A cruise on the turquoise waters of the famous Aitutaki lagoon is a must on any Aitutaki itinerary. There are a number of great motus to explore on the various cruises including One Foot Island (pictured top and middle) where clients can get a stamp in their passport from the post office. Other popular islands are Maina (Honeymoon Island) and Akaiami (pictured bottom), the former stopover island for TEAL flying boats on the Coral Route. Aitutaki Adventures, Bishops Cruises, Te King or the Glass Bottom Boat are some of the choices available. There is also the day trip from Rarotonga (available through wholesalers). Departure from Rarotonga is at 0800 with the return flight arriving back in Rarotonga at 1730. Included is a return transfer from the airport to clients’ accommodation, flights, an island tour of Aitutaki, lagoon cruise, lunch, towels and snorkelling gear. Trips are generally transferable so in the event of cloudy wet conditions, clients are given the choice of re-booking for another day with no cancellation penalty or surcharges (subject to availability). The majority of the cruises include food and drink as well as plenty of snorkelling stops.

Atiu The adventure destination is a popular spot for nature lovers as it’s a breeding ground for the endangered red lorikeet (pictured right page) and Kakerori. Highlights include trips to the limestone caves in search of the Kopeka bird a cave-dwelling swift bird only found on Atiu. There are also coffee plantations, the main village, Atiu Fibre Arts Studio and 26 secluded beaches to explore. Atiu Villas is the main accommodation option and hosts Kura and Roger Malcolm can ensure your clients’ stay is as active as they want it to be arranging eco, island, coffee (pictured right page), fishing and historical tours. The Kopeka is a bird that sleeps and nests in a cave. It never lands outside. It eats insects on the wing and hangs in a cave, just like a bat. Then there is the Kakerori, a bird introduced to Atiu from Rarotonga in 1999 in an effort to save it from extinction as it’s main predator on Rarotonga, the ship rat, does not exist on Atiu. And recently another endangered bird, the colourful red lorikeet (kura) was reintroduced to Atiu, also in an effort to protect it from the ship rat. This popular nature, light adventure destination has never been more accessable with Air Rarotonga scheduling flights from Aitutaki to Atiu on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and from Atiu to Aitutaki on Wednesdays.
