Campaign Overview Episode one of the second series of Top Boy was launched to press and public at a packed screening of more than 400 in NFT1 at the BFI Southbank in August 2013 around three weeks before transmission. Radio 1 DJ Gemma Cairney chaired a Q&A with actors Ashley Walters, Kane Robinson and director Jonathan van Tulleken. Other cast and crew attended and it was very well received. Channel 4 invited 120 guests, 40 of whom were press. The remaining audience comprised members of the public who purchased tickets. This marked the start of the press campaign which ran to over 120 pieces including 24 national pieces (nationals/listings magazines), 13 national reviews, 78 previews and five regional features. Top Boy was almost universally acclaimed across a broad spectrum of media: The Mail, Guardian, Times and Sun. The Times ran a trail on its front page “Britain’s answer to The Wire.” Channel 4’s marketing campaign included commissioning graffiti artists to create a Top Boy wall in the heart of east London devised by picture publicity. There was a powerful poster and print ad campaign and a complementary TV trail as well as an online competition for viewers to create their own Top Boy video mash up. Unusually for a drama, Top Boy was the number 1 tweeted show for a number of weeks largely due to the social media popularity of Ashley Walters and Kane Robinson. Strong images accompanied the campaign and were used extensively.
Quotes
“Top Boy's real power lies not in the gangs and guns, but in its examination of relationships and the many ways, both big and small, in which we fail those who trust us… Ronan Bennett's astute confident scripts have been as adept in the smaller moments as in the violent show-downs, as concerned with what isn't being said as with what is…" Sarah Hughes, Independent "Although nothing can currently touch this show as a portrayal of our multi-ehtnic, equal opportunity criminal classes, it is not sociology. It's a powerful thriller." Andrew Billen, The Times "…it’s powerfully, beautifully done." Radio Times "Top Boy managed to feel realistic and insightful. This second series has maintained that realism, while trying out a more nuanced storytelling technique and cinematic style… when Top Boy is original – its sleek and stylish cinematography, the casting of local kids – it stands far ahead of its competition as Britain's best urban drama." Guardian TV blog “Thrill a minute” Observer “Any Suggestion that Ronan Bennett’s drama glorifies violence is easily refuted in an utterly bleak fourth and final part … Roll on series three” Sunday Times (Culture) “This brutal, dark but exhilarating drama has been just about the best thing on TV all summer.” The Sun “…honest, gripping rendition of inner-city life…” The People “…it’s a convincing portrait of the pressures and strife of modern urban life…” The Metro "Channel 4's recent run of bold contemporary dramas keeps going with this very welcome second series…" Heat "The brilliant BAFTA-nominated drama is back…" Zoo "tough, visceral" Radio Times "Ashley Walters as Dushane gives a performance that's every bit as good as anything in The Wire. He should clean up in awards season but he keeps it so real, you don't even see the acting." Keith Watson, Metro

WHAT TURNS ME ON
ASHLEY WALTERS TV? The Apprentice. Books? Can’t be bothered. Gig? That’s easy for the rapper turned actor: his own, of course, with a ‘paranoid’ Eminem… Film F
I I’ve got three allttime favourites: The Goonies, Stand By G Me M (left) and Flight Of The Navigator. N I watched them ov and over again as a kid. over I grew gr up as an only child with m my mum, quiet and timid, so I could relate to those films because they’re all about underdogs. I’ve got five kids of my own now and to them those films are old and not 3D, so they’re not interested. But I love them and still watch them now. I’ve got this new thing on my phone called Movie Box, which shows the latest movies, so I managed to catch Man Of Steel, though I do think there have been too many comic-strip remakes recently.
TV Desmond’s was huge for me when I was younger, firstly because it was set in Peckham, London, and that’s where I grew up, but more importantly because the characters were the first Guyanese people I saw on TV – I am Guyanese on my
mum’s side of the family. There were a lot of Jamaicans on TV but Guyana was never represented, so I felt connected to it. It was one of my inspirations to become an actor. I really enjoyed Run (with Olivia Coleman, above) recently on Channel 4. I loved how powerful and beautifully shot it was. And I did get sucked into The Apprentice – as I am every year – for a bit of light relief.
Music

