Critic’s Choices ran in The Guardian, who described the documentary as “unflinchingly candid”, The Independent, The Times and Sunday Telegraph – key quotes below. Reviews Born to be Different received excellent national reviews from the Daily Mail, The Guardian and The Independent. “Over the past decade and a half, those children’s parents have become unbreakable, able to cope with life at a shocking intensity. And it’s so normal to them now that they can describe the experience without any sugar coating..This was superbly frank filmmaking. It didn’t try to be inspirational or tear-jerking. It didn’t pretend the children were angels, or their parents’ saints. It just got on with the job, like these families.” Christopher Stevens, Daily Mail critic and father of a severely autistic son, gave the series five stars. “The series brought home just how hard life can be for parents and siblings of disabled children – especially when faced with the hard truth that their loved ones might not survive. Although sad at times, the resilience, love and dedication showed by the teenagers’ parents made Born to be Different a truly life-affirming watch.” Daisy Wyatt, The Independent “It’s the parents who make the deepest impression, still coping with all the attendant challenges – and some new ones – with bottomless patience, inexhaustible determination and an unfailing sense of humour. You probably don’t have to be a parent to have found this an exceptionally uplifting – and unbelievably draining – hour of television, but I am, and I did.” Tim Dowling, The Guardian Previews “Like Michael Apted’s Up series, which is one of the crowning glories of television, it offers the unique privilege of being able to see lives fast-forwarded in front of our eyes. The children are a fabulous bunch and the love of their parents is absolute, constant and uncompromising.” David Chater, The Times “Taking a tone of pragmatic realism rather than one of voyeurism and exploitation, it’s always been heart-breaking and – warming in equal measure to share their growing pains and their parents’ struggles to deal with the medical and social problems that being different entailed.” The Telegraph

Born to be Different, Channel 4 1 March, 2016

Joining the production 15 years in, it was touching to see the rapport the crew had built with families, says Laurence Turnbull

Born to be Different Production company Ricochet TV Commissioner David Brindley Length 2 x 60 minutes TX 9pm, Tuesday 1 and 8 March, Channel 4 Series producer/director Laurence Turnbull Executive producer Jo Ball Editor Amanda Baxter Laurence Turnbull Series producer/director Over the past 15 years, Born to be Different has followed the unfolding lives of six families who all have a child with a disability. It’s an amazing series and something Channel 4 has had great vision and fortitude to commission over such a long period. So when I was asked to work on the most recent series, which forms part of C4’s Disability season, I said yes instantly, relishing the chance to make something truly worthwhile. But coming into a production that has been running for so long, I was nervous about meeting the families, who had

met so many different production crew over the years. But Ricochet TV has always tried to ensure a degree of continuity (as far as possible in such a freelance world), and to bring back key people who had worked on the series before. Luckily, Marc Lewis, who had worked on the last three series, first as an AP, then a director and series director, was available. As we set off to meet with all the families, Marc was enthusiastic about all the kids and their parents, having built genuine relationships with them over the years. As I met with each family, I found out why he had so much affection for them. In television, you sometimes you have to spend time with people you usually wouldn’t normally hang out with - but that wasn’t the case here. There was some initial ice while the families sussed out my motives for being in their living rooms, but when they saw that Marc trusted me, this quickly melted away. As time went on I, like Marc, warmed to these truly inspirational families and grew to care about them. Now my only fear was how we could say something that hasn’t already been said. I was supposed to be bringing ‘fresh blood’ to the team, so it felt like it was up to me to figure this out. But the ‘angle’ (for want of a better word) soon became obvious as we talked to the families, and met with C4 and with Ricochet chief executive Jo Ball, who had worked on the series since 2003. All the children were about to turn 16. Becoming an adult is hard enough when you aren’t disabled; with such a wide range of disability between them, they were all doing it at different speeds. We were catching up with the children at a real watershed moment and bringing them together provided an opportunity to reflect on how far they had come, and to celebrate their coming of age. Their different disabilities meant their lives were beginning to diverge, and while some of the families were planning futures, others were merely hoping their child would reach their next birthday. It was an emotional weekend. We were asking these families to really think about some of the darkest times in their lives and about what the future might hold. They could easily have kept their emotions at bay and simply given us soundbites, but instead they were ruthlessly honest. I think this was because, ultimately, all the families had complete trust in the series. We are sincere in our hope that contributors will like the programmes we are making. On a long term project like this, you really are in it together. I remember jokingly accusing Jo Ball, who had clearly built up a strong affection for all the families over the years, of ‘going native’. She shot back: ‘Well, it’s up to you to account for that, Laurence.’ In any long-running series, it’s important to balance your relationship with the contributors. It’s natural to become close, but you still need to be able to ask the difficult questions.

