KHDA hosts inaugural event in E33 CoLabs series to shape the future of education

Aisha Miran: Together, we are shaping a future where education is impactful, inclusive, and lifelong, and where Dubai continues to lead the world in innovation and excellence

In November, more than 200 educators, parents, students, and policymakers from Dubai’s private education sector came together for the inaugural E33 CoLabs session, engaging in workshops and discussions aimed at accelerating the implementation of Education 33 (E33), Dubai’s transformative new education strategy.

The event marked the launch of E33 CoLabs, a series of collaborative sessions designed to refine and implement projects under the E33 strategy. The first session highlighted the strategy’s progress, showcasing how E33 is not just a vision but a strategy already being implemented to create meaningful change in Dubai’s education system.

Launched in October by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, E33 reimagines education by placing the learner’s journey at the heart of its vision. It represents a shift from a traditional, institution-centric model to a learner-centric ecosystem tailored to the needs and aspirations of every individual. The E33 strategy is aligned with the goals of Dubai Plan and the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, as well as the Dubai Social Agenda.

The collaborative sessions are designed to refine and implement projects under the transformative E33 education strategy

Speaking at the event, Her Excellency Aisha Miran, Director General of the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), emphasised the importance of collaboration in shaping the future of education, highlighting the collective spirit that shaped the creation of the E33 strategy.

She noted: “E33 is not just a plan on paper – it is a strategy in action. It is built on the foundation of collaboration, which has always been the hallmark of our education community. Today, we are bringing this spirit to life, transforming classrooms, empowering parents and teachers, and ensuring that every learner is prepared not just for today’s challenges but for tomorrow’s opportunities. Together, we are shaping a future where education is impactful, inclusive, and lifelong, and where Dubai continues to lead the world in innovation and excellence.”

Game Changer Initiatives

Twenty-eight Game Changer initiatives are being rolled out in several phases to support the E33 objectives, redefine educational experiences and outcomes, and foster innovation and excellence across all levels of education. Several Game Changer initiatives have already been launched, including Al Freej Nurseries, Dubai Flagship University, All Rise and Excel Anywhere.

At the first E33 CoLabs event, participants worked together to develop solutions and prototypes for 10 of the 28 Game Changer initiatives. These initiatives focus on areas such as raising the quality of education for Emirati students through tailored support, positioning Dubai as a highly sought-after destination for teachers, preparing talented Emiratis for leadership roles in government and the private sector, elevating vocational training standards, enhancing the wellbeing of learners and educators, and empowering parents to actively support and guide their children’s education journeys.

The spirited discussions and workshops enabled educators, students, parents, and thought leaders to develop actionable solutions and prototypes, ensuring that E33’s initiatives are both practical and impactful.

Her Excellency added: “We are incredibly grateful for the enthusiasm and contributions from everyone who participated in our inaugural CoLabs event. The success of this event highlights the strength of our education community, and

we are excited to continue collaborating with educators, students, and parents to refine and implement the E33 strategy. This is just the beginning of an ongoing journey to implement E33’s vision and create a brighter future for every learner.”

From early learning through to higher education and beyond, the E33 strategy will ensure students are well-equipped with the skills and opportunities they need to succeed at every stage of their life and become impactful contributors to Dubai’s future.

Cancellation of the Emirates Standardised Test (EmSAT) for Twelfth Grade Students

Overview

The Emirates Standardised Test (EmSAT), a key assessment tool for twelfth-grade students in the UAE, has been officially cancelled. This decision marks a significant shift in the educational landscape, as the EmSAT was originally designed to evaluate students' academic readiness for higher education and to ensure alignment with national academic standards. The cancellation has sparked discussions among students, parents, and educators regarding its implications.

Background of the EmSAT

Introduced as a replacement for international standardised tests such as the SAT, the EmSAT aimed to provide a UAEspecific measure of academic proficiency. The test assessed core subjects including Mathematics, English, Arabic, and Science, and was a mandatory requirement for university admissions and some employment opportunities within the UAE.

The test served as a critical benchmark for evaluating the readiness of Emirati students to enter higher education, aligning with the country’s goals of fostering a knowledgebased economy. However, concerns over its effectiveness and the burden it placed on students have been longstanding.

Reasons for Cancellation

The Ministry of Education has cited several reasons for the cancellation of the EmSAT for twelfth-grade students:

 Evolving Educational Needs: The educational sector in the UAE is undergoing continuous reforms to align with global best practices. There is a growing emphasis on skills-based learning rather than test-based assessments.

 Student Wellbeing: Concerns about the pressure and stress associated with high-stakes standardised testing have led to calls for alternative methods of evaluating student performance.

 University Admissions Reforms: Many universities in the UAE are transitioning to more holistic admissions processes that consider a wider range of factors, including school grades, personal statements, and extracurricular achievements.

 Technological Advancements: The increased integration of digital tools and artificial intelligence in education has paved the way for more dynamic and personalised methods of assessment.

