is obvious that the Alpha generation enjoys spending time in front of screens, so we offer them engaging real-life activities, combining elements from the meta world. We make our products look appealing and enjoyable for the Alpha generation.

Simona Krasauskienė 

The seeds in our gardening collection differ from ordinary ones - they have playful names, colourful packaging, and informative resources. Our gardening collection transitioned from being a playful and colourful product to a fun family activity.

We believe children like to copy adults, so we created a project that involves parents, grandparents, and educators.

To make the experience even more engaging in this campaign, we presented special loyalty games. For example, one of them was a giveaway of a greenhouse, where children could grow vegetables.

Education UAE: What strategies do you employ to help children develop a deeper appreciation of nature?

Simona Krasauskienė: Firstly, the Gardenland project provides children with gardening kits and tools to engage them in planting and caring for plants, learning about plant life cycles, biology, and ecology enjoyably. Gardenland’s collection has 35 different items, including 18 types of seeds for vegetables, flowers, and herbs, ready-touse gardening kits, gardening tools such as watering cans, buckets, rakes, spades, and products for active leisure.

We also highlight the importance of quality family time, encouraging families to spend more time together outside and get children off screens. This helps to strengthen family connections and teaches children to value nature.

The children of Gen Alpha really care about sustainability and the planet, the food they consume, and where it comes from. Already 81% of their parents say their Alpha children have influenced their actions or consumption decisions, making them more environmentally aware. So naturally, we give children what aligns with their core values and promotes sustainability and environmental care in our products and campaigns.

Education UAE: Can you tell me about your loyalty programme, which includes a special gardening collection?

Simona Krasauskienė: Our loyalty programme is based on a partnership with one of the major retail chains in Lithuania, ‘IKI’. The retailer was looking for new

Children learn about the life cycles of plants, biology, ecology, and nature in general in a practical and fun way

promotion ideas, and we had an offer that would benefit parents, families, and children by getting them involved. Since it was the gardening season, we collaborated to create a unique promotion - a three-month digital loyalty campaign offering a discount gardening tools from the Gardenland collection.

As part of this campaign, we introduced a digital solution on the “IKI” app where you can collect e-stickers and unlock discounts on a complete collection of seeds, shovels, and buckets. The most valuable aspect is that this promotion is eco-friendly, as there’s no need for paper stickers, so tech-savvy Gen Alpha children are enjoying it too. We are proud of this digital solution because we are pioneering with it in Lithuania, as it just emerging globally.

Our Gardenland publishing programme features activity books, a garden encyclopedia, and YouTube shows. We are committed to producing more content on these topics for the future Beta children generation. We are taking steps to expand our reach from publishing to digital content and beyond.

Education UAE: Could you provide examples of successful outcomes or testimonials from children and families who have participated in your initiatives?

Simona Krasauskienė: Monika Vilčinskaitė, well-known local influencer, has been using gardening items from the Gardenland collection to educate her two sons about growing their own plants and caring about them. She shares her educational videos on our YouTube platform telling what the family have planted, explaining the process, and showing the results.

Monika runs an Instagram account named ‘Living in a Farmhouse’, followed by 29.1k people in Lithuania, to inspire others to embrace country living. She advocates for a peaceful lifestyle and promotes the idea of slowing down in a fast-paced world.

We frequently receive feedback from families who have used Gardenland gardening products, sharing pictures of their cultivated plants and planting experiences.

Education UAE: How do you collaborate with educators and parents to reinforce the message of balancing technology use with outdoor experiences?

Simona Krasauskienė: We engage with them via YouTube, where we create and show educational videos to share information with children, and we inform parents through social media, influencers, PR, and other marketing tools.

Also, we create interactive books that offer alternatives to screens, and our product development focuses on fun activities for families with children. All of them are unique because they come in different interactive formats, including ‘touchable’ books, ones with a QR code, and audiobooks.

We plan to release 17 more books this year, covering topics like education, emotional intelligence, self-knowledge, and creativity. We have three book categories based on children’s age and characters, and we will introduce a new category in 2024 called ‘Learning to Read’.

2.3 million copies sold

Education UAE: Can you describe any partnerships or collaborations you have with local communities or nature organizations to enhance the impact of Nelly Jelly’s programmes?

Simona Krasauskienė: We are currently experiencing growth on multiple platforms in our local market - we have a bestseller book series, written by initial author Lina Žutautė, theatre plays, events, and a blockbuster movie in 2023. This familyfriendly film features six adventures filled with humour, antics, and valuable lessons.

But what I would like to highlight even more is that currently, Nelly Jelly is entering the global market in the animation industry, presenting a new seven-minute pre-school comedy TV show in collaboration with the British animation studio ‘3Megos’. The series is about the world of an intelligent, determined, strong little girl, Nelly Jelly, who often embarks on adventures with her

imaginary monster friends, Jim and Jam. The show combines elements of music, fun, surprises, and comedy, making it ideal for family co-viewing, especially Gen Alpha preschoolers aged 4-6.