Parallels with the Past Amanda Baxter Editor One of the best things about editing this series was the opportunity to tap into a huge archive of material, created over 15 years of filming a group of extraordinary children and their families. There were 15 previous episodes over six series, many hundreds of tapes and a mind-boggling variety of formats. I tried to be as organised as possible by breaking down the old episodes and creating giant chronological timelines for each child, cherry-picking strong lines of sync. Then I raked through the many boxes of archive rushes to collect as many previously unseen gems as I could.

Laurence and I wanted the archive to do more than simply tell the back stories of each child and bring the audience up to date. We wanted to use the often very dramatic material in a way that would resonate deeply with the children’s lives now they’re teenagers. We wanted the archive to really earn its place in the films – each clip had to play a crucial part in the storytelling and understanding of the children’s journeys. We gave a lot of thought to the construction and content of each archive sequence so we could move seamlessly, but meaningfully, back and forth between present and past. Laurence and I had a pre-shoot edit in which we selected clips to suit various themes. He then filmed the children and families on location, watching and discussing these moments in their past. The sequences gave us platforms from which to bounce back in time into longer more complex archive footage. Another time-travelling trick was to cut between visually similar shots from archive and newly-filmed rushes. It took a bit of digging around in boxes to see whether Zoe walked through the same part of her school playground three years earlier, for example, but when I did find this connective shot, it was worth the hunt. We deliberately worked on the two episodes in the series simultaneously. Although it seemed ages before the two cuts were ready for viewing, this paid off because we managed to keep the structures fluid until we were absolutely certain we had the perfect combination of stories, past and present in each film.

Born to Be Different review – stoicism in the face of disability, and being a teenager It is 13 years since the first series of this challenging documentary, and hitting adolescence doesn’t make living with a disability any easier. Plus: the puffins are thriving in The Last Seabird Summer

difficulties face the prospect of physical maturity. The parents of children with life limiting medical problems find themselves facing up to those very limits. Alone with all these new challenges, we are reminded through old footage of what it took to come this far. William has tuberous sclerosis, a rare genetic condition that causes tumours to grow throughout the body. He has endured two major brain operations and now requires expensive medication to keep lifethreatening kidney tumours at bay, which the NHS may or may not fund (it does in the end, after first deciding not to). Shelbie has a chromosomal disorder that means she needs constant care. Her mother, Vicki, has raised six other children alongside her. Zoe was born with arthrogryposis, a condition that affects the flexibility of her limbs. Over the course of nine series – which is to say, her life – she has had three major operations to enable her to walk, and further surgery on her hands and arms. All of which she bore with a stoicism beyond her years. Her mother Anne Marie calls her “my double hard little bastard”. Now in her last year of secondary school, Zoe wants to be a prefect, although her teacher is pushing her to run for head girl. She reluctantly accepts the challenge – not for a lack of ambition. “I’m just scared about the speech, really,” she says. It is the parents who make the deepest impression in this reunion, still coping with all the attendant challenges – and some new ones – with bottomless patience, inexhaustible determination and an unfailing sense of humour. You probably don’t have to be a parent to have found this an exceptionally uplifting – and unbelievably draining – hour of television, but I am, and I did.

The seabirds who make their home on a little clutch of Scottish islands called the Shiants are thriving, and thereby bucking a wider trend. The Scottish coast has seen a 40% decrease in seabirds in recent years, and in some areas the decline is much steeper – one Orkney headland has lost 90% of its kittiwake population. In The Last Seabird Summer? (BBC4), the writer Adam Nicolson explored the sometimes difficult history of the relationship between the birds and humans.

What's on TV: the best TV programmes on BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, Freeview, Freesat, Sky, Virgin, BT Vision, satellite and cable, as chosen by the Telegraph's critics Tuesday 1st March Born to be Different, Channel 4, 9pm. Over the past fifteen years, this moving documentary series has charted the lives of six disabled children from birth. Taking a tone of pragmatic realism rather than one of voyeurism and exploitation, it’s always been heartbreaking and – warming in equal measure to share their growing pains and their parents’ struggles to deal with the medical and social problems that being different entailed. Tonight’s first of a twopart series catching up with them three years on packs more of an emotional punch than before: we learn that now approaching 16 and the next phase of life, two of the three children featured are not likely to live to adulthood. The unchecked tumours that grow inside tuberous sclerosis sufferer William Davis will shorten his life. We follow his parents as they battle the NHS over a pricey drug treatment that may buy him time. Shelbie Williams’s mother admits it’s “wishful thinking” that her daughter’s rare chromosome disorder will give her many more years, particularly as Shelbie’s bone marrow is failing. Witnessing the way in which all involved soldier on or, in some cases, lurch from crisis to crisis –with unwavering devotion and pragmatism – is truly inspirational. VP