Implications of the Decision

The cancellation of the EmSAT has several implications for students, educators, and the broader educational ecosystem:

 For Students: Twelfth-grade students will now focus on their final school examinations, which are likely to carry greater weight in determining university admissions. This change may reduce the overall testing burden but could shift additional pressure onto school assessments.

 For Universities: Higher education institutions may need to adapt their admissions criteria to accommodate the absence of a standardised national test. This could include greater reliance on internal placement tests or interviews.

 For Educators: Teachers will need to adjust their teaching strategies to ensure students are adequately prepared for the new assessment framework, placing greater emphasis on holistic learning and critical thinking skills.

 For Policy Makers: The Ministry of Education must now focus on developing alternative assessment tools that align with the UAE’s long-term educational goals while addressing concerns about fairness and accessibility.

Reactions to the Cancellation

The decision has received mixed reactions from various stakeholders:

 Students and Parents: Many students and parents have welcomed the cancellation, viewing it as a relief from the additional academic burden. However, some have expressed concerns about the lack of clarity regarding alternative assessment methods.

 Educators: While many teachers support the move towards holistic assessment, some worry about the potential challenges in maintaining standardisation and ensuring that students are adequately prepared for university-level studies.

 Higher Education Institutions: Universities have acknowledged the need to adapt their admissions processes, with some institutions already exploring alternative methods of evaluating applicants.

The cancellation of the EmSAT for twelfth-grade students signals a shift towards a more flexible and student-centred approach to education in the UAE. While the decision has been broadly welcomed, it also presents challenges that will require careful planning and collaboration among stakeholders. As the UAE continues to refine its educational policies, the focus must remain on equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Premium British Approach to Learning BC Academy Nursery follows the wellestablished British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, but with a modern twist that incorporates the latest educational practices. The EYFS framework covers

five key areas of a child's development: communication and language, physical development, personal, social and emotional development, literacy, and mathematics. At BC Academy, every activity, every game, every moment is designed to fit into the broader educational process, supporting not just academic learning but also emotional, physical, and social growth.

BC Academy is the place where children grow with love. BC is absolutely the best experience for your child.

EMBRACING DIFFERENCES

The Role of Diversity Education in Early Childhood

Nurturing Empathy, Inclusivity, and Respect in the Early Years

IIn an increasingly interconnected world, teaching children about diversity is not just important—it is essential. Early childhood is a formative stage where young children begin to explore and understand the world around them. By fostering an appreciation for diversity from the outset, we empower children to grow into empathetic, respectful, and socially responsible individuals prepared to thrive in multicultural environments.

WHAT IS DIVERSITY EDUCATION?

Diversity education helps children understand, appreciate, and respect differences in culture, language, race, abilities, gender, and more. It is about creating an inclusive environment that reflects the diverse society we live in while equipping children with the socialemotional skills to navigate it. Through age-appropriate activities, stories, and interactions, diversity education introduces fairness, equality, and empathy.

WHY START EARLY?

Research shows children begin noticing differences as early as infancy, and by preschool age, they can develop biases based on observations or media exposure. Addressing diversity during this critical stage prevents prejudices from taking hold while fostering tolerance, empathy, and strong communication skills.

THE

1. Fostering Empathy and Compassion

Listening to stories from diverse backgrounds helps children empathise with others' experiences and appreciate different perspectives.

2. Breaking Stereotypes

Early exposure normalises differences, reducing the risk of internalised stereotypes and encouraging curiosity over judgement.

3. Encouraging Critical Thinking

Learning about different cultures inspires questions and curiosity, promoting critical thinking about the world.

4. Strengthening Social Skills

Interacting with diverse peers builds essential skills like collaboration, communication, and problemsolving.

5. Building Self-Confidence and Identity

Representation in classrooms helps children feel valued and celebrated for their unique identities, fostering confidence and self-esteem.

HOW TO INCORPORATE DIVERSITY EDUCATION IN EARLY CHILDHOOD

 Representation in Classroom Materials: Include books, toys, and visuals that reflect a variety of cultures, languages, and experiences.

 Celebrate Cultural Traditions:

Explore festivals like Diwali, Eid, or Lunar New Year through storytelling, crafts, and food tasting.

 Encourage Open Conversations: Create safe spaces for honest discussions about differences, answering questions positively.

THE WAY FORWARD

 Model Inclusivity: Adults should model inclusive behaviour, kindness, and respect for all.

 Engage Families: Invite families to share their traditions, enriching the classroom experience and strengthening home-school connections.

At Dibber International Preschools, we believe that early exposure to diversity fosters empathy, breaks stereotypes, and builds a sense of belonging for all children. By prioritising diversity education in the early years, we nurture compassionate, open-minded individuals who will positively contribute to society.

COMMUNITY AND CULTURE

This term has been filled with events that celebrate culture, creativity, and community. From UAE Union Day and Primary Project Landings to the Science Symposium, Winter Recital, and Sea School, our students have showcased their talents and passions across various platforms. Arbor also hosted the BSME Climate Conference in November, which saw schools from across the region join us to explore via student led activities, debate and call to action initiatives, how we need to be the voices of today to ensure that there is a healthy tomorrow. Finally, Arbor’s first honey harvest of the season was a tangible example of sustainability in action, where students engaged hands-on with eco-friendly practices.

