MANAGING DIRECTOR
GLASS THAT HEALS ITSELF THE WORLD IS MOVING ALONG AT SUCH A RAPID PACE THAT IT SEEMS IT IS SOMETIMES DIFFICULT TO TAKE A BREATH ... OTHERWISE, YOU’LL MISS SOMETHING! AALBORG UNIVERSITY (AAU) IN DENMARK, FOR INSTANCE, HAS RECENTLY ANNOUNCED THAT IT HAS DEVELOPED A NEW TYPE OF GLASS WITH SELF-HEALING PROPERTIES AND SUPERIOR CRACK RESISTANCE. THIS IDEA SEEMED A BIT FAR-FETCHED EVEN FIVE YEARS AGO. However, with a new understanding of how to reduce the brittleness of glass and improve glass flexibility, cracks in smartphone screens, scratches on eyeglasses and chips in car windshields may very soon be a thing of the past. Kacper Januchta, a PhD student in the Department of Chemistry and Biosciences at Aalborg University and author of an article just published in the journal Advanced Science entitled ‘Breaking the Limit of Micro-Ductility in Oxide Glasses’, explains: “Although we don’t think about this in everyday life, glass is actually not particularly fond of water, especially when it comes to cracking. Most of us have probably experienced a stone hitting the car windshield. What starts out looking like a small chip can eventually develop into a slowly growing crack. What happens is that water molecules from humid air break down the glass network and make the crack grow.” Personally, I didn’t know that. In fact, I’d never even thought about it, and I doubt that you have either. Interestingly, though, it turns out that unlike ordinary glass, the newly developed type of glass from Aalborg University has the special characteristic of water having a positive effect on the crack resistance of the glass; indentations and scratches in the surface do not, as they usually would, grow, but instead become smaller over time. The implications are substantial, for if the fragility of glass can be notably improved as a result of this breakthrough, it could ultimately mean significantly thinner glass in windows and car windshields. This is good news in a number of ways, not least because glass materials are produced at very high temperatures, and manufacturing and transporting thinner glass could potentially translate into energy savings and reduced CO2 emissions. This impressive new development is just one example of how the world is evolving, mostly in a positive manner, but not always. There are plenty of developments built solely around mankind’s greed, lust

DS: There is little time now-a-days to relax; we work 6 days a week. However I try to get a few rounds of go-carting in when possible. Recently I gave up squash (after a cancer scare). he LW Design story began when a group of friends discovered an opportunity to develop a design office based upon their
Scandinavian roots. Initially, the three founders had no understanding of how a creative business works, but soon learned that creativity needs to be channelled in a systematic fashion. Launching a company with no prior knowledge was the first test, but their determination helped them to get through challenging circumstances. There’s very little comparison between today’s world and that of 20 years ago; one example could be that, back then, LW Design relied on faxes, but now it’s LinkedIn, Instagram, and email. However, one thing that has remained consistent is how the field values a sense of trust in people rather than their qualifications. As a result, the joy of developing individuals as designers has remained at the heart of the firm’s ethos. In terms of projects, LW Design has most definitely experienced a shift in paradigms. Where it once served in the capacities of designers and architects, it now acts as operators and advisers, informing clients on how they can achieve the best results. Moreover, clients’ expectations have risen dramatically, as they follow new trends and concepts, with brands playing a major role in current developments. Today, LW Design has a strong reputation in the GCC – clients trust it implicitly. The firm has made a significant contribution to establishing high-quality projects and giving them distinct identities in line with the region’s culture. Ongoing Growth and Expansion From a small start-up, LW Design has grown into an international operation with offices in Hong Kong and Sao Paola. It is expanding into Europe too, with a Denmark office opening in February 2020. Starting out with projects in the Middle East, LW Design is rapidly tapping into new markets. For instance, it has recently designed the Raffles Hotel in Shenzhen and numerous F&B outlets in Vietnam – successful ventures like these are a reflection of Asia’s scope as a new market. In Europe, the firm is already completing a five-star resort in Montenegro. LW Design’s portfolio includes some of the world’s biggest brands, and it will continue to grow as it completes new successful ventures, such as the Edition Hotel in Dubai. Crucial to the firm’s success is how the entire team work as a family, having fun and being both focused and professional at the same time. And the partners would like to thank all of LW Design’s employees, former and current, for standing with them over the years. Some have been part of this incredible journey for the full 20 years, and this underlines how far the firm has come - today it is much more than just another company, it’s an innovative haven for creatives.

The idea presented by Dubai Municipality, which won in the ‘financial category’, focused on smart and sustainable systems in waste disposal sites, transforming traditional landfills into a smart and sustainable one through the use of electronic waste disposal and tracking systems, plus smart gates, to monitor and control the unauthorised entry of waste transport vehicles. It also reduces the amount of unauthorised waste to the landfill and the average entry time, extraction and burning of methane, as well as the generation of electricity from bio-derived gases. Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said: “Dubai Municipality is keen to embody the vision of the wise leadership in supporting innovation and creative ideas that contribute to the concepts of competitiveness, leadership, sustainability and quality,”

Turning Ideas into Action Kingspan Insulation’s portfolio of successfully completed projects is impressive, taking in several of the world’s most recognisable structures, not least the Burj Al Arab in Dubai, Louvre Abu Dhabi, and the Emirates Stadium in London, home to Arsenal FC. “Over the past several years in the UAE, we have worked closely with many architects and consultants at the specification stage, and contractors at site level, and have worked on many different projects throughout the region,” says Fakhri. “Some of the most recent notable projects are related to Expo 2020 and include those allied to infrastructure, Expo pavilions, hotels, and accommodation blocks. GCC HOSPITALITY CONSTRUCTION REPORT Q3-Q4 2019
COUNTRY BREAKDOWN
United Arab Emirates KEY OBSERVATIONS The UAE has 465 active projects with an estimated value of $216 billion. Projects worth $17.2 billion are expected to be awarded during Q3 and Q4 2019. The UAE accounts for the largest value of hospitality projects currently under construction in the GCC at 43%.
ANALYSIS & FORECAST The UAE remains one of the most competitive hospitality markets in the world. The buildup to the World Expo 2020 continues to be the main driver behind the UAE’s hospitality sector, causing the country to lead the GCC’s active project pipeline at 43%. More than 11 million foreign visitors are expected to visit Dubai during the six months of the megaevent from October 2020 to April 2021, versus almost 16 million visitors in all of 2018. Another factor influencing the UAE’s hospitality sector is the rising footfall from the mid-market segment from Asia and the Far East, which has
created demand for more midscale hospitality properties such as Rove by Emaar, Zabeel House by Jumeirah and Aloft by Marriot to name a few. While Dubai has firmly cemented its position as the shopping haven of the country, Ras Al Khaimah is working towards establishing itself as the adrenaline and adventure hub of the UAE attracting 1 million tourists in 2018. The launch of the RAK Development Strategy from 2019-2021 will see the emirate increase its room capacity by 75% from 6500 rooms to 11,500 rooms by 2022, as well as aim to draw 1.5 million visitors by 2021 and as many as 3 million visitors by 2025.
