WELCOME

to the University of Oklahoma!

Welcome to the University of Oklahoma! You are now a part of the OU family and starting an exciting time in your life. It is a great time to be starting your journey here at the university. While academics will, of course, be the major focus of your undergraduate years, participation in Greek life can be an integral part of a complete educational experience preparing you for your personal, social and professional life. Your experience as a member in one of our many Greek chapters will provide a framework for achievement and strong personal value development that will be applied to your academic studies. Community service, academic support, campus engagement and leadership development are just a few opportunities provided by the Fraternity and Sorority system here on campus. The University of Oklahoma is a special place where special moments happen every day. It is enriched by the many contributions of the members of our fraternities and sororities in our five outstanding councils. I hope you consider sharing in this life-changing experience. Along with your degree, your time in a Greek organization will last long beyond your undergraduate years. Sincerely, David Boren, University of Oklahoma President

Congratulations on becoming a part of the Sooner family. We are excited your student has chosen the University of Oklahoma, and we enthusiastically welcome you. From academics to many co-curricular activities, I encourage your student to take advantage of the numerous opportunities OU has to offer. I invite you to learn more about our outstanding Fraternity and Sorority Student Life and to see firsthand the tradition of leadership development, academic success and community involvement it provides our students. Each of our 58 active chapters is a member of one of our five Greek councils - Interfraternity Council, Independent Greek Council, Multicultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council and Panhellenic Association. Each FSSL organization offers unique opportunities for personal growth and meaningful experiences. Take time to learn more about what FSSL has to offer by visiting www.greekou.edu. Becoming a member of an organization will be an experience of a lifetime. I am confident the University of Oklahoma will provide you with the academic and social tools for lifelong success. Choosing to be a member of a fraternity or sorority enriches the collegiate experience and provides a lifelong, unique membership opportunity. This is the first step on a new path toward endless opportunities and rewarding experiences as you prepare for life after college. Please do not hesitate to call or come by my office if you have any questions. I look forward to meeting you. Welcome! Clarke Stroud, Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students

OUR COMMUNITY VISION

Academic Distinction

Development and Education

Fellowship

Service and Community Engagement

All fraternities and sororities understand their members are students first. Our chapters challenge their members to exceed academically. Academic excellence is supported through incentive programs, study halls, professor dinners and study skill workshops.

Serving our community is a touchstone of Greek Life at the University of Oklahoma. Whether raising funds, contributing service hours, or both, our chapters each give back in a unique way.

Our chapters provide personal and leadership development for their members in many ways. We expect our students to leave their chapters as better versions of themselves, and the developmental and educational opportunities provided help that cause.

Fellowship between members and organizations is a characteristic of our community we highly value. These connections impact students and help make a large campus feel like home.

FRATERNITY AND SORORITY Student Life

Thank you for your interest in Fraternity and Sorority Student Life at the University of Oklahoma. We proudly serve students by providing leadership and personal development opportunities throughout the year. Getting involved provides an enhanced membership experience in your collegiate years. Some of our signature programs...

Emerging Leaders

Educational Sessions

Safebreak

Adopt-A-Prof

Emerging Leaders focuses on developing the newest members of fraternities and sororities. This program cultivates leadership characteristics, allows members to network with campus and community leaders, and establishes a peer support system.

Safebreak is an annual pre-Spring Break event held in honor of Lisa Weider, a former Panhellenic woman who passed away tragically while on spring break in 2004. The event promotes safety during spring break activities for all Greek students.

Greek Community Forum

The Greek Community Forum is a unique program in which five to seven of OU’s most outstanding faculty converge on the Greek community for an evening of intellectual stimulation and casual interaction. Because relationships with faculty are critical for student development, this program fills an important role in the programming calendar. All councils participate together at jointly hosted spaces.

All new members of fraternities and sororities on campus must attend educational sessions on the topics of hazing prevention, alcohol education and sexual assault awareness. These sessions equip our newest members to care for themselves and their fellow members as active bystanders.