LOOKING AHEAD

With so much achieved in Term 1, the Arbor family eagerly anticipates the opportunities that Term 2 will bring. As Principal Gemma Thornley reflects: "A school is nothing without community, and Arbor has this in abundance."

Arbor School continues to set a benchmark in nurturing environmentally conscious, academically excellent, and future-ready students, true to its mission of preparing learners for a rapidly changing world.

Two Nord Anglia Education schools in the Middle East

celebrate recognition in the world’s top 150 private schools for the fourth year running

Swiss International School Dubai and Nord Anglia International School Dubai have been recognised among the Top 15 schools in the Middle East and Top 150 in the world.

Nord Anglia Education, one of the world’s leading international education organisations, today announced that Swiss International School Dubai (SISD) and Nord Anglia International School Dubai (NAS Dubai) are ranked among the top schools in the Middle East and the world.

Global education consultancy, Carfax Education, has released its eagerly anticipated fifth annual Schools Index, a renowned international index of the world’s top 150 private schools.

In a glowing report on Swiss International School Dubai, which has been shortlisted in the Schools Index four years in a row, the Index authors state: “SISD stands out in the region for its trilingual curriculum, offering German, French, and English language streams. With this multilingual option it is not surprising that the pupil body is very diverse and international, with the majority hailing from Europe and the US. The school is academically selective yet

inclusive, contributing to its strong sense of internationalism.”

And in an equally glowing report for NAS Dubai, the Index authors note: “NAS Dubai continues to expand as its popularity grows, with families drawn by the innovative teaching, the top-quality facilities and the warm and friendly atmosphere. NAS Dubai takes a future focus on education, encouraging all pupils to be design thinkers and creative problem solvers and they have been quick to evaluate and adopt AI tools to personalise the pupils learning.”

In addition to formal criteria, such as academic performance and university preparation, the Schools Index evaluates schools on their unique ethos, reputation, and how they prepare pupils for life beyond academia, as well as on technology and sustainability. The Schools Index also provides a comprehensive overview of curriculum, fees, and practical details such as proximity to local airports.

Rob Walls, Managing Director of Nord Anglia, Middle East, said: “It is testament to our outstanding teachers, students, and parents that two of our schools within the Nord Anglia Education Middle East family of schools have been recognised by Carfax Education again, among the Top 15 schools in the region. We are delighted by this recognition for Nord Anglia International School Dubai as it celebrates its 10th anniversary and for Swiss International School celebrating its 10th anniversary next year.

“This acknowledgment highlights our over 100 nationalities achieving high academic outcomes and going on to their university destinations of choice, equipped with creativity, resilience and confidence to make their mark on the world, and leaving school with everything they need to succeed in life.”

Schools listed for 2024 are chosen because they provide exceptional education for pupils, with Al-Jadaff based Swiss International School Dubai’s Principal, Ruth Burke, commenting: “We are delighted to be featured for the 4th time in The Schools Index, a testament to the world-class education we provide. Being recognised in this prestigious list is especially meaningful as we continue to grow and prepare to celebrate our 10th anniversary next year.

“SISD has become one of the Middle East’s leading international day and boarding schools, with a diverse student body representing over 100 nationalities and consistently securing top university placements for our graduates. Our ongoing expansion underscores our commitment to innovation and excellence, while being part of the Nord Anglia Education family offers an even greater platform for future growth.”

Matthew Farthing, Principal of Nord Anglia International School Dubai, said: “We’re honoured to be recognised for the second year in a row as one of the region’s top schools. Our success reflects our unwavering commitment to academic excellence and the life-enriching experiences we offer. These experiences truly set our students apart in today’s competitive global landscape.”

Fiona McKenzie, Head of Education, Carfax Education, said: “Now in its fifth year, The Schools Index has become a valuable resource for parents looking for the very best education for their child, wherever they are in the world – as well as for the private schools sector. The demand for excellent schools grows and remains fiercely competitive as parents strive to ensure their child receives the strongest foundations to set them up for a lifetime of success. The importance of parents having The Schools Index has grown, as families become more mobile and can choose to work from anywhere in the world.”

Empowering Futures

Al Mizhar

At GEMS Founders School Al Mizhar, education goes beyond textbooks and traditional academics. This year, under the inspiring theme "Empowering Futures," the school has launched a Life Skills initiative designed to equip students with practical abilities and essential knowledge for real-world challenges. One of the standout sessions recently featured Ian, The Mobile Mechanic, who conducted a handson workshop for students, teaching them basic car maintenance skills. Education UAE Presents an Exclusive Interview with Synergy University

Dubai

Andrew Vitiuk, CCO of Synergy University Dubai, Shares Insights into Innovation, Academic Excellence, and Preparing Students for Global Success.

