BUTTERFLIES, CONNECTIVITY AND QUALITY OF LIFE DUBAI, 74TH IN THE WORLD, CONTINUES TO RANK HIGHEST FOR QUALITY OF LIVING ACROSS THE MIDDLE EAST, CLOSELY FOLLOWED BY ABU DHABI (78TH), ON THE PRESTIGIOUS MERCER GLOBAL QUALITY OF LIVING CITY LIST. In fact, connectivity is so important that it is now regarded as a human right by the UN, along with clean water, free education, and accessible healthcare. On the face of it, this is difficult to believe. But without access to the internet, much of contemporary society would come to a total stand still. For many people, the thought of leaving home without a smartphone or tablet, or having no internet access for a long period of time, is unimaginable. In today’s tech-driven world, the most up-to-date electronic gadgetry - whether it’s a smartphone, games console, or even a wearable device - are our constant companions and the new objects of desire for techsavvy consumers. These are part of fundamental changes in consumer behaviour, which has enormous

them rely upon connectivity. This is the ‘Connected World,’ where we are all plugged into everyone and everything. This connectivity continues to grow in importance too, as the ‘always-on’ mindset takes over and customer expectations keep rising. The present day consumer no longer goes by 9 to 5 business hours and wants to have the ability to communicate and interact with a business whenever they want, from anywhere, and they expect companies to be able to accommodate this. Just about every modern-day business needs to have strong connectivity to effectively communicate with customers and staff. It is critical for the day-to-day running of the majority of software, and ascertains how well companies can provide a service. As a result, organisations today disregard digital connectivity at their peril. If the flapping of a butterfly’s wings in Japan can trigger a tornado in Kansas, 140

DC: Since I began my career, I have always looked for projects that could impact positively on society, with their ideas, outlooks, and attitudes. I admit I have been lucky to be presented with the right opportunities. So, looking back, I see many projects I feel proud of, such as Roberto’s Restaurant in Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), which we designed in 2012 and had the honour of redesigning and refurbishing in 2018. Within a very short timeframe, just three months, we managed to achieve amazing results. Other projects include the award-winning Intercontinental Dubai Marina and 72 Hotel in Sharjah, in 2015 and 2016 respectively, and the Marriott Hotel in Kampala, the first one in the Sub-Saharan region. Of course, there have been many others too. EP: What have been your biggest challenges? DUBAI EXHIBITION CENTRE A KEY PART OF EXPO 2020’S LEGACY The Dubai Exhibition Centre (DEC) opens for business in October 2020, offering Expo 2020 Dubai participants, partners, government entities, industry associations, and event organisers access to a global stage for the six-month duration of the world’s largest meeting of minds and building on the already thriving exhibition and conferences sector in the UAE. Situated at the Expo 2020 site, the DEC forms a key part of Expo 2020’s legacy, where it will continue to serve District 2020, the integrated urban development that will repurpose more than 80% of Expo’s built environment. A crucial driver of growth in the business services sector, the DEC’s operation and expansion will attract both domestic and international visitors, and encourage a sustainable, resilient, and diversified economy in line with UAE Vision 2021, a set of national priorities to mark the country’s Golden Jubilee. Ahmed Al Khatib, Chief Delivery Officer, Expo 2020 Dubai, said: “By any standard, the Dubai Exhibition Centre will be a cutting-edge venue that will play a pivotal role during Expo 2020. But the impact of such a unique space will stretch well beyond the six months of the Expo, boosting the region’s meetings and events industry, furthering the UAE’s reputation as a destination for major conferences, and fuelling growth in Dubai’s knowledge-based economy for many years to come.”

AN IMMERSIVE DAY IN THE DESERT Dubai’s Department of Tourism & Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism) has extended its support to the launch of the new Al Marmoom Bedouin Experience, operated by Platinum Heritage. With the support of the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Centre, the project offers visitors a unique and authentic glimpse into the life of an Emirati Bedouin, with guests able to enjoy an immersive day out in the desert. The tour marks the first experience to be introduced as part of the new ‘Bedouin Collection’ on the roster of desert excursions currently offered by Platinum Heritage. The camp is built around an oasis, with the Bedouin village reflecting days gone by when the Bedouin would go in search of sources of water to help them survive the arid nature of the desert. The enchanting village features a tent where guests can enjoy authentic meals and educational activities, a traditional goat enclosure, Bait Al Sha’ar (authentic Bedouin tents), and Al Hathira (a traditional building with a hollow interior where Bedouin traditionally hosted their guests). Offering a unique adventure, the experience displays the significant elements of life in the desert, taking travellers back in time to highlight the cultural origins of the emirate. Guests are invited to sit in storytelling circles with Bedouins to hear magical tales and snippets of wisdom about their culture and heritage. Additional elements include a mesmerising falconry display and an Emirati Crafts Tour, showcasing the artistic flair from the nomadic community.