The album I’ve been listening to most this summer is Magna Carta Holy Grail by Jay-Z (left). It’s quite coded and weird and there’s a lot of stuff going on in there. I like the way he’s gone back to his roots. The most played track on my iPod is a song called Sideline Story by J Cole and I love the message behind it. The whole concept is that he wished people made guidelines that would have shown him how to succeed and ensure he didn’t have to suffer any problems – but obviously no one writes the plan for you, you have to go through it all, good and bad. I can really relate to that. I love the recent hit Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams. I know there’s been a big controversy about it being sexist but I think he’s talking about women being treated like objects and saying that he’s not that sort of guy.
Theatre I saw a show recently at the Young Vic called Blackta, written by Nathaniel Martello-White. He is an actor who has struggled and so he wrote a piece about how, for black actors, it’s one-in, oneout. I don’t necessarily share his opinion but the concept of the play is interesting. About ten years ago I saw Fallout at the Royal Court starring Lennie James (right, with Marcel McCalla), which was

based on the story of Damilola Taylor. That was a powerful piece of theatre.
Book I have never really bothered with books, but I read one called The Scholar: A West Side Story by Courttia Newland about two cousins; one on the wrong side of the tracks and one on the right side, and how they influence each other. It’s a rites-of-passage story and it made me think a lot about myself. I’ve been in touch with the writer recently to discuss perhaps bringing it to the screen in the future.
Gig I am always working, so I haven’t been able to get to a concert for a while, but my three most memorable gigs are Michael Jackson (left) on the Bad tour at Wembley Stadium, then R Kelly at Wembley Arena. However, the gig that stands out the most was my own – So Solid Crew at the London Arena when we were supporting Eminem. It’s weird looking back, as I was only 17 or 18 and I didn’t take it all in, but I just remember there being a sea of people in front of us and that that was the first time I crowdsurfed. I met Eminem, who at that point was very, very paranoid. With our entourage there must have been more than 40 of us arriving in his dressing room and he was probably thinking it was a bit much, but he was cool and not arrogant. Ashley will be in the second series of ‘Top Boy’ on Channel 4 later in August

A LIFE ON SCREEN: Sharon Duncan-Brewster Currently playing Lisa in series two of Top Boy (9pm, Ch4), actress Sharon Duncan-Brewster has been in some of Britain’s best-loved dramas. Here’s where you might have seen her before… Breaking bad Although she made her TV debut in a 1991 episode of sitcom 2point4 Children, it wasn’t until camp prison drama Bad Girls came along that Sharon really got noticed. Before her 1999-2002 stint as shoplifter Crystal Gordon (1), she’d ‘always played prostitutes and drug dealers’, and claimed 1 it was ‘really nice that I can cry, I can smile, I can laugh and be angry as Crystal’. A sticky end In 2009, Sharon showed up in EastEnders as Trina, the drug-addicted wife of
Lucas Johnson (Don Gilet, 2, with Sharon), trying to prise her man away from his new love. He pushed her away when she tried to seduce him, and was impaled on a rake. 2 Lucas went on to kill again, while Sharon went into space… Out of this world A virus on the Red Planet turned Maggie Cain (3) – the second British woman to walk on the moon – into a host intent on infecting the Earth. This story was the penultimate episode of David Tennant’s tenure in Doctor

Who, but Sharon found herself busier than ever. In demand The past few years have seen Sharon taking on the first series of Top Boy (2011), as well as voicing DJ Scratchy in children’s hit Rastamouse. Earlier this year, she co-starred in Ch4 comedy The Mimic, and has just finished a sold-out run in London stage hit A Season In The Congo. And next? US miniseries The Bible, up for three Emmy Awards and coming here soon.

Ashley back on top in drama of inner city life For years he was Asher D in garage group So Solid Crew, but Ashley Walters has since forged a successful acting career. Back in the lead role of inner-city drama Top Boy, Walters reveals his softer side to SOPHIE HERDMAN.

shley Walters has gone missing. For an awkward five minutes I sit in the back room of a cinema while publicists frantically try to locate the AWOL actor. Eventually he is found - in the bar. Moments later he nonchalantly strolls into the room wearing a grey hoodie and jeans, drink in hand. “It’s a Coca-Cola,” he assures me. “I’m not allowed to drink now that I’m married.” We’re meeting to discuss the second series of Top Boy, the hit drama about life in inner-city London which focuses on drug dealing, gangs and murders. Walters plays Dushane, who by the end of series one is the main drug dealer (the top boy) on Summerhouse Estate. The actor grew up on an estate in Peckham similar to the one we see in the show, and says: “I knocked about with the people who lived
Dushane’s life every day.” He only flirted with trouble, though, because while his father wasn’t around to keep him in check, his mother was a force to be reckoned with. “I was very lucky that she was so strong. She was on my case 24 hours a day. I never had the chance to slip up or get into anything too deep.” When he was six, his mother, a local government officer, sent him off to the Sylvia Young Theatre School where he learnt everything from tap dancing to acting and ballet. “She was a pushy mum, I’m not going to lie. She was like one of those American mums who put their kids into beauty pageants aged one,” says Walters, 31. “But I’m glad she spent the time and money on it, even though most of the time I found it boring and uncool, and I got bullied for a lot of my childhood.”

