OCTOBER NOTEBOOK WHAT TO SEE, DO AND EXPERIENCE THIS MONTH
We caught up with Melusi Tshabalala, creator of Facebook page and recently published book, Melusi’s Everyday Zulu The concept is fairly simple: one Zulu word at a time, using the word in context to explain its meaning. What do you hope to achieve? What I hope to achieve now is very different to what I set out to achieve. It initially was to get people laughing, but now I hope I can play even the smallest part in getting South Africans talking to each other, across silos. Did you expect Melusi’s Everyday Zulu to be as popular as it has become? I honestly didn’t expect
it to be so popular. I was just having fun with my Facebook friends. It was not even a teaching tool: just ‘fun with isiZulu’. What do you think draws people in? I think as South Africans we want to know more about each other. For too long we have existed in silos, perpetuated by the media and politicians. I think with Melusi’s Everyday Zulu people are getting to know ‘the other’, outside of their normal interactions. I also think the relatable stories I use to explain the words and phrases resonate.
THE INTERVIEW
Which word drummed up the most attention on Facebook, and why? It was the word ‘imvula’, which means rain. I think people enjoyed it because it was posted during the height of the drought in the Western Cape. People enjoyed my wacky take on the whole situation. Have you always used humour to communicate your beliefs and values? I like to laugh and I like making other people laugh. Sometimes the views expressed are strictly mine but they provide great comedy material. I think politicians don’t really take us seriously so we must treat them the same way. Has humour ever failed you? Hahaha. Of course. Many times. There have been many people who have been offended by something I said. I have been dis-invited from things and banned from others. Do you agree or disagree: sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never harm me. I think words can be very painful and shape attitudes. Words can be very dangerous but can also heal.

MELUSI’S EVERYDAY ZULU (MELUSI TSHABALALA, JONATHAN BALL, R210) Stemming from his wildly popular Facebook page, Melusi Tshabalala has released a book of the same name, Melusi’s Everyday Zulu. The concept is simple yet effective: six days a week Melusi posts a Zulu word on his Facebook page and tells a story around it – poking fun at our differences and helping us laugh at ourselves.

THE MOVIES
Smallfoot ( 28 SEPTEMBER *)
You won’t get to see Channing Tatum take his shirt off in this movie, but you will get to hear him as the voice of Migo, a Yeti scientist on a mission to prove that humans exist. Turning the Bigfoot legend on its head, Smallfoot is an animated comedy that’s perfect for the whole family. A peaceful Yeti community is thrown into disarray when one if its members discovers a mysterious creature with tiny feet, and they are forced to consider the possibility that there might be life outside their snowy village.
ELLEN: THE STORY OF ELLEN PAKKIES
( 7 SEPTEMBER *) Pack your tissues for this one. Ellen is based on the true story that captured the attention of the world in 2007, in which Cape Flats mother Ellen Pakkies was accused of murdering her son Abie.
