EDGARS ON TREND Winter warmers for the home

Message from CE: Mike Elliott

LOOKING AHEAD TO 0 IN 3 I am pleased to share that based on preliminary numbers for the full 2019 financial year, our EBIT (bottom line profit) was a smaller loss than in 2018. While this remains a substantial miss to our budget, it is nevertheless worth celebrating. Despite a lot of heavy clearance activity throughout the year, lower promotional activity and better stock management meant that we achieved a 0.4% better gross margin, and we enter the new financial year with very little clearance stock. Even better news – we have just finished the first month of the new financial year and we exceeded our April sales budget by R8 million, which is the first time we can say that as a business in a long while. With our people disruption behind us, we are now building a strong, solid team to drive the business back towards profitability. Our goal is simple: 0 in 3 (that is, we must be profitable within three years). How we do this is also simple – drive gross profit Rand and manage expenses like never before (austerity being the key word). Sales and gross profit come from great product that arrives at the right time, in the right store, in the right quantity, delivered to the customer with simplicity and great service (champions of our customer). To this end, I look forward to seeing our NPS score and credit sales growing again. The business has endured an incredible amount of uncertainty and change. With this now largely settled, our goal must be to bring pride and passion back to our brand. With our values firmly at our core, let’s make Edgars the company everyone wants to be part of once again. Best Regards

On our beauty radar

OWN YOUR HAIR WITH PRODUCTS FROM EDGARS BEAUTY Edgars has a range of products to protect and nourish your hair. If you have kinky hair, you need to treat it gently with leave-in conditioners, creamy cleansers and nourishing stylers that keep hair hydrated and the scalp conditioned. The Perfect range is ideal for this hair type, allowing you to cleanse and style your hair with minimal fuss, while Mango and Marula’s perfectly popping activator is a must-have for controlling frizz and creating crunch-free, hydrated curls. If you regularly wear wigs and weaves, it’s still important to maintain the health of your natural hair and scalp. Cleanse your scalp once a week with a moisturising shampoo, then apply a leave-in conditioner to hydrate and alleviate itchiness. Remember your hair must be completely dry before putting on your wig to prevent fungi from growing. Arrange your hair in a neat braid to prevent damage. WHEN USING A WIG OR WEAVE, IT’S IMPORTANT TO LAYER YOUR EDGES PROPERLY FOR A NATURAL LOOK. HERE’S HOW: 1. Leave some of your own hair out after wearing the lace frontal. 2. Define your parting. 3. Brush down your baby hair with a wet small brush. 4. Apply a styling gel to your baby hair and brush the hair with swapping strokes. Edgars stocks an 18-inch Malaysian loose-wave wig and a 12inch Peruvian straight bob, so you can achieve the look you want with your hair. With Edgars Beauty, you’ll never have a bad hair day again!

TOP TIP Coils and coil outs look best on freshly washed and conditioned hair. To create the perfect coil, apply a liberal amount of leave-in conditioner to your entire head; this will detangle the hair so that creating the coils will be easier.

Celebrating young design talent

DESIGN INNOVATION STUDENTS SOARING TO GREATER HEIGHTS Heartfelt congratulations go out to our very own Shaylene Morris, who was announced the winner of the 2019 Mini Scouting Menswear Competition, run in association with GQ Magazine, at the SA Fashion Week Show on Friday 5 April in Sandton City. Shaylene, who is our 2017 design intern, together with Denzel Vilakazi, our 2018 design intern, made it to the top six finalists shortlisted from over 50 entries. Shaylene was ultimately selected as the overall winner for her fantastic collection of beautifully manufactured, fabulously put-together, trendy men’s streetwear. Shaylene’s prizes include R50 000 in cash, an all-expenses-paid trip to Italy to attend the Italian Fashion Week, an opportunity to display her collection at the SA Fashion Week Autumn/Winter Show in October 2019, and media exposure in GQ Magazine. Furthermore, our 2018 design students Neo Rangaka and Mpumi Dlamini were afforded an amazing opportunity to collaborate with visual artists and showcase their brilliant work at the Lizemore & Associates Art Gallery #ARTABOUTFASHION, on Saturday 27 April in Parkwood. Congratulations and well done to all!

Edgars on trend

WINTER WARMERS Edgars Home keeps the temperatures up this winter with the Worldhood trend, inspired by the high energy of global cities. Worldhood takes its cue from city grids and urban spaces. The freedom synonymous with global street culture gives license for the use of bold pairings and mix-and-match pieces that give a nod to the industrial. Surface design on textiles are interpreted in waffle weaves for loft and texture. Print and pattern are influenced by angular shapes and colour blocking, with core cement greys creating the perfect backdrop for bold colours of green, royal and vibrant orange. See our in-store assortment of bedding, dining and décor styles that are guaranteed to warm up your home, including a range of bold decal crockery for winter’s hearty stews and soups. Enjoy!

Highlighting Edgars team members

HONOURING ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT As a business, we place a high value on having an entrepreneurial spirit. Being entrepreneurial means knowing how to make money and save money. It embraces change and sets high performance expectations, because we’re building a leading brand! It also means constantly testing and learning – which results in us succeeding faster! This month we’d like to celebrate the entrepreneurial efforts of Whitney Martyn, Store Manager for Free2BU & JX in Rosebank, seconded in Beauty Hyde Park. Whitney has displayed the true value of entrepreneurship through her consistent drive and efforts in Beauty Hyde Park with various in-store and centre activities, and she has laid a solid foundation for the Beauty division to follow to increase sales and drive customer experience with the ROI monthly in-store activity throughout the Beauty division. Whitney was also responsible for assisting with the Edgars Beauty Rivonia opening, and was instrumental in the production of the uniforms for the consultants. She’s an asset to the business!