As a result, he says he’s very relaxed with his own children (he has five with two different mothers and plans to have more with his new wife Danielle Isaie). “My wife would say I’m too relaxed. But I don’t want them to feel the pressure that I felt,” he explains. Then again, the pressure has paid off. At the age of 10 Walters appeared in the TV series The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles and aged 14 he won a part in Grange Hill. Then, in 2004 he starred in Bullet Boy, a role that won him Best Newcomer at the British Independent Film Awards. He’s since gone on to have parts in

many TV series, including Hustle and Outcasts, and films like Stormbreaker and Get Rich Or Die Tryin’. And, of course, for years Walters was Asher D in garage group So Solid Crew, with whom he had the hit single 21 Seconds. While it used to be So Solid fans that stopped him on the street, it’s now Top Boy he’s most recognised for. “There are kids calling me Dushane, they haven’t got a clue what my real name is.” But it’s not just kids who watch Top Boy. According to Walters, viewers include everyone from the police to gang members. “That’s one of the things I’ve been proud of - it’s crossed boundaries,” he says. Indeed, when the first series was shown back in 2011,
In 2002 he served seven months in a young offenders’ centre for possessing illegal firearms. It was, he says, one of his moments of enlightenment, the others being watching his father die and having five children who needed feeding. He’s now an ambassador for many drama schools and often gives talks to young people. “A lot of people think that they can only achieve what they see around them, but there’s a bigger world out there,” he says. ➔ The new series of Top Boy starts on Channel 4 on Tuesday at 9pm.
just after the London riots, it gained a dedicated following. “Tensions were high and I think it captured everyone’s anger and determination,” says Walters. “If you’re not from this area it’s an eye-opener, and if you are from the area then you know this stuff goes on, probably a bit worse than it is on Top Boy.” The series has been criticised for showing “unrealistic” 16-year-old drug dealers. But show insiders point out that in reality many are as young as 12. Walters says that what he likes about Dushane, an intelligent and considerate character, is that he represents a different side to the drug dealing world. “He shows that a lot of these people are very smart, they were destined for much better things, they are in church on Sundays and taking care of their family - they have hearts,” he says. Walters himself was one of those destined for better things, but his journey from Peckham to performer wasn’t a smooth one.

‘There’s a bigger world out there’ drama WATCH After starting out in the garage group So Solid Crew as Asher D, Ashley Walters has forged a successful acting career. As he returns to our screens in the lead role of inner-city drama Top Boy, we quiz him about his life Q: Growing up on an estate in Peckham, how similar was your life to that of your character Dushane, the main drug dealer on Summerhouse Estate in Top Boy? A: I knocked about with the people who lived Dushane’s life every day. I was very lucky that my mum was so strong. She was on my case 24 hours a day. I never had the chance to slip up or get into anything too deep. Q: We hear that your mother sent you to the Sylvia Young Theatre School when you were six to learn everything from tap dancing to acting and ballet. How did you enjoy it? A: She was a pushy mum, I’m not going to lie. She was like one of those American mums who put
their kids into beauty pageants aged one. But I’m glad she spent the time and money on it, even though most of the time I found it boring and uncool, and I got bullied for a lot of my childhood. Q: You’re now a father of five. What are you like as a parent? A: My wife would say I’m too relaxed. But I don’t want them to feel the pressure that I felt. Q: Were you surprised that the first series of Top Boy received such a dedicated following when it was broadcast in 2011, just after the London riots? A: Tensions were high and I think it captured

everyone’s anger and determination. If you’re not from this area it’s an eye-opener, and if you are from the area then you know this stuff goes on, probably a bit worse than it is on Top Boy. Q: How does Dushane represent a different side to the drug dealing world? A: He shows that a lot of these people (drug dealers) are very smart, they were destined for much better things, they are in church on Sundays and taking care of their family – they have hearts. Q: You’re now an ambassador for many drama schools and often give talks to young people. Is that an important part of your work? A: A lot of people think that they can only achieve what they see around them, but there’s a bigger world out there. For me, the job isn’t acting, it’s being an inspiration. I was inspired by so many people who motivated me to be who I am today. Q: Are you planning on heading to Hollywood any time soon? A: I’m not a big fan of America. It might be my insecurities but I find it quite daunting. Everyone’s gone over there and been a success – Idris Elba, David Harewood – I don’t want to be the one who goes and has to come back, I’ve got bad luck like that. Q: Despite your successful career, do you find the acting world makes you insecure? A: Sometimes I think I don’t deserve what I’ve got. I’ve made a lot of mistakes and there’s only a certain amount of times that you can hit rock bottom and come back up – I’ve done that a few times. Although this is all here right now, it could be taken away tomorrow. So I just do my work and let the rest take care of itself. ■ The new series of Top Boy starts on Channel 4 on Tuesday