Shaping future leaders with its unique blend of entrepreneurial education, practical learning, and international standards

Education UAE is thrilled to announce an exclusive interview with Andrew Vitiuk, CCO of Synergy University Dubai, where he discusses the institution's vision, cutting-edge initiatives, and the unique opportunities it provides to its diverse student body.

Education UAE: What inspired your transition to the commercial side of higher education, and how has it shaped your approach as CCO at Synergy University Dubai?

Andrew Vitiuk: Since childhood, I’ve been passionate about creating websites and solving problems which sparked my interest in how communication can bridge knowledge gaps. Nearly 10 years ago, I joined Synergy University Dubai, where I realised my

skills could thrive in a corporate environment driven by innovation and strategy. As Head of Student Recruitment and Marketing, I leverage modern technologies and communication strategies to enhance student engagement, improve recruitment and make quality education accessible to a wider audience. This role allows me to combine my technical expertise with my passion for education. I also had a unique work-study experience at Synergy University. While employed, I enrolled in several of the university’s programs, attending courses at Synergy Business School. This combination of work and study enhanced my personal development and significantly propelled my career forward.

Andrew Vitiuk, Chief Commercial Officer 

Education UAE: How do you balance Synergy University’s mission of transforming lives with the business needs of running a competitive educational institution?

Andrew Vitiuk: At Synergy University Dubai, we align our financial strategies with our mission by investing in programmes that address real-world student needs and local job market demands. We offer courses in fields like full-stack development, global economy, sustainability, innovative entrepreneurship, and hotel management, which contribute to both local and global job markets. Dubai’s focus on sustainable development, innovation, and tourism makes it the perfect setting for these programmes. We also track global job trends to stay ahead of the competition. Above all, the student experience is central to our operations, ensuring our offerings remain relevant and valuable.

Education UAE: In terms of the Saudi hospitality industry, are you seeing a lot of students coming from Saudi Arabia?

Andrew Vitiuk: While Saudi Arabia isn’t

our largest source of students, we do have students from there, and we’re noticing growing interest. To tap into this potential, we’re planning to open a representative office in Saudi Arabia to increase our recruitment efforts. The hospitality sector is thriving, and we believe that offering programmes tailored to the needs of the region will attract more Saudi students to Synergy University.

Education UAE: You’ve been instrumental in positioning Russian education in the UAE. What were the biggest challenges, and how did you overcome them?

Andrew Vitiuk: Positioning our curriculum in the UAE presented challenges, including overcoming stereotypes, cultural differences and regulatory complexities. A major obstacle was establishing trust in the quality and relevance of our curriculum. We addressed this by emphasizing transparency and ensuring that, while our curriculum is Russian, it meets international standards, with fully accredited Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD and MBA programs.

Our motto, “Education is transformation”

A key distinction is the value we offer. Our bachelor’s programs require 280 credit hours double the typical British program at half the price, with tuition around $5,000 per semester. This makes quality education more affordable. We are committed to connecting students with the job market through collaborations with the government and local businesses, enhancing career success. This approach strengthens Synergy University’s reputation in the region by attracting students who might otherwise struggle with tuition costs.

Education UAE: What sets Synergy University Dubai apart from other universities in the UAE? What is the core ethos of the institution?

Andrew Vitiuk: Synergy University Dubai stands out for its unique combination of global perspective and regional relevance. While many universities focus on either international standards or local needs, we integrate both. Synergy is not just a university but an entire ecosystem, including subsidiaries like our business school, startup accelerator, travel agency, and more, creating a network that benefits students through lifelong learning. We also emphasize entrepreneurial education, particularly through our Startup Booster programme, where students develop their thesis into real-world startup projects. The most promising ventures receive investment, ensuring that our graduates are prepared to launch businesses or secure high-paying jobs upon graduation.

Education UAE: How does Synergy University align its curriculum with international standards to prepare students for global job markets?

Andrew Vitiuk: At Synergy University, we continually align our curriculum with international standards, benchmarking it against industry leaders and working with

global accreditation bodies. We focus on practical, hands-on learning through realworld projects and internships. Our motto, “Education is transformation,” underpins our approach. We incorporate case studies in the classroom and equip students with indemand skills in technology, innovation and entrepreneurship. By fostering a mindset of lifelong learning, we prepare graduates not only to be job-ready but to lead and innovate in an interconnected world.

Education UAE: What unique opportunities does Synergy University offer in entrepreneurial education and industry partnerships that differentiate it from competitors?

Andrew Vitiuk: Synergy University Dubai offers a unique ecosystem for entrepreneurial education and industry engagement. Initiatives like the Mega Campus Summit 2024, the Synergy Pilot Business Incubator and the thesis-asstartup model set us apart. The Mega Campus Summit, a flagship event connects students with global business leaders, entrepreneurs and experts featuring keynote speakers like Nassim Taleb and Robin Sharma.

Andrew Vitiuk: Synergy University Dubai attracts students from the UAE, CIS countries, Africa, Asia, Europe and beyond, creating a diverse and vibrant campus. Our events department organizes a variety of activities that allow students to network, make friends and engage with different cultures. With representative offices in countries like

From the Mega Campus Summit to the Synergy Pilot Business Incubator, students gain hands-on experience and mentorship to turn ideas into thriving startups

Uzbekistan, India and China, we source international students from all over the world, ensuring a truly global campus environment.

