Editors Foreword

ACCELERATING THE TECHNOLOGY REVOLUTION TECHNOLOGY HAS NOT ONLY PLAYED A ROLE IN USHERING IN THE AGE OF GLOBALISATION, IT HAS ALSO BEEN THE MAIN CATALYST FOR ITS ADVANCEMENT, AND SO THE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT THE SOFTBANK GROUP IS WORKING WITH THE GOLDMAN SACHS GROUP TO RAISE MONEY FOR ITS SECOND $100 BILLION TECHNOLOGY INVESTMENT FUND IS CERTAINLY NEWSWORTHY. Moreover, Saudi Arabia, along with several other countries, are said to be in preliminary talks over the new fund, which it is believed, will start formally soliciting investors in July. SoftBank’s first Vision Fund has stakes in many of the world’s leading technology companies, including Uber and WeWork. SoftBank may perhaps contribute up to $50 billion, up from $28 billion in the first fund, as a result of what founder, Masayoshi Son, sees as potentially rewarding returns. The aim will be to close the fund by March 2020. Even though Son has made no secret of his intention to raise more capital following the first Vision Fund, there’s been some question as to whether he would manage to generate yet another $100 billion grant. The original fund was the largest ever of its kind, raising concern it could increase start-up valuations and damage returns. This belief was backed-up by the first public offering by Uber Technologies, which was something of a failure. However, it is now among the fund’s highest-profile investments. There is no doubt that SoftBank has gained confidence after it was contacted by a number of sovereign wealth funds and received favourable early responses from other investors. The discussions are preliminary and the fund might not close as planned next year, or may possibly raise less money than expected. Son has been quoted as saying: “Because we have made great results and performance in SoftBank Vision Fund I, a majority of investors have shown high interest in Vision Fund II. On top of that, many investors around the world showed their interest to be part of Vision Fund II.” Saudi Arabia dominated the first Vision Fund, contributing $45 billion of the total amount, and Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince and Chairman of the kingdom’s sovereign wealth fund, told Bloomberg in October, 2018, that he would pledge the exact same sum of money for the next Vision Fund.