The Adopt-a-Prof program was launched in 1999 by President Boren in an effort to increase student and faculty interaction outside of the classroom. Each participating faculty member is matched with a student group and asked to connect and participate with members of that group in various events throughout the year.

Greek Awards

Our office proudly honors students and Greek letter organizations each year through our awards program. Awards for excellence are presented in the areas of academic achievement, community and campus engagement, leadership and member development, recruitment and education of new members, and more. Additionally, outstanding recruitment guides, alumni members, house directors and organization advisers are honored annually.

@OUMGC

Frequently Asked Questions Do I have to be a certain cultural group to join? All of our organizations under MGC are culturally based in history, but not in the way they recruit. You do not have to identify in a specific cultural group to pursue membership in any of our chapters. How much does it cost to be a member of MGC? Each chapter sets its own fees and payment schedules. Each potential member should ask chapter members about financial obligations. The average cost of joining an MGC chapter ranges from $125 to $260 a semester, with an average of $192.50 per semester.

16

How can I join an MGC organization? Most chapters require students to attend two recruitment events and an informational session at the beginning of the fall semester during the MGC Recruitment period. After turning in an application for membership, you will be scheduled for an interview. If selected, you will receive a bid (offer) from the chapter and must fill out an official bid/intake form with the MGC adviser. You can find more recruitment-specific information on our website, www.mgc.ou.edu.

RESOURCES Fraternities and sororities at the University of Oklahoma are held to high standards by the university community, their national organizations, chapter and campus advisers, and of course, the Office of Student Affairs, the Office of Student Life and the Office of Student Conduct. The safety and wellness of our students is our top priority. We provide many educational sessions to help equip and empower our students to participate in responsible decision-making. All new members of fraternities and sororities are required to attend trainings on hazing education, alcohol education, and sexual assault and active bystander training.

FAMILY GUIDE This guide is to be as much of a resource to students interested in the fraternity and sorority community as it is to parents and guardians. We hope the following pages will help answer questions you may have and provide useful information to your families when making the decision to join a fraternity or sorority. The fraternity and sorority experience can provide growth, academic support, peer mentorship and education, and close contact with university administrators. Our organizations value tradition, and many have mottos by which their members live by. All of our sororities and fraternities were founded on a set of values, ethics, and standards their members strive to uphold.

Frequently Asked Questions What is Recruitment? Intake? Recruitment and intake are names for the process by which fraternities and sororities recruit new members. These processes differ from council to council but all must be in compliance with organizational, institutional and state policies and procedures. When do students join these organizations? We are happy to be an institution that offers a fraternity and sorority experience to students regardless of their credit-hour standing. A large majority of our students join chapters their first semester in college, but some organizations do require a college GPA prior to joining. What are the benefits of joining? Joining a fraternity or sorority can have many benefits to students. Students in our system are more likely to have higher grades due to academic support and peer mentorship; students also gain personal and professional development opportunities, a group of friends with which to share their college experience, and a variety of leadership and educational resources. What does it mean to be a new member? A new member period is a special time for students to bond with other new members and older members as well. In this time, they learn about the organization’s history and goals, and this time ends in initiation into the organization.

Family Tips Be supportive of your student’s choice to join a fraternity or sorority - a student does not have to be a legacy in order to join, and this might be a new experience for your whole family. Take some time and learn about the organization your student is looking to join. You can find this information and helpful links at our website, www.greek.ou.edu. Understand the financial responsibility that comes with the fraternity and sorority experience. You can find council-specific financial information on our website or by reaching out to council advisers. Encourage your student to get involved within his or her chapter. There are a plethora of opportunities for you as parents to get involved, too. Ask questions. The Office of Student Life staff is happy to help answer any questions you or your student may have about the fraternity and sorority experience, recruitment processes, etc. You can find our contact information online at www.greek.ou.edu.