Education UAE: What support systems or initiatives are in place to help international students adjust and thrive in Dubai?

Andrew Vitiuk: Supporting our international students is a priority at Synergy University Dubai. We also facilitate connections with top professionals who share valuable insights in our classrooms.

Education UAE: Can you highlight a few success stories of students or alumni who have significantly benefited from their time at Synergy University?

Role of Universities in Preparing the Future Workforce

Vanessa Northway, Executive Director of Education and Student Life, Heriot-Watt

The past few years have seen the job market evolve unprecedentedly, driven by rapid technological advancements and shifting industry demands. Skills once highly sought after may no longer align fully with today’s rapidly evolving job market demands. This makes upskilling more crucial now than ever. Organisations aiming to enhance their efficiency and secure longterm success recognise the pressing need to invest in reskilling and upskilling their current workforce. As industries embrace technological advancements and adapt to shifting market trends, staying ahead requires a workforce with the right skills to navigate these changes.

The global job market is undergoing a paradigm shift. Automation, artificial intelligence, and the green economy are reshaping job roles across industries.

The World Economic Forum predicts that by 2025, half of the global workforce will require reskilling due to technological advancements. To prepare for the future, individuals and organisations must prioritise reskilling and upskilling, embedding professional development as a core component of workforce planning. Universities play a pivotal role in providing relevant skills that meet the changing landscape of workplace needs by offering updated programs and curricula designed to equip learners with the skills required to grow in an evolving job market. For instance, Heriot-Watt University provides executive education programs for industry and government entities, which are curated specifically to cater to their needs and to prepare our students as well as the wider industry with bespoke solutions to be future-ready. It is crucial to ensure these learning opportunities are accessible, widely available, and affordable for all. In the UAE, the job market is being further aligned with national goals such as the UAE Centennial 2071 and the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031. These initiatives emphasise the development of sectors like renewable energy, space exploration, advanced healthcare, and smart cities. Roles in data analysis, AI, digital marketing, cybersecurity, and sustainability are expected to see high demand, while traditional roles may evolve to incorporate new skill sets.

Academic institutions in the UAE offer innovative and industry-aligned programs to meet the changing demands of the job market. For instance, Heriot-Watt University Dubai offers cutting-edge Post Graduate programs in these areas, ensuring students are ready for the future and capable of meeting industry expectations. Some of the top programs for 2025 include Energy, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Construction Project Management, Real Estate, Interior Architecture and Design, Business Analytics and Consultancy, Business Psychology, International Business Management with Marketing, and Finance and Management.

Heriot-Watt University is at the forefront of preparing students for the future workforce through innovative strategies and a commitment to academic excellence. By fostering industry connections and emphasising real-world applications, the university ensures its graduates are equipped to excel in their careers and future-ready as well as future-proofed. Moreover, recognising the financial barriers that can impede access to education, Heriot-Watt University offers a range of scholarships to support students in their upskilling journey.

These scholarships are tailored to reward academic excellence & merit, encourage diversity, and assist those with financial needs. Key scholarship opportunities include;

AMANDA HAMILTON-RUSHFORTH OF ZAKS UNIFORMS

Leading the Charge in Sustainable Fashion and Education in Dubai

ZAKS Uniforms, is setting new standards for sustainable fashion in Dubai, guiding families, educators, and businesses towards a more eco-conscious future.

Amanda Hamilton-Rushforth from ZAKS leads the Charge in Sustainable Fashion and Education at the Swiss International School.

With years of expertise in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and a deep commitment to sustainable consumerism, Amanda is spearheading initiatives that educate and empower consumers to make environmentally friendly choices in their daily lives.

As a leader in sustainable fashion, Amanda Hamilton-Rushforth focuses on creating practical, accessible ways for people to incorporate eco-conscious habits into their wardrobes and lifestyles. Her approach offers clear, actionable steps for anyone looking to reduce their environmental footprint, from families seeking affordable ways to shop sustainably to educators inspiring the next generation.

Sustainable Fashion Basics - Where to Begin

For those embarking on their sustainable fashion journey, Amanda advises keeping in mind a few key principles. “Start with small, manageable steps, like choosing quality over quantity and supporting brands that prioritise ethical practices. Opting for natural, biodegradable materials can also make a significant impact,” she explains. Amanda believes that even modest changes, such as buying fewer, better-made pieces or supporting local businesses, can drive positive change over time.

Building a Sustainable Wardrobe for Kids

Amanda is particularly passionate about helping parents foster sustainable habits in their children. Recognising the rapid pace at which kids outgrow clothes, she offers practical advice for creating an eco-friendly wardrobe. “Buy pieces that are versatile and made to last, and consider organising clothes swaps with other parents to circulate items within the community. It’s a costeffective and sustainable way to refresh your child’s wardrobe,” she suggests.