Built upon the principles of Gen Alpha and future Gen Beta, who prioritise diversity and equality, our international audience will meet Jim, a fluffy pink male monster who is highly analytical and loves books, and Jam, a super-strong green female monster whose main role is to protect Nelly Jelly and spread positive energy.

There is already a trailer released for the show, which along with the scripts and storylines for the co-production, will be revealed this June at the Annecy Film Festival. The finished show is planned to be released globally in Q3 2025. The series will have 26 episodes, each lasting seven minutes.

Education UAE How do you envision the long-term impact of your efforts in encouraging children to connect with nature, both on an individual level and in terms of broader societal attitudes towards technology and the outdoors?

Simona Krasauskienė: The idea behind Gardenland’s campaign is to encourage children to spend more time outdoors and gain valuable life skills by taking care of their own vegetables and plants. Children learn about the life cycles of plants, biology, ecology, and nature in a practical and fun way.

Such initiatives foster critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and curiosity. It encourages children to be more responsible, inspires physical activity, and teaches them to consume more fruits and vegetables. Taking care of your well-being is the most important skill to learn in the early years.

We encourage families to spend quality time together through enjoyable activities that strengthen bonds not only with parents but also with grandparents and other family members.

The story follows a young girl called Olive, who asks lots of questions but has never asked what her Mummy does all day. Based on Farmer’s own experiences of motherhood - she is a mum to two daughters who ask a thousand questions a day - the book aims to help parents who struggle to answer their kids’ questions about what they do when they can’t see them.

Created for busy mums and curious kids, My Mummy’s Secret Adventures opens up questions about what Olive’s Mummy might do during the day, but also how little readers’ own mums might spend their time, while also giving some inspiration for future jobs. As she excitedly interrogates her Mummy about her secret life, Olive’s imagination runs wild. Does her Mummy have a job? And if so, why?

Explaining the motivation for the story, Helen said, “Books can be a wonderful way for parents to broach some tricky topics with their kids and start a conversation about something they’re struggling with.

Created for busy mums and curious kids

As a working mum myself, I’ve struggled to answer questions on what I do when the children can’t see me during the day. It’s surprising how many children genuinely think that their mum sits outside their nursery or school in the car waiting for them all day.”

The book features beautiful illustrations by Pavithra Suresh, which bring the story and its characters to life. Published by The Dreamwork Collective, My Mummy’s Secret Adventures was launched in front of an audience of parents and children during an event staged at The Garden Concept in Dubai.

As her first children’s book My Mummy’s Secret Adventures is an extension of Farmer’s authentic and relatable take on life and motherhood, which is enjoyed by thousands of followers around the world through her Instagram page. With another story in the works, Farmer said, “Expect to hear from Olive’s little sister soon.”

My Mummy’s Secret Adventures is available at amazon.ae where it is currently listed as the number one bestseller in literature and fiction for children.

Prenatal Brain Development and Healthy Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a journey of incredible connection; one that fosters a solid bond between the mother and child. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, which includes proper nutrition, regular exercise, and positive mental well-being, can boost a baby’s development, creating a stimulating environment and enhancing their overall health and intelligence. While most traditions offer ageold wisdom and guidance to expecting parents, there is now a wealth of information from books, social media, and the Internet on the dos and don’ts of prenatal care.

While most of them focus on their baby’s physical development, parents must know that we can contribute immeasurably to a baby’s cognitive development in utero. Brain development starts as early as the third week of pregnancy. From then, the rate of cognitive functioning rapidly increases, giving rise to sensory development and even abstract thinking. By the end of the third trimester, brain development is advanced enough to allow the baby to interpret sight and sounds, and distinguish languages, preparing them for the cognitive stimulation they will receive after birth.

As young parents, we want to do everything to give our children the best start to life. Fetal development is an amazing phase that determines so much about a child, including personality traits, disposition, likes and dislikes, eye and hair color, and, most significantly, cognitive functioning. It is essential that we stimulate the baby’s brain in the womb, so the baby benefits during these extremely crucial early phases of life.

Brain Development Through the Trimesters

 The First Trimester – Right from the initial weeks of pregnancy, the baby’s brain begins its development by supporting foundational growth with the formation of the spinal cord. This enables the foetus to make its earliest movements.

 The Second Trimester – The brain’s size and complexity increase rapidly during the second trimester. The baby begins to process sensory information from its environment, enabling them to hear sounds. They also start to recognise their mother’s voice.

 The Third Trimester – At this stage, the brain’s functioning has become so complex that the baby can respond to external stimuli. They now possess the physical and cognitive capabilities needed to survive after birth. Shortly after being born, the brain is prepared to support early learning and adapt to the significant changes in the new environment.

How to Support Your Baby’s Cognitive Development During Pregnancy?