he firm’s founder, Hans Knoll, a member of the third generation of a family of furniture makers from the
German city of Stuttgart, went to live and work in the United States with the aim of implementing the ideas and forms of European design in the ‘New World’. Along with his wife, Florence, an active participant in the cultural movements of the time, Hans Knoll was, from the very beginning, committed to producing furnishings with contemporary and distinctive designs, made with the utmost attention to detail from the very finest materials. This encompassed furniture for the office or the home that stood out from the crowd because of its unique character and design, and was capable of interpreting or even predicting the development and evolution of lifestyles. From its US centre of operations, Knoll began to expand globally, well ahead of the competition. In 1951, the company set-up affiliates in France and Germany, eager to participate in the reconstruction of post-war Europe. For Florence, the chance to design the first European showroom in the dépendance of a cathedral in Paris, presented an exciting and tangible way to acquaint a new audience with the design and spirit of the Modern Movement. In 1956, their expansion in Europe continued with the opening of the first Knoll showroom in Milan, Italy. Focusing on elegant avant-garde design, Knoll achieved recognition and increasing success in the 1950s by working with some of the decade’s most dazzling talent, such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Marcel Breuer, Eero Saarinen, and Harry Bertoia. And of course, there was Florence Knoll herself who influenced modern culture with ‘landmark’ products that transformed the beliefs and definitions of the Bauhaus school into reality, driven by the notion of the consolidation of ‘art, industry and crafts’. Knoll has always stayed true to the original creed of the Bauhaus philosophy, which dictates that modern furniture should complete the

Leading architects and designers have continued to be drawn to Knoll, inspired by the firm’s continuing excellence and commitment to quality, based on the designs of Hans and Florence. Invariably in the design avant-garde, Knoll has consistently been able to keep the unique individuality of its timeless furnishings intact. Alongside the firm’s timehonoured products, which include more than 40 classics kept in the permanent collections of the world’s most important museums, new designs have constantly been added, merging innovation and technology, reflecting the brand’s ability to imagine personalised solutions, and bringing variety to suit diverse market sectors, both for the office and the home. Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality said: “This expansion will cover the Expo and other areas of development and can accommodate the continued and future population growth with high efficiency. It will also support the strategy of the provision and preparedness of infrastructure. The combined capacity of our plants in Warsan and Jebel Ali has reached one million cubic metres of wastewater per day. We have also reduced the cost of treating these cubic metres of wastewater to make this the world’s lowest expansion.” Al Hajri added: “What is unique about this project is the participation of a young UAE cadre of 13 engineers, including three females.”

DUBAI FRAME WINS AWARD Dubai Frame has won the ‘Best Leisure Tourism’ project award at the MEED Projects Awards. The recognition is in line with Dubai Municipality’s vision of building a happy and sustainable city through the development of leisure and public attractions. Eng. Talib Julfar, CEO of the Infrastructure Services Sector at Dubai Municipality, said that Dubai Frame has become one of the most modern cultural and entertainment attractions in the country since its opening in January 2018, and had attracted more than a million visitors from around the world within the first year of its opening. “It represents a magnificent landmark that captures fascinating scenes of Dubai’s old and modern city within one frame to form a bridge linking the emirate’s past with its flourishing present,” Julfar shares. “The most important feature of the Dubai Frame is the unique upper bridge, where the visitors’ walkway has been designed with smart glass panels to create a transparent floor and, as soon as you walk on it, it gives the sensation of walking on air, with a unique view of the surrounding area.

OPPORTUNITIES TO INVEST IN PARKS Najeeb Mohammed Saleh, Director of Planning Department at Dubai Municipality, said: “Dubai Municipality is making significant contributions by providing a conducive and encouraging environment for foreign and domestic investment, which will raise the Emirate’s GDP, enhance its economy, ensure that it maintains its competitiveness and leadership, and continues to make progress in all economic sectors to become the first choice for investors and business people looking for the best havens and investment opportunities.” Saleh explained that there are many investment opportunities available, including six major public parks: Creek, Zabeel, Mushrif, Mamzar and Safa, in addition to the Quranic Park, recently opened by Dubai Municipality in Al Khawaneej.

On asked what the biggest challenge faced by his counterparts in the UAE market is, and his advice on how he has managed to bring AIROLINK above such challenges, Dr. Anil explains, “Utmost dedication and focus in delivering quality and cost-effective service to clients while meeting deadlines consistently is what it takes to achieve success in UAE’s construction sector. Lack of liquidity is a major challenge faced by many in the industry. Although bank finance is available, it’s only for those contractors who have strong legacy of project deliveries. For contractors, financial discipline – or lack of it – is a major issue. Over the last few years, we have seen several construction companies gone down due to this simple factor.” AIROLINK has completed over AED5 billion of work and has another AED5 Billion