Tuesday, Channel 4, 9pm hannel 4 is a frustrating beast. With its halcyon days at the vanguard of experimental, alternative, socially inclusive television long gone, it now spends most of its time sneering at the poor and gawping at misshapen testicles: the TV equivalent of a particularly objectionable Daily Mail columnist. And yet as everything crumbles around it, C4’s drama slate continues to impress. With the recent likes of Southcliffe, The Mill and, now, the second series of TOP BOY, it’s the last bastion of quality in an otherwise devastated field. But even that has its downside: it makes virtually everything else on the channel look even worse by comparison. In any case, Top Boy, an unflinching crime drama set on a fictional estate in Hackney, east London, is one of British TV’s most distinctive dramas. While series one attracted inevitable comparisons with The Wire – both provide rounded portraits of street-level
drug dealers in deprived urban areas – Top Boy deserves to be judged on its own merits. Written by Hackney resident Ronan Bennett (The Hamburg Cell; Hidden), it’s drawn from research into the lives of locals, which lends the characterisation, setting and slang-heavy dialogue a ring of authenticity. Plus, the performances from the predominantly young black cast are entirely free of affectation. Now, I’m a white arts critic from Fife, so I’ve obviously no idea if Top Boy actually delivers an accurate portrayal of east London crime culture. But I’m convinced by the wealth of little side details – kids rapping awkwardly on an overpass, banter in the hair salon, the boy who mystifyingly talks with his hand covering his mouth – which feel like observations based on experience. Ashley Walters stars as Dushane, whose goal of becoming “Top Boy” – ie the drug dealing king of his estate – was grasped at the end of series one. However, his affluent lifestyle is threatened by a police investigation into the murder of a rival. Meanwhile, property developers are forcing local businesses from the area, as Dushane’s gang set their sights on a cartel of Albanian criminals. Charming, bright and quietly charismatic, Dushane’s likeability masks an inner ruthlessness: like Tony Soprano, he’s a screen “villain” whose dichotomous personality

deliberately wrong-foots the viewer and shakes them from complacency. Bennett makes us care about his plight, but never attempts to excuse his behaviour. Preoccupied with themes of family loyalty, vulnerable children trapped in a violent environment, and the debilitating effects of greed on both a corporate and street level, Top Boy gets its points across without recourse to heavyhanded moralising. The political dimension is implicit, rather than confronted directly. And despite its brutal surface, it also benefits from a welcome jolt of humour: the banal reality of crime is often more ridiculous than scaremongering media reports would have you believe. Refreshingly devoid of glamour, Top Boy is a tense, kinetic, utterly engrossing drama, fluidly directed by Jonathan van Tulleken and, as he skilfully weaves together several characters and storylines, impressively realised by Bennett. It’s richly human drama. And that, dear reader, is it. After over six years of watching TV and scribbling shapes for yer Scotsman, I’ve decided to move on to pastures new. But it’s been a hoot and/or optional holler. Please don’t talk about me when I’m gone.

Double Your House For Half The Money 8PM, CH4 ))) Sarah Beeny returns with a second series of a show that’s tailored to quiet times in the property market, when it makes more sense to add value to what you’ve got, rather than spend a fortune moving house. She follows two ambitious projects in the Home Counties.
The Naked Rambler 10.35PM, BBC1 ))) This documentary catches up with Stephen Gough, well-known for his insistence on going walking with nothing but a rucksack and a pair of boots, taking arrest and imprisonment in his naked stride. Why does he do it?
The Midwives 9PM, BBC2 )))) A new series of the BBC’s answer to One Born Every Minute, following events in the busy delivery suite at St Mary’s Hospital in Manchester. This dramatic first episode lives up to its title – Expect The Unexpected.
Top Boy 9PM, CH4 )))) Yet another Channel 4 drama notably lacking in good cheer, this is a second series of Ronan Bennett’s gritty tale of drug dealing and gang warfare on an east London estate. Ashley Walters stars as Dushane, who is now moving into the (dangerous) big time. Series one was likened to The Wire – which is pushing it a bit.
Family Tree 10PM, BBC2 ))) Tom’s adventures in America continue, with Civil War obsessive Harvey Krupp inviting him to take part in a battle re-enactment, and a car accident leading to a happy meeting. This ought to be so much funnier than it actually is.