Communicate with Your Baby Bump Bump chats are a proven way to bond with your baby. You can talk, sing a song, read, or simply tap to make sounds to engage with the baby. They listen to the mother’s heartbeat all day long, and consciously communicating with the baby can encourage a few kicks and movements. As early as the second trimester, babies can hear sounds and recognise voices. This early introduction to words and sounds can help with language acquisition and word recognition.

Brain development starts as early as the third week of pregnancy

Engage in Regular Physical Activity

Engaging in exercise during pregnancy can enhance a baby’s overall development. It boosts blood circulation, providing the developing brain with essential oxygen and nutrients. Physical activity helps reduce stress and improves the mother’s mood, creating a beneficial environment for the baby. Staying active supports the baby’s brain, including its ability to recognise and form memories about its surroundings. Remember to continue your routine if you were active before pregnancy. If you are new to exercise, start slowly and listen to your body. Safety is of utmost importance.

Capitalise on the Positive Effects of Music

Although there is a raging debate on whether playing Mozart for your unborn baby can boost their intelligence, it is widely accepted that music offers benefits for both the mother and the child. Especially classical music can be relaxing and help the unborn baby become acquainted with various sounds and tones. In some cultures, music is associated with creativity and academic success in children, and it is common to see pregnant women taking up instruments like the piano.

Consume a Nutrient-rich, Balanced Diet

It is no surprise that consuming fresh and nutritious meals is essential for a baby’s brain development in the womb. While there are arguments that suggest that the quantity of food must increase through pregnancy, it is important to focus on a balanced, quality diet that contributes holistically to the mother and child’s health. Incorporate vitamin-rich

Incorporate vitaminrich foods into your diet and supplement with recommended prenatal vitamins

foods into your diet and supplement with recommended prenatal vitamins to aid in forming healthy brain cells for your baby. Essential nutrients such as folate, choline, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids are crucial for cognitive development.

Prioritise Rest and Sleep

Pregnancy can be physically demanding for the mother, making downtime crucial. Remember that you are resting for two, so staying well-rested is essential. Sleep not only enhances your mood and strengthens your immune system, but also improves the chances of a healthy birth. Adequate sleep allows your baby’s brain to develop properly and reduces the risk of postbirth developmental issues. As pregnancy progresses, finding a comfortable sleeping position can become challenging.

Avoid Stress

Prenatal stress is dangerous as it can lead to problems with concentration, mental health, and negatively impact the baby’s immune function later in life. Elevated stress can impede cognitive development and the baby’s overall health. There is also the risk of having preterm labour or the baby being born with a low birth weight. Consciously minimise stress and anxiety-inducing situations. Mothers must be mindful to reduce their workload, if necessary, and practice relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises, journaling, and meditation to counter any negative physiological reactions.

Six Middle Eastern Schools Win in First ever Tes Awards for International Schools

Seven schools and six teachers have won awards in the inaugural Tes Awards for International Schools. The awards programme builds on the success of the UK’s prestigious and long-running Tes Schools Awards, dubbed ‘the Oscars of education’.

These 13 winners were selected by an independent panel of expert judges from 96 shortlisted schools located across the globe. Regionally, six awards were won by schools in the Middle East, five in Asia, one in Africa, and one in Europe.

How Femique is Putting Moms First Again

After falling pregnant with my first child, it became apparent to me that the design of maternity wear was not created to suit the shape of a woman’s body, particularly during pregnancy, postpartum, or for nursing. And it certainly wasn’t made to make women feel beautiful and comfortable. The products were often cheaply made, with thin materials that gave no sense of support or comfort to the body. Clasps were made out of plastic that could easily break after manoeuvring. This had me thinking, was I the only one who noticed this, or had women simply accepted it? This is when the idea of Femique was born.

Our hope was to create beautiful designs, including day bras, night bras, and nursing tops made from soft lace and stretchy cotton, providing the ultimate dream combination of comfort and luxury, with the goal of empowering women and normalising breastfeeding. Women should not have to feel like they need to compromise with looks even though they are pregnant or breastfeeding.

It is no secret that once baby is born, mothers are often forgotten or at least very neglected. We forget to look after ourselves and so do the people around us. It suddenly becomes all about the baby and what they need. So, I created Femique along with my business partner, as a sort of tribute to women, to tell them that we see you, we feel you and we’ve got you.

It is no secret that once baby is born, mothers are often forgotten or at least very neglected
Women should not have to feel like they need to compromise with looks even though they are pregnant or breastfeeding

It is our mission to make women feel seen again and I think the launch of our new maternity collection has helped us achieve this, by creating a beautiful and comfortable range of nursing underwear that is functional and yet beautiful too, with the hope of making women feel chic in what is maybe one of their most challenging times.

Women have been the drive and passion behind Femique from the very start and have continued to be so each and every day. From two mothers to another, we look forward to making other mothers feel beautiful and seen at every stage of their life.