For independent, tech-savvy travellers who value time and efficiency, YOTEL offers a completely new hotel experience with everything that you need and absolutely nothing that you don’t. The 300 unit hotel at The Crescent, Nakhlat, Palm Jumeirah, is an excellent example of this philosophy. For by using its signature, cutting-edge style and design, YOTEL has created small but perfectly-formed cabins for guests who get pleasure from quality but do not need the fuss of a conventional luxury hotel. By taking out the pointless extras, YOTEL gives space for its guests to enjoy their stay in superior locations without having the superior prices. This six-floor hotel, plus ground, basement, and roof, features 270 Premium Rooms, 10 FirstClass Rooms, 16 VIP Suites, and four Disabled Rooms. has been entrusted by many prominent clients to take on a large number of highprofile projects that were large in magnitude and exceptionally diverse. Pace’s earliest projects included the very first Al-Ahli Bank of Kuwait HQ, Kuwait Shipping Company HQ, and Kuwait Aviation Fuelling Company. Advancing through the 80’s and the 90’s, Pace has experienced significant growth and has managed to deliver a broad array of iconic projects, not only in Kuwait, but across the GCC. These projects include Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development HQ, The Joint Banking Centre in Kuwait City, and the Al Bahrain Arab African Bank. Pace also delivered the outstanding Kuwait University Khaldiya Campus and the Kuwait Government Building in Astana, Kazakhstan. The result of this ongoing success saw Pace usher into the 21st century as a strong market leader and influencer, with a rich portfolio of world-class projects that invited even a wider range of public and private sector clients to work with the firm. Projects undertaken and delivered by Pace across Africa, for instance, include the Ayos Bonis Road in Cameroon, Gore Gambela Road upgrading in Ethiopia, and a huge central power plant in Mali. The firm has also worked relentlessly on creating a pool of talent in the region. This has been achieved by attracting exceptional people from across the globe, and by fostering a creative mindset among graduates, establishing itself as an educational institution for promising architects and engineers. clients with consideration and respect. Throughout this first half of the 20th century, Pace has delivered over 1,250 successful projects in every sector imaginable. These include such bluechip developments such as Avenues Phase IV, Riyadh Metro, Kuwait University Administration Facilities, Jahra and Abdel Nasser Roads, Jahra Medical City Hospital, Kuwait National Museum, New Jazeera Airways Terminal and Marassi Al Bahrain. The firm’s 50th year has been defined by success, growth and change throughout the organisation. A campaign was launched to celebrate both its history and forward direction, which reached far and wide across the region, culminating in the ‘50 Years of Architecture in Kuwait’ cultural exhibition that took place in Shaheed Park, Kuwait City, in October. The exhibit offered a unique insight into the iconic architecture of Kuwait, commemorating its evolution throughout the past five decades. The ‘50 Years of Architecture in Kuwait’ exhibition demonstrated the contrast between past and present Kuwait, borrowing elements of Kuwait’s iconic architecture and going beyond just architectural properties to present them as the dramatic sculptural forms. The event was a great success and the company is extremely proud to have brought this to Kuwait, not only for the wonderful staff within Pace, but for the wider public to celebrate the rich architectural tapestry of Kuwait and the wider region.

Its current work ranges from the interior design of an international courthouse of 356,189sqm to the redesign of 14 floors of a bank’s entire workspace. Both Pace and its clients are continually challenged to create spaces that exceed expectations and advance perceptions and standards. The firm achieves this by working closely with clients to uncover the drivers behind any request for change, which results in the maximisation of benefits across the lifecycle and beyond of any design project. Building close relationships with its clients allows Pace to confront any preconceptions they may have prior to the start of the design process. Through workshops and interactive meetings with different user groups, the firm is able to understand, assess and exceed the client’s requirements.

Pace embraces complex projects; they always rise to fresh challenges, no matter how involved or different. “I am grateful for how our people have helped Pace to continuously address different design challenges through taking on diverse projects across many different sectors, further enhancing our technical know-how and design expertise,” says Tarek. “We enjoy forging long-standing relationships with our clients too,” Tarek continues. “An example of this is our work on The Avenues mall in Kuwait, where Pace has had a continuous 16 years involvement in the project. Having successfully worked on the previous three phases of The Avenues, last year we opened Phase 4/B of the megaretail project. Additionally, Pace has been by the client to provide design and supervision services for two multi-storey luxury hotels at the venue, which are ongoing.

Diversification is a Pre-requisite for Success Over the next five to 10 years, clients will seek to continually diversify their economies and projects, attracting wide-spread investment in non-oil related industries. This in turn will put the emphasis firmly on the construction industry, as countries look to suppliers to make good on investments in infrastructure and property. As a result, as can be seen in Kuwait with ‘Vision 2035’ and in countries such as Saudi Arabia with its long term development plan ‘Vision 2030’, all major sectors will play a vital part in the future growth of the region, including building infrastructure. “Diversification is not a choice, it is an economic necessity for the continued success of our region as a whole. Leaders in both the government and private sector must embrace new ideas, innovate and take risks. We as a firm are seeking new ways to do business, being adaptive and agile to change, investing in sustainable technologies and new methods of working to improve our overall productivity,” Tarek concludes.