The Role of Education in Sustainability

Amanda also sees an important role for educators in promoting sustainable fashion among young people. She believes that schools can inspire a shift towards sustainability by integrating activities and projects that encourage mindful consumerism. “From hands-on projects like upcycling old clothes to discussions about the lifecycle of products, educators can help young people develop a sustainable mindset early on,” Amanda notes.

Navigating Greenwashing in Fashion

With greenwashing becoming increasingly common, Amanda offers guidance on how consumers—especially parents—can identify genuinely sustainable brands. She advises looking for transparency in a brand’s supply chain and certifications from reputable organisations. “Educate yourself on the brands you support and question their claims. A truly sustainable brand will provide clear information about its sourcing, materials, and production processes,” she says.

Amanda Hamilton-Rushforth , ZAKS

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Fashion

Drawing from her background in CSR, Amanda believes fashion brands have a responsibility to educate consumers about sustainable practices. “Brands should go beyond marketing buzzwords and actively inform consumers about the environmental impact of their choices. I admire companies that invest in educational campaigns and social initiatives, as they pave the way for a more responsible fashion industry,” she explains.

Mindful Shopping and Sustainable Consumerism

Shopping sustainably can sometimes feel daunting or expensive for families, but Amanda offers reassurance that eco-friendly choices don’t need to break the bank. “Start by adopting a ‘less is more’ mindset, focusing on quality over quantity. Thrift shopping, buying second-hand, and repairing items rather than replacing them are all affordable ways to support sustainability,” she advises.

Future Trends in Sustainable Fashion

Amanda is excited by several emerging trends in the fashion industry, including advancements in recycled materials and circular fashion. “Innovations in fabric technology, like biodegradable and fully recyclable materials, are incredibly exciting. These developments have the potential to reshape the industry and make sustainability more accessible to everyone,” she adds.

Practical Advice for Teachers

For teachers interested in encouraging sustainable habits in their classrooms, Amanda suggests hands-on lessons that bring sustainability concepts to life. “Introduce projects like creating art from recycled materials or hold discussions on how consumer choices impact the environment. These lessons not only educate but also empower students to make more conscious decisions,” she says.

Leading Sustainable Initiatives at ZAKS

Uniforms

Under Amanda’s leadership, ZAKS Uniforms has launched various sustainability initiatives that reflect the brand’s commitment to reducing environmental impact. From incorporating eco-friendly fabrics to engaging in community-driven projects, ZAKS is dedicated to setting an example for sustainable business practices in Dubai.

As ZAKS Uniforms continues to grow, Amanda remains committed to her mission of promoting sustainable fashion and educating consumers. Through her efforts, she aims to make sustainable fashion accessible and achievable for families, schools, and businesses alike.

Exploring the World, One Family Trip at a Time

Samina Khanyari, General Manager of Jumeirah International Nurseries, shares her expert tips for travelling with children.

Traveling with children can seem overwhelming — endless packing, detailed planning, and the inevitable unpredictability. Yet, as someone with over 25 years of experience in early childhood education, I can assure you that these adventures are among the most enriching gifts you can offer your child/ren.

One of my most cherished memories is a family trip we took when my children were just three and six years old. Initially, I was anxious about leaving behind our familiar routines, but as we navigated bustling airports and new surroundings, I watched our hesitance transform into wonder. Every moment, from exploring new environments to experiencing different ways of life, was a spark for their curiosity.

Travel is a powerful teacher. It opens children’s eyes to the diversity of people, traditions, and experiences in the world. My children were fascinated by everything they encountered — new foods, unique ways of doing things, and the warmth of connecting with others in unfamiliar settings. These experiences taught them about embracing differences and the beauty of exploring the unknown.

Beyond this, travel builds life skills. On one trip, a common travel hiccup occurred: misplaced luggage. Instead of letting it ruin the day, we treated it as a game, using creativity and teamwork to adapt. It turned into an adventure, teaching my children the importance of flexibility, problem-solving, and finding joy in simplicity—skills that have served them well in every area of life.

Travel also strengthens family bonds. Away from the distractions of daily life, it offers parents and children the chance to truly connect. Shared adventures, like

Travel is a powerful teacher, opening children’s eyes to the diversity of people, traditions, and experiences in the world
From flexibility to empathy, travelling nurtures life skills that no textbook can provide

discovering hidden treasures or trying something new together, create cherished memories that last a lifetime. These moments become the foundation of a strong and enduring relationship.

Perhaps one of the greatest gifts of travel is how it nurtures empathy. It allows children to see how others live, celebrate, and overcome challenges, fostering a deeper understanding of the human experience. They learn that while people may look or live differently, the values of love, hope, and community are universal. These lessons encourage compassion and open-mindedness, shaping children into thoughtful and respectful individuals.

As parents and educators, we have the privilege of preparing children for the world. Travel,

even to a nearby destination, offers a wealth of experiences that no textbook can provide. It shows them that the world is vast, exciting, and full of opportunities to grow and connect.