PICK OF THE DAY The Great British Bake Off 8PM, BBC2 ))))
The smash-hit baking contest returns for a fourth series, and this time, presenters Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins welcome a baker’s dozen to the Bake Off tent for ten weeks of culinary competition. With 13 contestants, judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood have the choice to eliminate not one but two hopefuls – at any time. The first challenge is to rustle up the perfect sandwich sponge cake. Is classic perfection the way to go, or should something quirky be thrown into the mix? Of course, it doesn’t end there – there’s an angel food cake technical challenge, and a showstopper that takes us to chocolate heaven. All this, and it’s still only week one…
Double Your House For Half The Money 8PM, CH4 )))
Property expert Sarah Beeny returns with a second series of the show in which she helps property owners to get their dream home without moving house. In the first episode, tempers fray in Ascot, where a family are attempting to double the size of their 1950s semi-detached house.

Tuesday 20 Viewing guide | David Chater The Midwives BBC Two, 9pm What with Channel 4’s One Born Every Minute and the BBC’s Call the Midwife, this documentary series felt like overkill when it was broadcast the first time around. Yet here it is again, back for a second series. In fairness, the programme makers have done their utmost to focus on the most dramatic births. In this episode, a woman is having her first baby at the age of 45 as a result of IVF treatment. “It’s a miracle,” she says. As if that wasn’t enough, her partner had a son born with special needs who died at the age of nine. All babies are precious, but this one is extra special – for the staff as well as the parents. “Some people do extreme sports,” says the midwife. “I like being here.”
Top Boy Channel 4, 9pm Ronan Bennett’s drama about kids dealing drugs in inner-city London is back for a second series. The young man played by Ashley Walters has become the top boy on the Summerhouse Estate. Meanwhile the police have discovered the decomposed corpse of a rival murdered in a turf war and they are determined to convict the Summerhouse gang. Like its big brother The Wire, it takes a while for the viewer to become acclimatised to the
jargon and get a handle on the multiple strands of plot, but it is well worth the effort. Top Boy is a disturbing portrait of a self-contained world where drugs and violence fill the vaccuum created by an absense of opportunity.
Double Your House for Half the Money Channel 4, 8pm Sarah Beeny is back with a new series of the property show tailor-made for a recession. By building an extension, digging down into the basement or converting the loft, she reckons people can double the size of their existing homes for half the money it would cost to move to a bigger property — thus avoiding stamp duty, moving costs and crippling mortgages. The downside is that you have to live in a building site for weeks, which gets trickier if, like one of the families tonight, you have a brand new baby. Still, true to her word, she helps two families extend their homes and luckily there is a gratifying amount of mayhem involved.
King Alfred and the Anglo-Saxons BBC Four, 9pm The third and final episode of the series looks at the achievements of Alfred the Great’s grandson Aethelastan, who took over the family business and

created a kingdom of all England. Michael Wood cannot praise this AngloSaxon dynasty too highly. He describes Aethelstan’s achievements as a warrior and a lawmaker; he traces the origins of Parliament to the king’s assembly politics, and he shows how Aethelstan created a national coinage. Admittedly he may have had his own brother drowned at sea, but you can’t defeat the Vikings if you’re a stickler for the niceties of family life.
New Tricks BBC One, 9pm This is the last episode with Alun Armstrong as the alcoholic anorak Brian Lane. The scriptwriters have long been paving the way for his departure, and the character appeared to be looking forward to a peaceful retirement. However, in tonight’s episode he becomes involved in one last case searching for the missing brother of a woman from his wife Esther’s book group. In the course of the programme, Esther (Susan Jameson) is smitten by the detecting bug. It’s the scriptwriters’ cruellest joke — condemning poor old Brian to spend his retirement working as a private detective alongside Esther. The temptation to hit the bottle must be overwhelming.

In 2011, the first series of this drama achieved acclaim for its realistic depiction of drug dealers on an inner-London estate. Here was a British series earning comparison with The Wire, the US drama set in a similar social milieu. Harewood I don't want to be the one who goes and has to come back, I've got bad luck like that."
Ashley Walters has no plans to try and crack America
The 31yearold actor revealed he gets recognised a lot by Top Boy fans, and viewers include everyone from the police to gang members, young and old. "That's one of the things I've been proud of it's crossed boundaries," he said.
