New Schools Set to Open in Dubai and Abu Dhabi Starting

from 2024/2025

These new schools are designed to meet the increasing demand for high-quality education in the UAE, offering a range of curricula including British, American, and International Baccalaureate programmes

GEMS Founders School, Dubai South.

This new branch of the GEMS Founders School is opening in Dubai South, near Expo City. It will initially serve students from FS1 to Year 8, with a planned capacity of 2,500 students. The school will offer the UK curriculum and plans to expand to Year 13 in the coming years.

GEMS Founders School, Masdar City, Abu Dhabi.

Located in the eco-friendly Masdar City, this school will open with a capacity of 2,100 students from FS1 to Year 8, eventually expanding to Year 13. The school emphasises sustainability, with a net-zero energy campus.

Al Ain English Speaking School (AAESS), Abu Dhabi.

Noya British School, Abu Dhabi. This school will be located on Yas Island and is part of Aldar Education’s expansion. It will offer the British curriculum to around 2,300 students from FS1 upwards.

Masdar Ignite School, Dubai. Ignite School is expanding with five new campuses across Dubai, providing American curriculum education while incorporating UAE and Islamic values.

Gordonstoun Abu Dhabi.

Scheduled to open in 2024, this prestigious UK-based school will bring its educational approach to Abu Dhabi, offering a blend of the UK curriculum and UAE Ministry of Education standards, with a capacity of 2,000 students.

Rashid and Latifah School, Dubai.

Scheduled to reopen in 2024, RLS is the premier choice for families seeking an educational institution that prepares their children within a nurturing environment and a profound dedication to excellence and unparalleled standards.

Dubai British School, Jumeira.

This new addition to the Taaleem group's portfolio will open in Al Safa, Dubai. It will offer the UK curriculum and is expected to accommodate 1,600 students, initially covering FS1 to Year 6.

Dubai offers many beaches and beach clubs. While some may find the heat overwhelming, many will want to soak up the sun immediately. Thankfully, there are both paid and free beach options. Here are some of my free favourites

Kite Beach

A favourite among expats, Kite Beach is popular for windsurfing, running, and walking. Limited facilities, but great cafés like SALT. kitebeach.ae

Deira Public Beach

A recently renovated beach with dogfriendly access. Set to become popular, with upcoming improvements to the running track. deirabeach.ae

JBR Beach

Tourist-heavy but convenient with many facilities and restaurants. Close to Bluewaters and Marina Mall, but often crowded. jbrbeach.com

Barasti Beach

Located in Dubai Marina, Barasti is a free beach club with a pool, alcohol service, and surprisingly good food. barastibeach.com

I spent far too much money and made mistakes that would cost me. Whether it was going to somewhere when I could have got it cheaper elsewhere or going to the wrong mall, I could have saved. Here's some tips I always share.

Homebox

I relied heavily on Homebox when first in Dubai, finding most of my affordable furniture and kitchen goods there. Preferred over IKEA for cost. homeboxstores.com

Owned by the same company as Homebox, Homecentre is slightly pricier with furniture similarly priced to IKEA but offers different styles. homecentre.com

Is Your Child Starting School this September?

Starting school in September can be an overwhelming experience for both children and their parents. The transition from the familiarity of home to the structured environment of school often brings a mix of excitement and anxiety. However, with the right preparation and mindset, this period doesn’t have to be fraught with worry.

“With just a few weeks left before your child starts ‘big school’, it’s the perfect time to focus on making this transition as smooth and positive as possible,” says Charlotte, Training Director at Education CPD. “The shift from preschool or home life to primary school can be both thrilling and daunting for young children. To help them approach this new chapter with enthusiasm and ease, there are several steps you can take.”

“Many parents often worry that their children need to master their ABCs, basic numbers, and essential vocabulary before starting school. While foundational academic skills are important, reception teachers prioritise other qualities that are equally crucial for a successful start. It’s crucial, for instance, for children to have mastered the ability to use the toilet independently. While the thought of asking for help might make them feel a bit shy, reassure them it’s perfectly okay to ask for help when needed.”

Empowering Kids with Every Button and Zip!

Adjusting to a new environment can make little ones anxious, and it’s not uncommon for occasional accidents to occur during the first few weeks. However, being toilet trained and able to manage bathroom needs on their own is essential for a smoother school experience. If you encounter any challenges with toilet training or have concerns about your child’s readiness, don’t hesitate to reach out to the school or seek support from relevant organisations. Ensuring your child feels confident and capable in this area will help them focus on all the exciting new adventures that school has to offer.

Being able to dress themselves is another crucial step that helps children feel more ‘grown-up’ as they head off to school. Imagine a bustling gym with over 20 energetic children getting ready for PE—it can quickly become chaotic when teachers are trying to assist each child with shirts, shorts, and shoes. To make things easier, consider using shoes with Velcro fasteners, which are simpler for young hands to manage.

Reading books together is a wonderful way to enhance their communication abilities

To prepare your child for this scenario, practice getting dressed and undressed together. Start with small, manageable steps and offer support when needed. Gradually, and with patience, help them develop the skills to dress themselves independently. Incorporate these practice sessions into their nightly bedtime routine and morning preparations.

If you find that your child still struggles despite regular practice, again, reach out to the school for additional support or resources. Consistent practice and a bit of encouragement will help your child build confidence and ease into this important skill.

Start School with a Smile

Building strong communication and social skills is essential for children as they start school. They need to make friends, interact with peers, and express their interests to their teachers. To help your child develop these important skills, it’s crucial to foster regular conversations and provide ample opportunities for social interaction.

Engage in meaningful dialogue with your child by discussing various topics, including their daily experiences and personal interests. Reading books together is a wonderful way to enhance their communication abilities. Make it a habit to discuss their day, introduce new words into your conversations, and use these moments to enrich their language development. Organise playdates with other children to provide your child with practical opportunities for social interaction. These playdates help them practice sharing, taking turns, and cooperating with their peers.

The tips above offer a glimpse into how you can help your child ease into their reception year. Focus on nurturing their independence rather than stressing over academic skills -teachers are well-equipped to handle the educational side of things.