Looking back, those trips were more than just holidays—they were transformative journeys. They gave my children the confidence, curiosity, and empathy to navigate life’s adventures. So, my advice is simple: take the leap. Whether it’s a weekend escape or a long-haul adventure, traveling together is a gift that keeps giving.

Pack your bags and explore the world with your children. One trip at a time, you’ll discover not just new places but also the boundless potential within them—and within yourselves.

Shared adventures create cherished memories, strengthening family bonds away from the distractions of daily life

Inspiring Young Minds - Emirates

Literature Foundation Ignites a Love for Stories and Creativity

When it comes to reading, students have always been presented with distractions. Before the convenience of streaming and gaming apps on smartphones, there was the allure of television and video games in homes.

To help educators cut through this noise and help their students foster a deeper connection with stories and the ideas that live within them, the Emirates Literature Foundation has developed a few different programmes.

One of them is the award-winning Voices of Future Generations Arabia story-writing competition, which is centred on the United Nations’ Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs) as a way to promote awareness of global challenges and inspire kids to incorporate sustainability into their own lives. In each cycle, children aged 8 to 12 are invited to submit short stories inspired by specific SDGs, with the winning entries becoming featured in a published anthology where each story is also illustrated by a UAEbased illustrator.

But unlike other writing contests where participation ends upon submission, the VoFG team have designed a Gifted Writers Programme for participants who show promise even if their stories aren’t selected as winners. These young writers then receive constructive verbal and written feedback and are encouraged to refine and resubmit their work, nurturing their talent beyond the competition itself.

The VoFG competition runs alongside the Foundation’s other student competitions, culminating in a celebratory book launch at the annual Emirates Airline Festival of Literature This event connects young authors to the larger literary and publishing world, giving them a taste of what it means to be part of the creative industry.

The Voices of Future Generations Arabia competition uses storytelling to inspire sustainability in

children aged 8 to 12

However, the festival’s offerings for young minds don’t end there. The Emirates LitFest’s in-person student sessions are a series of curated events in both Arabic and English, featuring speakers from across the Festival lineup. These sessions offer students the chance to step outside their classrooms, meet authors and creators, and engage in discussions that bring the concepts in their books to life. It also allows them to ask questions in a way that reading alone doesn’t offer.

The LitFest’s in-person student sessions bring books to life with curated talks by renowned authors and creators

And because the festival is also home to storytellers who may express themselves in ways other than the written word, the Foundation also offers opportunities for students to step into the LitFest limelight. Schools can apply to showcase their students’ flair for music, dance, and performance on the Festival stage as part of the Fringe Stage: Spotlighting Young Performers Programme.

The Foundation also understands that not every school might be able to attend the LitFest in person, so they also offer the option for educators to submit a free bid for the chance to have one of the LitFest authors visit their school. Not only does this give a larger group of students a chance to experience the magic of a literary festival, but it also helps spark curiosity and excitement around reading

From writing competitions to live events, the Emirates Literature Foundation knows that the key to inspiring the next generation of readers, writers, and storytellers is to provide them with once-in-alifetime experiences.

Experience The Wonders Of Turtle

Nesting and Hatching Season at Waldorf Astoria Seychelles Platte Island

The Waldorf Astoria Seychelles Platte Island, is thrilled to welcome visitors to witness the sea turtle nesting season – a true spectacle of the natural world.

Between September and March, Platte Island becomes a vital nesting ground for critically endangered hawksbill turtles, with hatchlings appearing daily during peak season.

Platte Island, a crucial breeding location for hawksbill turtles between September to March, provides a unique opportunity to watch these critically endangered marine animals come ashore to lay her eggs.

As Platte Island’s only resort, Waldorf Astoria Seychelles Platte Island plays a crucial role in the conservation of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) and hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata). Hawksbill turtles usually lay their eggs from September to March, with peak hatching activity occurring between late November to mid-January. During this period, guests can expect to see hatchlings emerging from their nests on a daily basis. Guests can look forward to enhanced opportunities for turtle sightings yearround, following safety viewing protocols, particularly during the green turtle season, which spans from January to September.

Under the warm sand, after two months of incubation the eggs hatch, and the hatchlings make their way to the water. Guests staying on the island will too have the opportunity to observe this phenomenon as the hatchlings make their way to the ocean, especially before sunset. Guided by the resort’s conservation team, visitors can view turtle tracks, and nests, and follow emerging hatchlings on their journeys along the beach, all while gaining insight into the island’s conservation initiatives.

To enhance their turtle-watching experience, guests are encouraged to participate in guided beach walks led by trained staff.

The

resort’s conservation team invites guests to join guided beach walks and nest monitoring activities, offering an intimate glimpse into vital sea turtle conservation efforts.

Offering valuable educational insights into the island’s role in the preservation of the Seychelles' sea turtle populations, the guided walks also give guests the chance to observe the turtles without disrupting their nesting or hatching activities or impacting their welfare.

Platte Island is home to a turtle monitoring programme that plays an essential role in uplifting national and global conservation initiatives. Data collected during the hatching season contributes to broader efforts to protect these endangered species. Guests passionate about conservation will also have the opportunity to assist our team with nest monitoring activities, offering an intimate experience and a deeper connection to the island’s important conservation work.

We invite our guests to experience the aweinspiring journey of the Seychelles’ sea turtles and be part of our efforts to protect these magnificent creatures for future generations.

Can Women Really Look Like Jennifer Lopez at 50?

Sarah Lindsay, a three-time Olympian, is not just any personal trainer; she’s a fitness icon in her own right. With a glittering career as a speed skater, Sarah boasts an impressive track record as a European gold medalist, twotime world silver medalist, and a 10-time British champion. Her athletic prowess has made her one of London’s most sought-after personal trainers, working with celebrities like Ellie Goulding, Mel B, Pixie Lott, Christine Lampard, and many more.

Sarah’s passion for health and fitness is infectious. As a true advocate for a balanced and healthy lifestyle, she combines her years of experience, discipline, and motivation to inspire others to reach their peak potential. Whether it's helping someone transform their body or supporting them on their fitness journey, Sarah is the epitome of dedication and empowerment.

An exclusive Q&A with Sarah Lindsay explores her expert advice on how women can achieve a fitness level that emulates the strength and vitality of Jennifer Lopez at 50. “How Can Women Really Look Like Jennifer Lopez at 50?”

From Speed Skater to Fitness Icon, Sarah Lindsay’s Inspiring Journey

Education UAE: What do you think is the most important factor in maintaining a youthful physique as you age?

Sarah Lindsay: Weight training. The biggest thing you can do for anti-ageing in general is to gain muscle. You naturally lose muscle with age, so you have to fight hard to keep it. When you lose muscle your metabolism slows, your BMR goes down, you lose strength and energy.

Education UAE: Jennifer Lopez is known for her toned physique. What exercises do you recommend for women who want to achieve similar results?

Sarah Lindsay: You’re going to start seeing a theme here but if someone looks fit and toned and they have a physique then they more than likely lift weights. Muscle is what gives your body the shape and the best way to increase muscle is to progressively overload it with weight.

Education UAE: How much of a role does nutrition play in looking fit and youthful in your 50s?

Sarah Lindsay: That’s a huge question and we could go down lots of avenues here. So much of your overall health comes from your food as this is where you get your nutrients from. It plays a role in gut health, hormone production, how you sleep and your recovery. This will show on your body in lots of different ways, from muscle tone and body fat to hair and skin elasticity.

Education UAE: What advice would you give to women who are starting their fitness journey later in life?

Sarah Lindsay: That depends on what their concerns are. We have lots of clients in their 60’s and a few in their 70’s and as time goes on I think more slightly older people will be training in the gym as we all know the benefits now. It’s never too late.

The Passion Behind a Balanced and Empowering Fitness Lifestyle

You might need to adapt exercise selection for aches and pains and take more recovery between sessions than someone in their 20’s or 30’s, but everyone belongs in the gym as far as I am concerned.

Education UAE: Jennifer Lopez is famous for her dance routines—how beneficial is dance as a form of fitness, and would you recommend it?

Sarah Lindsay: If you like dancing and you find it fun and you are more likely to stick to a regular routine, then it’s going to be more beneficial than running 10k 1 x per month. It totally depends on your goals and on the type of dance, but it will certainly improve coordination and cardio fitness.

Education UAE: What are the best strengthtraining exercises for women over 40 to maintain muscle tone?

Sarah Lindsay: The best actual weight training exercises are the ones that are

suitable for your body. The ones you can do with good form so that you can push yourself without high risk of injury. Try to cover all main movement patterns. A push, pull, squat, hip flexion, overhead press and an isometric core move will have a whole body covered.

Education UAE: How important is flexibility and mobility training for women as they age?

Sarah Lindsay: Personally, I’m not a huge fan of trying to increase flexibility unless it’s for a specific purpose. It’s a lot of time for not a lot of gain or use. Mobilising pre workout is very important to help prepare your body for training and good practice on rest days to help recovery, muscle soreness and avoid tightness.

Education UAE: What should women focus on more—cardio or strength training—to achieve that toned, fit look?

Sarah Lindsay: I never compromise my weight training. If we are simply talking about what the body looks like, muscle is what gives you the shape and athletic physique. It will also raise your metabolism and BMR so that dropping or maintaining body fat is easier.

Education UAE: How often should women in their 40s and 50s train per week to maintain a healthy, strong body?

Sarah Lindsay: Maintenance is easier than progress. I train 2-3 x per week which maintains a fairly muscular lean body. If I wanted to increase my muscle I would up this to 3-4. Daily activity of some kind will help keep your body lean and more importantly help you maintain a health focus to your daily life.

Education UAE: What’s your view on intermittent fasting or other dietary strategies that claim to support anti-aging and weight maintenance?

Sarah Lindsay: I think if you are going to fast then you should really research and understand why you are doing it and what it does and doesn’t do for the body. You can support weight maintenance and antiageing with nutrition, but any nutrition plan should be specific for you and not a generic plan plucked off the shelf.
